We are delighted to host a dear friend, Tao Ruspoli, on this episode of the Mangu.tv podcast series. Tao is a filmmaker, photographer, musician and co-founder of the Bombay Beach Biennale an experiment in integrating art, philosophy, performance and community building. In 2001 Tao transformed an old school bus into a mobile digital video studio and spent several years living and travelling in the bus making short films and documentaries with an eclectic collective of fellow travellers. He then made the feature films, Fix (2008), and Being in the World (2010), both with Mangusta productions. After divorcing in 2011 which led to his last film, Monogamish (2014), Tao made his way to the desert discovering a love for both the high desert near Joshua Tree and the low desert in Bombay beach. In Bombay beach, he has gathered a community of artists who are using their insight and creativity to transform a town that was most often described as ‘post-apocalyptic'. The New York Times called The Bombay Beach Biennale ‘the anti-burning man' in so far as their goal is pretty much to leave a trace. Tao joins Giancarlo for a well-overdue catch-up. The conversation follows psychedelics, consensual non-monogamy, community & radical living. Tao shares his thoughts on authentic living, his love for eccentric people and places, and how that led to the co-founding of The Bombay Beach Biennale. Their vision at Bombay beach is to ‘privilege art as a meaningful tool for community building, social change and political activism'.

On a little known shore inland from Los Angeles lies a post apocalyptic seaside town and one of the art world's most interesting happenings. Founded in 2015, Bombay Beach Biennale is a renegade celebration of art, music, and philosophy. Pushing through a few hours of sleep, cofounder Tao Ruspoli and I sat down at the Biennale for a conversation. On the show we discuss the ecological and philosophical paradox of the Salton Sea and the strange fate of Bombay Beach. Tao shares why great art is made from irresolvable contradictions and inhospitable environments. We explore this year's “Questioning Hierarchy” theme and Tao reveals how Bombay Beach changed him. We invite festival producer Dulcinee DeGuere and Neuroscientist Dr. Patrick House on stage to share the art of facilitation and intrusive déjà vu. Finally Tao shares his vision of life as a festival and how the existence of death is what makes meaning possible. Tao Ruspoli an Italian-American filmmaker, photographer, musician, and co-founder of The Bombay Beach Biennale. His films include Fix, Being in the World, and the 2017 exploration of polyamory, Monogamish. Dulcinee DeGuere is also a filmmaker, this was her first year producing the Biennale. Tao hosts the Being in the World Podcast with neuroscientist Dr Patrick House. Bombay Beach Biennale transforms abandoned housing, vacant lots, and decaying shoreline into a unique canvas for creative expression. Artists, philosophers, creators and makers across many mediums donate their time and talents to the volunteer-led happening. Tao Ruspoli is monogamish. After his very public divorce with a celebrity actress, the Italian prince (yes, literally a prince) set out on a journey to figure out society’s obsession with monogamy and marriage. That journey became the film Monogamish, out in theaters now. “Why do marriage and monogamy exist?” Ruspoli asks during this fascinating Manwhore Podcast. Hear us search for an answer in this discussion of polyamory and ethical nonmonogamy (and monogamy)! PLUS: relationship anarchy, content, Craigslist Chronicles, ManwhoreCon, masculinity, and privacy! The concepts of marriage and monogamy have been around for ages, but does that mean they’re right for us all? On today’s show, Emily is joined by Tao Ruspoli, writer and director of his new film Monogamish, to talk about how relationships have evolved and expanded. Emily and Tao discuss his inspirations for making his movie, his own journey surrounding monogamy, and how we can talk to our partners about the relationships we want. The two also give their advice on how to move forward after breakups, how to let go of an infidelity, and worries over leaving the swinger lifestyle. This show is full of insight, great discussion, and raises the question– is monogamy for everyone? Tune in! When Debra was 17, she fell in love with a man 30 years older than she who happened to be an Italian prince known throughout Europe for his creatively bohemian lifestyle. They had two sons together, one of whom is my friend Tao Ruspoli (episodes 3 and 115). Debra was generous in sharing some of her incredible life story with me -- but more importantly, in sharing her very clean and unpretentious approach to a life that's rich in pretty much every way possible.

Tao is one of the most interesting people I know. His father hung out with Salvador Dali, Fellini, and Brigit Bardot. He can trace his family back 1200 years, was married for seven years to film/TV star Olivia Wilde, has made films about his passions—which range from philosophy to flamenco to the nature of love.
