Join us on a journey through one of history's most harrowing natural disasters in this episode of The Crux, led by our host Julie Henningson. Picture yourself amidst the ordinary rhythms of life, navigating through your day on a rainy afternoon, when suddenly, a cataclysmic force interrupts the tranquility. In 1889, in the heart of Pennsylvania, the South Fork Dam burst, and what followed was a monstrous wall of water, holding within it 3.8 billion gallons, surged forth with terrifying speed for the towns below. But this was not just water; it was a relentless force of nature, carrying along with it a deadly payload of buildings, livestock, and debris. Its origins traced back to the Cambria Ironworks, where it amassed a deadly arsenal of barbed wire and railroad cars before hurtling towards unsuspecting communities. At 40 miles per hour, there was no escape from its wrath. Residents were thrust into a nightmare scenario, facing the impossible task of outrunning a deluge of biblical proportions. The sheer force of the flood tore through the landscape, ripping the very topsoil from the earth as it swept everything in its path with the unstoppable ferocity only moving water can possess. In today's episode, we delve into the chilling details of the Great Johnstown Flood, a calamity etched into the annals of history as a stark reminder of nature's awesome power and humanity's vulnerability in the face of its fury. Tune in as we uncover the tragic events and explore the profound impact this disaster had on the lives of those caught in its merciless grip.
National Park Ranger Doug Bosley's existence hinges on a few dangerous seconds in the life of his great-great grandfather, William Pickerill. On May 31, 1889, Pickerill worked as a telegraph operator down the valley from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Before it was washed away by the flood, his telegraph office relayed warnings about the impending collapse of the South Fork Dam. Today, Ranger Bosley joins host Mike Corey to talk about how William Pickerill survived, and how the Johnstown Flood National Memorial remembers those who didn't. Bosley also shares his own recollections of the Johnstown flood of 1977.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Despite the efforts of engineer John Parke, the South Fork Dam does break. The ensuing flash flood sweeps up a vast, moving wall of debris: mud, rocks, trees, fragments of bridges and smashed-up houses. Residents in Johnstown, including Reverend H.L. Chapman and his family, have mere seconds to flee to higher ground as the floodwaters and debris crash into their homes. The lucky ones find themselves clinging to rooftops amid the raging waters, fighting to survive.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Engineer John Parke and a team of workers furiously shovel dirt, trying to shore up the South Fork Dam as it threatens to overflow, amid torrential rains. Parke knows these efforts are their only chance of preventing a terrible flood. He decides he has to warn the towns in the river valley of the imminent danger — but it's a warning they've heard too many times in the past to take seriously. It's May, 30th 1889, and the South Fork Dam in Western Pennsylvania is in danger. After nearly a month of hard rain, eight inches have fallen in one day, filling the lake behind the dam to capacity. And the dam's owners, the South Fork Hunting and Fishing Club, have cut corners in repairing and maintaining it. It's threatening to break, which would unleash 20 million tons of water on the people in the valley below, including everyone living in the steel city of Johnstown. In the meantime, we're revisiting some of our favorite episodes. In this episode of Third Pod from the Sun, Neil Coleman, a professional geologist who resides just outside of Johnstown and teaches geophysics part time at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, describes how a confluence of greed, poor engineering decisions, and hydrology led to one of the most catastrophic disasters in American history.Coleman also delves into the formal investigation of the event by American Society of Civil Engineers that was subsequently buried, the cast of characters – including the leading steel and rail industrialists of the era – who were involved, the lack of accountability for the victims – save for a re-coop on the loss of a few barrels of whiskey, and the impact on the region that echoes to this day. He also provides insight into how the flood serves as a case study for current day hydrologists and engineers hoping to prevent, respond to, and investigate current and future flooding events. This episode was produced and mixed by Shane M Hanlon. RIGHT AT THE GATES OF HELLHADES PART 40 Over 100 MILLION GROPE IN DEEP DARKNESS 12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. 13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. 14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Joel 3 PREEMPTOR The enemy takes advantage of our weakness for idolatry and brings many opportunities for idol worship our way. He uses the media, which is controlled by the Antichrist spirit, to draw attention to and glorify these heaven gods of self gratification and sin. Most people, including Christians, watch several hours of television each day where beautiful people act out fictional stories in which they triumph over every obstacle or tragedy without prayer or the help of God. Eventually, over time, many Christians who possibly spend a short devotional time with God every morning but spend their entire evening watching TV, lose interest in God. Many times it isn't until some great tragedy comes into our life that we get back into a more sincere pursuit of God. Then, alas, when things start going well again, we often fall back into our lax spiritual life and God needs to permit another difficulty to come our way to draw us back again. Our verse states that these heathen gods will be “acknowledged and increased with glory” and that he (the Antichrist in my interpretation) will “cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.” There is no doubt that our hearts and minds are being seduced towards evil by the movies and TV programs we watch and the music we listen to. Satanic cults believe that good is evil and evil is good. Subtly we find ourselves accepting this in the carefully crafted stories and songs that exalt sin. If you take time to notice, most movies have something immoral in them that has nothing to do with the storyline. We watch these movies anyway. Many songs played in our stores and offices, to say nothing of the radio stations broadcasting into homes and automobiles, are glorifying adultery. Movie stars and recording artists become people's gods and they are so acknowledged and glorified that their sinful ways, once considered taboo, have become something to be emulated. This causes these false gods to rule over many people. Romans 6:16 states, “Don't you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master?” (NLT) This is how the Antichrist spirit is able to rule over people and even overtake a nation. The more we engage in sin, the 97 From THE LIVE RAGGED EDGE RADIO BROADCAST/SHATTER LIVE TV WEBINAR RUSS DIZDAR © more we become enslaved by it. This leads us to 2 Thes 2:7-12 that I believe describes where we are in our nation at this time: For this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way. Then the man of lawlessness will be revealed whom the Lord Jesus will consume with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. This evil man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles He will use every kind of wicked deception to fool those who are on their way to destruction because they refuse to believe the truth that would save them. So God will send great deception upon them, and they will believe all these lies. Then they will be condemned for not believing the truth and for enjoying the evil they do. Clark, Patricia. Spiritual Warfare in Satanic Ritual Abuse: Exposing the Hidden Demonic Schemes of SRA (pp. 194-195). Kindle Edition. Dan 11:17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him. There is a perpetually higher price to be paid if one wants to continue getting the Devil's powers. What worked last week won't work this week. If killing a rabbit brought power last week, one must kill two rabbits this week to get the same amount of power so to speak. So far we have only talked about power gained through abuse, but there also must be death in their rituals. After the living creature is killed, everyone in attendance at the ritual must eat part of the animal's flesh and drink its blood. At some point the Devil is not satisfied with the death of an animal or multiple animals and wants a human sacrifice. It is often the baby of one of the cult members that gets sacrificed. It is not unusual for drugs to be administered to the mother causing premature birth so the child can be sacrificed before the pregnancy is as noticeable as it would be in the last few weeks. In this verse we don't see human sacrifice but we do see the demons demanding this perpetrator do more if he is to get the power he needs to get out of his predicament. The demon wants to expand his kingdom (enter with the strength of his whole kingdom). The demon is not satisfied that he has completely taken over the perpetrator's soul. He wants to expand his kingdom to those innocent persons around the perpetrator (and upright ones with him). The demon will see to it that circumstances arise such that the perpetrator will have the opportunity to sexually abuse an innocent baby or child, in this case a little girl (and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her). The Hebrew word for “corrupting” is frequently used by the prophets in the sense of “to corrupt morally.” This little girl will not choose to serve Satan as this perpetrator does (but she shall not stand on his side). She won't want to have anything to do with this abusive man (neither be for him). Clark, Patricia. Spiritual Warfare in Satanic Ritual Abuse: Exposing the Hidden Demonic Schemes of SRA (pp. 83-84). Kindle Edition. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHEN THE RESTRAINER STOPS RESTRAINING THE RAIN KEPT POURING DOWN. It had been days since south-central Pennsylvania had seen the sun. The trickles ran down hills, forming streams that turned into small rivers, all looking for pools where the water could stop its journey and accumulate. One of those collection pools was Lake Conemaugh—a reservoir created when the South Fork Dam was built in the mid-nineteenth century. Now, decades later, the poor engineering of the dam was about to reveal itself in a disastrous way. On May 31, 1889, the constant downpour finally prevailed. The South Fork Dam burst, sending 3.8 billion gallons of water crashing down the mountain toward unsuspecting Johnstown, Pennsylvania. As the water rushed, it picked up debris—trees, cabins, railroad cars. It also swept up victims as it tore through helpless small towns—South Fork, Mineral Point, and East Conemaugh. When the flood finally reached Johnstown some 57 minutes later, the wall of water and wreckage was 35 feet high and travelling at 40 miles per hour. The destruction was unimaginable. A reported 2,209 people lost their lives that day, including 99 entire families wiped off the face of the earth.1 All that potential for destruction had been there for years, but it had been restrained by the dam. Once 98 From THE LIVE RAGGED EDGE RADIO BROADCAST/SHATTER LIVE TV WEBINAR RUSS DIZDAR © the restrainer was removed, devastation followed. This is the very picture that Paul presents in 2 Thessalonians 2. There is a restrainer in place right now, held secure by the Lord. But it will not remain there forever. A time is coming when the restrainer will be removed. On that day, people had better run for high ground, because devastation is about to pour down THE COMING APOSTASY Great confusion surrounds Paul's words in 2 Thessalonians 2. There is little doubt that he is talking about the end times and the coming of the Antichrist. It's the timing of the passage's events that creates the debate. The origin of the uncertainty resides less in Paul's words than in how people read them. Many, however, don't read as far as they should. Paul began, “Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come” (verses 1-2). A rumor was spreading, saying that Christ had returned, and the Thessalonians had somehow been left behind. Paul told them, “Don't worry, folks. It's all fake news.” He encouraged them not to panic or rush to conclusions. There is an order of events that must occur before the return of Christ. The day is approaching, but it's not here yet. Up to this point, everyone seems to agree on what is said in the passage. The problem comes when some people read just one more verse, then stop. This premature halt leaves them with a thoroughly wrong conclusion. Paul wrote, “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first” (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Jesus will not return until there is a falling away. The Greek word here is apostasia, which gives us the English word apostasy. There are some who say that this word refers to the rapture, which makes no sense linguistically or logically. …………… Something is restraining, and something is being restrained. That's the first time this is mentioned. Let's read on: “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed” (verses 7-8). Notice the timing in these verses. Lawlessness is already at work. This is happening in the present time. The restraining one is now restraining and will continue to do so. However, at some point in the future, that restrainer will be removed, and the restraining will end. Once the restraining ends, the Antichrist will be revealed. That's why we've got to read the whole passage. The best way to study the Bible is to let the Bible explain the Bible. Paul made it clear that there is one reason the Antichrist is not being revealed right this very moment: The restrainer has not yet been removed. Tsarfati, Amir. The Day Approaching: An Israeli's Message of Warning and Hope for the Last Days (pp. 127- 131). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

In this episode of The Spark File, Susan Blackwell and Laura Camien discuss a dark spark -- the legacy of Larry Nassar and the powerful, inspiring army of survivors and champions who told their stories, including Katelyn Ohashi, Lindsey Smith, Valorie Kondos Field, Rachael Denhollander and Kate Wells. They also look beneath the surface of Reservoir Noir and the spark-filled stories of towns that drowned. From Andrew Carnegie's South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club and the South Fork Dam causing the tragic flooding of Johnstown, Pennsylvania to the American Corp of Engineers intentionally flooding towns such as Willow Grove, Tennessee in order to form Dale Hollow Lake.PLEASE NOTE: This episode of The Spark File podcasts contains mature themes (physical abuse, sexual abuse, suicide, body issues). You Asked, We Answered! Transcript of the podcast Hello! It’s Payton Filippone here. I am a student at Penn State Brandywine and today I will be talking about flooding. I will be answering the question: “what causes floods?” Flooding is an important topic to understand because it affects many communities around the world every year. Let’s begin by learning what a flood really is. The National Severe Storms Laboratory, or NSSL, says that a flood is “an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry”. [1] National Geographic adds that flooding happens when normally dry land is “soaked” by an abundance of water. [2] Australian Government.com, which comes from Australia which is a country that has to deal with flooding just as much as the United States, says that flooding can be defined as “the covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or been released from the natural confines of any lake, or any river, creek or other natural watercourse.” [3] Putting all of these definitions together can lead us to believe that flooding is when land that is normally dry is covered in extremely large amounts of water. But what causes this type of event to occur? Well, there are numerous answers to this burning question. One extremely common cause of flooding is heavy rainfall. This happens when a natural and sizeable body of water is overflowing due to added water from rain. [4] According to the authors at the United States Geological Survey, flooding can be caused by “prolonged rainfall over several days, intense water over a short period of time, or a debris jam causes a river or stream to overflow and flood the surrounding area.” [5] As you can see, flooding can occur even without tremendous amounts of rain. Another cause of flooding could be a break in a dam. This break could occur because of an earthquake or a poorly structured dam. For example, according to TIME Incorporated and author Kayla Webley, the South Fork Dam is a dam that is located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, it had broken open in the year eighteen eighty-nine and allowed twenty million tons of water to completely take over the town of Johnstown. Not even an hour had passed when a giant, thirty-foot barricade of water crashed down over the town. The dangerous water flowed at speeds of twenty to forty miles per hour. This catastrophe sadly killed over two thousand, two hundred people. If you would like to learn more about this tragedy, you could read a book called “Shelter from the Storm”, written by David McCullough. [6] Some of the most deadly floods around the world take place in China. China is the home of the Huang He River, otherwise known as the Yellow River. This famous body of water got its name because of the yellow colored silt that makes up a major part of the riverbed. The most deadly flood that came from this river occurred in the year nineteen thirty-one. It flooded thirty-four thousand square miles and killed between one and four million people. As if taking these lives was not enough, the flood also left eighty million people homeless. But what caused this tragedy? What started the reoccurrence of this awful destruction? Well, sometimes, the famous, yellow silt would accumulate to the point where there would be no more room in the river for the water. Silt is fine sand that is carried by water, but the water is unable to go through it. Since the water cannot go through it, silt can act as a blockage when there is too much built up in one spot. [7] Clearly, this is another natural cause of flooding. [8] Floods can affect humans and their ways of living in a variety of ways. For example, National Geographic states that floods can be extremely destructive. Objects as large as houses, trees, cars, and even bridges can be lifted up and taken away from where they belong by a powerful flood. [2] Overall today, we learned a lot about floods. We learned what a flood really is, how floods affect humans, and, most importantly, we answered the original question of “what causes floods?” I hope you have all enjoyed this podcast and that it has answered all of your questions.
