Send us a textWhen patience meets preparation, magic happens in the wilderness. After twenty painstaking years of waiting in New Brunswick's moose lottery system, Jesse Ells' father finally received his coveted tag—and what followed was nothing short of extraordinary. Jesse takes us deep into the Mountains of northern New Brunswick, where three generations of his family embarked on this long-awaited hunt. With meticulous planning that began months in advance—salt blocks strategically placed in spring, trail cameras monitoring activity—they were ready when opening day arrived. Within just twenty minutes of legal shooting time, their patience was rewarded with a magnificent bull moose that dressed out at exactly 900 pounds. But the story doesn't end there. What makes this tale remarkable is what happened next: despite having filled their personal tag, Jesse and his father immediately transitioned to guiding others. By the end of the brief five-day season, their camp had achieved perfection—seven tags, seven successful hunts. Jesse shares the triumphs, the challenges of extracting enormous animals from difficult terrain, and the lessons learned when clients don't heed their guides' expertise. The most memorable moment comes as Jesse recounts "the one that got away"—standing just 15 yards from the largest bull he's ever seen, watching helplessly as it slipped away before a shot could be taken. His vivid storytelling puts you right beside him in the field, feeling both the exhilaration of success and the sting of missed opportunity that keeps hunters coming back year after year.Whether you're planning your own moose hunt or simply enjoy authentic wilderness adventures, Jesse's experiences offer valuable insights and pure entertainment. Send us a textA mountain lion's paw print in fresh snow means something different to Scott of Montana Mountain Lion Adventures—it's the beginning of a primal pursuit that represents one of hunting's most specialized traditions. Through decades of experience training "long, sophisticated tracking machines" (his hounds), Scott has developed a deep understanding of both the cats he pursues and the dogs that help him do it.From his childhood fascination with a life-sized mountain lion mount in his family's kitchen to becoming president of the Montana State Hounding Association, Scott's journey reveals the extraordinary patience and perseverance required to master this craft. He shares the pivotal moment when an ornery but skilled local hunter took him under his wing, leading to his first successful mountain lion hunt and the realization that his previous failures weren't due to a lack of tracking ability but working with dogs unsuited to Montana's challenging conditions.Scott provides fascinating insights into his selective breeding approach—by 18 months, his dogs must independently trail and tree lions, and by 30 months, they must perform on dry ground without snow to assist tracking. His commitment to quality over quantity is evident in his guiding philosophy, typically using only three dogs when most would run six or seven, ensuring every hound genuinely contributes to the hunt.Beyond the hunt itself, Scott's participation in Montana's Mountain Lion Monitoring Program reveals surprising scientific discoveries about these predators. GPS-collared cats have shown that while some lions kill deer weekly, others might survive 20 days between major kills, relying on smaller prey. Perhaps most striking is the evidence that mortality rates in non-hunted lion populations closely match those in areas with well-managed hunting quotas, challenging common assumptions about conservation approaches.Call Scott directly to discuss booking a hunt—with only a limited number of clients accepted each year and typically booked 1-2 years in advance, these specialized experiences require advance planning but deliver an authentic connection to one of hunting's most challenging pursuits.Check us out on Facebook and instagram Hunts On Outfitting, and also our YouTube page Hunts On Outfitting Podcast. Dirk Durham is one of the worlds best elk hunters and callers, he's also the marketing manager with Phelps Game Calls and one helluva friend to me. As a return guest on this show, he never disappoints. In this episode, Dirk and I discuss etiquette on the mountain and answer listener questions and comments on this topic. We're both long enough in the tooth to remember hunting before the internet, and have seen how the hunting community has changed over the last few decades. Etiquette and unspoken rules between hunters have always been of importance, and perhaps for many, they didn't have the proper mentorship to know what good hunting etiquette is. We're hoping to change that with episodes like this one, and there's nobody better than Dirk to kick this important conversation off! Dirk on Instagram Show Sponsors! Today is a special one because it's our first episode featuring a member of our Wits & Weights Facebook community, Josh Isley. We discuss strength, lifelong health, training for events, avoiding overtraining, and lots more. Josh Isely is a 42-year-old mechanical engineer who loves hunting the backcountry and mountains but who also rides a desk every day. He was an athlete in high school and as happens to many people, relied on his natural abilities for too long and, in his own words, “let himself go a bit.” Josh was inconsistent with training and developed a bad relationship with food. He spent the last several years training on and off for hunts and finally got it dialed in this year in preparation for a mountain goat hunt! Josh still struggles with food and binging but is getting better all the time; his program worked well as he was able to climb much better than he could last year. He is now moving into recovery mode and beginning to prepare for New Zealand in the spring. Topics discussed in this episode: Josh's background and how he finds time to go hunting Why motivation is not enough (and what we should do instead) How we avoid overtraining (especially as we age) How to minimize the impact on aging/ailing joints Dealing with setbacks (injuries/anxiety/depression) and how to overcome those Managing the dichotomy of strength vs. endurance Balancing training for longevity with specific events What recovery looks like (and training periodization) in preparation for his event in New Zealand Strategies to overcome the urge to binge on processed food Dealing with the influences of your support structure when they don't “get” your nutrition/training RELATED LINKSTalk to Josh in the Wits & Weights Facebook community Watch the episode on video here

Throughout the podcast the team discusses the ins and outs of each line of calls, a few tips, and techniques. This is a fun and informative podcast that you don't want to miss. The difference between notching your tag or going home empty-handed from a hunt is usually determined by a few decisions or important moments. It is often only with hindsight that the outcome of the hunt can be understood by analyzing the decisive moments that led to the outcome — for good, or for bad. Every episode in this Reverse-Engineering Hunting Success podcast series will feature a conversation with an experienced hunter and dissect a successful hunt, looking back to understand or "reverse engineer" the key decisions or other decisive moments that led to their success. On this episode of our Reverse-Engineering Success series we speak with Adam Janke from Beyond the Kill and the Journal of Mountain Hunting. Adam shares the story of a successful Mountain Goat hunt in BC that involved some unexpected turns and key decisions that led to the final moments of success. It's kind of a variety show today on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. We're talking to Lane Housner about mountain hunting, sika deer in Maryland, and how he's set his life up to be a hardcore public land deer hunter. Lane could be described in one word, consistent. Every year he seems to be incredibly successful in his pursuit of whitetails in high pressure hunting situations. In this episode we're talking all about his strategy in the woods to maintain his consistency. You can watch all of Lane's hunts, along with his group of buddies, on the "In The Presence" YouTube channel.Become a SGH Patron:https://www.patreon.com/SouthernGroundHuntingOur Partners:Spartan Forge - Use the code “southernground” at www.spartanforge.ai to save 25% on your membershipGoWIld - Use the code “southernground” on your gear purchases to save 10% https://timetogowild.com/profile/RkFymLZ3lAc4odGNudd2LwTethrd - www.tethrdnation.comNucanoe - www.nucanoe.comSkre Gear - Use the code “southernground” at www.skregear.com to save 15% on your purchase Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast

Some troubling news in the sheep hunting community. At least 12 illegal rams have been seized by the Conservation Officer Service this year. These rams did not meet the legal requirements and yet hunters still pulled the trigger. Thinhorn rams must reach either eight years of age or full curl in order to be legal for harvesting in BC. In an average year, 3 to 5 rams typically fail inspection as legal rams. So why are we making mistakes? Dylan Ayers hosts Adam Janke of the Journal of Mountain Hunting and Kyle Stelter of the Wild Sheep Society of British Columbia to look at the reasons that could be fueling this problem. We talk about the growing interest in sheep hunting, and how tools and technology are making sheep hunting more accessible. Being exposed to an abundance of information gives a false impression of knowledge accumulation, however, this does not and cannot replace experience and true skill building in the field – sheep hunters will relate to our discussion about the challenges of ageing sheep in the field. Is sheep hunting attracting more inexperienced hunters? Are the motivations changing for this type of hunt? Why are we making the wrong call on these sheep? And most importantly, what are the implications to sheep conservation and our privilege to continue hunting sheep in BC? Lots to be discussed here. This is a challenging conversation, but one we need to have in the hunting community. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks to Dyaln Ayers from Eat Wild for hosting this important discussion. https://eatwild.ca/ Photo credit: Fort Nelson Conservation Officer Service

This week I got to sit down with my good friend Adam Janke. Adam is not only a dedicated life-long hunter, but he also founded the Journal of Mountain Hunting online magazine and the Beyond the Kill podcast. Both of which are staples of the BC hunting community. We had a great chat about how he got both those projects off the ground, some of the challenges he faced, and we even dove into his most recent sheep hunt. If you don't follow the Journal or BTK already I highly recommend both.
