DOWN WITH THE ORANGE MENACE!
In episode 24 of Careers in the Business of Law, Brian McGovern talks with David about growing up on the ice in Connecticut, getting his first patent, becoming AIG's first Chief Legal Data Officer, what evergreen traits he looks for in new talent, and finally, what his Spotify data reveals about his taste in music. Today's guest is Brian McGovern. A pioneer of Legal Operations, Brian led one of the largest global enterprise legal management software implementations to date when he served as Senior Vice President and Legal Chief Data Officer at AIG. Brian is dedicated to partnering with clients to drive success through process improvement, technological innovation, and the sharing of knowledge and best practices he's accumulated – and pioneered – throughout his over 25-year career. He is a speaker and thought leader, he is obsessed with helping clients navigate the nuances of selecting and implementing legal technology so they can drive meaningful value that positively impacts the entire business. (0:09) Scientist to Blackbelt to Data Officer. David Cowan welcomes Brian to the podcast. Brian's jungle gym took him all over: roles at Duracell, GE, Credit Suisse, AIG, and now Mitratech. (1:42) Early Inspirations. Brian's childhood in Connecticut included as much ice time as you'd expect, but it was his love of science and math, rather than hockey, that proved most useful to his future career. But, "the number one thing I wanted to be when I was seven years old was a father, and I got to do that.” (2:50) First Jobs and Formative Experiences. Discussing his first job at a specialty polymer company, Brian talks about the formative nature of his early work. He describes the flexibility and problem-solving skills he developed, which were key in shaping his career: "I got to do some of everything. And it taught me a lot about how to be flexible, how to solve problems." Brian also got his first patent for a high-potential lithium primary cathode. (4:33) Career Shift to Legal Operations. Brian details his transition into legal operations, highlighting his mathematical and process-oriented approach to problem-solving. He describes the diversity of talent in legal teams as exhilarating and integral to success: "All of them together is really what drives an excellent legal operations group." (6:03) Setting Up Legal Operations at AIG. Brian recounts his experiences setting up AIG's first comprehensive legal operations, focusing on teamwork and diversity to achieve ambitious goals. He reflects on the collaboration that led to saving "$1.2 billion over five years," showcasing the power of diverse expertise in achieving outstanding results. (8:17) Role Expansion at Mitratech. Brian talks about the opportunity to scale his impact, interacting with numerous legal departments worldwide. He loves the scope of his role today interacting with hundreds of legal ops teams "I get to talk to them about ‘what do they do with training?' What are they doing with technology? What are they doing with data?" (10:09) Seeking Talent and Adapting to Changes. In his current role, Brian looks for evolving attributes in potential hires, including a solid understanding of AI and regulatory issues. He advises on maintaining curiosity and adaptability: "You at least have to have an idea of what AI is doing... so that you're ready to learn and hit the ground running." (12:39) Continuous Learning and Radical Curiosity. Brian offers advice on professional growth and learning, advocating for the consumption of media in forms that best suit individual preferences, whether podcasts, videos, or books. He stresses the importance of staying updated and adaptable, especially with emerging technologies like AI and regulatory changes in the legal and tech industries. "Find the things you like because all of those streams have valuable things for you right now." (16:09) Daily Routine of an Executive Director. Brian outlines a typical day in his life, detailing both travel-heavy and home-based workdays. His schedule is packed with meetings, client interactions, and strategic planning, all aimed at enhancing service delivery and customer engagement at Metrotech. He also emphasizes the importance of family time, particularly attending his son's baseball games. "When I'm working from home, like I am today, I probably have 12-15 meetings a day." (20:29) Musical Inspirations: U2 and Personal Favorites Brian shares his musical preferences, giving a breakdown of his Spotify usage data: Billy Joel, Def Leopard, The Pogues, and revealing U2 as his top choice among bands, with "So Cruel" standing out as his favorite song. He reflects on the impact of music on his personal and professional life, noting his recent experience seeing U2 perform live. "If I was going to pick my favorite U2 song, it would be 'So Cruel.'" 30 years ago this week, U2 released Achtung Baby, the 1991 opus that helped them roar back to relevance after being sidelined by the commercial and critical disappointment of their 1998 documentary and album Rattle and Hum. Click here for the best albums of 1991 Produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, Achtung Baby saw the Irish outfit refresh their sound with the emerging alternative flavors of the day, including industrial and dance music, while also largely abandoning the self-serious tone of earlier works. It also produced some of the band's biggest hits (One, Mysterious Ways, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses) and some of their best deep cuts (So Cruel, Love Is Blindness, Ultraviolet (Light My Way). On this week's podcast episode, myself and co-host Chris Logan dive into the album's legacy, why it helped keep the band relevant in the face of Nirvana and the alternative rock revolution, how its held up over the years, why The Fly isn't better remembered as the monster single it was at the time, and the biggest question: which album is better, it or The Joshua Tree? *Side note: During my intro I noted U2 were a British band, along with a few other minor inaccuracies. Whoopsies. I haven't gotten a lot of sleep this week. We've also included an Amazon link for the newly announced 30th anniversary deluxe edition of the album. The band U2's song, So Cruel, is one of my favorites. A mood of melancholy and lyrics that strike to the heart of the human condition, tragic relationships, and unrequited love. A condition of frailty so apparent today. One of my favorite lines: “Desperation is a tender trap It gets you every time” So Cruel is about love between a man and a women. But love and passion can exist in other areas. Lately, I've seen examples of this in small business owners struggling to survive. Their passion turned to despair. Especially in California where the desperation of shutdowns are now requiring police officers and other officials to confront business owners who won't comply because their livelihoods are at stake. It is truly heartbreaking. What you don't see is the desperate struggle of love and passion that leads to a successful business. The heartbreak of lessons learned from failure. Then some bureaucrat takes it all away while Wal-Mart and Amazon prosper. One example is the Pomp Salon in Stockton, California, it's attempted shut-down by armed officers captured on video. From Thomas Merton's book, A Vow of Conversation: Journals 1964-65: "On the Wednesday I was in New York, it was a lovely morning and at noon I rode down in the taxi to the Guggenheim Museum through the park under the tunnels of light and foliage, with the driver talking about his problems, his nerves, his analysis and his divorce. The more I think about the museum, the more I recognize it as a light, beautiful, airy and intelligent place. And the Van Goghs, wheels of fire, cosmic, rich, full-bodied hones victories over desperation, permanent victory, especially the last light-and-shadow calligraphic impastos." We overcome despair with cosmic fire!

Well it happened to Graca Williams on TikTok and she's here to talk about it! Graca is a stay-at-home mom who grew up in the Congo and now lives in New York. She does baby-led weaning with her daughter Zuri and she made major headlines last week after posting a video on TikTok of the lamb curry recipe she made and served her baby. People were SO CRUEL in the comments of the lamb curry video...one troll even threatened to call CPS on her! I wanted to chat with Graca to learn more about the types of foods she makes and feeds Zuri, as well as her small business creating seasoning and spice blends and sauces that incorporate her favorite Caribbean and African food flavors. And I also wanted to share this amazing mom's story about pushing her baby's palate beyond boring baby food and to let her know there's a whole big baby-led weaning community out here that really supports and encourages the work she is doing and the foods she is feeding! U2's 'Achtung Baby' was the #1 album in December of 1991 and for plenty of reasons. Hit singles like "One", "Mysterious Ways", "Whose Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses", "Even Better Than The Real Thing" and "The Fly" mixed in with some of the band's greatest deep tracks ("Zoo Station", "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World", "Until The End Of The World", "So Cruel", "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)") and you have one of the greatest albums in rock history. In this episode you'll get the stories behind the songs (including audio of early demos), the album's odd title, the other possible album cover ideas, the very interesting location where the band recorded the album and the emergence of Bono's alter ego "The Fly".CD TRACK LISTING:1. Welcome to the extra-tangenty 51st episode anniversary of the Department of Tangents Podcast, my interview with inventor and Information Philosopher Dr. Robert Doyle, with new music from Ruby Boots. This interview came about it a strange way. For years I have been trying to explain to people my favorite board game as a kid, Stop Thief. It had a regular cardboard square with a cartoon grid on it, and your job was to find the thief, who was still actively moving around the different stores and the outside on the street. What was different about Stop Thief was that it had a handheld scanner giving you audio clues – footsteps, doors opening, shattering glass, street noises. It was a lot of fun, and I've always been on the lookout for it at thrift stores. This Christmas, my wife Melissa gave me an updated version of the game released last year by Restoration Games who did a top flight job of it. The game included a quick history and mentioned that its creator, Dr. Robert Doyle, lived in Massachusetts. I got in touch with Restoration Games, and they put me in touch with Dr. Doyle, who, as it turns out, lives in the same house he has lived in since 1970, and it is stuffed with wonderful books and every new bit of communication technology you can imagine, including a bunch of games he designed that were never released, like a handheld flight simulator, and the “suitcase computers” that contained the original electronics for Stop Thief and other games. That would have been fascinating enough on its own. What I didn't know when I initially contacted Dr. Doyle was just how accomplished he is and in just how many fields. We start the interview going through the cliff notes of that history – PhD in Astrophysics from Harvard and consulting on the space program before helping to simplify editing for Super 8, then on to Parker Brothers where he invented Stop Thief and, the one many of my friends were excited about, Merlin. Then he created MacPublisher, the first desktop publishing program, to bring publishing to the masses. And there might not even be a Department of Tangents Podcast if Doyle hadn't worked with Christopher Lydon in 2003 to bring radio to the Web in a form that would eventually become known as podcasting. To top it of, he is what he calls an Information Philosopher, and a strong advocate for the existence of free will. If you want to follow up on what Dr. Doyle is doing now, his books and lecture series, you can find that at www.informationphilosopher.com. Our featured track for this episode comes from rocking singer/songwriter Ruby Boots. It's called "It's So Cruel," and it's from her second album, and first for Bloodshot Records, Don't Talk About It. She's got a great, tough rock and roll sound and I'm looking forward to hearing more from her, and to seeing her live if she comes through Boston. You can find out more about her at www.RubyBootsMusic.com.

With its rolling, militant hi-hats and G-Funk inspired wailing synths. ‘Hands On That Ass’ takes the usual tropes associated with ‘Trap’ music and evolves them, Mediks-style. Hold on to your hats people. TRACKLISTINGMediks - Hulk Dodge & Fuski - ???
