Tim Krueger has been in the cycling industry for almost three decades. He got his start at a local bike shop breaking down boxes as a teenager. After college he landed a job at Salsa Cycles as the Product Manager during the birth of the "Adventure by Bike" category. A pivotal time in the bike industry that ultimately led to an entirely new market and category of Adventure Bikes. After his time at Salsa he went on to start his own company, Advocate Cycles. Advocate featured a rad lineup of steel adventure bikes with a unique business model that donated all of its profits to philanthropic institutions. After attempting that business model for a couple of years it became clear to Tim that businesses needed their profits to sustain their employees and grow their company. It was at that time that the decision was made to transition the brand into Esker Cycles that we know today. Tim's contributions and commitment to the cycling community and influence in the cycling market at large has been nothing short of impressive. I've been following his career, and awing over the cool bikes he's helped bring to market, for years. It was a true honor to get to pick his brain about longstanding questions and curiosities I've had about him and some of the bikes he's brought to market. Today we are joined by another dream guest of mine - Mirna Valerio. Let me tell you a bit about her! Mirna Valerio is a native of Brooklyn, NY, a former educator and XC coach, ultramarathoner, cyclist and skier, DEI facilitator, and author of the memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. She began running in high school, recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008 and started her blog Fatgirlrunning—about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner endurance athletes— while training for her first marathon. Mirna's athletic story has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Runner's World, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in the viral documentary short, REI Presents The Mirnavator. Her writing has been featured in Women's Running, Self, Outside, and Runner's World. In 2018 she was chosen as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year; in 2019 was featured on GMA, and has since then appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Access Daily, and The Today Show. Her partners include LLBean, Ford Bronco, Lululemon, Salsa Cycles, Darn Tough Vermont, Hydro Flask, and Garmin. She currently lives and trains in Vermont and is wholeheartedly enamored and obsessed with downhill skiing. Mirna and I talk about: Her journey from blogger to published author - as she writes about her running life Writing nonfiction and fiction Her current project about Black Joy and the natural world How she handles feedback and rejection How she decided to write her first fiction novel during nanowrimo Wild writing Legacy And so much more. We laugh a LOT in this one, and my sound definitely goes in and out so I'm sorry, but it was a great conversation and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. You can find Mirna on IG @themirnavator Or head over to her website: www.themirnavator.com And you can learn more about me at https://www.safiyarobinson.com/
A Beautiful Work in Progress is Mirna's memoir and the story of how she got into ultrarunning and subsequently finishing her first 100k race. Although the book starts with her running, she goes back to her childhood and talks about her family, how she grew up surrounded by cousins, and the time she spent outside with them. Mirna grew up in a body positive environment where all the women who surrounded her were curvy, and where she was never described as “fat” until much later in life. She also watched her mother lose both her best friend and her youngest brother to heart attacks, and she has made it her mission to stay active so that that she can stay healthy but without a focus on weight loss. By the end of the book, Mirna is successful in her first 100k race at the Javelina Jundred, but if you are already following her on social media, then you know that is not where her sporting journey ends. I wedged this one in just as Ron DeSantis was running for cover as the CAT4 beast that is Ian came to visit. One blowhard to another. Just as it should be. What a week. I feel like the kid in the dodgeball game who ends up alone against a full team on the other side winging those pain-inflicting red balls at his head. "Hey, can you kill this mouse, set up a satellite dish, teach an 87-year-old how to use Facetime, critique this PDF, write a quote, make this book, find this part, review these samples, drill this hole, and talk your mother off the ledge of running out of coffee." And that before 10 AM. Thank God I'm so intelligent. Who is this week's episode for? Anyone saying, "Me and my kids are riding this thing out." Then, when the reporter returns the next day the only thing left is a slab. THAT is my kind of adventurer. Who is our hero of the week? Our GOAT? Tune in and find out. This week we cover the departure of my drone, my experience with Starlink, Salsa Cycles coming through in a major way, my return to El Paso, and how much I miss Albania. In addition, we talk new laptops, horrible morning rituals, and the strange, fantastic world of letters, pens, and mysterious correspondence.

Vidcast: https://youtu.be/gUI2xLPWXAw The CPSC and Salsa Cycles have recalled the Salsa Cutthroat series bicycles. These include all GRX 810Di2, GRX 810 1x, and the GRX 600 bicycles. Also affected are the Apex 1 frame sets and the Carbon Deluxe V2 aftermarket forks. The bicycle’s fork legs may crack or break, and that poses a fall hazard for the rider. If you have one of these bicycles or framesets, stop using it. Bring the cycle and other affected parts to the Salsa authorized retailers for inspection and free installation of a replacement fork. If you need more information, call Salsa cycles at 1-877-774-6208. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2021/Quality-Bicycle-Products-Recalls-Salsa-Cycles-Cutthroat-Bicycles-Due-To-Injury-Hazard #bicycles #salsa
In this episode we're talking with two guests, Ash Murray and Steph Aich, who are the founders of Midwest Dirt Legion - a riding club for cisgender women, gender non-conforming, and transgender mountain bikers. Ash also works with Girl Scouts River Valleys’ Girls in Gear mountain bike program, teaching Girl Scouts technical skills and taking them out to tear up the trails on our new mountain bike course at Camp Elk River in Zimmerman, Minnesota. Ash and Steph started Midwest Dirt Legion with a goal to build more gender equity in the mountain biking community in the Twin Cities. They saw what a big difference it made to have spaces for a diverse set of genders (not just male or female, but non-binary and trans folks as well) when they were doing track bike racing, and they wanted to create that same space for mountain bikers. They started with pretty much nothing but an idea, and found that there were a ton of other people interested in what they were doing. Part of the work they do with their organized rides and events is providing skills clinics and an introduction to mountain biking to new riders. They start where people are at, and help them get comfortable. We talked about how they have both had experiences in the broader mountain biking community with other riders' elitism and a masculine culture getting in the way of riding certain trails, taking certain skills clinics, or even just feeling like they're seen as "real" mountain bikers. They try to eliminate those barriers for their own participants, creating experiences that encourage a lifelong love of the sport. Another goal of Midwest Dirt Legion is to make mountain biking more accessible. It can be an expensive hobby, requiring lots of gear and ability to travel. Ash and Steph focus on making their events as local as possible and helping people get there, and work to break through the common belief that you need a lot of expensive top-line gear to be legit (not true!). They also do broader advocacy work through social media to expand their reach. We talked about what it takes to start a club or organization like this to address a need in a community, and how hard work and gaining support are more important than money. One of our big takeaways was that you can solve a problem without having a lot of money or experience - you can get started, run with an idea, and learn along the way! Especially if you put together the right team. You can learn more about Ash and Steph and Midwest Dirt Legion on their website midwestdirtlegion.com, or in this great article on The Radivist. You can follow them on Instagram @midwestdirtlegion and join their social group on Facebook called Friends of Midwest Dirt Legion. Girl Scouts River Valleys would like to say thank you to our funders and partners that have helped make the Girls in Gear mountain bike program possible: Hugh J. Andersen Family Foundation, the Hardenbergh Foundation, Quality Bike Products, Tonka Cycle and Ski, and Salsa Cycles. Girl Scouts River Valleys, with support from these companies, has made this one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure possible for girls. Together, we can ensure that every girl pushes past their limits and builds the confidence they need to take on any challenge.
July 18, 2020 Riding Gravel Radio Ranch Show Page ABOUT THE EPISODE THIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY JENSONUSA Guitar Ted and Andy get together for something a little special. In this episode, in addition to the usual segments, they chat with Dave Pryor from unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley. Dave shares plenty of thoughts on where they are at for this year (be sure to check out the full informational press release below….). Listen in to get a little taste of what Dave and the event are all about. --------- OFFICIAL unPAved INFORMATION PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley Sunday, October 11, 2020 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania This year, unPAved will take 2 different paths. Announcing the plans (yes, plural) for 2020’s unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley: The unPAved Full-120 Race, limited to 200 participants in an individual time-trial format, on Sunday, October 11th. The registration lottery is open through August 2nd and participation announcements will be on August 3rd. Event costs $150. The unPAved Weekend Challenge, over 2 of the best cuts of the unPAved course set up as timed segments to test yourself on while you spend a weekend vacation in the Susquehanna River Valley. There will be swag, random prizes and lots of fun ways to play along from August 1st through October 11th and registration is now open. Weekend Challenge costs $40. THE unPAved FULL-120 RACE One of Cyclingnews’ “Top-10 Gravel Races in the U.S.A.” will happen this year, on October 11th, though will be significantly different with a reduced field size, eliminating the mass-start and DONEpaved Finisher Party, and including a significant amount of protocols in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Some highlights: 200 PARTICIPANTS Current guidelines for outdoor events in Pennsylvania is a max of 250 people, which includes staff, volunteers, mechanics, medics, marshalls, everybody. This field size will also help make the sign-in and aid stations manageable with the extra protocols in place. FULL-120 ONLY There’s only going to be one field this year, so it’s for the Full-120 miles, and 10,000’ of climbing on some of the best gravel and dirt (in other words, unpaved) roads found anywhere. LOTTERY REGISTRATION Participants can profess their desire to participate until midnight, August 2nd. Announcements on attendance will be made on August 3rd, which is when they will be charged the $150 entry fee. OPEN WAITLIST Everybody who doesn’t get into the field will be placed in the Waitlist. If COVID-related restrictions, and the confidences related to it, lift between now and October as many people from the Waitlist will be included as possible & safe. Also, anybody who doesn’t get in from the Waitlist this year will get the opportunity to register early for unPAved 2021. INDIVIDUAL START TIMES All riders will get a time to arrive in the start area and called-up when it is time for them to begin their 120-mile race, or ride. Riders will be asked for how they plan to ride unPAved during the registration process: “Taking in all the sights, sounds and smells. Ready, willing and able to spend all day out there.” “Not going to win, place or show but that doesn’t mean I’m going to dilly & dally too much.” “If there’s a clock running I’m going to see how I do. Get me to the whoopie pies!” SIGNIFICANT COVID-19 PROTOCOLS Including temperature checks, mask-mandatory zones, no indoor venues, different food & drink available at Aid Stations, two extra drop-bag spots on course, and no DONEpaved Party. Last year, Kelly Catale (Seven Cycles) returned to her college town for the event, and left as the 2019 unPAved Women’s Whoopie-Pie Winner. She’s planning to come back to defend her title: “I am so excited to participate in this re-imagined version of unPAved that will enable me to stay safe during this time while enjoying one of my favorite places to ride!” THE unPAved WEEKEND CHALLENGE A second option for people who want to ride unPAved, though maybe not all of it, is by spending a weekend riding the beautiful farm roads & big forest hills, and taking on a special challenge over two of the best parts of the unPAved course: “The Proper Parts” and “The Difference!” This challenge is open from August 1st through October 11th, and open to anybody visiting the region, and willing & able to ride the courses unsupported. Riders can take this challenge on any weekend between August 1st and October 11th by riding solo, or with their teammates, friends or family (practicing best COVID-19 protocols, of course). The Susquehanna River Visitors Bureau has worked with a number of hotels in the region on special weekend packages—complete with unPAved Swag Bags and special offers from sponsors when they check in. Proceeds will benefit a variety of local charities, as well as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League. Digital routes will be provided that are marked with water and facilities that are available and any nearby food stops. Riders can start & finish their ride from anywhere, as long as the Strava Segment on course is completed. Riders will need to post their rides to Strava, RideWithGPS or similar online service that’s visible to event staff. A leaderboard will be posted for bragging rights, but all prizes from sponsors will be random. THOUGHTS ON THE CHANGES “Fortunately for unPAved, we have had the time and opportunities to talk with government officials, epidemiologists, our participants and the local community to create a different event for this very different year,” said Dave Pryor, unPAved’s Promoter. “Pennsylvania has done an incredible job mitigating the curve, and it appears that outdoor recreation is one of the safest things people can do at this time—with extra precautions to take care of each other. We are also well-aware there are a number of ways that the event will need to change again, or even be cancelled as we continue to live through a pandemic. Both the local and gravel communities have been amazing to be a part of through this and we will all be in constant communication with both—because that’s how communities move forward.” “The Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau is proud to be the Title Sponsor of unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley,” said Andrew Miller, Executive Director. “For the last two years we’ve had the distinct pleasure and excitement to introduce and promote the Susquehanna River Valley as a ‘must-do’ destination for gravel cyclists from the United States and Canada. unPAved adventure cyclists are living their best lives when they come to the Susquehanna River Valley and have praised the event and the destination. Their experiences and joy with unPAved has exceeded our expectations. 2020 will be a different event in a very different world but the adventure, friendly competition, beauty of the Susquehanna River Valley and the joy of gravel cycling will now and always remain the same.” “Salsa Cycles is thrilled to support another year of Pennsylvania dirt riding in the Susquehanna River Valley,” said Lindsay Beltchenko, Marketing Manager of Salsa Cycles (the official bikes & frames of unPAved). “Despite the challenges unPAved has been faced with due to the pandemic, they have put their best foot forward with amending their event plan to provide a safe and fun gravel experience for all.” Along with the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau and Salsa Cycles, unPAved sponsors include Stan’s NoTubes (official wheels & sealant), GU Energy Labs (official hydration), Floyd’s of Leadville (official CBD recovery products), Ritchey Logic, Voler Apparel, Purple Lizard Maps, Nittany Mountain Works, R.E.Load Bags, Philly Bike Expo, and Chamois Butt’r. Pepper Cook is a legend in the bikepacking and touring community. She's known for her witty puns, quirky humour, and almost a decade of epic solo bike trips. I got to meet her at last years Bikepacking Summit where she was a presenter. I've been a fan of her for a long time and listening to her masterfully tell stories around a campfire goes down as a highlight of my life. She is as engaging and funny in person as you may imagine. The day before we recorded this episode she made a heartfelt post on instagram about some of her personal struggles with happiness and mental health. On this episode we unpack some of what precipitated that post and really shed light on the dichotomy between social media and what's going on in a person's real life. We also discuss the value bike travel has had on personal journey with mental health. These are important topics and I appreciate Peppers willingness to openly discuss some hard topics. We also discuss her recent sponsorship with Salsa Cycles, her nomadic lifestyle and recent move to alaska, as well as her most recent solo trip on the Baja Divide. Enjoy!

Mike Riemer aka Kid, aka Miker, is known in the bike industry as the marketing mojo behind Salsa Cycles and their adventure by bike movement. Mike was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea where his parents served as Lutheran missionaries for 43 years. He’s been “in” the bike industry in some form or fashion since the early 90’s or what he likes to call “the golden days of mountain biking”. Along the way, he’s been a race series promoter, zine publisher, and freelance photographer and writer. For the last 24 years he’s worked for bike parts distributor Quality Bicycle Products, entering the building as a warehouse worker, but having spent the last 14 years as the Marketing Manager for Salsa Cycles. He has a 21-year-old son, Jordan, and lives in Richfield, Minnesota. With his combination of genuine passion for cycling and organic storytelling, Mike has been helping us all connect with the purest aspects of bicycle travel through his inspiring tales of adventure by bike. Salsa launched the Timberjack 20 and 24 models, what they refer to as Timberjack Kids, this past December. Salsa’s first foray into the Kid’s bike world. This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. We built this interview series from the title of our newest children’s picture book Taking The Lead that follows our animal characters along a journey to open a local bike shop and inspire their town to ride. We hope you enjoy these personal stories from bike industry executives, non-profit leaders, pro athletes, and families just like yours who are celebrating kids on bikes and inspiring families to get off the couch... and out for a ride. --- Purchase our books, and download the World of Buddy Pegs podcast so you can share the love of bicycling with the kids in your life. Rich Tauer is the President of Quality Bicycle Products or as we call it in the bike industry QBP. Over the last 30 years QBP has grown into the largest parts distributor in the US, the parent company of other successful brands like Salsa Cycles, and a leader in green building with their LEED certified distributions centers. What we really admire about QBP is their commitment to supporting local bike shops, getting more butts on bikes, taking a lead in the development of healthy sustainable bike communities everywhere, AND the personal development of their employees. Over his 26 year career Rich ascended from a front line customer service agent to recently taking over for the company’s founder as president. Rich was a fantastic guest and I hope you enjoy his story. This interview was recorded Live from the Buddy Pegs Media booth at the 2018 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey CA. Andrea only started riding within the last five years after having a Jimmy Johns bike delivery job. Since then she has ridden in Trans Iowa four times, with a finish in 2013. She has also been successful at the Dirty Kanza 200. Andrea also chats about her future in mountain biking. Listen in to hear a good discussion of two successful women of cycling. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for a future show, please email us at info@mountainbikeradio.com. From Andrea: "I live, work, and play in Iowa City, Iowa. Iowa may not have epic mountains or vast skylines, but it boasts hundreds of miles of gravel. That is where I found my true calling. In 2012 I attempted my first Trans-Iowa, got lost, and was instantly hooked. I have been there every year since. I am constantly looking for that next adventure to keep me teetering on the line between insanity and clarity." ----------------------------------------------------------------- RELATED SHOW LINKS: Salsa Cycles Trans Iowa Dirty Kanza 200 Heck of the North Andrea's Blog Gore Women's Bibs Danielle's Blog Danielle's Twitter Danielle's Instagram 2014 Endurance Race Calendar Save $$$ on Carborocket and Tailwind Nutrition and other great stuff, and Support MBR by becoming a member
EPISODE SPONSOR: The Whiskey Off-Road - April 24-26, Prescott, Arizona The Grand Junction Off-Road - May 29-31, Grand Junction, Colorado Epic Rides ------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Sirek of Salsa Cycles recently released a post on the Salsa Cycles Culture Blog called "Location Sensors: An Essay." In the post, he encourages cyclists to pick their heads up off their bars, move their eyes away from their gps screens, pull out the earbuds, and experience the world around us. Listen in to hear the audio version of that post as Mark reads his writing for you. "Remember and work to replicate and build on that feeling of freedom we all felt the first time we rode somewhere, away from home. On that ride, even familiar places had new sights, sounds, and smells because we arrived exposed and free to absorb it all. The thing that hooked us all was about far more than the bike. Now think about all the other rides you’ve been on, and some of the particulars you may have missed. Go back if you can. Keep your eyes and ears open. Taste the “world famous” dish a town is known for, and wonder why if it’s weird. Keep asking questions." --------------------------------------------------------------- RELATED SHOW LINKS: Read the written version of "Location Sensors: An Essay" Salsa Cycles Culture Blog Salsa Cycles Website Salsa Cycles on Instagram Salsa Cycles on Twitter Salsa Cycles on Facebook Salsa Cycles on Youtube Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member If you have an idea for a guest or would like to be on yourself, please contact Ben at Ben@Mountainbikeradio.com ------------------------------------------------------------- About the author: Mark Sirek I had to live on both coasts a couple of times to realize that maybe being born in the Midwest wasn’t just arbitrary. I’m drawn to the terrain here, and if you catch me with one of this region’s supreme IPAs in hand, I’ll talk your ear off about my favorite spots. I’ll always take every opportunity though to explore every nook and cranny anywhere I can on a bike, because that’s what makes me feel most alive.
