In this week's ImperFIX, we revisit an episode from season 2 with Australian BMX racer, world champion and Olympian, Sam Willoughby. In 2016, Sam experienced a life-changing neck injury which left him a tetraplegic. In this snippet, we hear Sam describe the bike accident that lead to his injury and his incredible journey of recovery. Most importantly, he shares how meeting NASCAR crew chief, Booty Barker, inspired him to live life again. 20 year old Jesse Asmus is a determined young man. He clearly knows what he wants to do in life and BMX. He told me in order for him to become the best he's going to have to leave Australia. He says Sam Willoughby has inspired him to strive for greatness. Presently Asmus is ranked 4th in the world for U23. Last year he won the Oceania Championships and the overall Australian National series. Crazy to think it was his first year doing international racing. Asmus says the bigger the race the more pumped he gets to succeed. In 2024 he's working on his gates and first straight. He's planning to do the World Cup Calendar and spend some time here in the U.S. racing.
End of Season Catch Up Podcast with Dr. J. We talk about Summer Camps, Dr. J's new job, Pro racing at the Grands, Alec Bob winning the UCI Pump Track World Championships, Sam Willoughby parting ways with the Australian National Team, Barry Nobles' Social Media, and has Harry Leary been canceled? A little scoop for 2024, and more. Photo Credit: Fifteen BMX
Brandon Cato is an enigma for me. I don't mean that in a bad way. What I mean is he simply moves to his own beat. One minute you'll see him at the track and the next minute he's focused on school and you don't see him for a while. It's not that he doesn't love BMX it's just that Cato has a variety of interests and he likes to explore them. Here's the crazy thing, when he gets back on the track it is as if he never left. He's crazy fast and hella smooth. It's as if the guy is never out of shape. At the moment he's in school and preparing for Grands. Being the private guy that he is I was surprised he agreed to do an interview with me. I caught up with him on a Saturday while I was in Minnesota. I literally did the interview in my hotel room. I brought my podcast equipment with me because I wasn't going to miss this opportunity. Sitting in my hotel room looking out the window we talked about school, riding and racing for B.A.B.S, his admiration for Sam Willoughby and Maris Strombergs and the future.
George Goodall started racing in 1979 when his friend Jack invited him to a BMX race. He was living in Boulder, Colorado with his dad at the time. His first race he got last in every Moto. A month later Goodall made the box and the rest is history. George says riding the streets of Boulder helped him become one with his bike. He raced a lot on the local scene at the Adam's county indoor and at Castlerock. He attributes the rides from Robert Raymonde's dad for helping getting to races to improve. He didn't hit the national scene until he was 15 years old. Goodall says the national racing wasn't easy for him. By the time he was 18 years old he turned pro. He sums up his pro career even after turning AA pro twice as a "5th place semi guy." He would eventually retire because of family commitments. As soon as his son was able to race Goodall turned his attention from show cars back to bikes. He would eventually race for Redline. Some people have all the luck when having teammates like Jason Carnes, Denzel Stein, Alise and Sam Willoughby to Jeff Upshaw. The team would eventually fold and Goodall would end up racing for his current sponsor Supercross. I had a lot fun with this interview. Goodall is funny, informative, and an all-around good guy.
A couple of weeks ago Kenny Hunter and I headed up to Temecula to meet up with Maris Strombergs to shoot some photos at the pump track then headed over to his house to film an interview. We talk about Maris getting back into BMX a little more lately, coaching and potentially working with China on their BMX program alongside thoughts on today's racing, some of the guys on top at the moment in the Elite class going into Paris in 2024. We turn back the clock a bit and talk about Maris moving to the US after winning the 08 Olympic Games, battling with Kyle Bennett and Randy Stumpfhauser for the ABA Title, the London Games, not worried about having guys like Sam Willoughby and Mike Day behind him on a 3rd straight on any Supercross track, playing golf, having kids and much more. Our fledgling podcast has finally cracked 10 episodes and what a way to celebrate by having Sam Willoughby dial in via the Pacific telegraph line to give the boys the lowdown on his stellar career, from where it started, to the day he looped out just weeks after the Rio Olympic games, and beyond, as we uncover what a true fighter this Aussie BMX legend is. With Khalen and Sam sharing the Olympic stage in London, where one grabbed a silver medal, and the other tasted the grimy Pommy dust, there's a shared history to delve into and the insights into how these two approached BMX racing at it's highest level is golden, from USABMX Pro titles to the Olympics. We get deep into mindset, and how Sam's processes saw him win multiple rainbow jerseys, including both his Junior Elite years of 2008 and 2009. But this is only the start. We also get deep into the current situation of elite racing here in Australia and the decline of depth at this level. We explore the differences of culture from when these boys were firing, to the sad situation of having just one male place at the recent Tokyo games. From coaching to mentors, from family to mates, we find out what makes this champion tick.
In this episode is a first for the boys as they packed the camera and their bike bags, then flew into Adelaide to film the latest podcast at Pirate Life Brewery. As guests of the Sam Willoughby track building crew, Recreation Living, the morning of the podcast recording Khalen and the old guy test rode Australia's latest SX track build to give it the BMX, Beers and Bullshit seal of approval. Then with the backdrop of one of Pirate Life's conference spaces, there was a line up of 3 Australian Olympic BMX racers on the couches (Anthony Dean, Brian Kirkham and host Khalen), along with the SW91 track builder (s) Trent Lupton, and main test pilots Max Cairns, Jake Svens and David Gosling. This track is being built, and ridden along the way and we chat about how the f*#k you get a $6M project off the ground and what hurdles and challenges the crew have overcome during the build. What changes were made from the plan and when it's likely to be up and running for the SA BMX community. Then the boys that repp'd Australia at the O-Show chat about life during their careers, and what they're doing now days. A real insight into what it's like to represent your country and whether the sacrifice was worth it. Compulsory watching for those new to the sport to learn about the history of BMX as it entered into the Olympic era.Massive thanks to Pirate Life Brewery for giving us a cool spot to record, and supplying the beers to lubricate the chat. One of my goals for this podcast is to share real-life stories of women who have overcome challenges to live their ideal life or help others to do just that. They may not be film stars or celebrities but they have become the heroine in their own life story, living their dreams and empowering others while staying true to themselves. My aim with these interviews is to inspire YOU to find your passion, step out into your power set yourself exciting goals and know that you have the strength inside you to overcome your challenges and start living YOUR ideal life. Today I'm really excited to welcome Sam Willoughby to the show just one day before one of the biggest days in her business calendar! Sam is the Managing Director of the multi-award-winning What's On 4 organisation which includes the hugely popular What's On 4 kids online directory for children's activity providers across the UK. When Sam left corporate life because her employer was not interested in offering her flexible working arrangements after she had her daughter, she became passionate about building a business that gave her and her whole team a better balance between work and family life. Millions of parents have used the What's On 4 websites to help them with family life and over 20,000 have attended their live events too. Sam was also shocked to find out that most organised children's activities have no specific regulations and so in 2014, she brought together a Founding Team of children's activities providers and experts to launch the not-for-profit Children's Activities Association to put in place the first independent standards for all children's activities and much more to help parents, schools and nurseries across the UK. In this frank interview, you'll hear how Sam took the skills she'd acquired in corporate life and applied them to her new business, how she learned the hard way to create the right working environment for yourself including building in self-care early on, the importance she places on working with clients and colleagues that you really WANT to work with and how a business coach helped her to overcome some of the challenges she's faced building the What's On 4 brand. As always you'll find all the links for connecting with Sam in the show notes at michellereevescoaching.com/listen
In this episode we have a conversation about one of trucking's most critical issues - truck parking! There is a severe shortage of parking for truck drivers and we speak with Scott Grenerth of TSPS.io and RigRest.com to find out what's being done to improve it. We had the opportunity to speak with Scott after he led a panel discussion with TxDOT and truck drivers at the Great American Trucking Show. We also collected input from our driver Sam Willoughby, who provided some valuable first hand insight into the problem. Through new technologies and regulatory study from TxDOT, positive changes are being made. Thanks for listening! Send feedback to us on social media (@PDQAmerica) or aaron@pdqamerica.com
‘A testament to our Union and our country’ Canada’s Alana Gattinger is the first female Team Manager at a men’s Rugby World Cup. She’s been speaking to Sportshour ahead of their opening match against Italy in Fukuoka on Thursday. Solid Gold Hits Noah Lyles and Sandi Morris are both gold medal favourites for this month’s World Athletics Championships. But, alongside their sprinting and pole-vaulting this season, the pair have co-written, recorded and performed a song with the Swiss band, Baba Shrimps. That performance was to a crowd of 25 thousand at the Zurich Diamond League meeting – and, in Noah’s case, he picked up the microphone only an hour after winning the 100 metres. ‘You’re not entitled to any of it working out, but it’s really fun to try’ Alise Willoughby is a reigning BMX World Champion, who also won Silver at the Rio Olympic Games. Her husband and coach is Sam Willoughby, who won his Silver at the London Olympics in 2012. Sam's own BMX career was ended when he suffered a life-changing injury just over three years ago. He lost the use of his legs after a training accident. Together, they got through that very difficult time and are now a world championship winning coach and athlete combination. That doesn’t mean there weren’t some darker moments though, especially in the hours and days after Sam’s crash. Net Benefits Zimbabwe made their Netball World Cup debut in Liverpool this summer, going on to finish in eighth place. But what’s next for the team? Sportshour has spoken to the team’s goal shooter, Joyce Takaidza, and Head Coach Lloyd Makunde about what the lasting impact of the Gems’ achievements could be. Chief amongst the issues to be tackled is finance. Caroline, who commentated on the country’s World Cup journey, has been speaking to Kirsty Coventry, the Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer and now Zimbabwe’s Minister for Youth and Sport, about how the country can ensure the World Cup is the beginning of a journey, not the end.
