Many people have struggled with their mental health during the pandemic, but still don't always feel free to discuss it, especially at work. Stigma remains a problem and discussing your difficulties at all is off-limits. For many years in England a campaign called Time To Change tried to change attitudes and the evidence from that and other initiatives was used to launch campaigns in India, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda in 2019. Sue Baker, Mind's International Health Advisor, and Rosemary Gathara, Director of Basic Needs, Basic Rights in Kenya discuss the findings of the campaigns with Claudia Hammond. Matt Fox, Professor of Global Epidemiology at Boston University in the US, joins Claudia to talk about the latest global picture of Covid, mask wearing at basketball games in the US and the Kindness Test. And they look at research that suggests too much free time is bad for us. Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Erika Wright (Picture: A woman sitting in a room. 'Brown Car Guy & Buddies' - Sue Baker was one of the original hosts of Top Gear, appearing on 100 programmes over 11 years from 1980 to 1991. She also raced, co-drove with Michele Mouton (in a short-wheelbase Audi Quattro Sport rally car), Derek Bell and others, as well as covering the legendary James Hunt vs Niki Lauda era in Formula 1. She is an award-winning motoring writer, editor & broadcaster with almost 50 years of experience of reviewing cars and reporting on motorsports and motoring matters, as one of the first women journalists on the scene in the late 60s and early 70s. As well as her love and obsession with cars and all things technical, instilled from a very early age, her ambition was to be a journalist in fabled Fleet Street, starting out at local newspapers in Kent, studying journalism at a college in Essex and ultimately writing for almost every major newspaper including Observer, Daily Telegraph, Independent, Daily Mail, Daily Star, Daily & Sunday Express, Times and Sunday Times. She is an absolute legend from the world of automotive media, and I'm deeply honoured and grateful to host her on the latest episode of BrownCarGuy & Buddies! Are you an undecided voter? Claudia Hammond finds out what psychology can tell us about some of the influences on our decision making in the run up to the election. Cognitive psychologist, Professor Colin Davis talks about his research on TV election debates and the influence of the on screen 'worm' used to show what a group of undecided voters think about what's being said throughout the debate. How is mental health portrayed in the media? Paul Whitehouse's recent comedy, Nurse, showed him playing a range of people being visited by community psychiatric nurse, Liz. Is it funny and does it matter if people with mental health problems are used as the subject of comedy? Claudia is joined by real life CPN, Lin, and by anti-stigma campaigner, Nikki Mattocks, to discuss the programme. Also - the call for picture editors not to use 'head clutching' shots to accompany stories about mental health in the media. Sue Baker, Director of Time to Change explains. And what would an ideal asylum look like? Artist James Leadbitter shows reporter, Victoria Gill, his creation.
"One in Four" has been a prominent slogan in campaigns to reduce stigma and discrimination against people with mental health problems. But Clinical Psychologist Martin Seager tells Claudia Hammond why he believes saying 'one in four' people will experience mental illness in any one year actually increases prejudice, artificially separating our mental health from our physical health. The Director of Time to Change, Sue Baker, disagrees, and argues that this statistical campaign tool has helped to normalise mental illness and played an important part in changing public attitudes. Humans vary in their ability to "keep a cool head" in emotionally charged situations, and difficulty to regulating emotions is linked to many psychiatric disorders. Dr Tim Dalgliesh from the Medical Research Council's Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at the University of Cambridge tells Claudia about new research which suggests our brains could, with practice, be trained to focus on the goal at hand, and not get diverted by overwhelming emotions. TV dramas, plays and films can be ruined when scriptwriters get the science wrong. The Wellcome Trust's first ever screenwriting fellowship is an attempt to give film makers the chance to immerse themselves in science and explore their interests with the country's top scientific brains. Award winning film maker Clio Barnard (The Arbor and The Selfish Giant) has spent a year trawling the Wellcome archives and meeting psychologists, psychiatrists and neuroscientists investigating memory, perception, hallucination and the impact of trauma: all themes which recur in her movies. Producer: Fiona Hill.
