An in-depth conversation with the Sikh musician and educator about growing up as a child of immigrants and turning to music for solace and inspiration. Launching from last week's Q&A with Sonny Singh, a Sikh musician and educator, we delve into his role in the film From Here, an eloquent and moving documentary that follows the stories of four children of immigrants who confront racism, xenophobia, and an oppressive immigration system with creativity and activism. Sonny is a musician with the band Red Baraat. In 2022 he released a solo album called Chardi Kala—in which he returns to the Sikh devotional music of his childhood (which we discuss at length in this podcast). Sonny has also spent decades working as an educator on social justice issues. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/border-chronicle/support

World Music Group in the world).
The party band, Red Baraat, is from Brooklyn, but their music grows out of the hard-partying tradition of Punjabi wedding bands. They're a big band full of brass instruments and drums, rock guitar, jazzy improvisations, occasionally some rap, (both the dhol and drumset keep the groove going), who bring the festivities with them wherever they go. Hear their set, live from the New Sounds 40th Anniversary Party from Brooklyn Bowl, and an interview with drummer and composer Sunny Jain, who leads the band on dhol, the double-sided drum, one which is definitely an “outside” instrument. Hear Jain play his new, bigger, responsive Sufi dhol from Lahore, Pakistan, which suffered a strap malfunction during their set, and the band barely missed a beat. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Chaal Baby” “Kala Mukra” “Zindabad” “Gaadi of Truth” “Shruggy Ji” “Ishq Tera Tadpave” “Thumbs Up”

Red Baraat's Sonny Singh delivers borderless Punjabi anthems of hope and love as he takes center stage on the debut solo album “Chardi Kala,” whose title translates to the Sikh practice of eternal optimism and determination through the darkest of times. Produced by three-time Grammy winner Wil-Dog Abers of Ozomatli, you can hear their influence on each other via “Thir Ghar Baiso.”
For over a decade, Sonny Singh has brought his fiery trumpet and lead vocals to audiences around the world with his acclaimed group, Red Baraat. Now, he has released his solo record, Chardi Kala, named after the Sikh concept of revolutionary, eternal optimism. Offering a response to the violence and tumultuousness of these times, Chardi Kala, released and recorded independently, pushes the boundaries of Sikh Kartan and South Asian spiritual music. It also represents Singh's return to his early Punjabi and Sikh roots, as seen now through the lens of his experiences as a touring musician, educator and activist. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

On the face of it, Red Baraat is a dhol-driven big band full of brass instruments and drums (both the dhol and drumset keep the groove going), rooted in Bhangra music (Punjabi dance music), who bring a party with them wherever they go. On their l2018 record, Sound the People, they combine the sounds of South Asian diaspora, along with jazz, hip-hop, psychedelia, and a bit of Caribbean music, to draw attention to issues of migration, colonialism, and our current political climate. The record blends instruments, cultures, and offers an aural tribute to "the way diversity makes, and has always made, America great.” With songs that make a joyfully and defiantly disruptive ruckus for dancing, the band Red Baraat plays in-studio (Archives, 2018). Watch the full session here: Watch the individual songs below:
After thirteen years on the road at the front of his global dance group Red Baraat, percussionist-songwriter Sunny Jain was especially affected by the constrictions of COVID. But, ever the optimist, Jain began sifting through his rolodex and soon formed a half-hundred intercontinental collective willing to help out in the writing and recording process of a […]
What would it mean if every citizen was a revolutionary optimist? On this episode of The Future City Podcast, we speak with singer, songwriter, activist and racial justice educator Sonny Singh. Sonny is the original member of the Brooklyn Bhangra outfit Red Baraat and also co-founded the political rock band Outernational and recorded an album produced by Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine. Sonny speaks with us about institutional racism, the power of digital spaces for activists and why he is a revolutionary optimist through and through.
Acclaimed jazz drummer, composer and dhol player Sunny Jain is most recently known for his work in the band Red Baraat. He took the time to join us in the studio today to discuss what it was that sparked his passion for the drums at age 10 and what he did to keep it going.
The group Red Baraat has become synonymous with a raucous good time, a celebratory mix of bhangra – the dance music of the Punjab region, New Orleans horns, go-go and a bit of hip-hop besides. They’re led by drummer-composer Sunny Jain, who plays the dhol, a traditional two-headed drum slung over the shoulder. A talented and energetic army of horns, guitar, and percussion instruments rounds out the lineup, wedding the bhangra roots of the dhol to a N’awlins brass funk ‘n’ street party. The band played a set for us at Brooklyn Bowl in June 2019 and it ruled. Enjoy. (-Caryn Havlik) Set list: Mast Kalander Tunak Tunak Tun Shruggy Ji Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna Gaadi of Truth

Tune in for a brand new episode of Snacky Tunes as Darin Bresnitz is in conversation with Courtney Nichols, co-founder of Disco Dining Club. Disco Dining Club is a bi-monthly culinary excursion steeped in all the excess, debauchery & hedonism of disco. Each dinner features cuisine from a renowned chef, unlimited oysters, an open bar provided by local microbreweries, wineries and distilleries, an all-vinyl disco DJ set, a live performance, multiple, thematic installations, and an invite-only crowd of cultural tastemakers – all donning decadent attire while partaking in a night of disco escapades. It is the intent of Disco Dining Club to take the warehouse scene out of the underground and into the dining room that asks but one thing of guests: to consume everything. In the second half of the show, Greg Bresnitz is in studio with Miwi La Lupa. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Buffalo, NY now living in New York City, Miwi is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and is an original member of New York bands Red Baraat, Thought, and Knights on Earth. He has performed, toured and recorded with David Byrne/St. Vincent, Femi Kuti, Charlie Hunter, Conor Oberst, Bill Frisell, Spoon, Lou Reed, Antibalas, Mike Gordon Band, Noah and the Whale, The Impressions, Michael Leonhart, Nublu Orchestra (Butch Morris), Red Baraat, El P, Slide Hampton, Michael Franti, MMW, The Dap Kings, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Mocean Worker, Brazilian Girls, Fela! on Broadway/Lagos, Ozomatli, Thought, Beyondo, Knights on Earth, Smoota, Kenny Wollesen, and Les McCann.

This was my globalFEST surprise. Imagine a New Orleans street band playing Indian Bollywood tunes with a go-go beat — you can't? Then just listen, because your day is about to get better. Red Baraat is the only bhangra brass band in North America. Hailing from New York City and formed in 2008, the group uses their improvisational sound to blend the dhol, a double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum, with brass funk. It's a crazy blast of fun.
