Bill Ryder-Jones, Anna Calvi and Poppy Hankin discuss the first piece of music that really affected them, how their writing has changed as they've grown older, and how much they're willing to give people control over their music.Bill Ryder-Jones is from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the Coral, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. Since then he's pursued a solo career, writing his own albums and film scores, as well as producing and playing on records for other artists including the Last Shadow Puppets, Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith, the Wytches and Hooton Tennis Club. He's recently released his fifth solo album Iechyd Da (which translates as "good health" in Welsh). Singer-songwriter and composer Anna Calvi is known for her operatic singing voice and virtuosic guitar skills. She's the only solo artist to have received three consecutive Mercury Prize nominations, going on to become a judge for the awards, and her other work includes everything from scoring seasons five and six of the acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders to a stage production of the opera The Sandman. Vocalist and guitarist Poppy Hankin leads London-based indie-rock trio Girl Ray. Their sound has taken them on a journey from C-86 style indie-rock to uplifting pop music; their third album Prestige, released last year, sees them reclaim disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture.

London-based three-piece Girl Ray join Headliner for a chat about their third album Prestige, how they continue to span styles and genre with each record, and the music that shaped them as people and artists.
Girl Ray - “Everybody's Saying That” from the 2023 album Prestige on Moshi Moshi London trio Girl Ray turn the beat around on today's Song of the Day with a dance-inspired track produced by Ben H. Allen, who's previously worked with Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, and Cut Copy, to name a very few. “The lyrics on this single were inspired by the straight-to-the-heart simplicity of the disco greats," vocalist/guitarist Poppy Hankin shared in a press release. "I wrote it while missing my partner while on tour in 2020, and it plays on themes of new love and self-doubt. Musically we took reference from the nu-disco resurgence that seemed to be taking off in 2020, in particular from the likes of Kylie Minogue (Disco), Jessie Ware (What's Your Pleasure?), Dua Lipa (Future Nostalgia), and Róisín Murphy (Róisín Machine). We were really inspired by all of these women re-imagining disco.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Happy birthday, mom! New tunes from Who Is She?, Sweeping Promises, The Baseball Project & Girl Ray.

El dúo Wild Child publica End of the world, su disco de íntimo y expansivo folk.

i went to a book sale today and i judged all the books by their covers. or more specifically, their spines. i chose the books based on the lettering on their spines and i guess we’ll see how it goes! but wow, ugh, some book covers are so ugly. i’m just hoping that if i’m drawn to the aesthetic of the cover art then i may be drawn to the content or style of writing?i judge people based on their aesthetics also (it’s a shortcut we all take, yah?) but it gets confusing because of places like urban outfitters and also because some of my favorite people have truly upsetting fashion sense.but like books, and people, i love a good recommendation. that way i don’t have to make time-saving judgements based on aesthetics. so what/who would you recommend to me?DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Valley Gals “Come Over” Real Rock01:24 Post Moves “Cerulean” No Dignity in Haste04:56 ITCHY BUGGER “Baker Man” Done One07:18 Crisman “Rock” Crisman Tape09:32 Xenia Rubinos “DIOSA” DIOSA vs. BUGEISHA12:17 Gutter Girls “Love Song” Gutter Girls EP13:59 Mister Goblin “Calendar Dogs” Is Path Warm?18:09 Paperman “fool zero” cherry brain21:37 Overwhelmed “Thirty Five” Who Rules The World?23:58 Les Halles “Golden Hour V-VI” Golden Hours26:19 Sondra Sun-Odeon “Oaks” Desyre29:16 franz murder “a dreamlike place…” brat school32:19 Post/Boredom “Everything Avoider” Ritualistic Time Abuser35:19 Tara Jane O'Neil “The Crying Game” Songs for Peacock38:57 2 Chevrons “Disappear” No Rules In Outta Space41:49 PickleBoy “downer days” taking care43:45 P.P. sent $$$ this week to BROWN TRANS & QUEER ORCHID HOUSE FIRE RELIEF FUND.gofund.me/eeedb70f“On 7/19/21, a fire started in a vacant home and spread to the neighboring home burning two houses down where residents lost everything in the burn and barely made it out with their lives in West Oakland, California. Orchid House was one of the homes and we are raising funds for 3 Brown Queer Trans and Nonbinary displaced folks. The fire alarm did not go off even while the house was engulfed in flames, so they are deeply blessed to have made it out alive. We are raising money for their housing security, insurance (health, car, and pets) food, gas, healing resources (therapy, herbal medicine, bodywork), shoes, clothing, and toiletries. They only have a secure space to stay for a week and after that are in need of permanent and affordable housing.”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Second Still “In Order” Equals EPGhost Soda “Never Understand” Love World iiiSpeedy Ortiz “Lean In When I Suffer” Twerp VerseSitcom “Still Life” Be The One You LoveBrian Borcherdt “Evil Twin” CoyotesRatboys “GL” GLTrue Blue “Rocky Bottom” Edge OfKal Marks “Loosed” Universal CareSURF HARP “MIRROR MAZE” MR. Carrie Moyer. Photo credit: © Girl Ray, 2016 Carrie Moyer is an artist and writer known for her sumptuous paintings which explore and extend the legacy of American Abstraction, while paying homage to many of its groundbreaking female figures, among them Georgia O’Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler and Elizabeth Murray. In equal measure abstract and representational, Moyer’s work proposes a kaleidoscopic worldview that embraces the sensual as much the rational. Playful logo-like silhouettes — vessels, towers, portals, meteorological phenomena, plant life, animal and human forms — demarcate arched prosceniums or abstract fields of color. These flattened archetypes and cheeky reference points often perform as compositional rigging around which flow cascades of paint, glitter and light. Whether invoking the natural or constructed world, inventive paint handling and succulent color seem to tempt all of the viewer’s senses, from sight to touch to taste (perhaps even sound!). The resulting spaces — lush and transporting — are uniquely Moyer’s own.Moyer’s work has been exhibited throughout the US and Europe. Her paintings were featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial. Previous museum shows include a traveling survey, Carrie Moyer: Pirate Jenny, that originated at the Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs, NY; and Interstellar, at the Worcester Art Museum, MA (2012). Between 1991-2008, Moyer and photographer Sue Schaffner collaborated as Dyke Action Machine!, a public art project that humorously dissected mainstream advertising through the insertion of lesbian imagery. Moyer’s writing has appeared in periodicals such as Art in America, Artforum, the Brooklyn Rail and monographs on Louise Fishman and Nancy Grossman. She has received awards from the Guggenheim and Joan Mitchell Foundations, Anonymous Was a Woman, and Creative Capital among others. Moyer attended Pratt Institute (BFA), Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College (MFA) and the Skowhegan School of Art. She is of the Director of MFA Program in Studio Art at Hunter College. Moyer is represented by DC Moore Gallery in New York City. The collaborative exhibition mentioned in the interview can be explored through this link to the Portland Museum. Carrie Moyer, “Fan Dance at the Golden Nugget,” 2017. Acrylic, glitter on canvas. sent $$$ this week to Moments Co-op in oakland.instagram / twitter / gofundme“On July 30th, Wolfman Books closed its doors at 410 13th Street for the last time. Days before, several former staff members, collectively known as Wolfemme+Them, gathered together to say goodbye to the space. But as we burned candles and recounted memories of the community we fostered during the store’s lifespan, we found ourselves asking: what if 410 13th Street didn’t have to stay closed? What if downtown Oakland had a truly BIPOC-led community center? We shared our dreams of a space full of books by Black, Indigenous, brown, queer, trans, revolutionary, local, and youth writers; a space for literary events where young and emerging writers can share the stage with their mentors, a space for poets and musicians to co-conspire with community organizers; a space for a zine library, a gallery and artist studios; a space for education and activism, plus herbal medicine, free groceries, and resource distribution; a space that prioritizes uplifting and supporting Black folks born and raised in Oakland and the Ohlone people whose stolen land we live on; a space that can shift and grow, ever-expanding to center BIPOC and QTPOC needs, wants, visions, and dreams. With this goal in mind, the collective formerly known as Wolfemme+Them has officially secured the lease to 410 13th Street. We are launching as a brand new cooperatively run community center for creative collaboration and organizing. We believe it is absolutely vital as BIPOC and QTPOC that we have a physical space for connecting, building, dreaming, and learning. But in a world still ravaged by racial capitalism-and particularly as BIPOC and QTPOC artists / arts administrators / service workers / organizers who are currently unemployed or underemployed due to COVID-19-we must rely on our communities for financial support to fund the startup costs of opening this space.”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)TEENANGER “Just Drop It” TeenagerPost Moves “With You, on Big Leaf Mountain” Boogie Night at the Edge of TownSirena Victima “Teach Me” To You and YoursLate Bloom “Stay In Bed” NO BODYTeen Spaceship “Half a Hundred” s/tAnna Altman “White Horse” FREIGHTLINERGirl Ray “Monday Tuesday” Earl GreyDirt Devil “Haunter” Dirt DevilGender Work “radical dust (feat. rob'n delaine)” disruptionSnow Roller “Sly” XXLDecisions “COMMAND V” PlagiarismMud On My Bra “Tarantula Man” Demo #2Katie Ellen “TV Dreams” Cowgirl BluesAmor en la isla “Dientes” Playa CrocanteVital Idles “My Sentiments” My Sentiments / The Garden 7"Antelope “Goggles” S/TBreak Time “Oh Alice” Demo(n)Brumes “Unwavering Light” AfterglowMoving Maps “eyes to meet” eyes to meetSlaughter Beach, Dog “Glowing” Motorcycle.jpgDEHD “End” FIRE OF LOVEAmy O “Untouchable Heart” ElasticPoorage “Crumber Nuncher” 1/LF & HA/2Wendy Eisenberg “my mother draws maps - 10/4/15, 1:09 PM” collected early works
With special guest Matt Kato (formerly of Game Informer), Matt Helgeson takes a look at two women-led albums: Girl Ray’s shimmery debut “Earl Grey” and Lydia Loveless’s “Real”. With songwriting sensibilities well beyond their years, both acts seem somewhat out of time – “Earl Grey” is a 2017 record that could’ve come out fifty years earlier, while Loveless’s full country twang is tragically suited to the real-life heartbreak she recounts on “Real” (which she recorded with her then-husband, 20 years her senior, while their marriage was falling apart. Ouch.). Kato sticks around for some dynamite community questions, like chiptune vs. orchestral game music, video game references in popular music, and covers that sold us on the original song. It's a couple weeks later than I wanted, but Random Old Records is finally back! EPISODE #74 is a little bit messy. It's silly and sad, loud and soft, joyous and tense, goofy and awkward. Some of the transitions are a bit rough. There's some stuff here that sounds a little out-of-place if you're expecting hard-edged garage punk. Don't let all of that scare you off though, it's still loaded with jams!#74 kicks off with a set of classic Britpop, finishing up a with fresh track from Lush/Elastica/Moose supergroup Piroshka, then careens from electronic pop by Yumi Zouma to long-awaited new music from Australian punks UV Race, to blistering rage from Control Top, to sweet piano pop from Girl Ray, to old-school Random Old Records favorites like People's Temple and Teledrime, to a whole bunch more new and old rock n' roll. It's one of the most frantic and emotional episodes I've ever done, so enjoy the ride!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! More classic episodes from the past ten years are being added to the feed as well, so check those out as well. You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Watch this space next month for the another episode of Random Old Records. In this charmingly amateur debut episode, my ex-colleague Jof tries to get me to piss off because I keep calling him while he's at work, I talk a bit about how utterly shit it is to lose your job and sit at home alone all day, and then I interview Poppy and Iris from Girl Ray about their year gone by and play their excellent Christmas single, I Wish I Was Giving You A Gift This Christmas. Big shout out to Kyle Platts for the logo, Wesley Gonzalez for the jingles, Jof for the mentoring and John for the quality control.
