The party band, Red Baraat, is from Brooklyn, but their music grows out of the hard-partying tradition of Punjabi wedding bands. They're a big band full of brass instruments and drums, rock guitar, jazzy improvisations, occasionally some rap, (both the dhol and drumset keep the groove going), who bring the festivities with them wherever they go. Hear their set, live from the New Sounds 40th Anniversary Party from Brooklyn Bowl, and an interview with drummer and composer Sunny Jain, who leads the band on dhol, the double-sided drum, one which is definitely an “outside” instrument. Hear Jain play his new, bigger, responsive Sufi dhol from Lahore, Pakistan, which suffered a strap malfunction during their set, and the band barely missed a beat. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Chaal Baby” “Kala Mukra” “Zindabad” “Gaadi of Truth” “Shruggy Ji” “Ishq Tera Tadpave” “Thumbs Up”

Sunny Jain is the Founder and CEO of Floré by Sun Genomics and is driven to better understand the microbe cells that live inside of our intestinal tract and all around our body. With a history of working at Illumina, Sunny is studying the DNA from those cells, the microbiome, to understand their function and how they contribute to our overall health. Sunny explains, "Sun Genomics has created the world's only precision probiotic, And it utilizes AI, DNA sequencing, biome chromatics, and e-health technology. Our technology helps us build the largest database of microbiomes that are sequenced via metagenomics, or whole genome sequencing, to understand the modulatory effects or the changing effects that food ingredients and probiotics can have for 80 plus million Americans that suffer from gut health issues every year." "So, you truly are unique, from a gut microbiome perspective. Our human DNA is 99.9 percent similar. So, we're very identical from a human DNA perspective. But the DNA from microbes of the gut, you're maybe 10 percent similar, and you are 90 percent unique from the gut microbiome." "And this is really where I think precision medicine can enable a lot of advancement to our human health. It is really within that large, vast difference where we will be able to find much more customized solutions." @SunGenomics #SunGenomics #GutHealth #Probiotics #Microflora #CustomizedProbiotics #Microbiome #SanDiego Flore.com Download the transcript here

Ep.K080: Unilever to remove ‘normal' from beauty products packaging Consumer goods conglomerate Unilever said Tuesday last week that it will no longer use the word “normal” to advertise and package its beauty and personal care products and that it will ban excessive photoshopping of models as part of its inclusivity policy. The company, which owns skincare brands like Dove and Simple and haircare brands like TreSemme and TIGI, said the word “normal” will be removed from the packaging of at least 200 products within a year. It also said it will increase the number of advertisements featuring people from diverse groups, and that it will not “digitally alter a person's body shape, size, proportion or skin color” in its brand advertising. Many skincare and hair products use phrases such as “for normal skin” or “normal hair,” and Unilever says its global research suggests that using “normal” as a descriptor “makes most people feel excluded.” Sunny Jain, who leads Unilever's beauty and personal care division, said the company wanted to tackle “harmful norms and stereotypes” and shape a “far more inclusive definition of beauty.” “We know that removing ‘normal' from our products and packaging will not fix the problem alone, but it is an important step forward,” Jain said in a statement. The company renamed its skin-lightening brand in India last year from Fair & Lovely to Glow & Lovely after facing anger from customers who said Unilever was perpetuating negative stereotypes about darker skin tones.

The group Red Baraat has become synonymous with a raucous good time, a celebratory mix of bhangra – the dance music of the Punjab region, New Orleans horns, go-go and a bit of hip-hop besides. They’re led by drummer-composer Sunny Jain, who plays the dhol, a traditional two-headed drum slung over the shoulder. A talented and energetic army of horns, guitar, and percussion instruments rounds out the lineup, wedding the bhangra roots of the dhol to a N’awlins brass funk ‘n’ street party. The band played a set for us at Brooklyn Bowl in June 2019 and it ruled. Enjoy. (-Caryn Havlik) Set list: Mast Kalander Tunak Tunak Tun Shruggy Ji Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna Gaadi of Truth

After reading about that Bill Gates believes that Probiotic pills could bring an end to malnutrition, I felt compelled to out more about how biotechnology is changing how and what we eat. My online search quickly led me to Sun Genomics, which is harnessing the power of genomic sequencing to improve the quality of your microbiota. Sun Genomics is a unique precision probiotic that creates a custom-formulated probiotic tailored to one's unique DigestiveDNA and is the world's first tailored probiotic. After reading more about the San Diego-based custom probiotic startup, and I invited their CEO, Sunny Jain onto my daily tech podcast to learn more about the story behind the Company. Sun Genomics was founded by CEO, Sunny Jain in 2016, and the Company's story began with the birth of his son. When his son began suffering from digestive distress, Sunny went to find a probiotic. But he quickly found himself standing in front of the probiotic aisle AKA the "Wall of Confusion." Sunny quickly realized there wasn't a probiotic solution available. Instead of choosing a supplement at random, Sunny took tons off the shelf that day, and instead of going home, he went to the lab and began testing probiotics, sequencing his son's gut microbiome, and researching strains that best matched his son's gut microbiome analysis. Sunny reveals what customers should be looking out for when staring at the endless list of probiotics. He also reveals more about biotech startups and their role within the health ecosystem to solve major health crises beyond gut health.
HVMN Podcast: Evidence-based Nutrition, Fitness, & Biohacking
Optimizing the gut microbiome (the system of microorganisms living largely in our intestines) is increasingly being thought of as a crucial lever for many aspects of our health: Preventing metabolic disorders, reducing negative heart conditions, and even improving brain health. This novel area of the human platform is gaining a robust body of research, and Sun Genomics CEO Sunny Jain joins us this week to demystify the importance of gut health. Sunny believes microbiome science has evolved to a place where consumers can realize actual health solutions and improve their diet, lifestyle, and nutrition by implementing behavioral change. Sun Genomics allows you to test your microbiome and take precision probiotics allowing you to experience the change in your microbiome and, in turn, your body. Anyone who has been down the health aisle at their local store has seen the vast array of home health aids, including products like pre- and probiotics. Because of the diversity that exists in people, none of these mass-produced products will work for everyone who uses it. This means that many people will not see any specific benefits from taking these products. Sun Genomics hopes to change that by leveraging all of the scientific research written about the intestinal biome and create probiotics tailored to an individual's gut profile or DNA sample. Simply send in a test kit from their website, and Sun Genomics will send you back a detailed report of your microbiata and a personalized probiotic that is tailored to you. Sun Genomics has already helped individuals lead happier, healthier lives, with many success stories. Individuals can have their guts re-tested in as little as 1 month, to see if it is working.
