Embracing Identity and Purpose: Samantha Alvarez's Inspiring Tale

The Face of Latina Professionals

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2023 29:30

In a recent episode of 'The Face of Latina Professionals Podcast,' we had the pleasure of welcoming Samantha Alvarez, a vibrant voice resonating with the power of cultural identity and self-discovery. Samantha's journey isn't just a narrative; it's a beacon for anyone grappling with their identity and purpose.Born and raised in Chicago, Samantha proudly embraces her Puerto Rican and Honduran heritage. Her story unfolds like a vibrant tapestry, interweaving threads of culture, resilience, and aspiration. Growing up in Humboldt Park, she was deeply rooted in the Puerto Rican community, a cultural immersion that profoundly shaped her identity. Yet, it was her exploration of her Honduran roots in her teens that broadened her understanding of her multifaceted identity.Samantha's journey to Honduras at 17 was a pivotal moment. “It was so heartwarming just to meet Tias and Tios and see where my mom grew up,” she recalls. This trip was not just a physical journey but a profound dive into the depths of her heritage, enriching her sense of self.A crucial aspect of Samantha's story is her relationship with language. Despite growing up in a predominantly English-speaking environment, she mastered Spanish, thanks to her high school AP Spanish teacher. "She really just broke it down for me,” Samantha shares. Her trilingual proficiency in English, Spanish, and the unique colloquialisms of her cultures is more than linguistic ability; it's a bridge connecting her to her roots and to diverse communities.Samantha's professional journey is equally compelling. Her transition from a non-profit enthusiast to a CEO of a marketing company, Inspir8, highlights her adaptability and commitment to growth. Inspir8, born out of a profound moment of realization in Medellin, Colombia, symbolizes Samantha's dedication to empowering small businesses with her creative and business acumen. But her path wasn't devoid of challenges. Samantha's resilience in the face of domestic violence both at home and in intimate relationships is a testament to her strength. She turns her pain into purpose, channeling her experiences to empower other women. “It's my heart where I just really want to empower women that are in those situations,” she asserts, showcasing her unwavering commitment to uplift others. As Samantha shares her story, it's clear that her journey is more than a personal narrative; it's a roadmap for embracing one's heritage, facing challenges with resilience, and transforming pain into purpose. Her life is a lesson in finding one's niche, being true to oneself, and relentlessly pursuing one's passions.

The Meaning Movement: Helping You Find Your Calling, Create Your Life's Work, and Make Career Change

Samantha Alvarez spent the last 15 months in hospitals and ER's as a front line worker helping fight the COVID pandemic. We discussed that experience in length in the last episode of the show. Today, I get the chance to jump back in with her and explore the many facets of her work and life. In this conversation we explore Samantha's three tiered approach to work and projects and how she decides what to focus on at any given time. She works and lives in a multidisciplinary fashion — which is a lot of fun to explore. While this could be viewed as a "part 2", it very much stands on its own. If you'd like to tune into our last conversation, just go back an episode in the podcast feed and you should find it. In this episode you'll learn: What Samantha does The different manifestations of work in her life  How many language she speaks conversationally How to start learning other languages Her early career pursuits How a sales couch helps businesses How she overcame the negativity in sales Where the idea of sales being evil came from How to embrace the "screw up” How she moved through uncertainties in her life How to reinvent yourself without fear Overcoming the mountain that is keeping us stuck Show notes at: https://themeaningmovement.com/sam2

Samantha Alvarez has done a lot of different work over the course of her career. By her count, she's had 65 jobs. She also finds herself now pursuing two parallel tracks professional —nursing and sales — along with a few more passion projects that she takes very seriously. I intended to get into all of that. But this conversation went a surprising and unexpected direction. Samantha has spent the last 15 months on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, in hospitals and ER's around the united states. I couldn't pass up this opportunity to hear more about that experience, how she's processing it, and how she's moving from it. This conversation was so fun and unexpected. It definitely wasn't the conversation that I anticipated having, but it was such an exciting and relevant experience to explore that I couldn't help myself. We'll have Samantha on in our next episode to dig further into her work journey. In this episode you'll learn: What Samantha does The four pillars of her life How she earns a living How she's processing Covid trauma How mental health became her fuel in battling pandemic The experiences she witnessed in the field The stress and trauma a frontline worker experiences everyday How to recovery from the trauma of pandemic How to fight PTSD while working in the field How to manage being workaholic What is a "Mind Gap Exercise" Tips in managing panic attacks Show notes at: https://themeaningmovement.com/sam

How do you live your best life? According to Samantha Alvarez, it begins with having a crystal clear vision and a sense of adventure for learning new things and experiencing different cultures. Formerly a nurse practitioner, Samantha is now following her passion as a world traveler, digital nomad, online teacher, university faculty, sales consultant, polyglot, musician and mindful human being who is helping people learn languages and become their best self. She speaks eight languages - English, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Italian, and French – five of which she taught herself within the last 3 years while visiting 26 countries and living in 11 - on 5 continents. In our interview, Samantha shares traveling adventure stories, how she manages her business from anywhere, and her process for learning anything – whether it be a new language, skill, vocation or culture.   An avid relationship builder, she also describes the benefits of meeting new people from different cultures and how she has been able to go from being a nurse practitioner to an online teacher, sales consultant, and many other roles along the way.  Playful, intelligent, and entrepreneurial, Samantha shows us how easy and fun it is to be a lifestyle entrepreneur and enjoy a contented and satisfied life. Key Takeaways 1) Living better starts with a crystal clear vision of what you want. 2) Two key things required in learning anything new – it has to be relevant and emotional. 3) Give yourself a 2-3 week time frame for preparation and familiarization, and then just go for it. 4) In learning something new, do enough today that you're going to be excited to do it again tomorrow. 5) Life and learning hack – don't do anything until you absolutely have to.  Only then will you be ultra-focused and effective. She held 44 jobs by the time she was 23 years old, running the gamut from newspaper delivery to translation to insurance to IT professional. She managed to work as a Registered nurse for six years in a row at a dozen or so different positions, but still didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up. After dropping out of school several times, including once to attend medical school, she went on to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and practiced for 5 years in Tucson, Arizona. After burning out on healthcare, she took some time off to travel and learn languages, sating two of her greatest desires on this earth at the same time. She has since visited 26 countries, and lived in 9 of them on 3 continents. She has learned several new languages to conversational fluency, and how to say “hello” and “thank you” in a dozen or so more. She has experienced a tremendous amount of both fun and challenge. She has supported herself through several dozen wildly different online jobs these past few years, from teaching online to clinic stints, writing, bookkeeping, coaching, sales, and a university faculty appointment. She is also an avid singer, and will take even the smallest provocation to break out into song, much to the annoyance and/or delight of those around her. In her own words, “I do know what I want to be when I grow up: I want to be whoever I am when I arrive there, and enjoy the journey.” Connect With Samantha Alvarez Online www.samalvarez.com YouTube – Samantha Alvarez
