Like many Olympians and Paralympians, Susannah Scaroni has had to overcome her share of challenges. In her case, a car accident at the age of 5 caused her to need a wheelchair for mobility, a journey that led her to adaptive sports. Her initial experience was not positive. But when she discovered a welcoming adaptive sports program in Spokane, Washington, her interest grew. As her training grew, so did her accomplishments. And eventually that led to a spot on the Paralympic team at the 2012 London Games in the marathon, which has become something of a specialty. She competed again in Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020 and in Paris will compete in her fourth Paralympic Games, having qualified for the marathon, the 800 meter, the 1500 meter and the 5000 meter races. While she has traveled the world competing in some of the biggest events around, the process has not been easy, and still poses challenges. Not all event organizers are doing the best they can to accommodate adaptive sports athletes, even at events as large as the World Championships. In this discussion, we trace Saroni's journey to adaptive sports, talk about her experience at the Paralympics and other major sports events and delve into things event organizers and host cities can and should be thinking about when it comes to the next generation of para athletes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Despite the suspension, his previous competition results remained intact.2020年2月,在2月28号国际体育仲裁法庭宣布“世界反兴奋剂机构上诉孙杨和国际永联案”的结果,此次宣判的结果是孙杨被禁赛8年。鉴于国际泳联此前并未对孙杨处以悬停参赛资格的处罚、孙杨在2018年9月的此次事件短时间前后的兴奋剂检测都为阴性,因此,孙杨在本次裁决前所取得的所有比赛成绩均为有效。Sun immediately appealed the ruling to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, but his efforts proved unsuccessful. In March 2022, the court upheld the ban, keeping him sidelined until May 2024.However, on May 28 this year, Sun completed his 4-year, 3-month suspension, marking his return to competitive swimming. On the same day, his official swimming studio posted on Weibo, stated, "Transcend yourself, swimmers fear nothing." When I received the final ruling in 2020, I was determined to return in four years - I would not retire," Sun told The Paper.孙杨接受《澎湃新闻》采访,提及回归一事时表示:“2020年,当我接到仲裁最终结果的时候我就下定决心,4年后我一定会回来,不会选择退役。”Driven by his deep love for the sport, Sun expressed his desire to continue competing. Though acknowledging he is no longer in his prime, he believes his return is a personal mission, a commitment to himself and his swimming career.孙杨说,出于对游泳这项运动的热爱,也想坚持下去。虽然已经不再年轻,但还想以一个游泳运动员的身份继续比赛,决定回归也是给自己一个交代。Court of Arbitration for Sportn.国际体育仲裁法庭
Every member of Noemie Fox's family is an Olympic athlete. Her mother, Myriam Fox-Jerusalmi, won bronze in 1996 for canoeing slalom (K1), while their father Richard Fox represented Britain for the same event in 1992. Her sister Jess, 30, made her Olympic debut as an 18-year-old at the 2012 London Games, going on to compete at Rio, Tokyo and Paris and winning six medals including three gold. Although Noemie, 27, has been competing at the international level since 2013, she has previously missed out on a spot on the Olympic team because Australia's only slot went to Jess. But a new Olympic event introduced this year — the kayak cross — finally gave Noemie a chance to represent her country. On her return from Paris, Noemie talks to Charis Chang about what it's like to finally join the rest of her family, not just as an Olympian but as a gold medallist.

A new swimming world record, a first singles tennis gold and a string of historic moments to remember — the Chinese delegation ended its Paris Olympic campaign on a high note with resounding success both on and off the field. As the Olympic flame went out after an extraordinary show of human strength and endurance for two weeks, Team China's outstanding performance, highlighted by a record haul of 40 gold medals, the adorable nature of young athletes and their friendly exchanges with their foreign peers, was enshrined in the history of the Games in the French capital.Bolstered by the whopping contribution of 27 gold medals from its six traditionally strong sports — diving, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, shooting and weightlifting — the Chinese delegation finished with 40 gold medals and a total haul of 91 in Paris, surpassing its previous record at the London Games in 2012 to achieve the nation's best outcome in gold medal tally at any overseas edition of the Summer Olympics. At Beijing 2008, it won 48 gold medals and 100 overall. On Sunday, the United States edged past China to finish on top of the Paris Olympics chart with a total medal haul of 126, including 40 golds. The first-ever clean sweep of all eight gold medals up for grabs in the Olympic diving discipline by China's "dream team" and the world-conquering Chinese table tennis squad's complete collection of all five titles have only cemented the nation's stranglehold on these sports.More encouraging, a series of major breakthroughs — such as China's first tennis singles Olympic gold, won by women's ace Zheng Qinwen, swimming prodigy Pan Zhanle's world record-breaking win in the men's 100m freestyle and teen cyclist Deng Yawen's trailblazing golden finish in BMX freestyle park — have all heralded China's strong foray into Western-dominated sports with much balanced athletic prowess.Zhou Jinqiang, vice-president of the Chinese delegation, said on Sunday at a news conference in Paris that the overall performance at the Games could be summed up with one word-"breakthrough"."We reached new heights in terms of the total number of gold medals won (at an overseas edition) and the number of events that we first won medals in. We also proved that our athletic strength has been significantly expanded to more sports," said Zhou.Zhou added that the Chinese delegation has successfully completed its mission and realized its goals.Sun Yingsha, world No 1 in women's table tennis, said that China's overall prosperity and strength have served as a proud source of motivation for all her fellow Olympians."It's really an honor, and we all played confidently, knowing that a strong home country is supporting us," Sun said, after helping her squad beat Japan 3-0 in the women's team final on Saturday to secure China's 300th gold medal at the Summer Olympics since the Chinese delegation's debut at Los Angeles 1984.By putting their colorful and vibrant images on full display at the pinnacle of their careers, China's modern-day Olympians have broken the stereotypes portrayed by Western media about their hard-working but sometimes reticent predecessors decades ago, representing a more open and confident generation of athletes who no longer hide their light under a bushel. In addition, being able to speak directly to the international audiences in fluent English has certainly helped this generation more.Chen Yiwen, who won two diving gold medals, in individual 3m springboard and the synchronized event with partner Chang Yani, has broken the language barrier and bonded closely with some of her formidable foreign rivals, while also exuding confidence during her international media interviews in English.Chen's adorable selfies with teammate Chang and Australian rival Maddison Keeney, the silver medalist in 3m individual, have gone viral on social media platforms at home and abroad, earning thousands of likes for the "true embodiment of Olympic value".Speaking about the friendship with her Chinese peers, Keeney said: "I feel like these girls, they're like my sisters. I'm just really lucky to be able to have a positive competitive relationship with them. No matter what happens on the board, it doesn't affect our relationships outside."Reporter: Sun Xiaochen
This week Will and James are joined by bike design visionary Dimitris Katsanis. Dimitris worked alongside Chris Boardman in the Secret Squirrel Club, creating the pioneering bikes and kit that helped Team GB dominate the 2012 London Games. Ever wondered where the term 'marginal gains' came from? Yep, Dimitris and his colleagues, whose work at the time was so secret not even his boss, one Dave Brailsford, was allowed to know.Across a career spanning three decades and counting, Dimitris has had a hand in winning over 100 gold Olympic and World cycling medals, and right now his components and creations can be seen on four national teams' Olympic bikes (though he won't say which ones). Today he runs his own company, Metron A.E, which 3D-prints cutting edge parts for sport, aerospace and the medical industry. He also 3D-printed Fillipo Ganna's Hour record Pinarello Bolide F. The entire bike. This is a man who has a story about everyone from Wiggins to Ganna, and who can explain aerodynamic drag with just his hands. Nicola Adams was one of the stand-out stars of the London Games in 2012 when she became the first woman to win an Olympic boxing gold medal. And then she won gold again in Rio four years later. Born into a tough life in Leeds in the early 1980s, Nicola immediately loved enjoyed the discipline she found in boxing at the age of 12. If her punches have unnerved her opponents in the ring, her charm and winning smile have perhaps been even more disarming. During the 1908 and 1948 London Olympics, the royal family was deeply involved. King Edward VII opened the 1908 games at White City Stadium. Originally meant for Rome, the event moved to London after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906. Legend has it that Queen Alexandra influenced the marathon's length to 26.2 miles, a distance that became official in 1921.The 1948 London Games, known as “The Austerity Games,” were the first since World War II and were opened by King George VI.Princess Anne made history as the first British royal to compete in the Olympics in 1976, participating in the equestrian event. Riding the Queen's horse, Goodwill, Anne's journey included a fall that led to a concussion. Her equestrian pursuits are a royal tradition, from King Charles II's love for horse racing to William and Harry's polo matches.Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! The Summer Olympic Games are here! That means more than 300 events, ten thousand athletes and millions of spectators coming to watch. And the athletes are not the only ones with an Olympian task; the organizers of the Paris Games pledged to make their event emit only half of the carbon pollution of the 2012 London Games. In order to make that happen, they are trying to do more — by doing less. Instead of building huge new structures, they've renovated a number of existing venues and installed a lot of temporary structures that can be used elsewhere in the future. And that's just one example. So what can we learn from the Paris Games that can transcend the big event and lead to broader emissions reductions? This week Dr Louise is joined by sprinter Desirèe Henry who is representing Team GB at the Paris Olympics this year. Desirèe is no stranger to the Olympics – she was one of seven young athletes who lit the Olympic caldron at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Games, plus she took home a bronze medal in the 4 X 100m relay at the 2016 Rio Games. And she'll be heading to Paris on a high after being part of Team GB's gold medal-winning women's 4x100m relay team at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in June. Desirèe talks about the challenges of competing throughout the menstrual cycle and coping with heavy periods, plus the importance of talking openly about these issues, maintaining a healthy weight and body positivity. Finally, Desirèe shares three tips to help you lead a happier and healthier life: Set one goal every day. It doesn't have to be anything big, it could be drinking water or having a piece of fruit every day, but it's something that will add up over the week and benefit your lifestyle in a positive way. Try to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle. It could be watching a YouTube yoga video or anything that just allows your body to move, that increases blood flow around the body and helps you get in some extra stretching. Check in on other people more often. Just find out how they are and show them that somebody cares – you'll be appreciated. We are thrilled to introduce our Olympic Special documentary series to celebrate the Olympic year. This series takes you on a journey through the history and evolution of the Olympic Games, spotlighting the monumental achievements and the intimate, behind-the-scenes stories that have shaped the world's premier sporting event. We are onto our third Olympics as we turn our attention to London. As always this is a 2 part series. In Part 2, Nicole continues with two sets of legendary guests who share their personal experiences and memories from the Games:
"Working Hard is a Talent in itself" says Laurent Carol, Deputy Technical Director of the Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee, and former Olympic swimmer. In the first of two shows on the Olympics, my guests this week are: - Laurent Carnol - Deputy Technical Director, Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee; Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL), former Olympic swimmer - Dr Yves Dominicy - Sport Statistician - Loïc Hoscheit - ALAD Director - anti-doping agency Luxembour - Marie Muller - former Olympic athlete - Judo Laurent Carnol is the Deputy Technical Director of the Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee; Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL), and a former Olympian swimmer himself. Laurent took part in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. In London, Laurent got to the semi finals in 200m breaststroke and was a finalist several times in the European Championships for the same event. Aside from his own successful career as an elite athlete, Laurent was a teacher at the Sport Lycée in Luxembourg, a lecturer at Lunex University and Dual Career Coordinator at the Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sport. Laurent talks to us about the selection process which decides what delegation will eventually be going to the Olympics in Paris this summer. The qualification pathways and athlete preparation requires enormous effort not just from the athlete themselves, but also from the team around that athlete. Yves Dominicy is a sport statistician and has written two books with Christophe Ley: Science meets Sports: when statistics are more than numbers Statistics Meets Sports: What We Can Learn from Sports Data Sport analytics collects data to try to understand patterns therein. For instance, it is used for ranking and prediction, talent identification, scheduling and injury prevention. Machine learning is now being used in tennis to profile the emotional expressions of tennis players and link that to performance. Yves also mentions that tennis rankings may become more accurate if based on serve / return etc. rather than points. During Covid-19 in 2020, the International Swimming League organised a whole month of races providing an intense, short period to analyse the effect of multiple races on the performance of different profiles. The use of data analytics is extremely valuable to prevent injury. It is now possible to run risk profiles to plan around potential injury points for a person. Loïc Hoscheit is the Director of ALAD, Agence Luxembourgeoise antidopage. Luxembourg's independent anti-doping agency tasked with supervising the country's most high-level athletes and competitions; they are tasked with ensuring Luxembourg sends out clean athletes. ALAD also offers guidance to all athletes with the potential to qualify for the Olympics and ensures a solid testing programme is carried out prior to the Games within this group. The rules are complex, and keep changing. Naturally there is often a cloud of uncertainty around medication, but also supplements. Marie Müller, a judoka (judo player), received a wild card from the IOC in 2008 where she finished 9th in the Beijing Games. Between 2009 and 2012, Marie entered the world top 16 for judo in her category and qualified for the London Games in 2012. Series Four of Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast continues in fascinating fashion as the multiple Olympic Gold Medallist finally sits down with one of modern sailing's most decorated athletes, multiple World Sailor of the Year, Tom Slingsby. In the wonderfully diverse sport of competitive sailing there can be few athletes whose accolades are as wide ranging as Sydney born Australian Tom Slingsby. At just thirty eight years of age, he boasts an unprecedented roll call of success that includes an Olympic Gold medal, an America's Cup win, two Moth World Titles, two SailGP titles, multiple Laser world championship wins, he's even won line honours in both the Sydney to Hobart and Middle Sea Races. It's an incredibly diverse list of titles, all stemming from one resolution made as a fifteen year old boy watching the 2000 Sydney Olympics...:"I was down there (at Bradleys Head) everyday, and just seeing the Olympic arena, I just, in that moment, watching that final where Michael Blackburn took bronze and Ben Ainslie match raced Robert Scheidt to gold, I said right then and there that I want to be a part of this arena."That moment was the catalyst to a remarkable, and still ongoing career. But it wasn't always easy. Slingsby's honest and candid account involves deep disappointment and harsh lessons at the 2008 Olympics, before moving on to detail the extraordinary lengths he went to, along with coach Micheal Blackburn to make sure he would prevail at the London Games of 2012.This is the first part of a fascinating two part interview, in which Slingsby gives the listener a sometimes intimate account of life as a successful twenty first century professional sailor. From the decision not to defend his Olympic title, Robertson and Slingsby move on to his America's Cup career, and the much discussed 2013 San Francisco Cup which saw Slingsby help Team Oracle USA to the remarkable, and much documented comeback against Emirates Team New Zealand.Regular podcast listeners will have heard the story from many of the key players from that 2013 Cup, but this telling is perhaps the most revealing. Slingsby's memories of the comeback are recalled from the perspective of the then rookie young America's Cup sailor somewhat overawed by his surroundings and the characters around him. His memories of the initial losses and the awkward meetings that followed are insightful and revealing, a must-listen to all fans of the modern Cup era - Part One ends as Slngsby begins in his role onboard Oracle Team USA, looking forward to the famous 2013 comeback in the Bay of San Francisco. From the America's Cup to Sail GP, the displacement Laser dinghy to the foiling Moth, Slingsby's talent has seen him become one of the most applauded sailors of his generation. Getting a glimpse inside the mind of the man that's created such success makes for a truly fascinating two part podcast and is a must listen for any modern day sailing fan. This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website - www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast.
