Murder Most Foul
Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story

Murder Most Foul

Can two brilliant minds outsmart the law?  In 1924 Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two wealthy University of Chicago students, sought to commit the perfect crime simply for the thrill of it.  They meticulously planned the kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks, a distant relative of Loeb.  Despite their careful plotting, a pair of eyeglasses left at the crime scene linked them to the murder.  Their trial captivated the nation, especially with the famous defense attorney Clarence Darrow arguing against the death penalty.  The chilling lack of remorse and intellectual arrogance displayed by Leopold and Loeb turned this case into one of the most notorious in American history! Two of my passions are True Crime and the stage. In this segment of Murder Most Foul, I have been able to combine them into one podcast. Lizzie Borden can boast numerous plays, an Opera and a Ballet choreographed by the legendary Agnes DeMille inspired by her crimes. My guest today, Stephen Dolginoff, turned the story of thrill-killers Leopold and Loeb into theatrical musical, entitled appropriately “Thrill Me,” which is still thrilling audiences today. He also recently wrote a fascinating book on the 30-year odyssey of taking his vision from first draft to the stage and beyond. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The musical interludes throughout the podcast are from the Original Cast Recording starring Stephen Dolginoff as Leopold and Doug Kreeger as Loeb.

Listen in as we muse over our brews, talk about some dental stuff (because cavity search), take a detour through some Nintendo stuff, John has a musical interlude, share some tales from urgent care, Lauren discusses her hot dentists, we plug our family meat, some Frasier talk, prescription woes, some RSVLTS talk, and so much more!Lauren has Dr. Dank Pineapple Dream from Wicked Weed Brewing. Happy St. Patrick's Day, dear listeners! Fire and Water Records is proud to spend the day discussing the history and discography of Ireland's chief export: the rock 'n roll band U2. Join Ryan Daly and superfan Omar Uddin as they chronicle the band's atypically ambitious start in Dublin to falling in love with the myth of America from a tour bus, back across the ocean to the industrial cobblestone streets of Eastern Europe, only to return and conquer pop-rock and the world in the 21st century, all whilst crafting some of the most sonically charged, nakedly earnest, and aggressively catchy rock songs in music history. Also, Ryan reveals too much of his wasted teenage years, and it's totally cringe. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me: Was hat DIE FRAU IM NEBEL zu verbergen? Adios.

Establishing your setting and time period from the get-go of your writing process is vital in creating a memorable book, real tension, dynamic characters, and a more complex reading experience. Writers Hesse Phillips and Louise Berliner help us figure out how to do it.Hesse Phillips (she/they) was born next-door to a chicken farm in Western PA but now lives in Spain. Their Novel Incubator project Lightborne, about the mysterious death of queer Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe, was a finalist in the Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair 2022 and is now out on submission. Their poetry and prose have appeared in The Bridport Review, the epoque (pronounced “epoch”) press e-zine, Embark: A Literary Journal for Novelists, and is forthcoming in Emerge Literary Journal, The Hyacinth Review, and other publications. They have a PhD in Drama from Tufts University and are obsessed with all things relating to sixteenth and early seventeenth century English theatre and its intersections with religion, gender, sexuality, and politics.Another lucky Novel Incubator grad, Louise Berliner's work has appeared in VQR, Porter Gulch Review, Ibbetson Review, The Mom Egg, Sacred Fire and various chapbook collections. Her first book, Texas Guinan GuyNan, Queen of the Night Clubs, written in part thanks to an NEH grant, is a biography of a Roaring ‘20s night club hostess famous for saying “Hello, Suckers!” Her middle grade novel, Houdini's Elephant, is with her agent and she's currently working on an adult literary novel with a magical realism kick. Her work is heavily influenced by New York City and the 20th century, as well as the ghosts of her matrilineage. Also discussed: Ben Percy's chapter “Activating Setting” in his craft book Thrill Me. The 1995 motion picture Batman Forever marked the 3rd entry in the first cinematic universe of the titular DC Comics superhero. While previous entries had been directed by Tim Burton, Forever found Burton in a producing role instead, with directorial duties falling to Joel Schumacher. In contrast to the dark and macabre direction Burton took the film series, Schumacher found inspiration in the camp 1960s Batman TV show, to mixed critical reviews, but major commercial success. The film would go down as a blemish on the Batman franchise among fans, who along with its ill-fated sequel Batman & Robin did not appreciate the more light-hearted takes on the caped crusader. Nowadays it's best remembered as a low point for the comic book franchise, but also for its unassuming soundtrack, which just so happened to contain two of the most enduring pop songs of the 1990s: "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2, and "Kiss From A Rose" by Seal. For two songs iconic to the decade to be connected to an otherwise mediocre soundtrack for an objectively bad superhero movie is a novelty in and of itself. That's why we're digging into this OST anomaly on a new episode of Jukebox Zeroes. Joining Lilz and Pat is streamer and author Danesha Artis, as the trio are swallowed up into 90s oblivion, and a never-ending chasm filled with Nick Cave saying "Daddy-O" way too much.#WeAreNormalNowLocal Music Feature: Collapser - "A Ghost & The Sea"

THE ORIGIN OF THIS MUSIC:Created by Gibbs Williams  It is hard to believe it has been decades since I graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. It is even harder to believe that I received an invitation to attend the 65th reunion. Unfortunately, with the covid pandemic still in the air, although vaccinated, I thought it prudent better to pass up this event hoping conditions fare more salutary for the 70th. Although disappointed I would miss the reunion I was struck by a wave of pleasurable nostalgia.           Recalling those the best of those glorious days I remember the feelings of the cool Miami Beach breezes enveloping us on our weekly Friday night dances in the patio of our high school. All who attended seemed hypnotized with feelings of a pervasive feeling of at-one-ment in which we collectively bathed in what was then and even now experienced as our own unique mixture of heroin- like- atmosphere. This natural high was experienced by many of us as nothing short of pure unadulterated nostalgia. Nostalgia then and now was like our living in a collective commune protecting us from what probably would have been experienced as overwhelming normal adolescent pain if we had been open to feeling it.  I was especially nostalgic remembering my self and four other guys daring to form a small combo good enough to play at all of the school dances. We even played well enough that every New Years Eve a Miami Beach Hotel hired us to perform. Our Small combo consisted of Drums (Marvin Guccion), Bass (John Schaffer), Trombone (Peter Weill), Trumpet (Kenny Kupper) and Piano (Gibbs Williams). Unknowingly we had no knowledge that we were on the cutting edge of what would soon be an explosion of worldwide bands.           In is in this memorable context that I wish to share an album of some of those unforgettable songs which best seem to celebrate the richness not only of those glorious days from the 9th to the 12th grade, but all the years that have too quickly passed - as well as the years that are yet to come. It is unfortunate that we never recorded our iconic sounds. The best I can offer with the goal in mind of capturing the sounds we made are my original arrangements made on my Yamaha synthesizer. The songs we played were standards from the forties and fifties. I have titled this compilation Nostalgia.                                "NOSTALGIA" -  65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train,Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B.       I know all was not perfect then as we were all struggling to survive adolescence so those days were hardly always serene. Yet, there was, and still is for me and I imagine for many of my class mates, a certain undeniable 'specialness' about our class which for many of us still acts like a permanent magnet pulling us back again and again to re-unite.       As for me, if we had been recognized as ground-breaking I am certain our lives at least vocationally would have taken a much different route. However, I can honestly say that I am happy to being a still practicing psychoanalyst in New York City - a happily married husband and father having started our own dynasty of four grandchildren.

"NOSTALGIA" -  65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55Album1 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train, Album 2Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B.

It's rare that I get to talk about a band I know as well as U2 on this podcast, but I got a real education on the band and on their Pop album from Jordan Stepp of Athens Music Junkie. In addition to walking me through the dozen tracks of Pop, Jordan talked about working for an academic press, writing as a freelance music journalist and the important place that Pop holds in U2's discography.Jordan recommended that I watch the video for Discothèque, and I'm glad that I followed that advice. They take a nice long trip to Tangent Town and learn all about ASMR. They're still not clear about Den Mothers and have a lot more questions. As always, they ask the important questions like when did “Miller Time” start? Everyone grab your dinosaur egg plums and THRILL ME! Most importantly, we'll learn if Kim will stay alive in Night of the Creeps Dir. Riddle me this, riddle me that, how many tunes were inspired by the Bat? This edition of The O/S/T Party finds Libby & Joe diving into the mid-90s superhero muck that is Batman Forever. It's a neon dayglo nightmare, and the soundtrack is no different, full of smooth R&B, college rock leftovers and one or two of the best songs of the 90s. Not only did this album spawn SIX. RADIO. SINGLES. ("Kiss From a Rose", anyone?) It also sold millions of copies, would be nominated for, win AND lose Grammy awards, and inspired one of the most baffling animated music videos of all time. Also in this episode, we discuss middle-aged teenager Dick Grayson, how and why this film became The Jim Carrey Show, Tommy Lee Jones' immortal putdown, and just the general rock opera-ness of the whole production. Strap yourselves in, folks. This episode goes some places!   SHOW NOTES: The video for U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" must be seen to be believed.
