And here to discuss it is Brian Little one of the leading researchers in the subject of human personality. Brian is the author of the book, Me, Myself and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being. (https://amzn.to/3LN32mi). Doesn't it seem that people argue more now than they used to – and often about the most ridiculous things? People argue about politics and social issues and just about everything else. It makes you wonder if arguments actually accomplish anything or are they more destructive than constructive. Joining me to discuss why we seem to like to argue is Lee Siegel. Lee is the author of seven books as well as a writer and cultural critic who has written for Harper's, The New Republic, The Nation, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, The New York Times. A Tale of a Cat and a String"So what's 155 inches long and cost $5,000?" asks C."The piece of string we had surgically removed from the inside of our cat last week," replies Torya. And so begins the story of Jasper, affectionately known as Mr. Purrs, and his recent health scare. It all started when Jasper began vomiting for two straight days. Concerned for his well-being, we rushed him to the vet, where an X-ray revealed a linear object in his colon. Little did we know that this object would turn out to be a 155.5-inch long piece of white thread."He unthreaded the sewing machine and took it off himself," Torya explains. "A sewing machine that was somewhere where he shouldn't have been in the first place."The vet suggested keeping Jasper overnight to hydrate him and see if the thread would pass naturally. However, the next day brought more complications, including a fever and high calcium levels. It was clear that surgery was necessary to remove the foreign object from Jasper's insides. The Decision-Making ProcessThe vet presented us with two options: an ultrasound or surgery. Surprisingly, she recommended surgery as the first choice, acknowledging that the diagnostic test would likely lead to surgery anyway. This honest approach was refreshing, as it saved us from unnecessary expenses and allowed us to focus on Jasper's well-being.Less than two hours after the phone call, Jasper was undergoing surgery. The vet successfully removed the 155.5-inch thread from his insides, and we were relieved to hear that there were no lacerations or visible damage to his intestines.Jasper's Road to RecoveryJasper's recovery has been a rollercoaster of emotions. From his initial sassy attitude to his dramatic demands for attention, he has kept us on our toes. But despite his mischievous behavior, we can't help but be grateful that he's back to his feisty self."He's been a right menace today," Torya admits. "Yesterday, if I didn't pet him every 3 seconds like he demanded, he would knock things off my table, including full cans of soda into my power strip."But amidst the chaos, we can see that Jasper is healing. He's slowly returning to his normal routine, demanding pets and attention in his own unique way. And while he may still have a few more days of medication and a cone of shame to contend with, we have hope that he will make a full recovery. The Importance of Supportive FriendsIn times of crisis, the support of friends can make all the difference. We were fortunate to have the guidance and expertise of our vet, who not only provided excellent care for Jasper but also offered us honest advice and support throughout the process. But it wasn't just our vet who provided support. Our friend Brian Little and his podcast, Your Favorite Blockhead, have been a source of entertainment and comfort during this challenging time. We encourage you to check out his show, where he weaves together peanuts and MMA into one amazing podcast.Reflections on Life's Ups and DownsJasper's journey reminds us of the unpredictable nature of life. One moment, everything seems fine, and the next, we're faced with unexpected challenges. But it's how we navigate these challenges that defines us.Through Jasper's ordeal, we've learned the importance of being proactive and seeking help when needed. We've also come to appreciate the resilience and strength of our furry friends, who can bounce back from even the most difficult situations. The Future OutlookAs Jasper continues his recovery, we look forward to the day when he can finally have his stitches removed. We remain cautiously optimistic, knowing that the next few days are crucial for his well-being. But with the support of our vet, the love of our friends, and the determination of our feisty feline, we believe that Jasper will come out of this stronger than ever.In conclusion, life is full of ups and downs, and it's how we handle these challenges that truly matters. Whether it's a 155.5-inch thread or a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, we must face them head-on with resilience and determination. And with the support of friends and loved ones, we can overcome anything that comes our way.So, as we bid you goodnight, we encourage you to cherish the moments of joy, navigate the challenges with grace, and always remember to lend a helping hand to those in need. Because in the end, it's the connections we forge and the love we share that make life truly worth living.Goodnight, everyone.Thank you for listening to The Nightly Rant. Brian Little, a lifelong resident of eastern Ohio, found his passion to write only a few years ago. While being a small business man, a musician, and an amateur artist he turned his talents to writing and incorporated his love for horror, the supernatural, and history. He drew his inspiration from authors like Robert McCammon, Brian Lumley, and Clive Barker.Desiring to share local history and legends he decided to write a book and have something original with a story and events that the reader would find refreshing. Turning his new found love into the successful selling of over 2000 copies of his first book locally, he also sold many more on Amazon. With the success of his first title and 2 sequels, he has been invited to speak at many area functions and was able to put together the first ever Gretchenfest, in celebration of the almost 200 year old local ghost tale

We are eager to be defined... Brian Little, author of "Me, Myself and Us" believes we're as driven by spontaneous, "out of character" moments (and the projects we're passionate about) as we are by innate and learned traits. The acronym OCEAN. "O" stands for "open to experience," versus those who are more closed. "C" stands for "conscientiousness," in contrast to those with a more lackadaisical approach to life. "E" -- "extroversion," in contrast to more introverted people. "A" -- "agreeable individuals," in contrast to those decidedly not agreeable. And "N" -- "neurotic individuals," in contrast to those who are more stable. Little explains “All of these dimensions have implications for our well-being, for how our life goes." We'll often act well beyond the parameters of who we believe we are in order to achieve or move forward in any given pursuit. Good Risings is a mindset. Did you know Memorial Day wasn't declared a national Holiday until 1971? And it wasn't always called Memorial Day either. Those are just a few of the interesting facts this episode starts with as we look at this uniquely American holiday and day of remembrance. https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/memorial-day-2022-facts-american-holiday A few years ago, we had Brian Little on as a guest. Brian is one of the leading researchers on the science of personality which I find particularly fascinating. I mean, think about your personality. Why are you the way you are and why are you different than me and everyone else? Now there is some new research about personality and Brian is back to discuss it. Brian is the author of the book, Me, Myself and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being. (https://amzn.to/3LN32mi). It seems that everyone is arguing a lot more. People argue about politics and social issues and just about any other topic you can argue about. Is that a good thing? Do arguments accomplish anything? Here to discuss why arguments are important is Lee Siegel. Lee is the author of seven books as well as a writer and cultural critic who has written for Harper's, The New Republic, The Nation, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, The New York Times. His latest book is Why Arguments Matter. (https://amzn.to/3ao7Zox).  Do you know what to do if you or someone close to you gets stung by a bee? Where we're going, we don't need roads . . . In 2003, Wirral born Alex Hay achieved every football fan's childhood dream, to score for your team, in front of the home end. Alex grew up in the shadow of Prenton Park, the home of Tranmere Rovers. He turned down offers from Tranmere's looming premier league neighbors, Everton and Liverpool to join his beloved Rovers.  Making his way through the academy, and into the first-team picture, playing alongside the likes of Liam O'Brien, John Achterberg, Jonny Morrissey, Jason Koumas, Clint Hill and Iain Hume, Alex would go on to make 54 appearances for Tranmere before being released by Brian Little ahead of the 2004/2005 season.  Alex was heartbroken and moved down south to Rushden and Diamonds, who had just been relegated into Division 3. Alex struggled for form and confidence, isolating himself from his teammates. After an unsuccessful season, Alex moved back North, signing for Bangor City in the Welsh Premier League. A handful more seasons in the Welsh and Non-League, saw Alex's playing career culminate at local side Cammell Laird in 2010.  At that point, Alex dropped out of the professional game and embarked on a difficult transition into civilian life. We spoke to Alex about his struggles with anxiety and confidence, his time at Tranmere, and how he coped with the idea of no longer being a professional footballer once his career had finished. We all know that diamonds can hold great sentimental (and monetary) value. As luck may have it, diamonds—particularly defective ones, with little errors in their crystal structure—also hold great scientific value. The defects have properties that can only be described by quantum mechanics, and researchers are working on harnessing these properties to pick up on tiny signals coming from individual biological cells. In this episode of Relatively Certain, Dina sits down with defective diamond expert Ronald Walsworth, the founding director of the Quantum Technology Center at the University of Maryland (UMD), as well as Minta Martin professor of electrical and computer engineering and professor of physics at the UMD. Walsworth is also a member of the Institute for Research in Electronics & Applied Physics and a Fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute. Walsworth explains how diamond defects can be used as superb magnetic field sensors and discusses recent strides toward using them to image the insides of individual cells. More details on these advances can be found in two recent publications from Walsworth's lab. This episode of Relatively Certain was produced by Dina Genkina, Chris Cesare and Emily Edwards.
