181. Multiple stress fractures to podium finish at UTA100k with Juliette Soule Juliette Soule is a Sydney based trail runner, born in Christchurch NZ. Juliette has surged onto the scene debuting her first 100k during COVID times and most recently placing 2nd at Ultra Trail Kosciuszko 100km in November 2024. But her journey to the podium was anything but smooth. Over the span of 1.5 years, Juliette faced three major bone stress injuries while pushing her ultra-training just that bit too much. Her comeback is a story of both grit and learning. As well as a mindset shift that has forced her to transform her love for running from an obsessive pursuit to a more balanced and sustainable passion. This is something Juliette admits she is still working on achieving. In this episode, Juliette reflects on the training errors that led to her injuries and shares the hard truths of taking time off and rebuilding. She gives us an exclusive look into her Kosci training strategy, which included running just three days a week, and how she's working to prevent future injuries. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, Juliette's insights on training smarter and redefining success are invaluable. Legendary climber Beth Rodden has accomplished so much in her incredible career - and is now also bravely shared her personal journey of growth. I sat down with Beth to hear about her experiences navigating professional climbing as a woman, the highs and challenges of achieving big goals, and how becoming a mother completely shifted her perspective. Beth is one of the best female rock climbers of all time, the youngest woman to conquer 5.14a, and a globally recognized ambassador for the outdoor community. She's also a mother, and an author. Her new memoir, ‘A Light Through the Cracks: A Climber's Story,' vulnerably recounts her harrowing experience with trauma and kidnapping and her healing process. For any athletes, parents or anyone pursuing self-discovery, I hope you'll be inspired by Beth's wisdom on finding balance, speaking your truth, and embracing vulnerability. It was so powerful to chat with Beth - I know you'll enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Here are a few key takeaways: - Navigating professional climbing as a woman and the evolution of the industry towards greater inclusivity and respect. - The importance of owning one's story, finding one's voice, and speaking out against injustice, even when it's scary - The challenges of achieving big goals and deriving a sense of self-worth solely from accomplishments - How parenthood can shift one's priorities, sense of purpose, and relationships with others and one's body in a life-changing way. - Healing from trauma and learning to embrace vulnerability and emotions through therapy, relationships, and personal reflection. I'm so grateful for the support of my new sponsor, Tailwind Nutrition, and the community support that comes along with it. We all know how distracted we can get on runs, for all kinds of reasons, but did you ever really think about how it all adds up? Milo's film “The Reality of Running” features these moments in a beautiful way. It's brilliant to watch, made me laugh out loud, and conveys all the feels of a full day on the trail, in a tight 3-minute package. I love it and it was clear from chatting with Milo he knew what he wanted to accomplish with the film. He loves the outdoors and the opportunity to showcase them, and certainly advises anyone chasing their dreams to do so with gusto.“Make time for the projects you really believe in. It's easy to get distracted by the money and the paycheque, and those are really important because they help you buy the gear and the equipment and everything that is necessary for these passion projects. Ultimately, the passion projects are the ones that open up doors to clients that you want to work with.”Milo has some other ideas for future films and is thrilled to be included in the Trail Running Film Festival in the meantime. He was a lot of fun to chat with and I'm excited to follow him along as he seems like an easy person to cheer for. “For me, it started with a sketchbook. I'm dyslexic, so for me, reading and writing have always been a little bit more difficult and so when I wanted to share these wild crazy experiences outside, I didn't do it through essays or a lot of words or poetry. It was always through sketches."Max Romey learned how to express himself through his artistic side. Now his creations are inspiring the artistic side of trail runners and outdoor lovers all over the world. Max Romey Productions produced “Footprints Running Camp” and was able to blend the world of trail running and idea building at this unique conference. Max has a really fun way of blending sketches and film and part of his drive comes from inspiring others through things like The Trail Running Film Festival. His passion for the outdoors is evident and he adores the trail-running community.“Having that community behind means everything. There's probably more road runners on earth, but the trail runners, they're down to earth, they get something. When you're out in these places, you have this connection that I haven't found anywhere else. And I've been lucky enough to look.”Max is a positive person to chat with and I really enjoyed chatting with him. It was fun to hear some challenges he faces but also what made him want to create the way he does. “She's so positive. She's wise. And she is so strong. She's so tough. And she inspires me. So yeah. It was an easy decision to pick Nettie to make my first movie.”Jessica Vandenbush chose Aneta (Nettie) Zeppetella to feature in her first film and it was a great decision. The film is super fun and Nettie is a character you will fall in love with. Jessica's film is beautifully shot and it was great to hear a bit about the challenges she faced as well as what lies ahead! It was also really awesome to hear about her inspiration.“I was so inspired by the genre in the first place. Watching those trail running movies at the film fest changed my life. And when I came around to wanting to make a movie that really helped women feel possible in our sport, no matter where they come from, no matter how old they are, no matter having a family, having a career, no matter if they had mountains to train on. I wanted to make a movie about this beautiful woman I knew.”Jessica also has an independent print issue trail running magazine called “Eat Clean Run Dirty”, which you can check out here.Nettie From OhioBy Jessica VandenbuschAneta (Nettie) Zeppetella is an Ohio Ultrarunner tackling some of the least-Ohio-style terrain (Western States, Fat Dog 120, Hurt) and working to inspire more women in her area to tackle long distances. You can catch “Nettie from Ohio” at the Rio Theatre on Tuesday April 18. “Every single person, start to finish, is treated like they won the race, like they've been the most important person there. That's a part of our DNA. Making sure that every single person that comes across the finish line feels celebrated.”Coast Mountain Trail Running is a finely tuned machine at this point. The group has been putting on events in British Columbia for quite some time, and they've got it down as well as a participant could hope for. Gary Robbins and Geoff Langford are the two Race Directors for CMTR, and on top of their love for trail running events, they also have a passion for multisport events. That's how they came up with Conquer the Vedder, the SUP, gravel bike, and trail run event coming to Cultus Lake May 27-28. This will be the second year for the event, and 2 years is about how long a race takes to put together, from concept to race day. “That's always a two-year window and that's what I say to anybody who reaches out asking about the event side of things. Your best-case scenario is 18 months and that would need some luck and some connections. But you need to give yourself a 2 year window to bring something to life because the permit process and everything that goes along with it, and especially coming to a new community, a lot of relationships need to be established and a lot of new stakeholders need to be identified and connected with.”Gary was great to chat with and it was fun to learn a bit more about how this event came together. I've always loved the events that CMTR puts on and so I was thrilled to be able to chat on the podcast and have Conquer the Vedder as a sponsor for the Vancouver screening of the Trail Running Film Festival! Next, Corrine talks to writer and runner Jared Beasley about the quiet, but seductive appeal of the backyard race phenomenon. His piece, “Everyone's Got A Shot at a Backyard, Right?” looks at the enigmatic format and how an average runner can get (happily?) sucked in. Thank you yet again for joining us for another episode of the Into The Wee Hours Podcast! So happy as always to bring you stories and voices of everyday adventurers, and this one is absoultely inspirational! This episode brings you the voice of Maree Connor, an overall busy woman wearing many hats - only some being mother, wife, sister, ultra runner, and Clinical Nurse Unit Manager. (We also talk about the other hats she wears like craft beer drinker, dad-joke teller, and designated bike pusher for her kids.) We were lucky enough to steal Maree away for an excellent chat during Mother's Day, after her two young daughters had made her well-deserved breakfast in bed! While wearing many hats, we mostly focused on Maree's ultra running achievements which include, but are not limited to, winning and lowering the women's record at Brisbane Trail Ultra (BTU) [watch her interview with Race Director, Shona Stephenson, here!!], winning Elephant Trail Race, completing (TWICE) and winning and lowering the women's record at Coast to Kosci, and as she so casually drops at the end of the conversation getting to Mount Everest Base Camp! We hear how Maree had serious back surgery and has incredibly come back stronger with a new lease on life, and takes advantage of her new situation to say "thank you" for this fantastic opportunity. Maree is so humble about her achievements, but it is clear that she puts in the hard work (while being self-coached!) to balance her life and juggle priorities to find success in so many aspects of her life.  Maree has a full plate planned ahead including Southern Sydney 24 Hour Ultra (a 24-hour track race) only 5 weeks before returning to Brisbane Trail Ultra again (because you have to do everything twice, right Maree?!). She tells us how she also hopes to one day hike the Anapurna Circuit with her husband and daughters! We started to dive into a bit about Maree's nutrition and how she mostly uses Tailwind Nutrition before our call dropped out! So about midway through, we apologise for the disruption in recording, but we are so grateful for Maree's (and our listener's) patience with us through recording! We hope it does not take away from the quality of the conversation with Maree! Follow along with Maree's adventures via Instagram @mareeconnor_. Jeff Vierling, the co-founder of Tailwind Nutrition, was scheduled to join us on this episode and unfortunately couldn't make it at the last minute, but Art did a great job of sharing Tailwind Nutrition's story, how Jeff came to create the company's signature Endurance Fuel, and how Art later joined the team and co-developed their recovery product, Rebuild. Art and I had a detailed discussion exploring the science behind key sports nutrition principles, using Tailwind's products to help exemplify many of these principles, including: Specific nutrient needs for athletes (especially with endurance sports), including protein, carbs, electrolytes, and fluidsThe timing of these nutrientsReal food vs sports productsSolid vs liquid caloriesTraining the gutHow many calories we can absorbThe Low-Carb High-Fat (i.e. ketogenic style) diet and how high carb sports nutrition products are used when following this diet You can hear more about this in Episode 8 with Mike McKnightAs a sports dietitian, I also found it interesting to learn a bit about how a nutrition product like Tailwind comes to life, going from a tiny business out of a garage to a multi-million dollar company. There are SO many products out there, and I always wonder how people go from seeing something missing in the market to creating it and selling it internationally.Hope you enjoy, and if you're in NYC and want to try some Tailwind samples - let me know! Today you’re going to hear from three Ultramarathoners on how they fuel for races, what their post long run fueling looks like, and how things might be different if they were training for shorter races. It’s helpful to study ultramarathoners when it comes to fueling, even if you have no interest in running ultra distances, because it’s here that fueling becomes virtually as important as the training itself. It doesn’t matter how fit you are if you don’t fuel well as an ultra runner... We’re doing this today because we’re celebrating the relaunch of our fueling program Finish Strong. I’ve added new material, updated our fueling schedules, included more expert interviews, and there’s now an extra discount for Tailwind Nutrition. You can see all the details of Finish Strong here. Abby Hall placed 8th at CCC earlier this year (which is known as UTMB’s sister race). Anna Mae Flynn won the Speedgoat 50k this year and Abby Levene placed 9th at this year’s Way Too Cool 50k. I’m going to ask all three of these athletes the same 3 questions:  How do you fuel during an ultramarathon? Give us an overview of what that looks like. When you finish a long run, what does your post-run fueling look like? How would you fuel different for workouts and long runs if you were training for a shorter event like, say a 10k?

Welcome to Episode 6 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring elite ultrarunner Maggie Guterl (aka “Maggatron”). Maggie and I connected through Tailwind Nutrition, where she works as the Athletes & Events Manager, including managing the Tailwind Trailblazer group that I joined this year. If you're one of my nutrition clients, that's where all those awesome Endurance Fuel and Rebuild samples have been coming from! As I've said many times, I only support products that I genuinely like, and Tailwind definitely makes that list (FYI - Tailwind is not sponsoring this podcast, and I am not receiving any compensation to talk about their products). Maggie recently moved to Durango, CO (where Tailwind is based) from Pennsylvania, where she grew up. After running her first marathon in 2009, she caught the endurance bug and ran her first ultra (a 24-hour race!) in 2011. She's competed in numerous 24 hour races, Big's Backyard Ultra (which she will be racing again on October 19th), and Barkley Marathons in 2018 (an insane race if you haven't heard of it), among countless other ultras. In 2016, she placed 2nd in the Georgia Death Race and got her golden ticket to Western States 100 (essentially the Boston of ultras), where she placed 8th female. This was one of my first podcast interviews, and I had so much fun talking to Maggie (as you can tell from all my laughter!) and hearing about how she got into the sport, shifted from bartending and partying life to being an ultra runner, and how she has been able to dial in her everyday and sports nutrition. Turns out you CAN run long distance and not puke your guts out! ;) UPDATE: Maggie won Big's! As in, she was the last PERSON (not woman) standing. Yes, there is such a thing. You’ve, no doubt, heard of the Iditarod race across Alaska with dogs and sleds, but did you know they have a race where they run the course on bike and on foot? I didn’t either!! Holy freakin’ cow. Yes, competitors traverse 1000 miles across Alaska on foot with a sled wrapped around their waist. They carry all their own gear and supplies on this sled and, as the website says, “Every year on the Iditarod Trail is different and conditions change in the blink of an eye during the journey. ITI 1000 competitors may face temperatures from -50F to 35F, gale force winds, rain, blizzards, waist-deep snow, mud, glare ice and bright sunny skies - all in the same day.  I’ll let Pete tell you all about his journeys and almost obsession with this event that finally led to his victory earlier this year.   The Running Event made its way back to Austin this past year and this local gal couldn’t have been happier! As their website indicates, The Running Event consists of more than 250 brands including some of the biggest fitness companies on the planet as well as innovative newcomers. It is, as they say, a great opportunity to see new product before any other channel of distribution and meet with key executives at the best suppliers to the run specialty channel. It’s also the chance for the fitness-oriented companies to discuss industry trends and strategize with each other through changing times and shifting buying habits. For a fitness enthusiast, podcast and writer like me, it’s the chance to go behind the curtains, catch a glimpse and sample what’s to come. I also see it as an opportunity to highlight companies, old and new, who are working diligently to improve our well-being, safety, comfort, recovery and fitness potential. In talking to business owners, marketing gurus and salespeople, you see their true passion for what they do. If we don't invest in the future of our own health and fitness, what can we invest in?  Even though I learned about a variety of products from footwear, to nutrition, to compression, to bras, one thing rings true from all of the vendors and companies - they care about the end user. In fact, these days, so much of their marketing depends on it. Positive word of mouth carries more weight than any ad campaign in a magazine ever will. That’s why I’m honored to share my positive experience with many of the booths I visited at The Running Event. So many welcomed me into their space to share their stories. Some of the products are fairly new, like family-owned maple syrup producers, Untapped. Others are larger companies like this year’s Kona shoe juggernaut, Hoka One One, who seem to have found “their time to fly” as their slogan suggests. Big or small, new or veteran, each company had a human element and, on their behalf, I'd like to share their enthusiasm. This isn’t so much a review of products because, the way I see it, every one of those companies is doing good. My only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to visit every one of those 250 companies.

Ten years ago Jeff Vierling finished his first Leadville 100 mountain bike race despite having terrible GI issues. That marked the day that he began his quest to find the perfect nutrition & hydration product. He didn't find it. So rather than changing sports to bowling, he decided to learn everything there was to know about nutrition and hydration and "bake" his own. This was the genesis of Tailwind Nutrition. We talk to Jeff about what he learned about nutrition and electrolytes and how Tailwind may just be the answer to many of our problems.
