The Hidden Power of Transfer: How Dr. Toyia Younger is Changing Student Mobility Forever

In this episode of the Innovating Together Podcast, host Bridget Burns sits down with Dr. Toyia Younger of Iowa State University to shine a spotlight on one of the most overlooked drivers of social mobility in higher education: transfer student success. Dr. Younger, a national thought leader and passionate advocate for transfer students, shares her personal journey; from her early days as Director of Student Activities at a community college to becoming a national voice for reform through her work with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS).This episode revisits her riveting Ed Talk from the UIA National Summit, a session that sparked vital conversations about why higher ed must prioritize transfer pathways if we truly care about equity and mobility. Dr. Younger recounts the lessons she learned working alongside students who shattered outdated stereotypes about community colleges, and she calls out institutions for the glaring disparities in resources and support between first-time freshmen and transfer students. With humor, candor, and clarity, she challenges leaders to stop paying lip service and start implementing real, systemic change. You'll learn:We can't talk about social mobility without addressing transfer success.Institutional inequities in support and resources for transfer students are unacceptable.Authentic commitment means scaling programs, funding, and services proportionately. The power of collaboration and transparency—we must share what works.Transfer work is not optional for any institution serious about student success. This episode is a rallying cry: whether you're a policymaker, administrator, or practitioner, it's time to take action. Listen now and commit to transforming how your institution supports transfer students because together, we go farther.“Don't tell me you're committed to transfer students if you have two people doing transfer at an institution with 30,000 students.”Learn more about the UIA by visiting:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterYouTubeFacebookThis week's episode is sponsored by Mainstay, a student retention and engagement tool where you can increase student and staff engagement with the only platform consistently proven to boost engagement, retention, and wellbeing. Content Warning: conversation on eating disorders and disordered eating: mentions of anorexia nervosa, bulimia, weight bias, and suicidal ideationHello friends. Today's topic is a big one and a sensitive one as well; today we're talking about eating disorders. It's a different type of conversation, though, because we're not going to talk about what they are and how to diagnose them, instead, we're going to talk about why they're so prevalent in our society and why they're underdiagnosed as well as myths perpetrated by the diet culture. I'm not tackling this subject alone, either. I've invited Dr. Cristina Castagnini, a licensed psychologist who focuses on helping women with food and body image struggles, to have this conversation with me. Cristina hosts the podcast ‘Behind the Bite' where eating disorders are talked about from a personal and professional perspective. This conversation is very necessary and Cristina is wonderful to have it with. Both Cristina and I have had our own journeys with body image and disordered eating, so we talk about that right from the start. Cristina came to her body image work a bit by accident. She wanted to focus on other issues when she encountered a patient she immediately identified as struggling with an eating disorder instead of solely the depression she came in with. Cristina realized, just like with her own treatment, that there still was no satisfactory answer of where could patients go to get real help for disordered eating. We talk about the links between diet culture and eating disorders and how diet culture has influenced medical and health care as well. Talk of losing weight almost always goes hand in hand with any health discussion when you live in a bigger body. Cristina's work and podcast aim to break those myths around weight, dieting, and health,  as well as address societal pressures. We also tackle the hard realities of weight loss injectables like Ozempic which are designed for diabetes treatment but are being openly offered as weight loss tools. This is a big topic and a deep conversation that I thank Cristina for having with me. It will absolutely open your eyes and help challenge some of your own biases.__About Cristina Castagnini, PhD:Cristina Castagnini, PhD, CEDS, is a licensed psychologist who focuses solely on helping women overcome their struggles with food and body image and to achieve a balanced life. She feels fortunate that she is now able to do just that as the Founder and Clinical Director of her own practice, and host of her weekly podcast, Behind the Bite, where she discusses the struggles of eating disorders and body image issues from both the personal and professional perspectives.__Learn more about Cristina Castagnini, PhD:Website & Podcast: BehindTheBitePodcast.comXInstagramFacebookPinterestLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

They share what they have learned from beta testing with nine community organizations and over 250 Minneapolis families. Families who use the guides are better equipped to be learning advocates for their children and more likely to provide support at home, connect with teachers and seek additional learning opportunities. Rosie Lais is the director of community resources at Great MN Schools, where she blends her strategic and relationship-building skills to ensure that every family has the tools they need to navigate the K-12 system for their children. She began her education career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Panama, where she served as national coordinator for the Leadership Development for Global Education program. An alumna of Minneapolis Public Schools, she earned her master's degree in public administration from Princeton University. Natty B. Hels was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. Early in her career she worked as assistant director of an early learning center, where she witnessed the importance and value of high-quality education in supporting the health and well-being of children and youth. After immigrating to the U.S. in 2015, she began working at Centro Tyrone Guzman, where she currently serves as the youth programs director. In this EDTalk, Paula Cole discusses opportunities for educators and families to collaborate, advocate and ultimately hold school districts and legislators accountable for the wellbeing and academic success of young people. She argues that we need to change the narrative around parent engagement, particularly for lower-income and BIPOC families, and provide culturally relevant tools for all families to become powerful agents of change for education excellence. Paula Cole was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, a place she left to pursue her dream of a college education in the United States. After six years as an Educators for Excellence (E4E) member and teacher leader, Paula joined the Minnesota chapter as executive director. Prior to this role, she worked as an elementary teacher and academic coach in Minneapolis Public Schools. Paula believes that the voices of educators are rarely sought and often ignored by policymakers, and she loves her work at E4E because it allows her to ensure that teachers' perspectives are included in education policies that directly impact children's education outcomes. This EDTalks is titled “Joy as Catalyst: Utilizing Healing Centered Practices for Adaptive Change” Our featured speakers include Faiza Bharmal, Jason Bucklin, Nikkia Hines, Matthew Myrold and Jewell Reichenberger. When considering the question "what's next in education?”, the founders of The Collaborative Affect agree that healing is the central through-line. These past years have been full of traumatic moments, and we cannot expect educators and students to "bounce back" by brushing past this collective pain. We heal in many ways, but the most accessible way is through intentional and radical joy. In their EDTalk, Faiza Bharmal, Jason Bucklin, Nikkia Hines, Matthew Myrold and Jewell Reichenberger will offer an anecdotal exploration of joyful, relationship-centered schools where students, staff, families and community members can see and feel that they belong. This passionate group of educators will help lead the way down the path of learning, vulnerability and healing through radical joy. In our increasingly polarized cultural and political environment, where it has arguably become much harder to engage in civilized discussion with those we may oppose, Dr. Jackie Vertigan is holding on to optimism. In her EDTalk, she will pull from personal experiences, research, and identifiable public trends to explore the contemporary experience of dissent and negative discourse. She will share her approach for looking beyond the statements, opinions, and personalities of those from whom we differ and, instead, find concrete ways to identify commonalities – at very least, our shared humanity. She will also provide reason for optimism and encourage personal action for spreading that optimism. This virtual EDTalk was live streamed online on October 27th, 2022.

Future Teachers, you need this book before you step into a public school system for the first time as an educator.
