Are you worried about whether your teen is just moody or actually struggling with depression? Do you wonder how much of their emotional ups and downs are connected to digital media? In this episode of Power Your Parenting: Moms with Teens, host Colleen O'Grady sits down with Dr. Meredith Gansner, a child psychiatrist and researcher, to discuss the rising rates of teen depression in the digital age. Together, they explore how social media, online interactions, and excessive screen time contribute to adolescent mental health struggles. Dr. Gansner shares insights from her research and her new book, Teen Depression Gone Viral, highlighting how parents can recognize signs of depression, differentiate between typical teen emotions and clinical concerns, and take proactive steps to support their child's well-being. They also tackle the difficult topic of suicidal ideation, how parents can navigate these conversations, and the importance of maintaining open communication while setting digital boundaries. Dr. Meredith Gansner is an instructor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and attending child psychiatrist at Boston Children's Hospital. After completing medical school at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, she completed her psychiatry residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in child psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance. Her research explores high-risk digital media use in adolescents and managing high-risk digital media habits. She is an active member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry media committee, has written articles about mental health and digital media for The Psychiatric Times,The Boston Globe, and Slate magazine. Key takeaways from this conversation include the importance of observing your teen's level of functioning rather than just their emotions, understanding that social media is not inherently harmful but can be risky without guidance, and remembering that parents need support too—caring for yourself helps you better support your teen. With expert advice and practical strategies, this episode empowers moms to feel more prepared to guide their teens through the challenges of growing up in a digital world. Emerging research suggests that a specific type of body fat may play an important role in healthy aging and physical performance. Researchers from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School explore this topic in a recent research perspective published in Aging (Aging-US). Their work discusses new findings and emerging ideas about the role of brown adipose tissue (BAT), commonly known as brown fat. Understanding Brown Fat The human body contains different types of fat. The most common is white adipose tissue (WAT), which primarily stores excess calories. When present in large amounts, WAT contributes to health problems like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease as a result of its role in metabolic imbalance. In contrast, BAT serves a more dynamic role. Instead of storing energy, BAT burns calories to generate heat through a process called thermogenesis, powered by its high concentration of mitochondria—the energy-producing structures in cells. While BAT is abundant in newborns to help regulate body temperature, it persists in smaller amounts in adults, particularly around the neck, shoulders, and spine. According to the research perspective, titled “Brown Adipose Tissue Enhances Exercise Performance and Healthful Longevity” brown fat's role extends beyond thermoregulation. The authors suggest that BAT can significantly improve metabolic health, enhance physical performance, and promote healthful longevity. BUFFALO, NY- January 8, 2025 – A new #research perspective was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 16, Issue 22 on December 18, 2024, entitled “Brown adipose tissue enhances exercise performance and healthful longevity.” Researchers from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Dorothy E. Vatner, Jie Zhang, and Stephen F. Vatner, evaluated the role of brown adipose tissue (BAT), a special type of fat that burns calories to generate heat, in improving exercise endurance and supporting healthy aging. Unlike regular white fat, which stores energy, brown fat helps the body stay warm and boosts metabolism. According to the authors, this process may also help protect against health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This research perspective highlights key findings from multiple studies on BAT. While most studies have shown that exercise regulates BAT activation and increases BAT density, relatively few have demonstrated that BAT itself can directly increase exercise performance. One notable example involves RGS14 knockout mice, a genetically modified group known for their longer lifespan. When BAT from these mice was transplanted into regular mice, the recipients displayed improved running endurance just three days after the transplant. In contrast, brown fat from non-modified mice took much longer to produce similar improvements. These findings highlight the unique properties of BAT in enhancing physical performance. The researchers emphasized also that BAT improves blood circulation and reduces cellular stress, which may help combat age-related muscle loss, fatigue, and metabolic decline. The authors suggest that treatments designed to mimic the benefits of brown fat could lead to innovative approaches for improving energy levels, maintaining a healthy weight, and supporting heart health. “In view of the ability of BAT to mediate healthful longevity and enhance exercise performance, it is likely that a pharmaceutical analog of BAT will become a novel therapeutic modality.” In conclusion, continued research on this topic may lead to the development of promising new therapies that help older adults live more active lives while reducing the risk of chronic age-related conditions. BUFFALO, NY- July 22, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published in Oncotarget's Volume 15 on July 10, 2024, entitled, “Improved efficacy of pembrolizumab combined with soluble EphB4-albumin in HPV-negative EphrinB2 positive head neck squamous cell carcinoma.” Patients with relapsed or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) after primary local therapy have low response rates with cetuximab, systemic chemotherapy or check point inhibitor therapy. Novel combination therapies with the potential to improve outcomes for patients with HNSCC is an area of high unmet need. In this new study, researchers Alexandra Jackovich, Barbara J. Gitlitz, Justin Wayne Wong Tiu-lim, Vinay Duddalwar, Kevin George King, Anthony B. El-Khoueiry, Jacob Stephen Thomas, Denice Tsao-Wei, David I. Quinn, Parkash S. Gill, and Jorge J. Nieva from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the University of Southern California conducted a phase II single-arm clinical trial of locally advanced or metastatic HNSCC patients treated with a combination of soluble EphB4-human serum albumin (sEphB4-HSA) fusion protein and pembrolizumab after platinum-based chemotherapy with up to 2 prior lines of treatment. “sEphB4-HSA in combination with pembrolizumab has a safety profile similar to what has been observed previously with no overlapping toxicity.” The primary endpoints were safety and tolerability and the primary efficacy endpoint was overall response rate (ORR). Secondary endpoints included progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). HPV status and EphrinB2 expression were evaluated for outcome. Twenty-five patients were enrolled. Median follow up was 40.4 months (range 9.8 – 40.4). There were 6 responders (ORR 24%). There were 5 responders in the 11 HPV-negative and EphrinB2 positive patients, (ORR 45%) with 2 of these patients achieving a complete response (CR). The median PFS in HPV-negative/EphrinB2 positive patients was 3.2 months (95% CI 1.1, 7.3). Median OS in HPV-negative/EphrinB2 positive patients was 10.9 months (95% CI 2.0, 13.7). Hypertension, transaminitis and fatigue were the most common toxicities. “The combination of sEphB4-HSA and pembrolizumab has a favorable toxicity profile and favorable activity particularly among HPV-negative EphrinB2 positive patients with HNSCC.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28605 Correspondence to - Alexandra Jackovich - atj41@njms.rutgers.edu, and Jorge J. NY State lawmakers say they will renew their push to reopen a window that allows sexual assault victims more time to file their claims. This after a WNYC investigation revealed patterns of sexual abuse in Rikers Island. Also, a women's roller derby league on Long Island is joining those pushing to protect transgender athletes and suing Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman over his disputed ban. And, a man was shoved to his death in front of a subway train Monday night in East Harlem which marks the fourth murder in the transit system this year. Lastly, the CDC says New Jersey's Essex County has one of the highest rates of late-stage breast cancer and cervical cancer diagnoses in the Garden state, and outcomes are even worse for Black women. To try to reverse these alarming trends, Newark University Hospital has partnered with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School to roll out a new mobile mammogram van. WNYC's Michael Hill speaks with Dr. Susan Pories, Director of the Breast Center at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Valencia Maponya, mobile health manager for University Hospital.

A new research paper was published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 9, entitled, “Increased expression of musashi 1 on breast cancer cells has implication to understand dormancy and survival in bone marrow.” Breast cancer (BC) stem cells (CSCs) resist treatment and can exist as dormant cells in tissues such as the bone marrow (BM). Years before clinical diagnosis, BC cells (BCCs) could migrate from the primary site where the BM niche cells facilitate dedifferentiation into CSCs. Additionally, dedifferentiation could occur by cell autonomous methods. In this new study, researchers George R. Nahas, Lauren S. Sherman, Garima Sinha, Markos H. El Far, Andrew Petryna, Steven M. Munoz, Kimberly A. Silverio, Maran Shaker, Pujan Neopane, Veronica Mariotti, and Pranela Rameshwar from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School studied the role of the RNA-binding protein, Musashi I (Msi 1). They also analyzed its relationship with the T-cell inhibitory molecule programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in CSCs. “We validated the link between Msi 1 and PD-L1 in CSCs [cancer stem cells] based on significant reduction of CSCs following Msi 1 knockdown.” PD-L1 is expressed on triple negative BC and other cancers. Therefore, PD-L1 is an immune checkpoint that is a target in immune therapy for cancers. Msi 1 can support BCC growth through stabilization of oncogenic transcripts and modulation of stem cell-related gene expression. The researchers reported on a role for Msi 1 to maintain CSCs. They found that it seemed to occur by the differentiation of CSCs to more matured BCCs. This correlated with increased transition from cycling quiescence and reduced expression of stem cell-linked genes. CSCs co-expressed Msi 1 and PD-L1. Msi 1 knockdown led to a significant decrease in CSCs with undetectable PD-L1. “This study has implications for Msi 1 as a therapeutic target, in combination with [an] immune checkpoint inhibitor. Such treatment could also prevent dedifferentiation of breast cancer to CSCs, and to reverse tumor dormancy. The proposed combined treatment might be appropriate for other solid tumors.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.204620 Corresponding author - Pranela Rameshwar - rameshwa@njms.rutgers.edu Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://aging.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Faging.204620 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Aging - https://www.aging-us.com/subscribe-to-toc-alerts Keywords - aging, cancer stem cell, breast cancer, musashi 1, bone marrow, dormancy About Aging-US Launched in 2009, Aging-US publishes papers of general interest and biological significance in all fields of aging research and age-related diseases, including cancer—and now, with a special focus on COVID-19 vulnerability as an age-dependent syndrome. In 1973, through the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, women were given the right of access and privacy to abortion without federal or state-wide regulation. However, on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned this landmark ruling with the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. Now, the right to abortion care and reproductive autonomy can be regulated at a state level. However, the resounding effect is not only fear for abortion rights but also reproductive care as a whole. "Personhood laws” that define life and humanity at conception and fertilization exist in certain states, creating an implication that interweaves more discussions regarding fertility and reproductive medicine, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, management of ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, and criminalization of practitioners who facilitate such procedures. We are joined today by Dr. Serena H. Chen, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and fellowship-trained reproductive endocrinologist. She received her BS in Biology from Brown University in 1984, MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1989, and OB/GYN residency in 1992 and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship in 1995 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She stands as the Founding Partner and Medical Director of The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science (IRMS) and the Vice President of Doctors for Fertility, a physician-led organization with the mission to educate and inform policy on reproductive rights. She is also an Associate Clinical Professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and St. George's University School of Medicine. Have you ever watched videos of cute babies online and then you start getting "baby fever"? And I believe that one of the monumental moments in our elementary education years is when we start learning about the actual process of this baby fever: "sexy time." As our guest described: "romantic" and "between sheets." However, there are instances when this activity does not result in the baby that the intending people wanted. According to the NIH, in the United States alone, approximately 9% of men and 11% of women of their reproductive age have infertility problems that imbue difficulties in the conception of a baby. Is there no longer hope for these partners to build the family that they have always dreamed of? Are there possible alternatives still available to them? There is no better person to ask these questions than the expert in the reproductive field: board-certified fertility expert physician Dr. Serena H. Chen.Receiving her bachelor's degree in Biology from Brown University in 1984, attaining her medical degree from Duke University in 1988, and completing her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in 1992 where she also fulfilled her Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility fellowship in 1995, Dr. Chen now stands as a fertility specialist and reproductive endocrinologist at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and IRMS Reproductive Medicine in New Jersey. Beyond this, she also served as a clinical associate professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and St. George's University School of Medicine. With Dr. Chen's three decades of experience, we go into a deep dive into all things fertility and reproduction: the menstrual period, PCOS, infertility, miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, ovarian reserve, Anti-Müllerian hormone, egg freezing, medical surrogacy, in vitro fertilization (IVF), LGBTQ+ family planning, and safety of vaccines for pregnant people. Through all of this, Dr. Chen has a clear message to those who want to become parents: in one way or another, there is hope for you to build a healthy and happy family so you should be informed of your options so you will have no regrets.Livestream Air Date: July 14, 2021Dr. Serena H.
