Biking 430 mi/688 km alone in the wilderness in the depth of winter might seem crazy, but Jessie Gladish is no stranger to longer treks in the woods. She already completed the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra race on foot and skis and now plans to do it on a bike. Trail conditions will dictate how much riding she can do versus pushing her bike as a glorified luggage cart. Only one thing is certain: she is determined to succeed. Dr. Jason Lunden // #FitnessAthleteFriday // www.ptonice.com In today's episode of the PT on ICE Daily Show, Endurance Athlete division leader Jason Lunden discusses knee pain and the transition to fat tire biking as winter approaches. He explains what a fat tire bike is, highlighting its wider tires, which range from 3.5 to 6 inches, making them ideal for snowy conditions. Jason emphasizes the importance of managing knee pain for athletes, especially during this seasonal shift when many are moving to indoor riding or adapting to outdoor fat biking. Spending 12 days alone in the wilderness in the depths of winter might seem crazy, but Jessie Gladish keeps going back for more. In previous years, she skied and walked the 430-mile (688-km) Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra between Whitehorse and Dawson City. This year, though, her biggest challenge yet: to complete the race by fat bike. Trail conditions will dictate how much riding she is able to do, versus pushing her bike through the snow as a glorified luggage cart.Contact us Tweet us at @northofordinary or @theyukonkaren Email editor@northordinary.com You can also read/subscribe to Yukon, North of Ordinary magazine.

This week I thought I would chat a little about Fat Bikes and why you need one. I have had a Fat Bike in my quiver for the last 8 years or so and it's one of my favourite bikes to ride. I mostly roll her in the winter but summer riding with a fatbike can be equally as fun! In this episode I reflect back on the Divide. Memories that were bought back to life after a voice memo I received from Brian. I chat about fat biking, gear, layering and some of the preferences I have acquired over the last handful of years of riding in deep winter. As much as I see the value with in-door trainers, I still think that riding outdoors is a much better way to maintain over-all fitness. Not only are you stressing your body in more variable ways, you're also exposing it to cold temperatures and other adversity that I think is super valuable.I couldn't remember the names of the folks who offered AJ and I lodging and food in Horca, so I went back through my posts. Thanks again to Jason and Stacey from Red Bear Lodge in Horca for their kindness and generosity!I hope you enjoy this episode and of course I value your feedback and opinions. Camping with young kids takes work and patience. But time and again Jackie Zinger and her husband pack up the fat bikes, skis, or boat, as well as their twins, and head to Kusawa Lake outside of Whitehorse. The vast lake is the family's four-season playground. As soon as the car is unpacked, all the earlier whining is forgotten....This episode is sponsored by Air North, Yukon's Airline.
On the show today is Kathy Browning. She lives in a small town in Wyoming and is a big fan of fat biking. She started writing a blog about her experiences and as it grew in popularity, it turned into a website called FatBikeGirl.com that is a great resource for everything bike related including fat bike events, product reviews, and inspiration. And of course all of Kathy's blog posts! Now in addition to the FatBikeGirl.com website, there is a private Facebook group, also called Fat Bike Girl for women to share successes and to also ask questions. I found Kathy and her story to be truly inspiring.
