She wrote a blog post for GU Energy Labs titled "Practice over Perfection" about her experience with performance anxiety and struggling with perfectionism while competing within and studying at an Ivy League school. Alex is a trail and ultra runner from Fayetteville, Arkansas, a Diné and Mexican woman, and this year's Gu Energy Labs and Rising Hearts athlete in the Western States Endurance Run. If you followed along with Golden Hour at Western States, you followed Alex's journey from Olympic Valley to Placer High, where she missed the cut off on the track by 2 minutes and 50 seconds. Her day was one of rising above countless challenges and willing her body to the finish line, for reasons far beyond herself. Stef Flippin is a professional trail and ultra runner for Gu Energy labs and lululemon, physician, coach, and podcast host. She had the privilege of being a coach and holistic mentor for GU's and Rising Hearts' diversity runners at this year's edition of Western States. Stef and Alex formed a lasting bond over the last year as a result of Alex's journey to Western States. On episode twenty-eight of Mindful Warrior Radio, we welcome Yuri Hauswald. Yuri is an icon of the gravel cycling world. As a professional endurance cyclist for Giant Bicycles and the Elite Athlete and Community Development Manager for GU Energy Labs, Yuri is also an innovator, storyteller, and mentor to many. He is probably best known for winning the world's premier gravel bike racing event, Unbound, formerly Dirty Kanza, in 2015 at age 44. No stranger to adversity, Yuri talks about his mindset and motivation for facing challenges head on.When asked what has sustained his healthy and extended athletic career Yuri tells us, “I've always enjoyed pushing my physical limits. If I had to put my finger on something—and I don't understand the chemistry of it—it's the endorphins. The chemicals that are triggered in our bodies and in our brains when we go into those states…when you're pushing yourself physically…I've always found some sort of pleasure and joy from doing that.” When asked how he finds the discipline to keep going Yuri says, “I trust my training around certain power zones. My coach and I figured that my diesel engine could run at a high efficiency for long periods of time. Not super-fast. I wasn't fast but I had the ability to hold good power numbers for long periods of time. So, sticking to that and having the discipline to know that.” For the rest of us, he says a simple practice to get through hard times is to “take a deep breath. Take that pause. Have the tantrum. Figure out the next steps. Keep moving forward and you're going to be super proud of yourself when you get through those conditions.” About finding joy in challenging times Yuri says, “Sometimes things just suck. And you have to deal with that suck. You have to figure out a way through. Life is not always joyous, but I do think that when you get through that mud pit of suck—or whatever you want to call it—that the joy you do find on the other side is possibly more powerful and more meaningful because you did go through the suck. The most important thing in all of that is just continuing to move forward, whether it's baby steps or long strides. In this episode we speak with ultra-runner, mother of two girls, and author, Katie Arnold, about her book Running Home. This book is a memoire about Katie’s life. She is a child of divorced parents who grew up in the 70's, and felt like she always needed to be a “good girl” and seek approval from her father. She later became a wife and mother herself, and struggled with mental health. Katie's father introduced her to running as a child when he asked her if she would like to participate in a local 6 mile race, and she continued running throughout her life. Katie deals with a lot of anxiety and grief after the death of her father, and she uses ultra-trail running to help deal with both. Katie Arnold is an elite ultra runner and the 2018 women's champion of Leadville Trail 100 Run. She's also a contributing editor and former managing editor at Outside Magazine, where she worked on staff for 12 years and created and the popular Raising Rippers column about bringing up adventurous kids outdoors. She won the 2018 Jemez Mountains 50 Mile, 2014 TransRockies 3-Day Trail Run, Jemez Mountains 50K, the Mount Taylor 50K. Listen in to get a little taste of what Dave and the event are all about. --------- OFFICIAL unPAved INFORMATION PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley Sunday, October 11, 2020 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania This year, unPAved will take 2 different paths.  Announcing the plans (yes, plural) for 2020’s unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley: The unPAved Full-120 Race, limited to 200 participants in an individual time-trial format, on Sunday, October 11th. The registration lottery is open through August 2nd and participation announcements will be on August 3rd. Event costs $150. The unPAved Weekend Challenge, over 2 of the best cuts of the unPAved course set up as timed segments to test yourself on while you spend a weekend vacation in the Susquehanna River Valley. There will be swag, random prizes and lots of fun ways to play along from August 1st through October 11th and registration is now open. Weekend Challenge costs $40. THE unPAved FULL-120 RACE One of Cyclingnews’ “Top-10 Gravel Races in the U.S.A.” will happen this year, on October 11th, though will be significantly different with a reduced field size, eliminating the mass-start and DONEpaved Finisher Party, and including a significant amount of protocols in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Some highlights: 200 PARTICIPANTS Current guidelines for outdoor events in Pennsylvania is a max of 250 people, which includes staff, volunteers, mechanics, medics, marshalls, everybody. This field size will also help make the sign-in and aid stations manageable with the extra protocols in place.  FULL-120 ONLY There’s only going to be one field this year, so it’s for the Full-120 miles, and 10,000’ of climbing on some of the best gravel and dirt (in other words, unpaved) roads found anywhere. LOTTERY REGISTRATION Participants can profess their desire to participate until midnight, August 2nd. Announcements on attendance will be made on August 3rd, which is when they will be charged the $150 entry fee. OPEN WAITLIST Everybody who doesn’t get into the field will be placed in the Waitlist. If COVID-related restrictions, and the confidences related to it, lift between now and October as many people from the Waitlist will be included as possible & safe. Also, anybody who doesn’t get in from the Waitlist this year will get the opportunity to register early for unPAved 2021.  INDIVIDUAL START TIMES All riders will get a time to arrive in the start area and called-up when it is time for them to begin their 120-mile race, or ride. Riders will be asked for how they plan to ride unPAved during the registration process: “Taking in all the sights, sounds and smells. Ready, willing and able to spend all day out there.” “Not going to win, place or show but that doesn’t mean I’m going to dilly & dally too much.” “If there’s a clock running I’m going to see how I do. She’s planning to come back to defend her title: “I am so excited to participate in this re-imagined version of unPAved that will enable me to stay safe during this time while enjoying one of my favorite places to ride!” THE unPAved WEEKEND CHALLENGE A second option for people who want to ride unPAved, though maybe not all of it, is by spending a weekend riding the beautiful farm roads & big forest hills, and taking on a special challenge over two of the best parts of the unPAved course: “The Proper Parts” and “The Difference!”  This challenge is open from August 1st through October 11th, and open to anybody visiting the region, and willing & able to ride the courses unsupported.  Riders can take this challenge on any weekend between August 1st and October 11th by riding solo, or with their teammates, friends or family (practicing best COVID-19 protocols, of course). The Susquehanna River Visitors Bureau has worked with a number of hotels in the region on special weekend packages—complete with unPAved Swag Bags and special offers from sponsors when they check in. Proceeds will benefit a variety of local charities, as well as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League. Digital routes will be provided that are marked with water and facilities that are available and any nearby food stops. In this podcast, Geoff & Gerry speak with Allison Mrugal. Allison is a professional mountain-biker who started cycling fairly late after spending many years playing soccer and doing gymnastics. Encouraged by her parents and having joined the local West Chester Cycling Team, Allison started cycling more and more. In college, she picked up her first wins, racing collegiate road and mountain-bike.  At that moment she started thinking about setting goals to become a pro-cyclist. When Allison completed her under graduate, she continued with her graduate program at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). The SCAD athletic cycling program took Allison to the next level.We discussed the importance of coaching and mentors to support you and achieve the desired growth.It was great to hear how Allison found her current team “KS Kenda Women MTB” and learn about her view on; not only learning the physical and technical aspects of cycling, but also learning the business side of cycling.Of course, we spent time on Covid-19 and setting short and mid-term goals to be ready when eventually racing starts back up again. Patrick Reagan runs professionally for HOKA One One and GU Energy Labs. He won the 2019 USATF 100 Mile Trail Championships at the Brazos Bend 100 and broke the course record. Also in 2019, he finished 8th at the Western States 100. In his debut at the 100 Mile distance, Reagan won the Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Endurance run and bested the course record by 29 minutes in 2017. He has now won the Javelina Jundred 100 Mile Endurance Run 3 years in a row.

She has three times been a guest lecturer at Colorado College’s “Writing Wild: Literary Journalism of the Outdoors” course, and teaches writing workshops exploring the link between movement and creativity. An elite ultra runner, Katie is the 2018 women's champion of Leadville Trail 100 Run, where she finished 11th overall in field of more than 700 runners. She won the 2018 Jemez Mountains 50 Mile, 2014 TransRockies 3-Day Trail Run, Jemez Mountains 50K, the Mount Taylor 50K. She is two-time overall champion and course record holder at the  Angel Fire 100K. Katie is a sponsored athlete for GU Energy Labs and Balega Socks. As part of her ongoing effort to encourage young athletes, she founded a children’s trail running club, gives motivational talks, and coaches girls’ lacrosse in Santa Fe. Magda Boulet is the VP of Innovation at GU Energy Labs and runs for Hoka. She has many podiums and race wins to her name, including the prestigious Western States 100, and she’s also a US Olympian in the marathon. In today’s episode we talked about how Magda got her job at GU nearly 20 years ago, and how things have changed since then. We also talked about GU’s partnership with InsideTracker, and how Magda and her team have used a science based approach when it comes to product innovation. Magda clearly loves the running community, and what got her out the door the first time was simple: to make friends. Sarah is fortunate enough to have a one-on-one conversation with three-time Ironman champ Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae thanks to AMR’s friends at GU Energy Labs. A mother of a one-year-old daughter, Rinny shares how her workouts changed while she was pregnant, summed up best as, “I exercised, I didn’t train.” Rinny tells how she was “really conservative” resuming running post-partum and building up her mileage and intensity, including occasional stroller-runs. Chuckle along when the Ironmother says her recovery is chasing after her daughter—and how she wouldn’t change it for the world. "My first run ever, I remember just having the feeling of so much joy. I said, "Wow, how come I've never experienced this before in the pool? This is so cool." And it was more about just the fact that I had this feeling of being competitive that never really clicked in swimming."  And the rest, as they say, is history. It's a huge honor to have Magdalena Boulet as my guest on the podcast this week. Magda is one of the most incredible athletes—and human beings—that I've ever had the fortune of getting to know. The 44-year-old Boulet, who grew up in Poland and moved to Germany before immigrating to the United States as a teenager, made the 2008 U.S. Olympic team in the marathon (and owns a personal best of 2:26:22 for the distance), has qualified for numerous national teams, and, over the last five years, has established herself as a top international ultramarathon runner, winning the prestigious Western States Endurance Run in 2015 and, most recently, the grueling Marathon des Sables, a six-day, 250-ish kilometer stage race through the Sahara Desert. Boulet, who works at GU Energy Labs in Berkeley, California as the VP of Innovation, Research, and Development, has called the Bay Area home for over two decades. She's married to former elite miler, Richie Boulet, and the couple has a young son, Owen. We covered a lot of ground in the course of this hour-long conversation and I felt like we barely scratched the surface of Magda's story, what she's accomplished at various distances and disciplines throughout her competitive career, and how she's able to juggle competing at an elite level with being a wife, mom, and executive, amognst other things, so we'll just have to schedule a Round 2 for another time. But, there's plenty we did talk about, including: — Her beginnings at GU Energy Labs in 1998 and how that relationship has evolved over the years as an athlete and employee. — Growing up as a swimmer in Poland, moving to Germany for a brief period of time, and eventually immigrating to Long Beach, California, where she was exposed to running in her late teens. — Getting herself noticed as a junior college runner by tripling at the state meet and how that eventually led to her to Cal and coach Tony Sandoval. — Transitioning to Cal and falling in love with Berkeley, California and the surrounding area. "I was sold within an hour," she told me. — Her relationship with her husband, Richie, how he inspired her to continue running competitively after college, and why he's been a voice of reason for her through the years. — Coach Jack Daniels, whom she worked with for many years after college, and the influence he had on her overall development as an athlete. — The disappointment of not making the Olympic team in 2004, the decision to have child a few months later, and what fueled her motivation leading up to the 2008 Trials. — How a nasty plantar fasciitis injury in October of 2007 had her contemplating retirement a little over six months out from the 2008 Olympic Trials. — The blow-by-blow of 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in Boston, where she led a majority of the race and eventually finished second to Deena Kastor to make the Olympic team. — When (and why) she developed an itch for ultrarunning—and the steps she took to scratch it. — The unpredictability of racing an ultra versus the relative predictability of racing a marathon. — What still excites her from a competitive standpoint, and what's exciting her about running in general right now. — And much more. Our guest this week is a competitive and community ringleader in the cycling industry. Not only is Yuri Hauswald a serious competitor at racing events, but he’s also a community builder, supporting other athletes personally and in his job at GU Energy. Yuri and I are talking about what it means to be competitive and how to motivate yourself when you know every race only has one winner. We’re digging into patience and passion and why you need both to succeed. Yuri’s also sharing his story of how he got into cycling and through that into the outdoor industries. He’s talking about the connections he’s made, and why they mean so much to him on and off the track. This is an amazing episode for entrepreneurs, athletes, and anyone who wants more out of 2017!
