This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Kim Smith. Kimberley Bodenhamer Smith's Facebook Bio says: “Texan born in California and residing in Tennessee: Mudder, Author, unicyclist, Caver, Transhumanist, and an Episcopalian.” Many other labels and clubs could be added to the vast interests of this American TAG Caver. Kim, as she prefers to be called by friends and family (or Kimmie with an IE) is a typical Alpha female caver. "She states you either love me or hate me. I have a polarizing personality. Kim bought Chilliheads a fleece product company, from Darrell and Susan Bryant in the winter of 2010. The company started on Signal Mountain, TN in 1991. Chilliheads was one of the first fleece hat and liner companies in the southwest and serviced mountaineers, rock climbers, skiers, kayakers and cavers just to name a few markets. This was a “golden ticket” into the caving community that is notoriously a very closed community for a number of very legitimate reasons which we discuss. Kim states; there are only 15,000 active NSS Cavers in the US. Kimberley put the pleasure and service of the sport before her business, and became the secretary of Chattanooga Grotto and sat on the executive committee for three years. Finishing out her Geo-political contribution to the National Speleological Society, as the chairwoman of CG in 2014. The Chattanooga grotto is an elite group of big-name Cavers and has been in existence for over 50+years. Kim has also been a member of the Sewanee Mountain Grotto. Her cave mentors have been the late Moore J. Smith of Lookout Mountain, Page Ashwell of the TAG Grotto, Kelly Smallwood of the G-Spot Grotto, and the late Steve Hudson of PMI ropes. Her love of adventure began by running away from ski school on Mammoth Mountain at five in 1981—to white water rafting the Zambezi river in August 1999, right after South Africa's apartheid. She also built a cabin off grid at 10,000 feet in Park County Colorado, in South Park Ranches, during her early 20s. She is an avid skier/snowboarder. The snowboarder was retired in 2006 after having a level three spinal fusion at C-three, four and five. Kim's NSS number is RL63293. She's waiting on that 15 year pin—it's a year or two off from showing up in the mail. Kim is fiercely loyal and loving. Kim is proudest accomplishment in life is her son Bo, 19 and Burke who is a senior and 18. She believes deeply in manifestation and synchronicity. Thanks for listening! Have you ever wanted to do things differently? To not follow the rule book of life, but instead, be free to lead your life and your business or career in a way that works for you? I know many of us have this dream. We want to have it all: the successful business, the amazing family, the happy marriage, the perfect social life, etc… And I'm here to tell you that you can have it all. And you can be free. You don't have to stick to the book or live your life by the set of rules society pushes on you. You can make your own rules, and you can achieve success and joy and happiness doing so. Don't believe me? Well, lucky for you, I've invited someone who'll help you leave your skepticism where it belongs; in the past. Her name is Jessica Caver Lindholm and she is one of my favorite people in the world. It's funny though...when I first met Jess, she triggered me. She was so FREE. She was on her own schedule, didn't care what people thought of her, charged what she wanted to charge, and frankly, I wanted what she had! Once I got over my issues, we became close friends and she's supported me through so many ups and downs. Jessica is a business owner who lives her life and manages her business the way she wants to. She never stuck to a schedule, she never followed the book, and she definitely never stuck to a plan. She's the queen of freedom, and, you know what? That's been working for her! Listen in as she and I talk about freedom, how to attract what you want, how she made it to where she is today, the importance of feeling free, and more. If you're craving that sense of freedom in your life but don't know how to achieve it, then this episode is for you! Are you ready? Let's dive in! In This Episode: [00:00] Introduction [02:15] Jessica takes us back to the past [09:07] How a step-by-step process can help you achieve freedom, from a certified rebel's perspective [14:39] Jessica shares the shift in mindset that helped her make five figures a month [17:48] If I were wealthy, how would I actually feel at this moment? [26:38] Jessica talks about how she gave herself permission to be free in her business [37:37] Let's talk about pivots! [43:34] Jessica's evolution in the last few years Quotes: “I always felt like a weirdo and a rebel and an outsider. And as I grew up and went to school, I just never felt like a traditional job made sense to me. I knew I could do it. I knew I could master it. But anytime that I would work for someone else, I just had this feeling of ‘I can be doing this better. I should run the company, not be working for you in the company.' And that just kept happening.” – Jessica Caver Lindholm “I think that [spiritual side] always just lived under the surface for me, even though I was this high achiever, background in science, all of that… I still had this love of the spiritual side.” – Jessica Caver Lindholm “I think the mentors, the coaching, the programs that I was really drawn to in the beginning were those that really highlighted the lifestyle […] And so the program that we ended up being in together, what really drew me to it was not that it was gonna give me a step-by-step process to build the business. It was the feeling of it, it was the luxury, it was the idea, I was drawn so much to the idea of getting to travel the world with other women and have these luxury experiences.” – Jessica Caver Lindholm “I remember reading The Science of Getting Rich at least six times in 2014 and just realizing all the ways that I was embodying broke, embodying not enough, and all of that fear. And I became really masterful at holding the energy and the frequency of wealth and knowing and feeling free around money, even though I didn't have money. And so that was one of the first things that I ended up teaching, how to feel financially free even when there's nothing there to support it.” – Jessica Caver Lindholm “I think that our imagination and our curiosity are some of our greatest tools. And what we don't realize is, we're always in alignment for something. We're in alignment for something whether we're being intentional about it or not. And when I say alignment, it's when your thoughts, your feelings, your emotions, and your actions are all pointing towards a specific outcome.” – Jessica Caver Lindholm Links & Resources: Ready to Uplevel Your Life? Earl Suitor, formerly a firefighter & EMT, is an avid caver & the current Eastern Region National Cave Rescue Commission Deputy Resource Section Chief in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. We begin with why Appalachia's geology makes for good caving, then ruminate on the inherent mystery of caves, hear about the historical mining of bat guano, learn about fossils & ancient cat scratches, & the reasons behind secrecy in the caving community. In story form, Earl describes how a cave rescue plays out with examples from finding a lost couple in West Virginia to a shocking tragedy in Utah & the famous cave flood in Thailand. Earl then shares harrowing lessons learned from his firefighting & EMT days, opening profound conversations about "burn out," dying, & his interest in world religions. If you'd like to go caving & learn more, reach out to your regional caving club [grotto] through Caves.org. Today's podcast: Next premier of Alberta???? Jason Kenney, the outgoing premier said on Corus radio in AB that Danielle Smith's Sovereignty Act would make Alberta a 'laughingstock.' How does the perceived front-runner to replace Kenney respond to his critique and critiques offered by others in federal and Alberta provincial politics? Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe told us weeks ago his province will do what it considers best for Saskatchewan and not blindly follow edicts from the Ottawa "caretaker" government. Danielle Smith. Political parties and leaders at each others throats heading for mid-term elections. Are Americans turning on each other? When you're inside a cave, there's a chance you will see something that no one else has ever seen. Cavers look for darkness beyond void – nothingness. In a fascinating recent episode of our Explorers podcast, Chris Nicola revealed an incredible story. It's his recounting of how one cave exploration in Western Ukraine led to the journey he'll never forget. Our host, Richard Wiese, spoke with Chris during the podcast about this story's pursuit and the challenges he overcame to tell it. It is the story of how 38 Ukrainian Jews beat the odds and survived for 511 days underground in a cave during World War II. Chris spent his earliest years in Northwest Massachusetts, where he loved being outdoors. When his family relocated to New York City, he would create “caves” with a blanket over the dining room table. Richard reminds us that cavers are a different breed. Chris says that as an adult, caving became second nature to him. Where most people would find it claustrophobic, he came to feel that caves started fitting him “like a glove.” Ever the explorer, Chris maintained his passion for caving even after a heart attack in 1993. That same year, he made the acquaintance of a Ukrainian caver he met on Coney Island. When he visited his friend and explored the caves in Western Ukraine, he studied a cave called “Priest's Grotto.” It was there he began to find household artifacts that were obviously decades old and sparked his curiosity. When he started to ask around about the origin of these finds, nobody wanted to discuss the possibilities. Finally learning from an older woman that there were Jews who lived in the cave during World War II. During this time, a Ukrainian Jew had a 5% chance of surviving the war. Although he remained dedicated to his quest for information, it wasn't until 2002 when he had a breakthrough. He received an email that began uncovering the truth about the survivors who lived in the cave for nearly a year and a half. Chris did not have the families' cooperation when he began putting together the book and documentary film detailing the ordeal the families went through at that time. Through patience and perseverance, he eventually got the story out. In the process, he gained the love and trust of a family through this story of triumph. To learn more about explorer Chris Nicola and his adventures as a caver and explorer, visit his website. The dedication to his book The Secret of Priest's Grotto is to the Human Spirit – It's Strength and It's Endurance. Watch the documentary film for an in-depth study of this exploration. To hear about other explorers, join us for new episodes of Life's Tough: Explorers are TOUGHER! At https://www.lifestough.com/podcast/explorers/. Richard Wiese, the host of this podcast, is an American explorer. He is the author of the guidebook, Born to Explore: How to Be a Backyard Adventurer. He became the youngest person to become president of the Explorers Club in 2002. Richard is also Executive Producer and Host of the PBS weekly television series Born to Explore with Richard Wiese.
