Sandy Phillips Kirkham shares her harrowing yet inspiring journey of overcoming abuse in a religious setting. Her book, "Let Me Prey Upon You: Breaking Free From A Minister's Sexual Abuse," sheds light on the devastating impact of clergy abuse and serves as a resource for education and support for others. Sandy's journey is a poignant testament to the often-downplayed reality that women and girls within the church can be easy prey for sexual predators disguised as priests. Her compelling story highlights the egregious abuse of power by church leaders and the victim-blaming that often follows. Sandy recounts her personal experience of being groomed, manipulated, and sexually exploited by her youth pastor and eventually being expelled from her church while her abuser moved on to another congregation. For years, Sandy grappled with the thought that the exploitation she endured was her fault. However, through tremendous personal growth and reflection, she came to recognize that she was deliberately targeted, groomed, and manipulated by her abuser, who sought only to use and control her. Sandy's experience underscores the critical need for awareness and support for all victims of abuse, challenging the stigmatization and silence that often surrounds clergy abuse.
This is her bio: "A church is where an insecure sixteen-year-old girl should feel welcome, happy, and most importantly, safe. Tragically for some, the church can become a place of great harm. Sandy Phillips Kirkham details her account of how a charismatic youth minister preyed upon her, a betrayal which left her broken, with a shattered faith, and the ultimate shame of being blamed and forced from the church she loved. From their very first meeting, the new youth minister slowly and methodically turned the sacred relationship of a trusted spiritual leader to one of abuse: sexual, emotional, and physical. When his actions were discovered, he was simply moved to another church, leaving Sandy to pay for his deeds. She was not his first victim, nor would she be his last. Despite a successful and happy life as a wife, mother, and friend, Sandy successfully concealed her abuse for twenty-seven years until a trigger forced her to face the truth. Sandy's story will take you on her journey of healing which began in 2004, first by seeking justice and closure from both the pastor and the church. Her strength and courage will inspire you. Let Me Prey Upon You details Sandy's journey from innocent sixteen-year-old victim to survivor and advocate." -Let Me Prey Upon You - Sandy Phillips Kirkham, Author. From Darkness to Healing with Sandy Phillips Kirkham Survivor, advocate, and author of “Let Me Prey Upon You,” Sandy Phillips Kirkham, works with survivors all around the world conducting victim support conferences and is a guest presenter/speaker at major events on clergy abuse, including the Hope & Healing Conference, sharing her perspective from the non-Catholic point of view. Her story is one of overcoming significant trauma to find hope and healing. At 16, Sandy suffered the ultimate betrayal when her charismatic youth pastor slowly and methodically turned a sacred relationship into one of abuse: sexual, emotional, and physical. The abuse would continue for the next five years until he was discovered and moved to another church. Left feeling broken, betrayed, and shattered, Sandy will go on to find herself the one being blamed and forced from the church she loved. But, unfortunately, she would also later discover that she was not his first or last victim. Despite having a successful and happy life as a wife, mother, and friend for 27 years, Sandy concealed her abuse until a trigger forced her to face the truth and overcome the trauma she went through as a young girl. Now the wife, mother, and grandmother continue to use her voice to help other clergy abuse victims be heard and heal from their trauma. She currently serves on the board of the Council Against Child Abuse. In addition, she has spoken before the Ohio Senate and a Maryland court and appeared on a local television show in Boston. Listen in as Sandy and I discuss the abuse she went through, the aftermath of such trauma, and how she overcame it all to heal and find a life of FEARLESS HAPPYNESS!
In this deeply moving episode of Warriors Unmasked, we sit down with Sandy Phillips Kirkham, a wife, mother, and grandmother who has triumphed over trauma. Sandy bravely shares her journey, from growing up in a divorced family to finding solace in the church and her relationship with God, only to experience abuse by her youth pastor. This conversation takes listeners from sorrow and sadness to compassion, understanding, and empowerment as we explore Sandy's lifelong journey of healing and forgiveness. Sandy's story is one of hope and overcoming trauma. At 16, she was sexually abused by her youth pastor, an abuse that continued for five years until his actions were discovered. She wasn't his first victim, nor his last. After being told to leave the church due to her "behavior," Sandy hid her past from her husband, family, and friends for 27 years. A triggering event eventually forced her to confront her abuse, hiring a private investigator to locate her abuser and confront him. Sandy's journey isn't just about the abuse she endured, but also about how she overcame the trauma, learned to forgive, and reclaimed her life. Sandy speaks candidly The pastor began grooming Sandy for abuse, starting with seemingly innocent gestures and escalating to sexual contact. He manipulated her guilt and devotion to the church, convincing her that their relationship was sanctioned by God. Trapped by his control and fearful of not being believed, Sandy suffered in silence for years. Despite the damage done to her spiritual life and relationship with the church, Sandy has managed to find healing and forgiveness. She admits to still feeling uncomfortable in church at times but has learned to accept and understand her triggers. Through her healing journey, Sandy has become an advocate for victims of clergy abuse, serving on the board of the Council on Child Abuse and volunteering for The Hope of Survivor's Ministry. She has even spoken before the Ohio Senate! Sandy Phillips Kirkham's story is a testament to the power of resilience, healing, and forgiveness. After five years of grooming, gaslighting, and emotional abuse, she was able to walk away, but to never speak of it for twenty-seven years. Sandy is now the author of "Let Me Prey Upon You" which details the five-year relationship, how she suppressed it for so many years, the toll it took on her and her recovery journey. Sandy Phillips Kirkham is a survivor of clergy abuse. He was 30 married, with two children, and at the age of 16, her youth pastor. The abuse lasted for five years. For 27 years she remained silent living with guilt and shame. A trigger forced her to face her past. That is when the healing began. Part of that healing meant facing her abuser after 27 years. Hiring a private detective she found him still ministering in a church in Alabama. Her journey was not an easy one but she is now a survivor and an advocate for other victims. She shares a message of prevention by helping people to understand the mind of a predator and the tools used to groom, manipulate and gaslight their victims and provides a greater understanding of the dynamics of abuse and the damage done when one suffers at the hands of a so-called clergy. Sandy Phillips Kirkham was just a teenager who loved church. It was a place she felt accepted and celebrated. When a new youth pastor was hired, he saw Sandy's love for the church and used it against her. He started grooming her for a long-term abusive relationship before her sixteenth birthday. When the abuse was finally discovered, the church moved the pastor on to another congregation (after celebrating him with a big going away party) and they asked Sandy to worship elsewhere. Sandy's story teaches us church is a place where victims are susceptible to predators because the institution is set-up for inherent trust—something predators know well.Full transcript and show notes here: https://bit.ly/dospod105Voicemail & text: (850) 270-3308Sandy Phillips Kirkham: https://sandyphillipskirkham.com/Stephanie Kostopoulos : https://www.stephaniekostopoulos.com/Beth Demme: http://bethdemme.com/Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dospod)
There are incidents of abuse that, as a society, we have become desensitized to because we have become numb to some particular acts of violence. We have heard so many tramatic events until nothing shocks us anymore but there are instances of, not the act, but the role of the perpretrator that now gives us uncertain feelings about whom we can trust. Someone in political office, school system, and the church should be regarded more stearnly when they cross the line from protector to perpetrator; but that is not always the case. This week, Latonia and her guest Sandy Phillips Kirkham discuss such an instance of a perpertrator being someone in high regard and what happened to Sandy's life in the aftermath of her traumatic ordeal as they discuss, "Let Me Prey Upon You!" --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/a-womans-soul-restored/message
Today we're with Sandy Phillips Kirkham, who when she was 17 years old, was raped by her pastor, a young, married man who callously took advantage of her admiration of him, and desire for his attention. His name was Jeff Coulier. The first time took place in the pastor's house, in his bed, and that is how she lost her virginity. She had given this “man of God” her trust and he violated that trust, just as he violated her. And he was worried about washing the bloody sheets before his wife came home. That was just the beginning of Sandy's trauma of betrayal. After many years, Sandy decided it was time to confront that past if she was to heal. She writes, “With the healing came my need and passion to speak out about clergy abuse.” She works with The Hope of Survivors ministry and is on the board of the Council on Child Abuse. She's spoken to many groups and churches on the topic of prevention and has met several courageous survivors. And so, she wrote a wonderful, riveting book in which she tells her story. It's a story of lies, manipulation, coercion, and abuse, but it's also a story of courage, resilience, and bravery. It's one of the darkest secrets out there. I'm talking about physical and sexual abuse upon us as men. Not only do many men experience this in silence, even the topic at large is uncomfortable to discuss, isn't it? Well, whether you have a dark secret of your own or simply wish to be a source of strength and encouragement for a fellow brother who does, this episode is for you--and it's one of the most important ones I've ever produced. This IS a thing, and it's actually happening far more than you've ever thought. Yet, men feel so much shame when victimized that incidents, or even continuous abuse, goes vastly underreported. My guest is Sandy Phillips Kirkham, who is a long-time victim advocate and the author of the ambiguously titled Let Me Pray/Prey Upon You. Now, despite the title of her book, Sandy isn't about anti-faith clergy bashing. Both she and I actually have stories, and have seen similar patterns among assailants. What are those patterns, and what are the insidious ways predators 'groom' their potential victims? When does normal affection and/or discipline cross the line of being abusive? How come predators are simply covered for or moved elsewhere rather than being prosecuted? Why haven't the Jeffrey Epstein story and others like it fueled the level of outrage they should have? What's up with female teachers who have sex with their students? And yes, we as men often encounter women who are abuse survivors themselves. What if we and/or someone we are dating is a sexual assault survivor...how can we have a healthy long-term sexual relationship? And for sure, how we can encourage women in our lives who have experienced assault to either report and/or in their recovery? Expect a well-rounded discussion that delivers straight talk about the topic. Jimmy Hinton We continue our conversation with Pastor Jimmy Hinton this week, who had to turn his own father in to the police for pedophilia. Find out the sequence of events after Jimmy's father is arrested and placed in prison with a life sentence. Jimmy describes how pedophiles think and how they abuse and manipulate their victims even from prison. He defines the difference between grooming and testing. We find out why Jimmy calls sexual predators "wolves that will never become sheep". Jimmy talks very bluntly how we can protect our churches and children from predators, which does not include inviting convicted predators back into the church. We finish the conversation with the real requirements for forgiveness, according to Jesus. Do not miss part two of this interview! Season 2 - Episode 14 A church is where an insecure sixteen-year-old girl should feel welcome, happy, and most importantly, safe. Let Me Prey Upon You details Sandy's journey from innocent sixteen-year-old victim to survivor and advocate.
