Pioneers and Pathfinders

Mishcon de Reya is one of the most unique and fascinating law firms in the world. Today's guest, Elliot Moss, is the mind behind Mishcon's brand. Elliot is chief brand officer and a partner at Mishcon, a 600 fee-earner firm headquartered in London. This unique combination of roles is made possible by the Legal Services Act 2007 in the UK. Elliot has overall responsibility for brand, marketing, communications, client development, new business, and social impact for the firm. He comes from the world of advertising, having worked for Leo Burnett and Leagas Delaney. It was here that he first met Mishcon's managing partner—now executive chairperson—Kevin Gold. After a two-year contract with the firm, Elliot stayed on, attracted by what he calls the great “volume of intellectual capital” in the law. Since then, he has become the first nonlawyer to be named as one of the Financial Times' 10 Most Innovative Individuals. He also happens to have a long-running podcast called Jazz Shapers, where he interviews founders and entrepreneurs on their own professional journeys. It was a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation. We discussed the cultural attributes that make Mishcon such an innovative and unique firm. We also veered into a number of other intriguing topics. For example, the firm recently sponsored a film from The Economist on the culture wars, which is not typical for a law firm, and we talked about how their atypical branding moves are “utterly rational.” We also talked about why he made the leap from consumer-oriented branding to the law, how he made the case for Mishcon to make him a partner, and what's next for their IPO—and how he sold it to his partners.

Monotronic – XRadio Featured Artist of the Month [April 2022] The XRadio Featured Artist of the Month for April 2022 is the American indietronic group, Monotronic. Hailing from New York City, Monotronic has been buzzing around the internet with their hit single, Kids of Summer. Since emerging in 2016, Monotronic have maintained their status as a ponderous and provocative enigma. Conceived by guitarist/producer Ramsey Elkholy, Monotronic started as a loose collective of NYC-based musicians. The rotating cast of musicians have shared the stage and recorded with the likes of Joe Jackson, Robert Randolph, Elliot Moss, The Spin Doctors and Dweezil Zappa, to name a few. The Monotronic sound is a combination of electronic music with a wide range of cultural influences, mostly drawn from Elkholy's time spent in Calcutta studying Indian classical music and his travels throughout Southeast Asia, where he spent nearly two years in the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia among the Orang Rimba tribe. He describes Monotronic as “a concept, whereby each instrument can be heard as a continuation of the other and the music sounds as one distinct whole, emanating from a single source”. Along with performing at iconic venues up and down the East Coast and New York City, the band has also graced the bills of festivals such as Disc Jam and Meeting of the Minds. It’s his most deeply personal record, intertwining such sentiments with a dense electronic soundtrack over the course of its 11 tracks, marrying the brutally honest with the willfully opaque. Like much of the rest of his work, the musician record the album largely solo, constructing its pieces with an arsenal of multi-instrumental prowess. On a recent visit to the city, Moss discussed the process of musical catharsis and transforming the personal into a public display.

Evan Marien is a composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Decatur, Illinois who now lives in Brooklyn, NY. Although Evan grew up playing trombone, piano, guitar, and drums, he is primarily known for his performances and recordings on the electric bass.  Most recently he has been playing bass, keys and singing background vocals for electronic songwriter Elliot Moss, playing bass with Thundercat drummer Justin Brown's NYEUSI, and the last bassist to play in guitar legend Allan Holdsworth's band.  Evan attended MacArthur High School, where he played in the Downbeat award-winning MacArthur Jazz Band.  This band brought him many awards and opportunities, winning Best Soloist at multiple competitions, a full scholarship to study at Birch Creek in Wisconsin's beautiful Door County, sharing the stage with Maria Schneider's Orchestra/Big Band and Maynard Ferguson's band. Evan was also a part of the MacArthur Jazz Combo, which in his junior year won Best High School Combo in the nation by Downbeat Magazine. Evan attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. During his time at Berklee, Marien studied under Matthew Garrison, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, Joe Lovano, Kenwood Dennard and Lincoln Goines to name a few. In 2009, Marien graduated Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music and the same year was voted in the Bass Player Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards, one of the top three "Most Exciting New Players".  Besides leading his project with drummer Dana Hawkins, He has recorded or performed with Virgil Donati, Wayne Krantz, Cory Wong (Vulfpeck), Zach Danziger, Nate Wood, Louis Cole, Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah), Mark Guiliana, Victor Wooten, Ian Chang (Son Lux), Mike Slott, Mitski, A$AP Ferg producer Frankie P and many other incredible music makers and instrumentalists.  Evan is a bass faculty member at The Collective and The New School in NYC, teaching modern music to all instrumentalists.  Evan stopped by with Brian to talk growing up with music, jazz to funk, Herbie Hancock to video game soundtracks and a lot more.

There's a danger to cooking with fire. Recently, B's Cracklin in Atlanta had a fire that consumed their entire restaurant. Within days of the news Leo Botello IV, owner of Truth BBQ in Houston, put together a fundraiser. Not for the restaurant, insurance will eventually cover that, but for the employees of B's Cracklin. For the hard working people in the barbecue industry who have temporarily lost their jobs. Watching people come together in a shared goal is truly beautiful. In this episode I get to talk to a ton of great people in BBQ. Elliot Moss of Buxton Hall, Mauro "Max" Chiefari formerly of Franklin, Matt Horn, The Mighty Joe Yim, Burt Bakman, Wayne Mueller and Clay Cowgill. I even get a quick chat with Reed, Chris and Cole who are part of the hard working team at Truth BBQ. If you haven't been to Truth, the food is exceptional and the staff is unreal. Their attention to hospitality and service is a beautiful thing to watch. Like many of these event episodes, I'm chasing down the story and catching these guys as they're working. I started at 6am and was on my feet with the Pitmasters till service at 8pm. A long day of fun and watching the masters work. I'm grateful for all the access and information I'm allowed by professionals in BBQ. It is an honor to be allowed to get in the way as much as I do. I feel like an embedded journalist chasing the fire, smoke and sweat that goes into the delicious food we all love. I hope you enjoy this episode and feel free to reach out to any of these pit masters or myself if you have any questions. Also, send your love to Bryan and his team because they are working hard to get open again.   Thank you for listening and if you liked the show please leave a 5 star rating on apple podcasts.
