Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 700 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls Austin is an expert on agricultural and antitrust policy. During the 2020 presidential campaign, he advised candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg on agricultural policy before ultimately serving as Co-Chair of the Biden campaign's Agriculture Antitrust Policy Committee. He is a Fellow of the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale University, an initiative that brings together faculty, students, and scholars to collaborate on research related to competition policy and antitrust enforcement. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Common Good Iowa and the Socially Responsible Agriculture Project. In 2022, The Advocate named him a "Champion of Pride.” He recently published his debut book, Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry, which profiles a series of powerful magnates to illustrate the concentration of power in the American food system. The book has received universal acclaim. Publishers Weekly gave it a Starred Review and the host of Bloomberg's Odd Lots commended the book, remarking that “I have come away with a completely different idea of agriculture that I cannot unsee." The book has received praise from across the political spectrum, including a rave review from The American Conservative. Austin also has a strong track record of organizing conferences and other forums to push the conversation forward on agriculture policy. He recently worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to organize a conference and publish a compendium at Yale Law School entitled “Reforming America's Food Retail Markets,” which explored competition issues in the nation's food retail industry. He previously spearheaded other conferences at the Yale Law School, including “Big Ag & Antitrust: Competition Policy for a Sustainable and Humane Food System.” He also created & organized the "Heartland Forum" in Storm Lake, Iowa, the first candidate forum during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary process, which focused on the impacts of economic concentration in rural America. Austin is a 7th generation Iowan. His mother Kathy managed a beauty salon in his hometown of Cedar Rapids before opening her own bakery. His father Scott delivered and merchandised beer for a local, family-owned beer distributor. Austin's passion for agriculture comes from spending weekends working with his Grandpa Frerick. He has held a job since the age of 12, when he started working at the Cedar Rapids Gazette as a paperboy. He attended Grinnell College on merit scholarships and Pell Grants. While in college, Austin wrote two theses on corporate power in Iowa's slaughterhouse communities. After being the first in his family to graduate from college, Austin attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for graduate school on a full academic scholarship. He has since held positions at the Congressional Research Service and at the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Tax Analysis, where he published research on executive compensation, pharmaceutical corporate charity abuses, and the growth of concentration in the American economy. “In this eye-opening debut study, Frerick, an agricultural policy fellow at Yale University, reveals the ill-gained stranglehold that a handful of companies have on America's food economy…It's a disquieting critique of private monopolization of public necessities.” --Publishers Weekly, starred Barons is the story of seven corporate titans, their rise to power, and the consequences for everyone else. Take Mike McCloskey, Chairman of Fair Oaks Farms. In a few short decades, he went from managing a modest dairy herd to running the Disneyland of agriculture, where school children ride trams through mechanized warehouses filled with tens of thousands of cows that never see the light of day. What was the key to his success? Hard work and exceptional business savvy? Maybe. But more than anything else, Mike benefitted from deregulation of the American food industry, a phenomenon that has consolidated wealth in the hands of select tycoons, and along the way, hollowed out the nation's rural towns and local businesses. Along with Mike McCloskey, readers will meet a secretive German family that took over the global coffee industry in less than a decade, relying on wealth traced back to the Nazis to gobble up countless independent roasters. They will discover how a small grain business transformed itself into an empire bigger than Koch Industries, with ample help from taxpayer dollars. And they will learn that in the food business, crime really does pay—especially when you can bribe and then double-cross the president of Brazil. These, and the other stories in this book, are simply examples of the monopolies and ubiquitous corruption that today define American food. The tycoons profiled in these pages are hardly unique: many other companies have manipulated our lax laws and failed policies for their own benefit, to the detriment of our neighborhoods, livelihoods, and our democracy itself. Barons paints a stark portrait of the consequences of corporate consolidation, but it also shows we can choose a different path. A fair, healthy, and prosperous food industry is possible—if we take back power from the barons who have robbed us of it. Since a pair of newspapermen challenged each other to ride their bikes across the state in 1973, what has evolved into the internationally-known Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa has included Johnson County among its overnight stops on eight occasions. But Coralville officials felt especially compelled to bid for a featured role in this year's July 22-29 route — given the 50th year of RAGBRAI aligns with a meaningful occasion for the city: its 150th anniversary. The city got its wish Saturday when RAGBRAI announced its 2023 route will weave through Coralville on July 28 — marking the city's sixth time as an overnight host. The full RAGBRAI route will start July 22 along the Missouri River in Sioux City and make overnight stops in Storm Lake, Carroll, Ames, Des Moines, Tama-Toledo, and Coralville. The route's final day will take riders to Davenport and its banks of the Mississippi River on July 29 — the same place the first cross-state expedition wrapped five decades ago.Two dogs were killed in a Cedar Rapids house fire Saturday and a cat was rescued, according to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. Art Cullen is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and editor of The Storm Lake Times. It's a family-run paper in small town Iowa. There's a great documentary called Storm Lake(2021) about the Cullens and the paper that I highly recommend. He's kinda become THE go-to expert on the Iowa Caucuses, and a recent op-ed about the Caucuses in the New York Timesprompted me to finally reach out and ask him to be on the show. This guy is a hero to many Iowans and I hope you enjoy it. This was also conducted at 7am Los Angeles time, so it's also an example of me talking to a person exponentially smarter than me, while I'm also awake before I want to be.

Matt Hanson, a former Iowa resident, and Skye Moench win Ironman Des Moines championships Matt Hanson requested the full fury of heat and humidity that a June day in Iowa can provide. The conditions at the Ironman Des Moines North American Championship were nearly more than he desired. The former Storm Lake resident captured his fourth Ironman North American Championship on a day with temperatures approaching 90 degrees. The 37-year-old Hanson bent over and then crumpled to the carpet after holding up the winner's banner at Court Avenue. "I got across the finish line and the vision went blurry," Hanson said after claiming the $15,000 top prize. "It wasn't my plan to end up being flat on my back. I'm not feeling great right now. Bittersweet. A great day overall, didn't finish well. The heat definitely got to me." Each season, we have a guest that is a bit out of left field. That's this episode. This week, we wanted to dig into the process of developing admission professionals from student workers. We're joined by someone from outside the world of admission to show us that there's a much better way to do this. Terry Tumbarello is the Director of Residence Life at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, in Whitewater, Wisconsin - and is a personal friend and mentor of one of our hosts. He describes how student affairs efficiently exposes rising professionals to a wide range of options outside their alma mater. We follow up with a career progression discussion with a rising star, Conner Ellinghuysen, Director of Admission at Buena Vista University, in Storm Lake, Iowa. We hope you'll finish this episode and initiate a discussion with some of your student workers this week about the range of options they'll have in the admissions profession. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adlunchcast/message
This week, co-hosts Ellen Clegg and Dan Kennedy run down a number of news stories, including a major deal in New Jersey: The nonprofit Corporation for New Jersey Local Media (CNJLM) acquired 14 weekly newspapers serving some 50 municipalities. The papers are owned by the New Jersey Hills Media Group. The deal is similar to one announced last year when Colorado Community Media sold its 24 weekly and monthly newspapers in a complex deal involving several nonprofit organizations. The difference is that management of the Colorado papers was turned over to The Colorado Sun, a digital start-up that was awarded an ownership share and could eventually become the majority owner. In New Jersey, the sellers, Liz and Steve Parker, will remain in charge. Ellen unpacks the story behind a glaring omission in the award-winning documentary film, "Storm Lake," and Dan and Ellen both try to grapple with the blockchain and how Web3 might affect local newsrooms.
This month, Storm Lake became a one-newspaper town. With the help of a billionaire, the Storm Lake Times bought its competitor the Pilot Tribune. How will consolidation impact its journalism?
We talked with former Glidden Ralston Wildcat Hannah Whitver and former South Central Calhoun Titan Zane Neubaum. They both play basketball at Buena Vista in Storm Lake. The Bracket Challenge was also recapped.
The ongoing Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival features the documentary "Youth v Gov," about a group of young people suing the U.S. government over climate change. Then, "Storm Lake" explores the challenges facing newspapers and the idea that "news deserts" are a threat to democracy. Plus, thousands of kids in Pueblo County get paid to read.
Ask Google what Storm Lake, Iowa is famous for and you'll learn that it's the fourth largest glacier lake in the state and is considered the region's best for walleye fishing. But this seemingly ordinary town of 11,000 in northwest Iowa is also the home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biweekly The Storm Lake Times, edited by the incomparable Art Cullen. In Jerry Risius and Beth Levison's beguiling documentary “Storm Lake,” we meet Art and the rest of the Cullen clan, who, together, are fighting the good fight for the continued survival of small, independent journalism in this country. Beth joins Mike and Ken for a delightful conversation about her thoroughly enjoyable ride of a film. We ask about topics big and small, including the future of journalism, what it's like when the presidential primary circus comes to town, how Andrew Bird came to lend his musical chops to the film, and even what really goes on above the Better Day Cafe (hint: son Tom Cullen lived there). The podcast is free, even if the paper costs a dollar (but well worth it). You won't want to miss our conversation or the documentary, which premieres on PBS' Independent Lens on November 15th. Filmmakers Beth Levison and Jerry Risius discuss their documentary “Storm Lake,” about the Storm Lake Times, a small-town family-run newspaper in Iowa, and its efforts to stay afloat amidst shrinking ad revenues and the coronavirus pandemic.
