Lost in Nepal: The Power of Tenacity with Keith Rennison

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2022 43:58

Keith is a Colorado native and loves the mountains there. He spent 40+ years as an insurance agent and certified financial planner. Keith spent two years in the Army with a tour in the Vietnam War. That experience taught him to never waste time, it's too precious, and to that end, he has lived an interesting life racing cars and bicycles, skiing, foreign travel, and climbing many of Colorado's famous Fourteener's. It was that love of hiking and climbing that lead Keith to Nepal twice in the 1990s. His new award-winning book “Tenacity: You Don't Have to Get Lost in Nepal to Find Yourself, But it Helps!” is based on the second trip when he traveled alone and got lost for a few days in the Himalayas. He started racing bicycles at 54 and became the President of the Colorado Bicycle Racing Association for Seniors (COBRAS) in 2011. Keith gained international acclaim with his 2004 article “Compassion at Death's Door” in The American Legion magazine. His other books include: “The Pain and Joy of Love, A Collection of Black & White Photography, Short Stories, and Poetry”, the illustrated children's book on grieving “Zooch the Pooch, My Best Friend” co-authored with friend Michael Kelley, and three Zooch audiobooks. Looking to expand his horizons after retirement Keith joined a local Toastmasters club and learned public speaking. In 2016, Keith joined the National Speakers Association (NSA) Colorado Chapter and won the Member of the Year in 2017. He now sits on the Board of NSA-Colorado as the Secretary/VP of Operations. http://www.keithrenninson.com  https://www.facebook.com/thetenacityexpert  https://www.instagram.com/keithrenninson/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/keithrenninson/ YouTube: https://bit.ly/3esNVBr  _______________________________________________________________ Listen to more episodes at https://ResilientLifeHacks.com  MY BOOKS: Undefeated: From Trial to Triumph, How to Stop Fighting the Wrong Battles and Start Living Victoriously https://www.amazon.com/Undefeated-Trial-Triumph-Stand-Strong/dp/1640850872   Undaunted in Darkness: Finding Your Path From Broken to Bold, Your Daily Battle Plan for a Winning Life https://www.amazon.com/Undaunted-Darkness-Finding-Broken-Strong/dp/B09MYR8TH9/ Get my TOP 20 RESILIENT LIFE HACKS here! https://elizabeth-meyers.ck.page/1a1ef0ef89 Join our RESILIENT LIFE TRIBE: https://facebook.com/groups/resilientlifetribe

The Real and Often Overlooked Danger of Clergy Abuse with Sandy Kirkham

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2022 35:16

A church is where an insecure sixteen-year-old girl should feel welcome, happy, and most importantly, safe. Tragically for some, the church can become a place of great harm. In her book, Let Me Prey Upon You, Sandy Phillips Kirkham details her account of how a charismatic youth minister preyed upon her, a betrayal which left her broken, with a shattered faith, and the ultimate shame of being blamed and forced from the church she loved. From their very first meeting, the new youth minister slowly and methodically turned the sacred relationship of a trusted spiritual leader to one of abuse: sexual, emotional, and physical. When his actions were discovered, he was simply moved to another church, leaving Sandy to pay for his deeds. She was not his first victim, nor would she be his last. Despite a successful and happy life as a wife, mother, and friend, Sandy successfully concealed her abuse for twenty-seven years until a trigger forced her to face the truth. Sandy's story will take you on her journey of healing which began in 2004, first by seeking justice and closure from both the pastor and the church. Her strength and courage will inspire you. Let Me Prey Upon You details Sandy's journey from innocent sixteen-year-old victim to survivor and advocate. Sandy Kirkham and her husband Bill enjoy life with their two grown children, two beautiful granddaughters, and two fairly well-behaved dogs. Sandy continues to use her voice to help victims of clergy abuse. She currently serves on the board of Council Against Child Abuse. Sandy has spoken before the Ohio Senate, a Maryland court, and appeared on a local television show in Boston. Her story, “Stolen Innocence,” was told in a documentary produced by The Hope of Survivors. Sandy works with survivors conducting victim support conferences. She has participated in The Voice of the Faithful (VOTF) panels moderated by SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests), sharing her perspective from the non-Catholic point of view. Sandy has been a presenter/speaker at major events on clergy abuse including the Hope & Healing Conference. https://sandyphillipskirkham.com/  https://www.facebook.com/KirkhamAuthor/  _______________________________________________________________ Listen to more episodes at https://ResilientLifeHacks.com  MY BOOKS: Undefeated: From Trial to Triumph, How to Stop Fighting the Wrong Battles and Start Living Victoriously https://www.amazon.com/Undefeated-Trial-Triumph-Stand-Strong/dp/1640850872   Undaunted in Darkness: Finding Your Path From Broken to Bold, Your Daily Battle Plan for a Winning Life https://www.amazon.com/Undaunted-Darkness-Finding-Broken-Strong/dp/B09MYR8TH9/ Get my TOP 20 RESILIENT LIFE HACKS here! https://elizabeth-meyers.ck.page/1a1ef0ef89 Join our RESILIENT LIFE TRIBE: https://facebook.com/groups/resilientlifetribe

When I was 14 and I heard a whisper in my spirit tell me that I would write a book, I had no idea it would be a book based on my mistakes and the journey through fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. I heard the call a second time in my late twenties while suffering as a heartbroken addict. I was shouting to God for help and the Spirit of Love almost audibly stated, “You will recover, and you will write a book about your journey through hell to home.” “Yeah, right,” was my response. I swore I would never tell anyone about the degree to which I failed – repeatedly. Perseverance in Overcoming Obstacles with James Perdue

Podcast Episode with James Perdue, the Professor of Perseverance When life is difficult and painful, it's tempting to throw in the towel and just quit trying. However, the sweetest rewards come when we persevere in spite of our obstacles. James has such an inspiring story of not giving up, even when doctors said he would never walk again and should move into a nursing home at age 19. A bleak diagnosis wasn't enough to stop James, who is now known as the Professor of Perseverance. Not only did he walk again, he also earned his doctorate after having to drop out of college, and coached basketball even though he had been a football player. We can all learn from his loving approach to mentoring challenging teens. If you're in a difficult season and considering giving up, be encouraged by James' example. James has survived three suicide attempts, so he knows what it's like to hit rock bottom. He is not a superhuman. He is a regular guy who refuses to quit and is making a tremendous impact on those who see and follow his example. About James Dr. James Perdue, Professor of Perseverance, is the author of several books and the host of the Professor of Perseverance Podcast. On September 11, 1983, James became a quadriplegic, dislocating three vertebrae in his neck, from playing a football game. The doctor said, “James, I'm sorry. You'll never walk again and you might be paralyzed from your neck down.” Later, the doctor advised his family to place him in a nursing home; he would be too much of a burden for them to take care. Dr. James Perdue, Professor of Perseverance, worked hard to achieve success as a teacher and coach. He has been awarded  Fox 17 Top Teacher of the Week 2005, Teacher of the Year 2002, as well as, Coach of the Year 2006 and 2000. He received the Jo Andrews Award 1995 and the Hal Ramer Award 1991 both for overcoming adversity.  He received his doctorate degree, in May 2011, from Tennessee State University.  His demonstration of not giving up and striving through major challenges is apparent. The Professor of Perseverance knows he can help others pass through to the other side of tragedies to triumph and become survivors of difficulties. The Other Side of Perfect The Mind-Body Connection to Healing Chronic Illness with Debbie Emmick The Other Side of Perfect is a brutally honest and revealing peek into the life of a woman whose multiple diagnoses and bleak prognosis would be the surprising source of her ultimate liberation. After trying everything she knew to recover from the physical damage of autoimmune diseases–medication, nutrition, fitness, reducing stress–Debbie found her health continuing to deteriorate and in the deepest depths of depression she'd ever experienced. In her desperate attempt to claw her way out of hopelessness, this people-pleasing perfectionist stumbled upon her greatest source of self-healing yet–resurrecting the past to heal the future. She'll lead you through how following her intuition allowed her to finally process the repressed trauma of her childhood, ultimately healing her mind and body at once. Her story will show you that it was only through stripping away all the protections she surrounded herself in, to expose her most authentic, vulnerable self, that she was able to move beyond superficial health and toward something more meaningful and sustainable. Debbie takes us along with her in her own self-discovery that her adversity was her greatest gift, pointing the way to her freedom all along. The game-changing factor to overcoming challenges, persevering through trials, and living with purpose and significance is prayer. Jesus tells us, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5). We stay connected to God through daily, consistent, heartfelt prayer. But carrying on a conversation with a God we cannot see, hear, or touch can be difficult for us. Join me as I walk you step-by-step how to pray in a deep and meaningful way. Powerful prayer is not about saying the right words, it's about sharing your heart with your heavenly father.
