Three and a half decades later, they're still doing the same thing but on a slightly bigger scale. Since 1989, Max's (their company) has become one of the most successful and well-respected supplement companies in the world. This was a fun chat with two old friends. For Sandy Phillips Kirkham, what was a place of warmth became a place of intense trauma when she was 16 years old.In this episode, she sits down with Irene Weinberg to talk about her award-winning book, Let Me Prey Upon You, in which she details how a charismatic youth mister preyed upon her, betrayed her, left her broken with a shattered faith, and brought about the ultimate shame of being blamed and forced from the church she loved. Sandy also describes her healing journey that began when she confronted the minister during her quest for justice and closure 27 years after his heinous behavior began. Now an advocate for other victims of clergy sexual abuse and child abuse, Sandy's riveting, important story about dreadful clergy abuse is more than a story of intense trauma; it is an important story about healing and rebirth. A lot of us feel like we don't deserve to have our dreams come true or have good things happen to us, and sometimes, no matter how far we've made it or how much we've already accomplished, we still don't feel content. Why is that? The answer isn't an easy one. Most likely, it's when we grapple with feelings of self-loathing or self-hatred. Self-loathing is defined as a hatred for oneself that often manifests as anger, self-sabotage, a negative view of oneself, and low self-esteem. From Darkness to Healing with Sandy Phillips Kirkham Survivor, advocate, and author of “Let Me Prey Upon You,” Sandy Phillips Kirkham, works with survivors all around the world conducting victim support conferences and is a guest presenter/speaker at major events on clergy abuse, including the Hope & Healing Conference, sharing her perspective from the non-Catholic point of view. Her story is one of overcoming significant trauma to find hope and healing. At 16, Sandy suffered the ultimate betrayal when her charismatic youth pastor slowly and methodically turned a sacred relationship into one of abuse: sexual, emotional, and physical. The abuse would continue for the next five years until he was discovered and moved to another church. Left feeling broken, betrayed, and shattered, Sandy will go on to find herself the one being blamed and forced from the church she loved. But, unfortunately, she would also later discover that she was not his first or last victim. Despite having a successful and happy life as a wife, mother, and friend for 27 years, Sandy concealed her abuse until a trigger forced her to face the truth and overcome the trauma she went through as a young girl. Now the wife, mother, and grandmother continue to use her voice to help other clergy abuse victims be heard and heal from their trauma. She currently serves on the board of the Council Against Child Abuse. In addition, she has spoken before the Ohio Senate and a Maryland court and appeared on a local television show in Boston. Listen in as Sandy and I discuss the abuse she went through, the aftermath of such trauma, and how she overcame it all to heal and find a life of FEARLESS HAPPYNESS!
In this deeply moving episode of Warriors Unmasked, we sit down with Sandy Phillips Kirkham, a wife, mother, and grandmother who has triumphed over trauma. Sandy bravely shares her journey, from growing up in a divorced family to finding solace in the church and her relationship with God, only to experience abuse by her youth pastor. This conversation takes listeners from sorrow and sadness to compassion, understanding, and empowerment as we explore Sandy's lifelong journey of healing and forgiveness. Sandy's story is one of hope and overcoming trauma. At 16, she was sexually abused by her youth pastor, an abuse that continued for five years until his actions were discovered. She wasn't his first victim, nor his last. After being told to leave the church due to her "behavior," Sandy hid her past from her husband, family, and friends for 27 years. A triggering event eventually forced her to confront her abuse, hiring a private investigator to locate her abuser and confront him. Sandy's journey isn't just about the abuse she endured, but also about how she overcame the trauma, learned to forgive, and reclaimed her life. Sandy speaks candidly The pastor began grooming Sandy for abuse, starting with seemingly innocent gestures and escalating to sexual contact. He manipulated her guilt and devotion to the church, convincing her that their relationship was sanctioned by God. Trapped by his control and fearful of not being believed, Sandy suffered in silence for years. Despite the damage done to her spiritual life and relationship with the church, Sandy has managed to find healing and forgiveness. She admits to still feeling uncomfortable in church at times but has learned to accept and understand her triggers. Through her healing journey, Sandy has become an advocate for victims of clergy abuse, serving on the board of the Council on Child Abuse and volunteering for The Hope of Survivor's Ministry. She has even spoken before the Ohio Senate! Sandy Phillips Kirkham's story is a testament to the power of resilience, healing, and forgiveness. Her experiences offer invaluable insight and encouragement to others who may be struggling with similar traumas. Hit play to hear more!
