On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Cameron Bennett. Cameron is a recent graduate from Lyman Briggs College who majored in genomics and molecular genetics and human biology. Since her sophomore year at MSU, Cameron has done research with the Braasch lab in the Department of Integrative Biology studying the function of duplicated endothelin genes unique to a group of fish called teleosts. The endothelin gene family she studies has an important role in controlling what type of cells that neural crest cells become during early development. Neural crest cells are special as they are unique to vertebrates like fish and humans and they can become many tissues, including heart, pigment cells, enteric (gut) nerve cells, and parts of the skeleton making up the head and face. Over the course of evolution, vertebrates underwent two whole-genome duplication events. The endothelin system consists of three proteins in most vertebrates: Edn1, Edn2, and Edn3. In contrast, following a third whole-genome duplication, the endothelin system in teleost fish consists of six proteins: Edn1, Edn2a, Edn2b, Edn3a, Edn3b, and Edn4. Not only are there extra copies of Edn2 and Edn3 in this fish group, but the presence of an additional unique protein, Edn4. Currently, the function of most Edn proteins remains a mystery. Cameron's research project aims to better understand the developmental role of the Edn proteins in the teleost fish zebrafish, Danio rerio. She has been working on this by developing lines of zebrafish with combinations of mutations across the endothelin gene family using the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technique. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. The party continues their investigation within the small fishing village of Illmarsh. They soon begin to see shades of the past, as they come to learn how unwelcoming the people are. An impromptu meeting with the mayor of this mysterious village might be what the group needs to point them in the right direction.
Why “Administrative Static”? In the podcast's pilot episode, hosts Mark Chenoweth and John (“Vec”) Vecchione of the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), a nonpartisan civil rights group, explain what to expect from this irreverent new legal affairs podcast. Administrative Static will expose the unlawful side of administrative power, decry federal and state agency abuses of your civil liberties, and discuss the best legal arguments for fighting back. They also break down what kinds of segments you can expect from the show moving forward. Something's Fishy in the Gulf NCLA has filed a class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (“NOAA”), and the National Marine Fisheries Service for imposing an unlawful and unconstitutional 24-hour GPS surveillance regime without a warrant against the fishing industry. These agencies are trying to force charter boats and companies that take customers fishing and sightseeing in the Gulf of Mexico to purchase a vessel monitoring system. Federal agencies will use the VMS tracking devices to monitor boats' movements and whereabouts on the water, even when they are not using their federal permits to fish. John Vecchione explains why the agencies have overreached. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Something’s Fishy on the Golf Course Recently, during the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida, an osprey swooped down and grabbed a fish out of a water hazard and began to fly away. But as they say in golf, the bird foozled and dropped the fish on the grass in the middle of the course. TV cameras captured the moment when a fan ran out onto the green, grabbed the fish and returned it to the water. The osprey is the only hawk species in North America with an almost exclusive diet of live fish. The osprey has nostrils that can be closed, which allows it to dive 3 feet down into the water to capture its prey. It also has an outer toe that can be angled backwards to better grasp fish. Whats a word for having toes that point both forward and backward? Zygodactyl. Coincidentally some of the first golf balls were made of leather pouches packed tightly with feathers.

The New York State Police have not only withheld critical information but they may have also intentionally circulated misleading sketches of the suspect in Richard's Aderson's homicide to further divert the public from learning the true identity of the killer. In this episode, we conclude our two part examination of the police investigation and determine whether the police have remained complicit in concealing the truth. Something's Fishy In America We are all being played against one another! It must stop. If we continue on this way we will end in a place that will not be good for any of us. We are all being brainwashed, programmed, turned against one another. We no longer demand facts or proof.. we just react emotionally to what we are told. Our minds and emotions are not being controlled by us but by media, government & groups of people who don't care one wit for us. We MUST awaken from our slumber & face this nightmare head on while there is still time to move in another direction. https://www.patreon.com/DonnaDeVane Listen at www.AwakenedRadio.net

Is Erich Abetz trawlin' out of control? Even if not, this yarn is legit. SOME NOTES: Further contextualising Abetz in this story are his swift attacks on Greenpeace Australia and environmentalists in general, which he made almost immediately after stepping into the office of ‘Special Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation’ for the Howard Cabinet in 2006. Was it because he accurately foresaw such activists as potential impediments to his future supertrawler conspiracy with Parlevliet and Van Der Plast? I think I said on the recording that Abetz invented his role as Special Minister - THIS IS FALSE. It is true however, that he was the last to hold that office, as it was mysteriously abolished after his occupation. Could it be though, that he engineered the closure of the department in order to grant himself permanent title of ‘most recent Fisheries Minister’… whereby appointing himself as undisputed chief parliamentary advisor to any future government on all things fishing? Such circumstances would surely enable legal flexibility for any corporation with which he was associated? There are a lot of potentially nefarious loose ends about this story and nothing seems out of the question. I would like to make it abundantly clear that I'm not making any official allegations but it is in my view an inarguably compelling narrative which appears yet unresolved. www.everydaygreen.org

How do you know you're actually getting the fish you want?Fake foods are foods that contain something other than what you think you’re buying; a bait-and-switch of ingredients. The less recognizable a food is to the eye, the easier it is to be fraudulent. Can you tell the difference between filets of whitefish? You may be buying farmed tilapia when you believe you’re buying red snapper. The quality of our food has become adulterated by the current food pathways. There is now opportunity for people to falsely market foods. Look for the seal from the Marine Stewardship Council (a fish in the shape of a checkmark) for wild caught seafood to be sure you’re buying what’s promised.Listen in as Larry Olmsted dishes on how to know you're getting the fish you think you're buying.
