Welcome to the latest episode of The Overlap's football history podcast, It Was What It Was.As Aston Villa return to Champions League football this week, Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper take a deep dive into the club's most iconic moment: their 1982 European Cup triumph. It Was What It Was revisits this historic victory, made even more remarkable by the fact that manager Ron Saunders resigned midway through the season, leaving Tony Barton to step in and guide Villa to European glory.Jonathan and Rob walk us through the unforgettable campaign, which saw Villa travel to Germany and Ukraine before defeating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the final. The win became even more legendary when first-choice goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer was forced off with an injury, only for his inexperienced replacement, Nigel Spink, to step up and deliver a crucial performance in just his second-ever first-team appearance, cementing his place in Villa's history on one of the club's greatest nights. If you enjoyed the podcast, please hit subscribe to never miss an episode.***Please note this episode was recorded before the death of the late Gary Shaw.*** Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Brett sits down with former four-term member of the Florida House of Representatives, Florida Keys champion, and current mayor of Monroe County – Holly Raschein. Holly was born and raised in Alaska, but she has ultimately made her home over 5,000 miles away in the Florida Keys. Holly got her start in the legislative process working for lobbying legend Bob Levy, working with now-Florida Senator, Ana Maria Rodriguez. She would go on to work as an aide to two House members from Monroe County (Ken Sorensen and Ron Saunders) before staking her own claim on Florida's Southernmost seat in the legislature for four terms. In addition to being a county commissioner and the county's mayor, she is also the Director of Government Affairs for AshBritt, a well-known operator in the world of disaster recovery. They discuss her parents' individual journeys to end up in Alaska; her childhood amongst the moose; the decision to head for the opposite side of the country for college at Florida State University; how she ended up in the “Fabulous Florida Keys”; the interesting and quirky similarities between the Keys and Alaska; how she decided to run for state office and the massive impact she made there; what the passage of the Florida Keys Stewardship Act means for the future of her community; what she brought back home to make her more effective as a county commissioner; and the challenges that lie ahead for The Keys. Holly is as active as ever in her many philanthropic endeavors, and even with an incredibly busy life, she still makes her son her biggest priority. If you want to find out what makes the Keys special and what it takes to make a difference there, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. Plus, you'll get some advice on what to do if you get chased by a moose. We hope you enjoy the conversation! From "The Best Of Talking Sports Books" with Tim Caple the first 50 editions the incredible tale of Steve Hunt born in Aston Birmingham who was told by then Aston Villa manager Ron Saunders "There's bloke in the canteen who wants to sign you and were letting you go" and that was it off he went to sign up for the New York Cosmos in the same team that had Pele, Beckenbauer and Chinaglia where he became part of the most glamorous team in world football. In this clip Steve recounts how the move happened , going to legendary "Studio 54 " and Pele. 'm with the Cosmos is Steve Hunt's story. After only seven first-team appearances for Aston Villa, he found himself playing with two of the greatest players of all time: Pele and Beckenbauer at New York Cosmos. He returned home to play for Coventry City and West Bromwich Albion and was capped twice by England. This is his story. Steve Hunt collaborated with Ian McCauley on his autobiography. Ian is a former teacher, now living on the Isle of Wight. This is his first book although he enjoys writing short stories for pleasure. Ian is a Birmingham City supporter and Steve - a lifelong Aston Villa fan - has long since forgiven him. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tim-caple3/message
According to Steven Scragg, Stu Horsfield and Aidan Williams, this is the "Stingray" season – anything can happen in the next nine months. Ron Saunders walks out on Aston Villa, joins Birmingham and misses out on lifting the European Cup. Spurs win the FA Cup in a year not ending in 1. Swansea's rapid ascent from Division Four now sees them topping the First Division. But, obviously, Liverpool win the league. There's even a little bit of politics; Maggie Thatcher, your boys get one hell of a beating …

John 'Dixie' Deehan grew up an Aston Villa fan and got to live the dream of every Holte Ender by wearing the Claret & Blue jersey and scoring goals for his boyhood team. From 1975-79, John was part of a famous attacking force alongside the brilliant Andy Gray and Brian Little and eventually returned to Villa as assistant manager in 2001. He scored more than 50 goals during his time at the club and won the 1977 League Cup.In our interview, John describes growing up an Aston Villa fan, getting scouted and making his first team debut at the age of 18. John vividly recalls playing for the great Ron Saunders and sharing goals with Gray and Little. There are also recollections of Villa's famous 5-1 win over a then mighty Liverpool side, winning the League Cup in dramatic fashion against Everton, scoring a late equaliser in front of the Holte against Johan Cruyff's Barcelona and being forced to escape as Rangers fans invaded the pitch at Villa Park.A must-listen for anyone who supports Villa!GET IN TOUCHTwitter: @VillaNoFillerInstagram: @allvillanofillerFacebook: All Villa No FillerEmail: allvillanofiller@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

They also select their manager for the Perfect Eleven feature, facing a tough choice between Ron Saunders and Dean Smith. Having looked at the Villa players individually, Lee, Gary and Mike return to discuss what they achieved collectively. The hors d’oeuvre is Villa’s first league title in 71 years, achieved after a Homeric tussle through the 1980-81 season with Bobby Robson’s Ipswich and using just 14(!) players.Follow that, as they say, and oh boy, did they. Villa then won the European Cup at the first time of asking in 1981-82, despite Tony Barton taking over from Ron Saunders halfway through the campaign, and then topped it off by beating Barcelona to win a comically violent European Super Cup final. We reflect on the legacy of these achievements and ask why this team seems to be so underappreciated in English football. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Once upon a time in the Midlands, there was a moneyball miracle. Come and join Lee, Gary and Mike as they travel all the way back to 1980, one of the outer markers of the Nessun Dorma time period, to look at Aston Villa’s epic achievements at the start of that decade. In part one we take a look at how that team was assembled by manager Ron Saunders, running the rule over players like Allan Evans, Dennis Mortimer, Gordon Cowans, Tony Morley, Peter Withe and one of English football’s greatest lost talents, Gary Shaw. Firstly though we kick things off with our Player of the Pod, and reflect on the career of jet-heeled winger Andrei Kanchelskis See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Back in the 70's a young player from Aston Villa by the name of Steve Hunt was told by Ron Saunders that "There's a bloke in the canteen who wants to take you to New York i've accepted the offer" so he swopped the midlands to team up with his new team for pre season in Bermuda waiting to welcome him a squad that included the world's greatest player Pele. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tim-caple3/message
Let's start with a question: 'Where the f*****g hell is Aston Villa?'Pardon!?It's not often a guest on our Claret & Blue podcast can get away with such a blunt enquiry about our beloved football club, but we'll make an exception for Andy Gray. That was a genuine question the former claret and blue hero asked himself when he found out he was joining Villa as a teenager way back in 1975.To a generation or more Andy Gray is renowned for his football punditry, but before dominating the airwaves he was dominant in the air as Ron Saunders' 70s revival took flight. For all his analysis of the Premier League era, he hasn't spoken much about his playing (and coaching) career at Villa - until now.
We welcome the former Aston Villa, Wolves, Everton, Rangers and Scotland striker Andy Gray to the show this week. The former Sky and now BeIn Sports pundit talks about three separate interviews done for Shoot and Match magazines from around 1977/78 and 1984. Andy laments his dodgy knees, his falling out with Villa boss Ron Saunders, and his Scotland career whilst also celebrating his time at Goodison Park which brought him great success and his best memories as a player. We also discuss Diana Ross, not taking the Everton manager's job, and his resemblance to Freddie Starr. Host: Mark Godfrey. Music by scottholmesmusic.com
Watford captain Troy Deeney exclusively reveals on Breakfast that he won’t push to leave Vicarage Road over the summer, Deeney also divulges exactly why Virgil Van Dijk is the most difficult defender to play against in the Premier League, Eric Dier tells Hawksbee & Jacobs how he found out Joe Hart was moving to Tottenham, Leeds United’s Stuart Dallas admits he can’t wait to take on Liverpool on the opening day of the season, on Drive Darren Gough feels that footballers shouldn’t get a full cap for playing in a friendly as he ignites a verbal battle with Breakfast co-host Jamie O’Hara, Jason Cundy reignites the club v country debate when he claims he’d rather see Chelsea win the Carabao Cup than England win next summer’s Euros, Alan Brazil reminisces about the time he played as a defender in non-league football, Paul Whitehouse & Bob Mortimer discuss potentially fishing for Marlin in their next TV series, former Villa striker Andy Gray recalls the time he fell out with his old boss Ron Saunders and on the Sports Bar former boxer Spencer Oliver takes us behind the scenes of the Matchroom ‘bubble’ on the eve of Whyte v Povetkin as Tony Bellew makes a surprise appearance on the show. In a less light-hearted show than usual, we pay our respects to My Old Man Said's first Aston Villa manager Ron Saunders, who sadly passed away last week, before analysing what is going wrong for Villa at the moment and should we be concerned? We analysis why the possession trademark of a Dean Smith side seems to have expired in the Premier League, while putting recent results like the 4-1 home loss to Leicester City into context. Is Smith's ethos failing? What's up with Wesley? Did someone just utter the phrase "Doing a Fulham" again? Also, outside of the Villa-verse, we look at the concept of fan engagement through Socios, the latest crisis club, and the football implications of Russia's Wada drug ban.Coming up later in the week, we will put out a second part of the podcast answering the Mad Few listener questions, so stay tuned for that.To take advantage of the show sponsor Beer 52's offer of a free case of 10 craft beers (all you have to do is pay the £4.95 postage), check out http://bit.ly/Beer52xMOMS for further details.Enjoy the show!UTVSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in 2020 and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. The 1980s were a decade dominated by Liverpool, where they were led in the dugout by Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish, all of whom kept the Anfield empire rolling toward regular league titles. Yet they were constantly challenged by the rise of an unexpected rival, be from Ron Saunders' Aston Villa and Howard Kendall's Everton to George Graham's Arsenal and Brian Clough's at Nottingham Forest. This is the story of a remarkable decade for English football.
My Old Man Said's David Michael interviews Richard Sydenham, author of Ticket to the Moon: Aston Villa - The Rise and Fall of a European Champion, to discuss the book which charts Villa's golden period and rise to the pinnacle of European football and then why it went so wrong, so quickly. The interview includes Sydenham's experiences of talking to many of Villa's players from the period, a trip to the late Doug Ellis's house, winning the trust of the Ron Saunders and Tony Barton families, as well as his interviews with ex-bosses like Graham Turner and Ron Atkinson. Also, he tells the My Old Man Said podcast how he got access to the club's boardroom notes and memos, which makes the book an authority on the club's most fascinating and glorious period, and why it didn't turn into a longer legacy of success.EnjoyUTVYou can buy the Ticket to the Moon book, here - https://amzn.to/2Rdn4y7SUPPORT THE SHOW!If you want the show to continue in 2019 and be more frequent and get access to bonus podcasts, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron.
