He is also 5 ½ years sober and so much of who he is and what he prioritized today comes from his sobriety and  being the best father he can be for his two teenage kids.  Behind his exterior of muscles and a big smile, Austin local David Garza is just as compassionate at heart as he lets on. As one of Austin's most motivated fitness instructors, Garza gladly admits to spending time surfing Pinterest for motivating quotes to share with others. Referred to as the “Tony Robbins of spin” by some of his clients, Garza cherishes being able to make others feel special, whether that's by playing someone's favorite song during a class or sitting down with someone for coffee to help them tackle the obstacles in their way to a healthier lifestyle. “I have been pretty blessed to have found this career, where I can use music and fitness and really talk in a deep way of how we are doing,” Garza says. “And, because I have gone through some ridiculously challenging things in my life, I am able to look at somebody and say ‘Hey man, I get it. Let's try and figure out what's going wrong, pinpoint it and see what we can do in a positive way to figure out what we need to get done to get you out of this funk.'”When Garza came out of college, his lifestyle included smoking and drinking, and at one point, he even weighed close to 300 pounds. Coming up on four years of being sober, Garza says he can consider his past experiences struggling with nutrition and unhealthy habits as a blessing, because they make it easy for him to be able to discuss topics that can typically be hard to talk about. “I get to share with a lot of people who are struggling, and I have been down that path, and I feel like I can truly relate to somebody struggling with lots of different things,” Garza says. “While I know there are a lot of challenges out there, I also know that you can overcome those challenges, because you want to be a little bit better than you were yesterday.”Garza is heading to Nice, France in September to compete in another Ironman Triathlon World Championships. To contact David, find him on Instagram @davidgarza1He is currently teaching classes at HIT Athletic in North Central AuUse this link to get a 30 minute discovery call scheduled with Barton if you're interested in his 12 week coaching course. https://calendly.com/bartbryan/30minFor more information about Iron Neck products and to receive a 15% discount on your order, use this link -> https://bit.ly/46ZmUhKTo get the Free weekly workout PDF, just email Barton: Barton@bartonguybryan.comTo hire Barton for a Speaking Event, Click here: https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fcalendly.com%2Fbartbryan%2F30-minute-meeting-clone&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AOvVaw2a_wCbF6yDMtR_5pNdIg4PBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Become a Patreon Sponsor of the podcast for extra cool stuff including a Free weekly workout program by clicking here - https://themindsetforge.supercast.com/v1?

How we can Dramatically Re-Imagine Athletic Performance with Lauren Ammon

Barton and Lauren sit down to discuss how an athlete's mindset is pivotal to long term success and wellbeing for the athlete and person striving to compete.  In this hour long interview, Barton and Lauren discuss how she realized there was such a need for a "Re-Imagined" Coaching concept to help these athletes stay healthy mentally, emotionally and physically while preparing for competition.  Follow Lauren on Instagram: https://instagram.com/mrslaurenammonCheck out her website: https://performancereimagined.comAbout Lauren: I started swimming when I was five because my mom says I had WAY too much energy and was asking for A LOT of snacks during my sisters' swim meets. Since I was already there she signed me up for the team and well, as ‘they' say, the rest is history. I LOVED everything about swimming. From the laughter with my teammates to the hard sets to dancing at swim meets like an absolute fool listening to CDs on a discman (yes, I'm THAT old). It was my world, and I never wanted to leave. For 17 years I had the privilege of calling myself an elite athlete, even making it to a D1 program on a full ride. While I was wildly successful by all counts - KY high school state champ, top 3 finisher in the Mid American Conference - there was a snag. I was a perfectionist whose expectations were so high, nothing less than PR was acceptable anytime I dove in the water. I didn't know how else to be. I was a driven go-getter who literally felt a constant pressure to perform at my peak every. single. time no matter if I was in the depths of hell with training or fully tapered. It was perfection or bust. It was PR or nothing. There was no middle ground. I didn't know how to get out of my own head! And while all of my coaches told me I was there (yes, thank you Captains Obvious) I was never told HOW to get out of it. Just to ‘figure it out'. I found my way out sometimes, but I always chalked it up to being a fluke. Not something I could consciously do if I worked at it. So alas, when I was finally forced to retire in 2004, I left thinking, '“ugghhhhhh I could have been so much more had I just figured out how to get out of my own head.” Fast forward to September 2021, the postponed 2020 Olympic Games. As I watched Simone Biles remove herself from competition and Katie Ledecky hide emotion after winning Gold but it not reflecting her best performance, I started to think about the mental well-being of athletes. Minutes later Michael Phelps said what I didn't know I had been thinking for over 30 years. “Competing [at this level] is really overwhelming. We just want someone to talk to. We just want someone who listens and allows us to be vulnerable and doesn't want to fix us.” BOOM! There it was. It finally all made sense. I could take the experiences from swimming and combine them with education and training I received after it to give athletes what I never got - the HOW behind getting out of your own head. And thus Performance Reimagined was born - to support elite student-athletes like you to train your minds like you train your bodies. Let's be 1% better each week by Forging a Powerful Athlete's MindsetBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Join the Mindset Forge Premium membership for $3 / month (Donor Level) or $150 / month for Coaching: https://themindsetforge.supercast.com

Clark and Barton sit down to talk swimming, preparation for big meets, how his parents influenced his success, and much more.  More on Clark SmithClark Smith is a 6'9″ freestyle and butterfly specialist and student-athlete at the University of Texas. Born April 17, 1995 in Atlanta, Ga., Smith had the ability to be a great swimmer within his genes – his parents, John and Tori, also swam for Texas and his mother was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team. Smith came within .04 seconds of breaking the National High School record in the 100 butterfly, an event he was on the USA Swimming Junior National Team for. University of Texas2013-2014In his freshman season Smith swam at the Big 12 Championships, placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, fourth in the 200-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly. The 500-yard free was Smith's first event at NCAA's, and he immediately made a statement. Smith qualified for the championship final first coming out of the preliminary heats. In the final, Smith took out the first 200 yards in 1:38.02, a quick 200-yard free time in itself, and he held on until Florida's Dan Wallace took over the lead at the 350-yard mark. But it was Smith's last 50 yards that pulled him away — he out-split Wallace 24.03 to 25.28 to win his first national championship.Smith then took on the 200-yard free — he qualified for the semi-final, and finished 11th overall just 0.41 seconds behind the heat's winer. On the same night Smith led off the 800-yard free relay for Texas that took 8th. For his final individual event of the meet Smith took on the 200-yard fly, an event that was largely expected to be won by Texas. Three Texas athletes qualified for the championship final in the 200-yard fly, including Smith. Texas went 1-2 in the event, but Smith unfortunately was disqualified for a one-hand touch in the championship final of the event.2015-2016At the Big 12 Championships Clark won the 1,650 in a new school and Big 12 record of 14:31.29. He also was a member of the Texas 800 yard freestyle relay that took gold and finished 4th in the 500 yard freestyle. At the NCAA meet, Clark didn't enjoy the same success as his sophomore year. As the defending champion and top seed in the 500 yard freestyle, Clark didn't manage to reach the finals, finishing 21st in the prelims. He was also the top seed in the mile but finished 12th in the prelims.2016 Rio Olympic GamesIn his first Olympic Games, Smith earned a gold medal for his heat swim in the 800 meter freestyle relay. He lead the team off with a 1:47.20 split. Smith, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Ryan Lotche combined in a time of 7:06.74 to put Team USA through to the final in second position.2017 World ChampionshipsOn day one Smith missed out on the 400 meter freestyle final after finishing 12th in 3:47.12. Two days later was back in action in the 800 meter freestyle where he finished 10th in the heats in 7:51.83. In his final swim, Smith won a bronze medal. It came in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay where Smith swam in the heats to put Team USA through to the final in 7th. Blake Pieroni, Townley Haas, Jack Conger and Zane Grothe combined in the final to finish third behind Great Britain and Russia.Check out more info about the Endure Tour coming to Austin, TX on March 29th: https://www.enduretour.comBarton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/Podcast Website is: https://www.podpage.com/the-mindset-forge-podcast/Join the Mindset Forge Premium membership for $3 / month (Donor Level) or $150 / month for Coaching: https://themindsetforge.supercast.com

Thanksgiving Throwback w/ Michael Griffin: The Mindset Needed to Become an NFL Athlete

Former NFL safety Michael Griffin sits down with Barton to  talk fatherhood, cupcakes, and his experience growing up playing High school, college, and pro football.  He takes the listener on his journey from Bowie High to the Univ. of Texas, and to the NFL.  In this episode, Michael explains why aspiring athletes must get up early, do the work in the gym, and be determined to be the best on their team.Mindset to Stay In the GameMuch of the attention is given to the physical aspect of football since it is a contact sport. However, Michael always thinks of his back against the wall, which is traced back to his high school days. He explains that when he is in that position, he can see the goal and how he can get to it. Michael then questions himself if his goal outweighs the barriers and everything else. He says that it is easy to make every excuse possible on why he could not do it. So what does this have to do with the physical aspect? Well, Michael has to know the difference between hurt and injured. An injury would mean not being able to play, and with that, it gives a window of opportunity to another player to take his spot. Therefore, Michael has developed a sense of durability with the mindset to push himself hard while securing his place in the team. Due to this way of thinking, he played with a dislocated shoulder twice. He learned to adapt quickly instead of getting off the field in order to keep his position as a safety of the team. About Michael Griffin:Two-time Pro-Bowler Michael Griffin's stellar professional football career spanned ten seasons in the NFL, including stints with the Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, and the Carolina Panthers. Since retiring in 2018, Griffin's focus has shifted to entrepreneurship, opening up a subsidiary bakery under the Gigi's Cupcakes franchise outside of his hometown of Austin, Texas, with his life-long friends, fellow NFL standout Brian Orakpo and college classmate Bryan Hynson.Griffin's magnetic dexterity has served him well throughout the years as a football player, entrepreneur, and most recently, the star of a hit Microsoft commercial with his friend and former Titan teammate Brian Orakpo. Griffin resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife Shantel and their children.Outline of the Episode:[01:47] Lessons from sports applied in raising three kids[07:54] Challenges that arise from communication outside the football field[11:10] Factors that made Michael go back to Austin to raise his family[19:21] Family dynamics: parenting strategies in creating a team within their children[21:52] Humility goes a long way, whether in sports or fatherhood[23:23] A competitive attitude made use in high school football[32:48] Michael's experience having a sports scholarship at the University of Texas[41:30] The magic behind the team's success, according to Michael[45:02] How Michael handled the physical aspects of football and kept himself primed to play[52:37] Football mindset used to put up the cupcake businessResources:IG:  @thecupcakeguys https://thecupcakeguys.comIG:  @Mikegriff33Michael Griffin's UT Highlight Reel: https://youtu.be/ynFNxQ3b5-U2006 Rose Bowl Highlights: https://youtu.be/4lca15NWEUkConnect with Barton!
