My guest this week is Greg Santucci, he is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist and the Founding Director of Power Play Pediatric Therapy in New Jersey. He has been an OT for over 20 years, and currently is a Supervisor of Occupational Therapy at Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey. Greg is certified in sensory integration and continues to maintain a caseload in the schools and outpatient sensory gyms where he works. In this episode, Greg and I discuss how many of the approaches being used with children who exhibit challenging behaviors are outdated, they are not supported by current research, and there are many adults on the autism spectrum and with related kinds of issues who have started to speak out about the trauma they experienced during these kinds of therapies when they were kids. Unfortunately, these types of approaches continue to be recommended in schools, in some therapy settings, and at home, so I'm thankful for people like Greg who are advocating for developmentally and neurologically supportive approaches that actually meet the needs of kids. Every bit of information that we learn in this world comes in through our senses. When sensory processing is efficient, we can navigate our everyday life comfortably. When someone is hypo- or hyper- sensitive to sensory input, daily experiences many of us often take for granted can become stressors, and as a result, our behavior will change. Transitions become more difficult. Focusing becomes more challenging. How someone processes sensory input is unique to each individual, so imposing our own sensory preferences on our children can lead to resistance. However, if we “think sensory” and understand our kid’s sensory preferences, we can help them feel safe, stay regulated, focus and perform at their highest level of ability.Greg Santucci is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist and the Founding Director of Power Play Pediatric Therapy. He has been an OT for over 20 years, and currently is a Supervisor of Occupational Therapy at Children’s Specialized Hospital in NJ. Greg has been lecturing national for over a decade on topics related to sensory processing, challenging behaviors and best practice in the public schools. Greg is the father of two kids and is married to a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, so he shares his toys with all three of them.Contact information:https://gregsantucci.comFacebook: Greg Santucci, Occupational TherapistInstagram: @gregsantucci

Alexandra Jackman has created “A Teen's Guide to Understanding and Communicating with People with Autism,” which encourages teenagers to understand and accept peers who have autism spectrum disorder. The film focuses on the positive aspects of autism and includes individuals on the spectrum and their families. In the video, Jackman asks middle school students and teachers “What is Autism?” She also speaks to the founder of Autism Family Times, parents of children with Autism, an Autism educator and a doctor. She highlights children of all ages w Autism and features adults as well. Her video is geared towards teens, but is relatable to all ages on the basics of how to accept and understand those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Of her film she has said "Maybe if they (middle schoolers) see someone with special needs, they won't be so afraid to talk with them. For a lot of people, if they don't understand something, they can be afraid." Also participating in the film is Adrienne Robertiello, Autism Educator at Children's Specialized Hospital and Board member of Autism Family Times with Brianna. Ms. Robertiello steers collaborative initiatives to facilitate the awareness and participation of children with ASD and their families in community settings.
