Theatre critic Mark Shenton discovered his sexuality via a porn mag in Soho aged 16, that quickly turned into an addiction alongside sex addiction which escalated to him hiring porn stars by the hour. Now 12 years into his recovery, Mark found a way out of a living hell that ended in a deep, dark depression and a stark feeling of hopelessness. Mark Shenton is a very well known theatre critic but today he shows us his deeply personal and human side in, perhaps, my most raw and astoundingly honest interview yet. I cannot thank you enough for being so deeply candid to help people. Legend ❤️ More on Mark - Mark Shenton has been a full-blown theatre addict since the age of 14. He later found a way to monetise it — and get free tickets as well — by becoming a full-time professional theatre critic and commentator.  Born and raised in South Africa, he emigrated with his parents to England when he was 16, and attended Cambridge University where he read law (but spent most of his time reviewing and producing student theatre).  He later became editor of arts and entertainment at the Press Association and spent a year working in the offices of producer Cameron Mackintosh. In 2002 he went freelance and became a full-time writer, separately (and sometimes simultaneously) acting as theatre critic for WhatsOnStage, The Stage (where he was also an associate editor), the Sunday Express and londontheatre.co.uk for the next two decades. He also regularly broadcast on BBC London (radio and TV), as well as contributing to other outlets including LBC, Times Radio and Talk Radio. In 2022 he moved to West Sussex with his husband, and now writes a regular theatre newsletter which is published on his own website, ShentonStage.com. Erin, alongside CAC staff Mike and Paul, explore the complexities of the first half of life and the wisdom unveiled during the transition to the second half of life. Together, they reflect on how to embrace the "messy middle", found in-between the first and second half of life, how to forgive the past and engage in spiritual practices along the path of spiritual transformation. Before we dive in to the interview, Mike and Paul catch up with Richard at his hermitage to hear his reflections on the third chapter a decade after he originally wrote it. Erin Sanzero (she/her) is a "geriatric millennial." She's been a brick-and-mortar business owner, digital entrepreneur, musician, teacher, musical director, opera singer, banjo player, and weightlifter. Oz Clarke is one of the world's leading wine experts. Clarke has been writing about wine since the 80's, starting as Britain's Sunday Express' first wine writer, and then moving over to become the Daily Telegraph's first Wine Correspondent.  He's written over forty books on the topic, recently releasing another: 'Oz Clarke's Story of Wine: 8000 Years, 100 Bottles.' Clarke has been wandering New Zealand, reacquainting himself with the best the industry has to offer, speaking at two inaugural winegrowers events as he does so.  He was last here in 2016, and told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that since his last visit he's seen confidence come back into Chardonnay.  "It's about time," he said. "New Zealand makes fantastic Chardonnay, a lot of the best Chardonnay in the world." Clarke says it comes down to the fruit New Zealand winemakers have available to them. "I often say to winemakers, 'don't be frightened of it.'" "People would love to have the fruit that you have in New Zealand." He placed an emphasis on New Zealand wines being different to those produced elsewhere, admitting to Hosking that he's "full of excitement." "So my general feeling is that, that the place is in a pretty good, good state." New Zealand is known for its Sauvignon Blancs, and while there is an idea that the popularity can't last, Clarke doesn't necessarily agree. "The Sauvignon Blanc is not going to fade away, so long as you go on making it well." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week we have a triple bill of ballet performances by Birmingham Royal Ballet spanning 100 years with Still Life, Interlinked, and Apollo at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Saturday 10 June at 2.30pm with description by Professional Audio Describers Julia Grundy and Jonathan Nash.  Three contrasting ballets created across the last 100 years, from George Balanchine's exquisite Apollo, to Juliano Nunes's Interlinked, and David Bintley's engaging but poignant look at human impact on the world, 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café. A colourful host of endangered animals seek shelter from the storm in David Bintley's ‘Still Life' at the Penguin Café. Featuring a morris-dancing flea, a ballroom-dancing ram, a hoe-downing rat, a majestic zebra and many more, this is an ‘unforgettable' (Sunday Times), witty and enjoyable, yet bittersweet and poignant look at human impact on the world. All danced to Simon Jeffes's delightful score, originally composed for the Penguin Café Orchestra. 'Pure genius' (The Sunday Express on ‘Still Life') The ‘quiet perfection' (The Guardian) of Apollo highlighted the genius of its creator, the then 24-year-old George Balanchine, and launched his lifelong partnership with the composer Igor Stravinsky. This most exquisite of ballets was regarded by Balanchine as his artistic coming of age. Its pared back elegance gives the perfect platform for the Company's world-class dancers to shine. 'Sublime' (The Sunday Times on Apollo) Brilliant young Brazilian choreographer Juliano Nunes's Interlinked was premiered in summer 2022 as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. Described as ‘stretching ballet's mould' by The Guardian, with a specially composed score by Australian composer Luke Howard, this beautifully abstract piece explores ideas of grace, beauty and harmony in ways that push the usual boundaries of classical dance. My guest in this episode is Geoff Sutton. The stereotype of a Microsoft employee is a Computer Sciences nerd in a check shirt and chinos. Whilst they do exist Geoff is a great example of the diversity of background and experience that existed in the company as was my previous guest Neil Jordan (7 years as a Choirister at Windsor Castle) and indeed myself with my English Lit Degree (specialist subjects - Anglo-Saxon Poetry and Medieval Mystery Plays) Geoff joined Microsoft in 1996 to set up MSN News after 16 years as a journalist, including spells at the Daily Mail, Today, Sunday Express and Daily Mirror. It's no surprise then that he has a raft of stories and in this episode, we hear hilarious and fascinating stories about his time on Mail Showbiz including: ·       Running with Madonna ·       Being a waiter at Bill Wyman's Wedding ·       A one-off appearance as Elvis on the West End Stage·       Motivating Boy George to kick his heroin addiction ·       Princess Di and Fergie pretending to be WPCs at Annabel's He then moved over to News and had the challenging experience of covering three major tragedies in the UK in 87/88 namely the King's Cross Fire, the explosion and sinking of the Piper Alpha Oil Platform and Lockerbie Terrorist Attack. Born in Hackney but today Geoff lives in Bermondsey with his wife Asli and he has two grown-up children Helen and Daniel. He is a lifelong Arsenal fan, and he describes his early teens as being all about “Football and Music'. His passion for both continues to shine through and that includes learning to play the Saxophone in lock down (but more on that in Part 2!) . His song choices in this episode are: 60's – Three Coins in The Fountain          Frank Sinatra70's – No Action                                                   Elvis Costello80's – Club Tropicana                                        Wham Enjoy

With Labour well ahead in the polls and the party's policies being blamed for the UK's current economic turmoil, it promises to be a challenging party conference for the Conservatives in Birmingham this weekend. And this week on The Northern Agenda podcast, Rob Parsons speaks to John Stevenson, the new chair of the Northern Research Group which represents the region's Conservative MPs. The Carlisle MP tells us how he hopes the levelling up agenda can be reconciled with Liz Truss's enthusiasm for tax cuts, and what he needs to hear if his fellow 'red wall' Conservatives have any chance of getting re-elected in the next election. Rob also speaks to Steve Rotheram, the Labour metro mayor of the Liverpool City Region, after a conference where Sir Keir Starmer promised a clean energy revolution. What will his plans mean for existing schemes on Merseyside? And we get the thoughts of Jon Walker, deputy political editor at the Sunday Express, on how the two main parties are faring during conference season. The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. It is presented by Rob Parsons, and produced by Daniel J. McLaughlin. Anita Rani, Radio 2 Book Club.It is the summer of 1962 and sixteen-year-old Evie Epworth stands on the cusp of womanhood. But what kind of a woman will she be?Up until now, Evie's life has been nothing special: a patchwork of school, Guides, cows, lost mothers, lacrosse and village fetes. But, inspired by her idols (Charlotte Brontë, Shirley MacLaine, the Queen), she dreams of a world far away from rural East Yorkshire, a world of glamour lived under the bright lights of London (or Leeds). Standing in the way of these dreams, though, is Christine, Evie's soon-to-be stepmother, a manipulative and money-grubbing schemer who is lining Evie up for a life of shampoo-and-set drudgery at the stinky local salon.Luckily Evie is not alone. With the help of a few friends, and the wise counsel of the two Adam Faith posters on her bedroom wall (‘brooding Adam' and ‘sophisticated Adam'), Evie comes up with a plan to rescue her future from Christine's pink and over-perfumed clutches. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan to look back at the 1978-79 season. The 1978-79 was an in and out season in more ways than one. Still in Division One, under the management of Ken Shellito, Chelsea were still relying on youngsters coming up from the academy. Gary Chivers, Mikey Fillery, Jonny Bumstead, Mickey Nutton, David Stride and John Sitton all got promoted to the first team.Bizarrely, Chelsea signed former Leeds and Everton maverick Duncan McKenzie, whose sole contribution to Chelsea was being pictured leaping over a Mini. A sadder return was the return of the King of Stamford Bridge, Peter ‘Ossie' Osgood, who in truth, was a shadow of the player we knew and loved. Chelsea's financial chickens had come home to roost as the disastrous overspend on the new East Stand had near bankrupted the club, while the North Stand was crumbling and was subject to a GLC safety order.Things were no better on the pitch. With only 2 wins in the first 3 months of the season, Chelsea were bottom of the league by the turn of the year.Shellito made way for Frank ‘The Tank' Upton, for one day and then Danny Blanchflower, former Spurs double winning captain and now columnist for the Sunday Express was appointed manager to the astonishment of everyone, not least the players.Blanchflower's first match in charge saw Chelsea lose 7-2 away to Middlesbrough and shortly after by a 5-1 away defeat to Ipswich and rounded off toward the end of the season with a 6-0 defeat away to Forest and a 5-2 away defeat to Arsenal. Maybe Blanchflower should have got the players train with footballs rather than imaginary ones they trained with. With 2 wins from the first 22 league games and only a further 3 wins all season, Chelsea's worst ever performance in Division One saw them relegated bottom on 20 points from 42 games. To round off a miserable season, Ray Wilkins was sold to Man Utd that summer and Peter Bonetti retired. If you've ever heard the expression “where were you when you were shit?”, the answer is the 1978-79 season. To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. In today's episode, we're joined by journalist, author, and mental health campaigner, Bryony Gordon. Bryony began her career in journalism at eighteen - building up a name for herself as a successful columnist and features writer for publications including The Sunday Express and The Telegraph and she won 'Young Journalist of the Year' in 2007. She married her husband Harry, a financial journalist, in 2013, and together they have a daughter. In spite of an incredible successful professional life, Bryony's battle with mental illness has plagued her since childhood. She's suffered from OCD since she was just twelve, and struggled with bulimia, depression and anxiety since her twenties. She went to rehab in 2017 to tackle her alcoholism and has now been sober for over three years. In 2014, she began sharing her struggles with her readers and social media followers and has since written four best-selling books; interviewed Prince Harry about his own mental health struggles on her podcast 'Bryony Gordon's Mad World'; and started Mental Health Mates, a peer support group which encourages people with mental health issues to meet up and walk and talk without judgement. This is Bryony's story in her own words...*This episode is sponsored by Clinique. 'Brown Car Guy & Buddies' - Sue Baker was one of the original hosts of Top Gear, appearing on 100 programmes over 11 years from 1980 to 1991. She also raced, co-drove with Michele Mouton (in a short-wheelbase Audi Quattro Sport rally car), Derek Bell and others, as well as covering the legendary James Hunt vs Niki Lauda era in Formula 1. She is an award-winning motoring writer, editor & broadcaster with almost 50 years of experience of reviewing cars and reporting on motorsports and motoring matters, as one of the first women journalists on the scene in the late 60s and early 70s. As well as her love and obsession with cars and all things technical, instilled from a very early age, her ambition was to be a journalist in fabled Fleet Street, starting out at local newspapers in Kent, studying journalism at a college in Essex and ultimately writing for almost every major newspaper including Observer, Daily Telegraph, Independent, Daily Mail, Daily Star, Daily & Sunday Express, Times and Sunday Times. She is an absolute legend from the world of automotive media, and I'm deeply honoured and grateful to host her on the latest episode of BrownCarGuy & Buddies! »
