In episode six of the latest season of the Courage My Friends podcast series, co-executive director of Food Secure Canada, Marissa Alexander and executive director of North York Harvest Food Bank, Ryan Noble discuss the alarming outcomes of Toronto's Who's Hungry report, the growing food and poverty crisis in Toronto and across Canada and urgent actions that need to be taken by policy-makers and civil society in averting this ever-worsening crisis. Reflecting on reasons for the record number of food banks visits this year, Noble says: “It's not as if there's been a sudden shock over the last year. What we're seeing is the continued culmination of insufficient supports for people, public and private, to deal with skyrocketing costs of living. .. whether those are employment supports, social assistance supports, settlement supports, to deal with an out of control cost of living, primarily driven by housing, but also by the cost of food and other essentials.” According to Alexander: “I don't think the systems are breaking down. I think the systems are working exactly as they were designed, which is not to support those who are the most marginalized and oppressed… like capitalism, but also the patriarchy, systemic racism and oppression ... So if we're going to make changes to ensuring that those people aren't "falling through the cracks," we have to make sure that those cracks aren't designed for them to fall through.” About today's guest: Marissa (she/they) is a registered dietitian and co-executive director of Food Secure Canada, who is passionate about anti-racism, food security, and equity. In May 2023, the War College hosted the second annual Strategic Landpower Symposium. Bringing together students, scholars and practitioners, the symposium presented senior leaders with original research and recommendations for the application of landpower to achieve national objectives. Included within the symposium were the findings of the Army War College Strategic Landpower Integrated Research Project, an effort of eleven members of the Class of 2023 in support of Army senior leader priorities. A BETTER PEACE has organized four podcast episodes with those students to discuss their projects, their relationship to the Strategic Landpower Symposium and possible implications for the future of U.S. security policy. In the virtual studio for this fourth and final episode are Mike Barnett, Mark Mullinax, Ryan Noble, and Jon Holm. They join podcast editor Ron Granieri to discuss the daunting task of mobilization for large-scale operations. Their conversation examines such topics as maximizing the effective use of reserve component mobilization authorities, leveraging alternate mobilization sites, expanding civilian hires and contracting and increasing continuity and reallocation of deployable readiness assets. The third annual Strategic Landpower Symposium is already scheduled for 7-9 May 2024. On-line registration will open 1 August, 2023 on the Army War College website.

From a young age commercial cattlemen Jordan Willis, Cokeville, Wyo., and Ryan Noble, Yuma, Colo., both had a laser focus career goal: they wanted to ranch. Separate operations, but similar paths. “I didn't understand what it was going take for us to all be back here on the place, but I always wanted to be here,” Willis says. Today, he and his wife, Jennie, manage their family ranch with his extended family. After college, Noble came home to his parent's ranch that had survived the 1980s. Making it work to support another family, which now includes wife Ronella and their kids, would be just that: work. Both families built their herds and developed a marketing path over the years. They use American Angus Association programs and reap the benefits of an investment in themselves. This conversation touches on genetic selection, how their seedstock supplier helps them reach their goals and what they'll need more of in the future. HOSTS: Miranda Reiman and Troy Marshall, director of commercial industry relations, American Angus Association GUESTS: Ryan Noble, Noble Ranch; and Jordan Willis, Willis RanchGUEST BIOS: Jordan Willis, along with his wife, Jennie, and their four children, own and operate Willis Ranch near Cokeville, Wyo., alongside the rest of his extended family. Today, 24 pivots cover nearly 3,700 acres of flood-irrigated soil with 1,800 commercial cows surrounding it. Willis Ranch is a diversified operation, committed to producing top-tier commercial Angus cattle, collecting detailed data, irrigating and farming their native lands, and keeping their family ties strong. Ryan Noble, Yuma, Colo., ranches with his wife, Ronella, and their two children, along with Ryan's parents on the place that's been in the family for more than a century. After college, Ryan found a way to stretch their eastern Colorado ranch to support two families and continued growing that Angus-based cow herd each year. An innovative “always getting better” mindset, along with a focus on cattle that do it all on the ranch and on the rail earned the family the 2019 Commercial Commitment to Excellence Award. Drought has changed their “how,” but not their “why,” and today they operate successful heifer development program. My guest this week is Ryan Noble. Ryan has been involved in a number of bands over the years, most recently as the bassist for The Soft White Sixties. Prior to this, he spent many years as the front person for DESA, which was a band that spawned off of the beloved Bay Area Ska-core band Link 80. Ryan is one of the most talented people I have the pleasure of calling a friend. I've known him for about 25 years now, and was fortunate enough to play in two bands with him prior to his joining Link 80. The Blast Bandits and O.F.S. were both ska bands based in the Central Valley of California, and we had some truly great times. Ryan has written some of my favorite lyrics, and I've always appreciated his unique perspective on life. During this episode, we talk about what it was like to jump from an obscure band cutting it's teeth into the spotlight as the lead singer of a road tested band. We spend some time talking about some of his experiences in his various other projects, and dive into his lyric writing techniques. He also shares with me some of his favorite artists (both musical and physical), as well as his 5 Desert Island albums The episode also includes a song from The Soft White Sixties at the end called "City Lights", so check that out You can hear The Soft White Sixties here - https://thesoftwhitesixties.bandcamp.com/ You can hear DESA here - https://desa.bandcamp.com/ You can check out Link 80 here - https://asianmanrecords.com/bands/link-80/ You can hear The Blast Bandits and O.F.S here - https://theblastbandits.bandcamp.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label.
