In an episode which features a turn of the tables, Nancy Sasaki interviews her co-host, the inimitable Jose Cruz, the CEO of the San Diego Council on Literacy, a model urban literacy coalition. He has 38 years of experience in the literacy field and is known for his accomplishments in supporting collaborative literacy efforts on national, statewide, regional, and local levels. He was the recipient of the 2003 San Diego Union-Tribune, “Educator of the Year” award. In 2014, he was recognized by The Union-Tribune as the Civic Leader of the Year through the Latino Champions Awards. In the following year, he was named to the San Diego High School, “Wall of Honor.” Cruz is also a past-president of the San Diego Lions Club. He is a native San Diegan, a graduate of the University of Southern California, and a proud product of the San Diego Community College District. Having developed an early passion for reading through sports books, Jose longs for the day when kids would line up for the book mobile! Until that day arrives, he is focised on resources for children, families, and adults by way of book distribution and support for the Council's 35 affiliated members. And, given the state of literacy, there is no rest for Jose and the team. Fortunately, Jose thinks there is a revolution taking place on all elements of the literacy challenge in America - from teacher training and family support to access to books and finances. Additionally, he taught English at San Lorenzo High School and San Diego High School, and was a Substitute Teacher for San Diego Unified, teaching every grade, K-12, at over 25 schools in the City of San Diego. He earned his BA in Sociology, and two MA's in Education at UC Berkeley, through the Multicultural Urban Secondary English (MUSE) Program, and the Principal Leadership Institute. Barton and Luke sit down to discuss how Luke learned to be a key asset to the Los Angeles Lakers during his nine years wearing the purple and gold. Before he retired, Luke was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers where he made his mark being a positive force on and off the court for their franchise.   Luke also recounts how his dad's two years with the Boston Celtics (85-87) helped shape his understanding of winning basketball.  Early Life: The son of Susie Walton (Guth) and former UCLA star and NBA Hall-of-Famer Bill Walton, Luke  was born in San Diego, California. He was named after his father's close friend and former teammate Maurice Lucas.  He has three brothers: Adam, Nathan, and Chris. Walton attended Univ. of San Diego High School,  graduating in 1998.College Career:Luke Walton played basketball at the Univ. of Arizona under coach Lute Olsen.  His best year statistically was as a junior, when he averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.6 blocks per game.  He played all four years and graduated with a degree in family studies and human development.  He was selected as a 2nd team all-American his senior year.  Los Angeles Lakers (2003–2012)Walton was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2003 NBA Draft with the second pick of the second round (32nd overall). Walton was a favorite of Lakers fans during his nine-year stint as a selfless, hard-working reserve player.In 2006-07,  Walton had his best year in the NBA. He scored a career-high 25 points against th Atlanta Hawks on December 8, 2006. For the season he posted career-high per-game averages in minutes, field goal percentage, steals, blocks, rebounds, assists and points as the Lakers starting small forward. Following the season, on July 12, 2007, Walton was signed by the Lakers to a 6-year, $30 million contract.Golden State Warriors (2014–2016) In 2014, Walton became an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors with Steve Kerr.  Said Walton, "We are gonna run parts of the triangle offense, and I know that thing front and back." The Warriors won the 2015 NBA Finals after they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games to give Walton his third NBA championship and first as an assistant coach.During  training camp in October 2015, Walton was appointed as the Warriors interim head coach when Steve Kerr took an indefinite leave of absence to rehabilitate his back that had been bothering him after the NBA Finals.  Walton made his coaching debut in the season opener on October 27 in a 111–95 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Three games later, he presided over the third-largest margin of victory in franchise history when the Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 119–69, which was also the largest margin in the league since 1991. The Warriors set a new NBA record by winning their first four games by a total margin of 100 points.  With a win over the Lakers on November 24, he guided the Warriors to a 16th consecutive victory to start the season, a new NBA record.Walton was named the NBA Western Conference Coach of the Month for games played in October and November, after guiding Golden State to a 19–0 start.  In 2016, Luke became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and would go on to coach LeBron James  in 2018-2019).  Luke Currently lives with his family in Sacramento, California. I've been seeing a lot of street vendors attacked lately. It's disgusting behavior that has made me wonder who could possibly harm these vendors. On Sunday June 27th, at 1pm there is the 1st annual vendor market going on at Mariachi plaza. A San Diego High School basketball coach has been fired after orchestrating a racist prank after a game against a predominately Latino team. Racism has advanced and become more difficult to uncover.  I also urge everyone to listen to my Sylvia Rivera episode with Sammy Nemir. I feel like we need to learn more BIPOC and LGBTQIA histories.  Britney Spears has been in a long standing conservatorship that she pushed back on this past Wednesday. New Mexico residents have unique perspectives about favorability and trust of public schools and educators. The 2020 Garrity Perception Survey reveals confidence in educators is strong, 69 percent of New Mexico residents trust teachers, ranking second out of fifteen professions. When the focus is on K-12 institutions, 41 percent of New Mexicans have a favorable impression of public schools; ranking fourteenth out of seventeen industries. I'm a native New Mexican. Dr. Sue Cleveland [00:01:00] I am a graduate of San Diego High School and went to you and them and then went to New Mexico State University, where my husband was getting an engineering degree. And then we left and went to Houston and were there for a good number of years. I was a teacher and administrator and one of the suburban districts in Houston. And then his work took us to the Carolinas. And I was an administrator and superintendent of a district outside of Charlotte. And I always wanted to come back homeless here. And my parents were here and we had a new baby. And so we made the trip back to New Mexico and this opportunity to work with the Rio Rancho School districts. It's just been a wonderful experience for me. I've just been so grateful to have had this opportunity. So that's kind of the pathway. I worked at all three levels. I worked at elementary, middle and high school. My primary background is, was high school, but. Can I have a pretty general background in education? Tom Garrity [00:02:08] Well, and you are the only superintendent that the Rio Rancho Public Schools has ever known. Dr. Sue Cleveland [00:02:15] I am the only one. I've been here quite a long time, and as I said, it's been a great experience. Tom Garrity [00:02:22] Well, the 2020 Perception Survey addresses trust of teachers and favorability of public schools. Let's talk about this, 69 percent of residents who have a very high level of trust in teachers. Your opinion, in your opinion, why are teachers the second most trusted profession in the state? Dr. Sue Cleveland [00:02:41] Well, I think number one was family and relatives. As I recall, and so it's it's wonderful to see teachers at the number two slot. The reason I think that occurs is that most parents make their children their number one priority. It's the most important thing in their lives. And so they pay a lot of attention to education and they want a good education for their children. Dr. Sue Cleveland [00:

She went to Saint John's Episcopal Elementary School and University of San Diego High School (now called Cathedral High School) in San Diego. Hanna is an American born Mexican-Kurd reality television personality, politician, philanthropist, conference speaker, human rights activist, and author. Her father's family name is Jaff. Which is Kurdish and belongs to the Jaff tribe, well-known for its political involvement in political Kurdish affairs since the year 1114. Hanna's father is a real estate developer, Board Member of North Bank Iraq (largest private bank in Iraq owned by the family), the son of Dawood Fattah Al Jaff (also remembered as Dawood Beg Jaff), the largest property owner in Kurdistan and leader of the Jaff tribe. She is a descendent of Mohamed Pasha Jaff, Lady Adela, Osman Pasha Jaff, and Mahmud Pasha Jaff. Sherwana Castle is their ancestral home. Her mother's paternal family name is Bosdet and mother's maternal family name is Gonzalez. The Bosdet, are originally from France, migrated first to Canada and then moved to Mexico in the 1800s. The Gonzalez, originally from Spain, migrated to Mexico in the 1800s. Hanna is the great granddaughter of Carlos Henry Bosdet, married to a woman from England, and remembered as the first person to install and introduce the telephone in Mexico. Hanna holds a Master's Degree in Arts, a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, and minors in Political Science and Criminal Justice. She studied at National University (California) in San Diego, Harvard University in Boston, Columbia University in New York, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, and La Sorbonne University of Paris. In March 2014, she was awarded an honorary doctorate degree for her humanitarian work by the Claustro Doctoral in Mexico. Since 2013, Hanna has been the Undersecretary of Relations with the Civil Society, the Undersecretary of Immigrants, the National Secretary of Social Management of Youth Network for Mexico, and the National General Secretary of the Revolutionary Youth Expression in the Institutional Revolutionary Party. She was a Federal Congresswoman candidate of the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico. Hanna is the founder of Jaff Foundation for Education, a nonprofit organization, created on June 4, 2013. The foundation has hosted more than 180 charity events worldwide, benefiting more than 120,000 people. Their mission is to teach English to immigrants, refugees, and the less fortunate, launch nondiscrimination campaigns, and aim their attention on world peace and education. Today, the foundation has more than 7,000 active volunteers. Hanna is an activist for immigrants and refugees, and she frequently volunteers in Iraqi refugee camps, where she teaches English and has donated thousands of her English learning books. In 2013, she organized the first Kurdish Festival in Mexico, the biggest one ever held outside Kurdistan, attended by 80,000 people in four days. Hanna organizes frequent non-discrimination campaigns for the world's peoples to respect one another's race, skin color, national origin, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, social class, political views, and age. Hanna conducted a We Are One Campaign in support of war victims in the Middle East. The author of poetry, short stories, young adult novels, and children’s literature, Herrera was awarded the National Book Critic’s Award in 2009. Herrera was born in 1948 in Fowler, California, as a son of migrant farmers, and grew up in the southern agricultural communities of the state. He graduated from San Diego High School in 1967 and earned a BA in social anthropology from UCLA, where he became involved in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. He went on to earn a master’s in social anthropology from Stanford University and an MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The author of many poetry collections and children’s books, Herrera is also a performance artist and activist for migrant and indigenous communities and at-risk youth. He has founded several performance groups and has taught poetry, art and performance in community galleries and correctional facilities. He was appointed California Poet Laureate in 2012 and the U.S. Poet Laureate in 2015, the first Chicano to hold the title. Herrera’s reading at Emory is part of the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library Reading Series, now in its twelfth season. Herrera is the sixth U.S. poet laureate to be featured in the series, and the 30th reader overall.

"If you don't care that San Diego High School is there, and you don't care about this broader principal about whether we should be able to change the charter to hand over parkland, then just vote for it," Lewis said. If Measure I is voted down, however, the school will have to move by 2024 and the land where the school sits now will return to Balboa Park. Meanwhile, Proposition 58, a statewide measure, focuses on bilingual education. If it passes, it'll restore flexibility to school districts so they can choose the most effective approach to teaching English-learners. Lewis and Kohn also discuss San Diego Unified trustee candidates for District E, LaShae Collins and incumbent Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, as they campaign to win over voters citywide.
