"I realized something - I wasn't sad that it was all gone. I had fun making all that stuff! I would've done it anyway. And then, somehow I knew that when I woke up, all my work would really be destroyed. And that's when you showed up. I don't know how you got here...but I am glad to see you."We have all felt unfinished in one way or another - to feel so is to be human. The thesis of "The Unfinished Swan," the game that Ben and Rick discuss this week, deals with the idea of this being not only an important area of growth but one that must be embraced, for it is not a failing on who we are. Author note - this is the kind of game we made this podcast specifically to talk about, so we hope you enjoy the discussions within.PATREON: www.patreon.com/pixelprojectradio DISCORD: https://discord.gg/Rfjx2ptWP5TWITTER: @pixelprojectpodINSTAGRAM: @pixelprojectradiopodcastThank you for listening! Gjør det allerede denne helgen!- Andreas See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A fish ate my podcasting license… Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket! Today, we’re going to be talking about A Short Hike, an indie adventure game and the third game in our deeply important series of bird based games on Pocket. A Short Hike is a very minimalist game, both in style and length, but there is still a good bit to do and explore, even if the game’s world isn’t so big. Part platformer, part adventure game, you spend much of your time in the game collecting items to reach new heights and complete tasks to deepen your relationships with the animal characters who inhabit the camp in which the game takes place. It’s these charming characters that give the game it’s personality. To the point where it feels reductive to refer to doing things for them as “completing tasks,” as the rewards you get for finishing them are much less important than the mostly tiny stories they all have. Combine that with a surprisingly satisfying set of movement mechanics and a dynamic soundtrack, and you get a really focused experience that oscillates between calming exploration and exhilarating flights around the island. We’re going to be talking about the host of different activities available to do in the game’s open world, how the dialogue really sells the game’s light but personal narrative, and how close we are in age to the target demographic for fishing. Thank you for joining us again this week! This game comes from a half-joking suggestion on our Discord server we got after posting the Unfinished Swan episode, and I’m personally really happy to have been made aware of it. This type of short, calming game is really welcome during stressful times (see, e.g., a global pandemic, playing Resident Evil VII, etc.), so I hope if you decided to play along this week that this game was able to put you in a more relaxed headspace. Next time, we’re going to be talking about Phasmophobia, partly to act as a counterpart to what we’re playing for the main podcast next, and partly as an excuse to screw around online with some friends, so I hope you’ll join us for that!

Det kan være let nok at starte en opgave. Udfordringen ligger i at færdiggøre arbejdet. We have always been much better at starting podcasts than finishing them. Welcome to the podcast! Today, we’re going to be talking about The Unfinished Swan, an adventure game from Giant Sparrow, the team behind What Remains of Edith Finch. This is an adventure game that has a very concrete idea and it goes about expanding on that idea in an extremely fluid way. Pun intended. The game revolves around throwing balls of liquid, which change properties throughout the game, to accomplish a variety of things including revealing pathways (the mechanic on which the game markets itself ), interacting with objects and growing plants. This is a double-edged sword because the different ways to interact are all interesting in one way or another, but because of how little time you spend with any one verb, none of them feel fully explored in the way we would like to see them. This isn’t a death sentence by any means, and the accolades this game received are evidence of that, but it leaves a lot of slack to be picked up by the game’s other elements. We’re going to be talking about the implications of the game’s visual design, the experience of playing with the different forms of interaction and about the plants and how they were mushy. Thank you for checking out the episode! This was a game that got a lot of attention from indie game circles when it was released, so it’s always been something we’ve wanted to go back to. Plus, it was recently released on PC and mobile so it’s easier than ever to play along. Next time, we’re going from a game that was pretty universally appreciated to one with a more mixed reception: Minit. So join us then for what will assuredly be the correct opinion to hold.

Leave your front door open and your podcast unguarded, Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket this week! Today, we’re going to be talking about Plants vs. Zombies, arguably PopCap’s breakout game, a casual tower defense game with a distinct theme. But I probably don’t need to explain what this game is to you, because statistically you’ve probably played, seen, or at least heard of it before given how crazy popular it was. Revisiting the game after so many years really puts into context what about the game made it popular and how we’ve advanced in design space and that historical context makes up a lot of the discussion this week. We’re going to talk about casual tower defense game design and how the game wants to make you feel good, the attractive visual design and presentation and we go on and on about how free mobile games have become a detestable quagmire of unacceptable advertising. Thank you for listening to us shatter our nostalgia this week! We’re trying to balance our pocket episodes between smaller titles that don’t take a long time to play and ones that can actually be played on a device that fits in your pocket, and this game is pretty emblematic of the latter. However, next time we’re sampling a little more of the former and talking about The Unfinished Swan, from the developers of What Remains of Edith Finch, so be sure to check back then.

Media require active perception from their users. Videogames provide perhaps the most obvious example of this; in order to perceive the world of a videogame, a user must play the game, negotiating its spaces and manipulating its objects. While perception of cinema may be less obviously active, it is in fact no less active than is perception of games. At the turn of the Twentieth Century, the emergence of film established new modes of experience for viewers, and perception of films remains a skill that cinema-goers continually develop and refine. Perception of media has often been treated as an exception to the operations of perception in general. Reflecting on the twin examples of the 2011 videogame The Unfinished Swan and the 1900 film How it Feels to be Run Over, I propose that active perception in media use might be seen as exemplary of, rather than exceptional to, the work we do every day in order to perceive the world around us.
