But as good as that convo is, if there's one moment that's going to be talked about from this episode, it's this: Church prom. Yes, the cast brings the week's Slices — like the Wendy's backlash, government spying and the Florida Man games — and at the end we have Hot Takes, but all you're going to talk about is Emily's formative memories becoming the queen of church prom. I spoke to the super-chill Oklahoma native Max Rainer of Wilderado in this compelling interview, and it was like meeting an old friend. Max is a family man who cares deeply about the relationships in his life and quite intentionally strives to strike a healthy balance between his home life and his time on the road. However, after having played over 250 shows in 2022, Wilderado is now seeking to maintain a bit more measured pace. But this is not to say that Wilderado is slowing down; the band is doing quite the opposite. With their first full length album coming out in 2021, the self-titled "Wilderado," and new music being released regularly, Max continues to give everything he has to his fans without feeling constrained by standard industry norms. I get deep with Max about life both at home and on the road, and we discuss the beauty of Malibu, his newly released and latest single "In Between" featuring Matt Berninger of The National, and why the connection with his fans is so important to him. Max is a unique talent and special human, and I'm here for that. Tiffanie DeBartolo, CESG & Co-Founder of Bright Antenna Records, rightfully recognizes being a woman in the music industry as an asset. “I am not afraid to bring vulnerability to my work,” she says. “I have parts that are soft and tender. I also have steadfast parts important for me to bring to the world, whether it's my work or personal life.” Raised in Youngstown, Ohio, DeBartolo saw mainstream acts, as well as all the metal bands who passed through the area. Then, a “life-changing” U2 concert brought the realization music was a part of her deeper psyche. Cut to 2007, DeBartolo co-founded Bright Antenna Records - before the digital release reigned supreme. But her commitment to the artists and building a steel-solid team led to success in uncharted territory. DeBartolo brings an empathy in her approach to her label clients in a way that is often lacking in the music industry at large. Her ability to listen to and interpret her artists' needs builds unyielding trust. For DeBartolo, artist support is multi-tiered. She is known for housing bands while on tour, cooking family-style spaghetti and meatballs (nonna's recipe), taking bands paintballing or on tropical retreats, and even baked homemade cookies for everyone at Bright Antenna and hand delivered them at the outset of COVID. She flew The Wombats on a chartered plane to a Redrocks show that absolutely needed to be played to break them. Then, did it again with Wilderado so they could make their Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance. But there is also that deeper level of support. Kyle Nicolaides of Beware of Darkness cites how one-on-one sessions with DeBartolo literally saved his life twice during dark periods. She has also personally covered therapy costs for some artists.  “This is why we do it,” DeBartolo says. “I want to ensure that all the artists I work with can make a living doing this, which can be very challenging. I want songs I put out to change the world. I want the songs to mean something to people the way it meant to me growing up.”  https://www.brightantenna.com/ © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Several years ago I nearly renamed my Sophisticated Morning mix series to Little Journeys.  I ended up not doing it because many of you talked me out of it.  But if I had....it WOULD have been fitting.  I have always looked at my mixes as, well, Little Journeys.  The newest Sophisticated Morning is just that;  a little journey. The first three songs belong loosely to an indie genre. I start the set off with one of my favorite vocalists, Emmit Fenn, whose voice drips with melancholy beauty before mixing into Kygo feat. James Gillespie "Gone Are The Days".  We all have those artists/producers/remixers that can do no wrong to us EVER, right?  Kygo is that one to me.  Everything he touches is...gold.  From there I finish that mini-set off with "Surefire" by Wilderado, a true indie band.  His voice aches with beauty.  I found these songs to be the best "soft launch" to stir interest and lead the listener off into musical bliss...From there I weave through a set of touching deep house heart-tuggers featuring the best of today's chill/deep house producers including Shallou, Tailor, Sultan + Shepard, A R I Z O N A and Le Youth.  During this middle set pay particular attention to Chris Howard "Lighthouse" (Track 6), Sultan + Shepard "Zima" (Track 7), A R I Z O N A "Moving On" (Track 9), Tailor "Holding Ground" (Track 10).  It's sometimes hard for me to classify favorite records. I love everything I play.  However, with those records mentioned above...they really all do belong in a class of their own.  The emotion they convey is next-level "heart music".  Rounding out the mix out I move into a more energetic sound that I will classify as "deep-heart anthems".  These are records that straddle the line between deep house, progressive house and trance.  I was going to mention my standouts for this set...but as I looked over the tracks I realized that every single one of these songs sends my soul soaring and are records that I would categorize as "next-level" in their beauty and production.  These are energy records that grab you...and SEND YOU FLYING.  Closing out in this manner really showcases my "little journeys" thought process.  As you listen and if you closely pay attention you'll notice that the ending records are nothing like the beginning ones!  And yet they mesh so beautifully and all seem as though they were made just for each other.  As always I mixed this set with every ounce of love that I've got to give.  I'm a firm believer that each of us is placed on earth with a purpose and I believe that mine is to bring joy and beauty to a world that I think needs it through music.  My hope is that you'll receive my gift and use it to fuel your days (and nights).  Take it, use it, share it.  From my heart...to your  ears...#/Artist/Title/Remix01. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mt. Joy over Zoom video.Mt. Joy recently released their third full-length offering, Orange Blood, along with the latest single, “Evergreen.” The track boasts upbeat guitar curls around a punk-y groove before colliding with an intoxicating refrain. The track's accompanying music video stars The Office star Creed Bratton, a personal friend of the band who last fall, joined the band on stage at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles. In the video, Creed sets off on a journey to prove it is never too late to chase what makes you happy.Kicking off their forthcoming album, Mt. Joy released “Lemon Tree” which was hailed as “a next-level song” by NPR and is currently Top 20 at AAA radio, followed by the colorful album title track, “Orange Blood.” The band is currently on their US Headlining “Orange Blood” 2022 Tour (with special guests Grammy®-nominated West Coast singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham, L.A. based indie-folk trio Wilderado, and The Brook & The Bluff). The tour kicked off in South Carolina on June 16 and make stops in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, and Dallas before wrapping in Austin, Texas on November 5. Go to http://www.mtjoyband.com/tour for more info on tickets. About Mt. JoyThe Philadelphia quintet—Matt Quinn [vocals, guitar], Sam Cooper [guitar], Sotiris Eliopoulos [drums], Jackie Miclau [keys, piano], and Michael Byrnes [bass]— take their name from the quiet rural town in southwest Pennsylvania, about four hours from their Philadelphia base. Forming in 2016, they made their mark two years later when their self-titled Mt. Joy debut album spun off "Silver Lining," an uplifting power ballad that went to #1 at AAA radio (Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay) and has eclipsed over 120 million Spotify streams to date. Their second album, Rearrange Us (2018) drew widespread critical raves. Over the past four years Mt. Joy has amassed over half a billion streams and have earned acclaim from NPR, Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, and more. The band has performed at a variety of festivals such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo and has toured with The Lumineers, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, The Revivalists, and The Head and The Heart. After a couple of years of struggling with writing, Rainer wrote songs there dealing with his struggles balancing being a father and a touring musician. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. For this episode all I had to do was ask my guest Deborah Laker to walk across the office to have this conversation. Deborah is our fall intern. She's in her final semester as an international student at Oral Roberts University, where's she's majoring in journalism and political science. She's from Uganda, which is located in Eastern Africa. It is a smaller country surrounded by South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The southeast portion of Uganda is Lake Victoria which is the base of the magnificent Nile River, which flows north through the middle of the country and thousands of miles later becomes the main source of water for Egypt. I've never been there, but I've long dreamed of visiting that part of the world. I have lived vicariously through Paul Theroux's travel writing in Dark Star Safari, and other books plus numerous documentaries. Also there's a lifelong obsession with ancient Egypt. I'd talk to Deborah from time to time about her home, but we agreed early on to do this podcast conversation, so I held off till we recorded it in late October to dive in and learn more. We discussed how she first learned about Tulsa, what her expectations were before arriving and how different this city and country is than what she expected. Being a journalist who studies global politics for fun, I wanted to learn more about what drove Deborah to chase those degrees and what she thinks she might do with them when she graduates. We also talk about the differences between our political system and Uganda's, and what it was like for her to witness the 2020 election season. It turns out her mom, Margaret, recently ran for office and lost this time, but she's not going to give up according to her proud daughter. I have to say, Margaret, go get ‘em! You've got a supporter over here in Oklahoma. I'll be cheering you on when the time comes for you to run again.I really enjoyed learning more about Deborah and how her experiences are shaping her. Toward the end of our conversation, I flipped the script and let her ask me a few questions. It's been great having her here as an intern. She shared a delicious curry recipe in our October issue, wrote about a new musical and courtroom dogs, and she has a great feature coming in December. She has a very bright future ahead, and I'm excited to follow her journey. Following my conversation with Deborah, hear a new song from Tulsa's Wilderado. More on that later. Ok let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Deborah Laker. Indie-rock trio Wilderado released its self-titled debut album in October. Two of three hail from Tulsa and Mannford, respectively, and moved back home from LA in 2018 to record the album. I talked to them shortly after their return and then music writer Julie Watson talked to them for last month's issue. ...And with that here is Wilderado with Mr. Major.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Wilderado over Zoom video! Tulsa Indie-rock trio Wilderado has released their new single “Head Right” – available to stream on all DSPs via Bright Antenna Records. A confident and boisterous slice of rock n’ roll, “Head Right” builds on what the band does best – combining soaring melodies with lush three-part harmonies – and is the first new song released from their forthcoming debut album, due out later this year. Produced by Angelo Petraglia (Kings of Leon, Patty Griffin) and Chad Copelin (Sufjan Stevens, LANY), “Head Right” is the first taste of new music from Wilderdo since releasing their 2020 single “Take Some Time,” which saw incredible remixes from alt-J, RJD2, Emancipator, and Kyle McEvoy & Ezzy. Formed in the California mountains in 2015, Wilderado has since accrued more than 70 MILLION streams across platforms and 3 MILLION monthly listeners. With several EPS and singles to their name, the band has built a passionate fan base through years of consistent touring with the likes of Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, Pete Yorn, Judah & the Lion, Mt. Joy, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise and main stage festival performances at Lollapalooza, BottleRock, Austin City Limits and more.Wilderado’s new single “Head Right” is out now! The band Wilderado is made up, as their About Us would suggest on their website: "Four Dudes." Those four dudes are Maxim Helmerich (vocals, guitar), Tyler Wimpee (guitar, vocals), Colton Dearing (percussion, keys, vocals) and Justin Kila (drums). While touring with Mt. Joy, I was lucky enough to catch them while they were in Louisville for a few beers and a quick podcast.  After a few beers, we delved into these questions to truly understand what makes a band: How did you meet? When did you start playing music? How do you write new songs? What's a day in the life of a touring band? How do you stay healthy on the road? How will you know you've made it as a band? How do you avoid burnout? What advice do you have for aspiring bands? What's the next big thing for the band? SPOILER ALERT: their biggest piece of advice: don't give up. Words for life. John and I tell ourselves that every day.  Last call questions: What's the best thing you've spent money on the last six months? Tyler: 2010 Jeep Wrangler Colton: 1964 Hofner Red Guitar Max: Plane tickets to see my wife What's the best long-form piece of information you've digested? Colton: The First of the Dark Tower Series (Gunslinger) Max: Stephen King's On Writing or Alan Watt's The Wisdom of Insecurity Tyler: Harry Potter What advice would your 60 year old self give you today? Max: stop worrying about the future Tyler: don't try to invest in too many things Colton: don't wear such tight pants............ What's your favorite drink? Colton: BEER Tyler: BEER (or Negronis) Max: Casa Dragones S/O to Sam Adams and MB Roland for providing some great drinks for the episode! Saturday has Neil Young and Promise of the Real, along with R&B superstar Pharrell Williams. Rootsy rock band Mumford & Sons and guitar virtuoso Santana will close out the festival on Sunday, May 26. The lineup again features more than 80 artists over the three days. "We've expanded the capability of the second stage," BottleRock CEO Dave Graham said. "We wanted to be able to attract some major acts to play the second stage at the same time the main stage was playing, and that's exactly what we did this year." The bill is rounded out by a slate of eclectic artists, including Sylvan Esso, OneRepublic, Flogging Molly, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Cypress Hill, Tash Sultana, Lord Huron, Big Boi, Bishop Briggs, Jeff Goldbum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and others. Graham said the addition of Young is particularly meaningful this year. "Neil Young has not performed in the Bay Area, publicly, since the last Bridge School Benefit Concert back in 2016," he said. "What an honor for us to have a legend like him up on our stage." BottleRock will again feature it's culinary stage pairing celebrity chefs with musicians, actors and Bay Area luminaries cooking up unique dishes for festivalgoers, along with the festival's focus on the region's best food and wine. The culinary stage lineup will be announced in April. "This year, BottleRock is also a part of the prize offerings for [TV show] Top Chef, so the winner will get an appearance on the Culinary Stage this year," Graham said. Last year, more than 120,000 camp out to see performances by Bruno Mars, The Killers, Muse and others. Tickets go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the festival's website. Prices range from $359 for a three-day general admission pass up to $1,599 for a three-day Skydeck and VIP Viewing passes. Platinum Passes for BottleRock, which cost upwards of $4,000, are sold out. Album Review On this episode of Follow the Sound, Brian and Greg review an EP from a great band that Brian discovered this year. Wilderado combines heartfelt lyrics with a sound that is dynamic and powerful. Favors is a brief 4 song EP but it marks a slight shift in the sound of the band from previous recordings....
