Synopsis: Learn the history behind May Day, or International Workers' Day. The holiday commemorates the 1886 Chicago workers' strike known as the Haymarket Affair, where laborers demanded an eight-hour workday. The protest turned deadly and several activists were martyred—marking the day as a symbol of the ongoing fight for workers' rights.Description (Rewind- Origin Date May 2016): Laura and Peter Linebaugh discuss the origins of May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, the subject of his book, "The Incomplete, True, Authentic, and Wonderful History of May Day." Linebaugh is professor emeritus at the University of Toledo, and the author of many books, including the Magna Carta Manifesto; Stop Thief, The Commons, Enclosures and Resistance. Laura also shares her F-Word commentary on the intersectional feminism of 19th Century Anarchist Lucy Parsons. "The changes can happen very quickly, very quickly. Thinking of James Connolly, and the Easter Rebellion, very quickly, audacity, audacity . . . that's the rule of social change." Guest: Peter Linebaugh, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toledo, AuthorARE YOU AUDACIOUS? STOP THIEF!!! Across the world copyright law is quietly changing or being changed, why? AI models have to learn from somewhere and be trained on existing art. Yet recognising this or compensating artists is a pain in the proverbials for governments who want investment in their countries and economies, so copyright laws are being challenged and changed. A group of artists released a silent album last week in protest, calling it theft!! I discuss this, how artists have very little ability to stand in the way of digital progress. Catherine Malabou returns to the podcast on the eve of her most recent work being translated into English, a book entitled "Stop Thief! Anarchism and Philosophy". We revisit the arguments for ontological anarchism and attempt to elucidate a bridge between anarchy in philosophy and politics. Catherine also shares her views on cryptocurrency, AI, and other technological trends as they relate to the prospect of a "dawning anarchy".  Moreover, we explore the distinction between liberatory and libertarian anarchisms as they both emerge on the cybernetic plane of the control society.Support the podcast:Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastZer0 Books and Repeater Media Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comOrder 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/Support the show

SHOW NOTES 04m10s: This is Don Norman's legendary book, Design of Everyday Things. It frequently comes up in this show, although despite what Scott says, we have never done a dedicated episode on it. We did discuss it a lot with game designer and graphic designer Daniel Solis on Ludology 204 - The Eyes Have It. 05m09s: The prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, pronounced "RIHS-dee").  12m57s: For those of you outside the US, the functional metric equivalent to 11"x17" paper is A3. 16m12s: The most recent Pandemic Legacy game is Pandemic Legacy: Season 0. 16m56s: Laser cutters emit toxic fumes; please only ever use them with proper ventilation!  17m48s: The Brother ScanNCut. 18m34s: Gil's tip for making quick tokens: get a bunch of circle labels, and a bunch of poker chips! 1" diameter labels work well for standard poker chips, 0.5" diameter labels work well for mini poker chips. Once you set up to print to the circle template, you can make a bunch of tokens very quickly. And to replace them, simply print new labels and stick them above the old labels. It's great for early prototypes where the shape of the token is not hugely important! 21m08s: Heroscape 42m09s: The web suggestion form Lindsay mentions is right on Restoration's front page! 45m24s: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 46m41s: Pillars of the Earth is both a well-known book by Ken Follett and a solid worker-placement board game with a polarizing turn order mechanism. 49m00s: This cake discussion actually came relatively early in the interview. It was a bit too much of a tangent to include in the main episode, but we've put it here as a bonus. Enjoy! 53m24s: For more on edible board games, check out Ludology 210 - The Way to a Gamer's Heart, in which we chat with Jenn Sandercock about her cookbook/rulebook where she gives recipes and instructions for several edible games.

The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. ~ John 10:10 (NLT) I had saved up to buy my first car since I was 12. It was a 1984 Honda CRX, a two-seater that got well over 50 miles per gallon. It was a deep read with the skirt of the car painted gray. The one thing it was lacking, however, was a decent stereo system. So, I began saving my money for that too. Eventually, I was able to purchase new speakers, an amplifier, and a new deck with a CD player. (It was new to have a CD player in your car back then.) It had plenty of volume and, of course, plenty of bass output. I finally had a true, teenager's car. Unfortunately, a car with a nice stereo system in it is something that a lot of people desire, including thieves. Early one morning, my dad and I were awoken to the sound of my car alarm going off, then the sound of screeching tires. By the time we got out to the driveway to see what was going on, the thieves were gone. All of the stereo equipment was stripped out of my car. I felt bummed, but also violated. The thieves didn't just steal the stereo, they also stole my peace of mind. Every morning as I went out to my car, I wondered if it would still be there. I wondered if my windows would be smashed. I wondered what else could go wrong. It was unsettling. Anyone who has had a car stolen, or a house broken into will tell you the same. It's not just the stuff that's taken, it's the robbing of a sense of peace that often hurts the most. This is what Satan wants to do in our lives. He doesn't just want to give us grief each day and try to trip us up. He wants to steal away our peace. He doesn't want us to be able to rest in the promises of Jesus. He doesn't want us to have hope. He wants to rob us, ultimately, of our faith. He knows that if he can rob us of this that we are doomed. We are lost. In contrast, we have a God who wants only good things for us. As our verse today states, “The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” And that life that He wants to give us isn't just in the here and now, but all the way into eternity. Today, and every day, don't let Satan rob you of the joy Jesus wants to provide. Thank God for His goodness, faithfulness, and the peace that He brings. #God #Jesus #Bible #Christian #Devotional #Discipleship #Thief #Scripture #Life #Peace #Hope #Destroy #Satan

In this episode Steve, Dan and Conor are joined by the hottest designer in board gaming at the moment, Travis Jones. Travis, the designer of the recently released Pendulum, shares with us his journey from mild-mannered office worker to playtesting and releasing one of the most talked-about games this year. It's a fantastic interview and we were very grateful for his time. And he hangs around for the rest of the show!! In our Sizzling Games this week Conor holds back the invaders on Spirit Island, Travis has been taking his friends into space in The Crew, and Dan plays cops and robbers in Stop Thief! In our Board Game Bracket segment we resolve the Too Many Bones vs El Grande match-up, and then set-up the final bracket for Round 1: Chronicles of Crime vs Everdell. These are two massive games which are favourites amongst board gamers; Dan defends Chronicles of Crime while Conor vouches for Everdell; so make sure you get your vote in and make sure your favourite. Finally, in Swear An Oath, Steve and Steve both managed to turn around their oaths in 48 hours, knocking over Tin Epic Kingdoms and Era: Medieval Age. Dan had a blast playing the cooperative Atlantis Rising. The team then swear oaths to play A Feast for Odin (Steve - pressured by Travis), Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North (Conor), and Trickerion: Legend of Illusion (Dan - egged on by Nereda and Wesley from our FB Community). And Travis even gets in on the action by swearing an oath to play Tribune: Primus Inter Pares. Welcome to the extra-tangenty 51st episode anniversary of the Department of Tangents Podcast, my interview with inventor and Information Philosopher Dr. Robert Doyle, with new music from Ruby Boots. This interview came about it a strange way. For years I have been trying to explain to people my favorite board game as a kid, Stop Thief. It had a regular cardboard square with a cartoon grid on it, and your job was to find the thief, who was still actively moving around the different stores and the outside on the street. What was different about Stop Thief was that it had a handheld scanner giving you audio clues – footsteps, doors opening, shattering glass, street noises. It was a lot of fun, and I've always been on the lookout for it at thrift stores. This Christmas, my wife Melissa gave me an updated version of the game released last year by Restoration Games who did a top flight job of it. The game included a quick history and mentioned that its creator, Dr. Robert Doyle, lived in Massachusetts. I got in touch with Restoration Games, and they put me in touch with Dr. Doyle, who, as it turns out, lives in the same house he has lived in since 1970, and it is stuffed with wonderful books and every new bit of communication technology you can imagine, including a bunch of games he designed that were never released, like a handheld flight simulator, and the “suitcase computers” that contained the original electronics for Stop Thief and other games. That would have been fascinating enough on its own. What I didn't know when I initially contacted Dr. Doyle was just how accomplished he is and in just how many fields. We start the interview going through the cliff notes of that history – PhD in Astrophysics from Harvard and consulting on the space program before helping to simplify editing for Super 8, then on to Parker Brothers where he invented Stop Thief and, the one many of my friends were excited about, Merlin. Then he created MacPublisher, the first desktop publishing program, to bring publishing to the masses. And there might not even be a Department of Tangents Podcast if Doyle hadn't worked with Christopher Lydon in 2003 to bring radio to the Web in a form that would eventually become known as podcasting. To top it of, he is what he calls an Information Philosopher, and a strong advocate for the existence of free will. If you want to follow up on what Dr. Doyle is doing now, his books and lecture series, you can find that at www.informationphilosopher.com.   Our featured track for this episode comes from rocking singer/songwriter Ruby Boots. It's called "It's So Cruel," and it's from her second album, and first for Bloodshot Records, Don't Talk About It. She's got a great, tough rock and roll sound and I'm looking forward to hearing more from her, and to seeing her live if she comes through Boston. You can find out more about her at www.RubyBootsMusic.com.
