"Gilligan's Island" is a sitcom that aired on CBS from 1964-1967. The show follows the comedic adventures of seven castaways who become stranded on a deserted island after a tropical storm wrecks their boat, the S.S. Minnow. Much of the show's humor is driven from the contrast between the characters' personalities and their adaptation (or lack thereof) to island life. Although it was originally met with mixed reviews from critics, Gilligan's Island gained a massive fan following through syndication, becoming a pop culture icon. Its characters and theme song became instantly recognizable. Does this classic hold up or is this one better lost at sea? Listen as the S1E1 boys deep dive the show's pilot episode, "Two on a Raft". As we record this episode, a prison break is actively unfolding at the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans. Ten inmates made a dramatic escape through a hole behind a toilet, sparking questions about security lapses. Some have already been recaptured, but others are still at large. You can follow the ongoing developments of this current escape here. But while we're following this real-time event, we're also diving into some of the most daring (and sometimes outlandish) prison break stories in history. From attempted escapes that didn't quite work out, to prisoners who put their creativity to the test in ways we never imagined, join us as we explore these wild, yet somewhat relatable, escapes. It's a tale of attempted freedom, some questionable planning, and a few lessons on why you should probably leave it to the professionals when it comes to breaking out of jail. #736 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/736  Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors    Welcome to the very first episode of CJ's Reel Southern Podcast! This podcast is all about one thing—trophy fishing. Whether it's brown trout, smallmouth, stripers, or even musky, we're diving deep into the tactics, flies, and mindset it takes to target big fish. To kick things off, Chad Johnson is joined by Alex Lafkas from Michigan—a longtime streamer junkie and one of the fishiest guys I know. They swap stories about their early days figuring out the White River, compare notes on streamer retrieves, fly patterns, and how to read fish behavior. Plus, you'll hear a quick monthly update from Morgan Guss of Diamond State Fly Shop on what to look for in the Ozarks this time of year. If you love chasing big fish and geeking out on gear and techniques, you're in the right place. Let's get into it. Episode Chapters with Chad Johnson and Alex Lafkas on Streamers from Michigan to Arkansas Fishing the Ozarks: March Update with Morgan Guss March is a big transition month for fishing in the Ozarks. Water levels fluctuate, bringing both challenges and opportunities. Streamer fishing can be hot, especially near the dam during shad kills. Minnow patterns remain a solid bet throughout the river. On the lakes, stripers, largemouth, and crappie start moving as the water warms. Whether you're fishing the rivers or the reservoirs, now's the time to get out and find some big fish. Streamer fishing for big browns has deep roots in Michigan, but it has evolved in places like Arkansas' White River. Alex Lafkas shares how adapting to different water conditions is key. In Michigan, extreme seasonal shifts change fish behavior, while Arkansas' tailwaters stay within a smaller temperature range. This means retrieves, fly selection, and feeding patterns vary between the two regions. Timing also plays a huge role—understanding when and where the biggest fish move makes all the difference. Whether you're chasing trophy trout up north or in the Ozarks, learning how to read the water is the secret to success. Feeding vs. Aggression: Understanding the Brown Trout Bite When streamer fishing for big browns, knowing the difference between a feeding bite and an aggression bite is key. Smaller flies, like sculpins and minnow patterns, work best when fish are actively feeding. But when targeting trophy fish, upsizing to seven or eight-inch streamers can trigger an aggressive reaction. These big fish aren't always hungry, but they will strike to defend their territory. In Michigan and Arkansas, seasonal changes and water conditions affect how trout react. During winter and early spring, minnows and sculpins are prime food sources. As water warms, trout shift to eating crayfish and hoppers. Understanding these seasonal patterns helps anglers choose the right fly and increase their chances of hooking a trophy brown. The Power of Water Temperature in Fly Fishing Water temperature affects more than just whether fish are active—it helps determine what they eat. Instead of just thinking about if it's too hot or too cold to fish, anglers should use temperature to decide on fly selection and approach. Cold Water (Winter & Early Spring): Minnow and sculpin patterns work best. Warming Water (Late Spring & Summer): Trout key in on crayfish and larger prey. 50-Degree Sweet Spot: Brown trout tend to jump more when water hits 50°F. The Power of the Pause in Streamer Fishing When fishing streamers for big brown trout, knowing when to pause can make all the difference. Brown trout naturally feed in the drift, meaning they often strike when the fly stops moving. If you don't give them that chance, you're missing fish. A long pause lets the fly hang in the water, making it look like an easy meal. Fast retrieves can work in shallow water but should still include pauses. A trout that follows five feet behind the fly isn't likely to eat—focus on the ones that charge in. The key takeaway? Don't overwork the fly. If a fish is committed, let it eat! Reading the Fish: How Body Language Can Make or Break Your Catch One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is focusing too much on their fly and not enough on the fish. Trout will tell you what they want if you pay attention. A fish that follows but doesn't eat may need a different angle, speed, or presentation. Instead of just changing flies, try adjusting your retrieve or adding weight. Watch their behavior – If a trout is tracking your fly but hesitates, try a head-first approach. Use the right depth – Fish will rarely rise far to eat, but they will crush a fly that drifts naturally into their zone. Stick with what's working – If one color or pattern has been producing, keep it in the mix, even when the bite slows. Big fish aren't just about luck—they're about reading the water, adjusting, and making the right move at the right time. Chasing the Bite: Why Big Fish and Tough Days Are Worth It Streamer fishing isn't about numbers—it's about the chase. The goal isn't to catch the most fish, but to land the one that makes your whole day. Big browns, like trophy bass or muskies, take patience and persistence. The bite windows are short, the effort is high, but the reward is unforgettable. Match the fly to the conditions – Olive and white is a staple, but don't ignore subtle shifts in water color and light. Read the fish – Watch their body language and adjust your retrieve. A following fish isn't always a feeding fish. Stick to your game – Whether it's throwing big streamers, chasing a trophy, or dialing in a new technique, fish the way that excites you. The One Thing Most Anglers Get Wrong Want to fish big streamers? Get your casting right first. Alex sees it all the time—anglers spend thousands on a guided trip but never put in the time to practice casting. A solid double haul and accurate placement can make or break your day. Tight loops matter – A sloppy cast won't get the job done with big flies. Backhand casts are key – Keep those heavy streamers away from your guide's head. Practice before your trip – A little time on the lawn or a local pond can save you frustration on the water. A simple fix? Take a casting lesson. Spend an hour dialing in your cast, and you'll get way more out of your next trip. Connect with Alex & Chad Johnson If you're looking to book a trip in Michigan or Arkansas, Alex takes new clients when available—just email him at alex@alflyfishing.com. For guided trips in the Ozarks, Chad Johnson is booking trips through CJ's White River Outfitter. Whether you're after big browns or smallmouth, he and his team have you covered. Video version - Career Flexibility in Cardiology https://youtu.be/ygNH6fcQ5ek Quoatables - Career Flexibility in Cardiology “You have to learn to live with ambivalence. You can't do everything. You can't do everything all at one time” “One of the most important things the College is behind and pushing, is that competency-based evaluation is what should be used in fellowship rather than this sort of cookie cutter approach where you have to do these many months of echo and this much of cath lab. So, I think flexibility moving from volume to competency is one push.” “Fellowship is daunting, and internal medicine residency is too, but I think culture is how we feel every day. And I think the more we increase flexibility the more that culture is going to shift. Notes - Career Flexibility in Cardiology Process of developing ACC Health Policy Statements These documents address issues that require ACC influence and usually involve a variety of institutions, governing bodies, and other stakeholders. ACC comes to an agreement on how they will approach this topic and shares it broadly. Most of the existing ACC health policy statements are disease-based instead of profession-based. The ACC Career Flexibility statement grew out of the diversity, equity, and inclusion task force, which is a standing committee. A variety of authors are included in health policy statements to reflect the perspectives of many different interest groups. All policy statements, including the one about career flexibility, are available online on JACC.org 1 Major Components of the ACC Career Flexibility Health Policy Statement There are 18 principles that highlight the most important aspects regarding career flexibility in cardiology.2 Flexibility allows for deceleration (decrease in work hours, responsibilities, etc.) and acceleration based on the needs of the physician. For example, during childbearing and rearing time periods, there could be a deceleration, which could accelerate when parenthood responsibilities have decreased. It does not only need to be based around parenting; physicians who are not parents also desire flexibility and enjoy spending time on activities other than their careers. These needs will be unique for each person.

This episode looks at “Law Films You Won't Want to Miss,” a recent list of "the most captivating legal themed movies," published in U.S. News and World Report.  Which movies are on the list? Which didn't make the cut? And what does the list tell us about “law movies”—and of great law movies? One film on the list may be something of a surprise: Miracle on 34th Street (1947) written and directed by George Seaton, from a story by Valentine Davies. In this Christmas holiday classic, the events director of Macy's Department Store in NYC, Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) hires an old man named Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn, who won an Oscar as best supporting actor) to serve as Macy's Santa Clause after the prior Santa is fired for being a drunk. Kringle not only closely resembles Santa Clause but believes he is Santa. Kringle is welcomed into Doris's home and makes a favorable impression on Doris's daughter Susan (Natalie Wood).  Kringle also makes an impression at work. He advises one customer to go to another store when Macy's can't fulfill her son's request for a particular toy instead of trying to sell her something else. This turns out to be a public relations stroke of genius, demonstrating Macy's concern for and loyalty to its customers. But Kringle's success at Macy's doesn't last. He gets into a dispute  with another employee who insists Kringle be fired and put into a mental hospital. A civil commitment hearing takes place, where the question centers on whether Kringle's belief that he is Santa Clause shows he is insane. Miracle on 34th Street raises timeless questions how law should treat beliefs.  I'm joined by Ashley Merryman, the author of the list, “Law Films You Won't Want to Miss.”Timestamps:0:00     Introduction4:21     The top law movies5:16     What makes a great law movie9:19     Witness for the Prosecution and other favorites16:16   Erin Brockovich and why great law movies aren't always courtroom dramas22:54   Some also-rans29:45   Why Miracle on 34th Street made the list31:53   A take on how politics informs courts and trials35:34   Proving Santa Claus through a federal postal regulation39:47   The legal realism of Miracle on 34th Street41:40   When holiday movies were released in the spring45:34   When courts are the arbiter of beliefs 51:04   Fun facts in compiling the best law movies list57:29   Introducing the new Q & A segmentFurther reading:Davis, Kevin, "The 25 Greatest Legal Movies: Expanding the Boundaries," ABA Journal (Aug. 2018) Merryman, Ashley, “Law Films You Won't Want to Miss,” U.S. News & World Report  (Feb. 1, 2024)Minnow, Nell, “An Idea Is a Greater Monument than a Cathedral: Deciding How We Know What We Know in ‘Inherit the Wind,'” 30 U.S.F. A Word With You

You might just remember turning your television on and there would be Gilligan's Island. Maybe, you can even hear the theme song playing in your brain. It was a big hit when it first came out. Now, here's Gilligan, who's the terminally stupid first mate of the S.S. Minnow. There's the millionaire, his wife (you're probably thinking of the song now if you can go back that far), the professor, the movie star... OK, you know, the characters are pretty well-known. The plot was very simply summed up in the theme song. These people went out on the S.S. Minnow for a three-hour tour. The storm blew them into some unknown island where they were stranded until the series finally ended years later. Some three-hour tour, huh? I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Ending Up Where You Never Wanted to Go." By the way, what is the Gilligan Syndrome? Well, it's going farther than you wanted to; staying longer than you planned to. It might be happening to you right now. Jesus told us about a young man it happened to many years ago; our word for today from the Word of God in Luke 15, beginning in verse 13. It's after this man has asked his dad for the family inheritance that's coming to him. While his dad's still alive. "Not long after that," the Bible says, "the younger son got together all he had, went off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' So he got up and went to his father." He was just going for a fling on the wild side, just a three-hour tour. He almost never made it back. What was supposed to bring him pleasure and happiness did for just a little while. Ultimately it left him stranded on this spiritual island all by himself. "He squandered his wealth," Jesus said. In other words, he wasted what he'd been given. Have you done that? He spent everything he had, it says. He was alone except for the pigs. The Bible says, "The way of a transgressor is hard." It always is - sooner or later. Except it's sin that carries us to a place that's hard to get back from. Here's the ugly truth about sin: it will always take you farther than you wanted to go, it will keep you longer than you planned to stay, and it will cost you more than you ever thought you'd pay. And, maybe you've seen that already. And the bill has come. If it hasn't, it will. Maybe, you're listening and you say, "That's all happened to me." Or maybe you're just starting down a sin road that looks exciting, and profitable, and desirable, and you think it will be just a three-hour tour. Sin never is. Listen to God's statement in James 1:15, "After desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." It will take you where you never meant to go. If you feel like you're just too far away to ever get back, you can get back the same way the Prodigal Son did, but only that way. It says he "got up and went to his father." It's time for you to run to God instead of running from Him any longer. You say, "He'll never take me." Look, that's why Jesus told this story, to let you know that God is waiting for you to come into His waiting arms. It says "His father saw him. He ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." God proved He wants you home with Him by sending His Son to die for your very rebellion against Him. For all that you've wasted with your sin, He says come home to Me. He's saying it to your heart right now as you listen to this. Do you want to get home? Would you tell Him today, "Jesus, I believe some of the sin you died for was mine. I am yours as of today." I'd love to share more information with you at our website ANewStory.com. God will come running to you because of what Jesus did on the cross for you. Haven't you been gone from God long enough? It's time to come home.
