This week's EYE ON NPI is looking at itsy-bitsy-teensy-weensy little rechargeable batteries that can keep your micro-power electronics running for many years without needing any maintenance from your users: it's Panasonic's VL/ML Series Lithium Rechargeable Coin Batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic/lithium-rechargeable-coin-batteries). These are small, solderable batteries much like the coin cell batteries you're used to replacing in watches, toys, and other gadgets..but this time they can be recharged in-circuit to make maintenance effortless. We've covered lots of batteries and battery holders on EYE ON NPI - from enormous lead acid batteries to tiny coin cells (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/batteries-non-rechargeable-primary/). These are an essential part of the engineer's repertoire as so many products need to work when not plugged into the wall. We use coin cells a lot in our design work: there's nothing as compact and they have great energy density. But they're typically 'primary cells' - not rechargeable. That might be fine if you're using them for something like a remote control (https://support.apple.com/en-us/101261) or a small toy. But they do eventually need to be replaced, which can be a user frustration. For that reason, many products that used to have primary cells like AA's or coin batteries have slowly transitioned to embedding lithium polymer pouches. You can get rechargeable lipoly batteries in 100 mAh or less! (https://www.digikey.com/short/7njnd057) However, there may be some cases where you still want something really really tiny, like say 9mm diameter and under 1mm thick - a size only achievable with a coin cell - but without dealing with removing and replacing a battery every few weeks or months. Especially if we're talking about something that is going to be plugged in once in a while, or where the coin cell is a fall-back. This comes up often with devices that have real time clocks (RTCs) - such as clocks, computers, laptops, tablets, watches, GPS units (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5440), etc. They might have a main battery or power system that can run a microcontroller/CPU and display plus peripherals, but you still want to keep time and maybe an alarm setting when the main power cuts off. Historically, folks have just used coin batteries - ideally replaceable ones - but sometimes not as in the case of the DS1287 (https://theretroweb.com/chip/documentation/ds1287-647b3602989d3299594321.pdf) which had the coin battery sealed inside! If you're designing a product today that needs an RTC battery, we'd say take a good look at the Panasonic's VL/ML Series Lithium Rechargeable Coin Batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic/lithium-rechargeable-coin-batteries). No holder required: they come with tabs to solder directly onto a PCB in vertical or horizontal orientations. And they come in a variety of sizes from the 20mm / 45mAh to 12mm / 7mAh and even smaller. Note that as expected, you're going to get less capacity than a primary cell, so these are good when you think you'll get recharged every few days or weeks. Don't forget: you will absolutely need a proper lithium charger to recharge these batteries. We've got plenty of charger breakouts you can use, we particularly like the bq25185 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/6091/25805553) which you can easily configure for the 1C current charge rate to match your Panasonic Lithium Rechargeable Coin Batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic/lithium-rechargeable-coin-batteries) They can all handle 1000+ cycles, we like the bq in particular because it has power-path which will help avoid unnecessary discharging/cycling. Ready for a tiny burst of power to keep your clocks a-tickin'? You can pick up a wide selection of Panasonic's VL/ML Series Lithium Rechargeable Coin Batteries (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic/lithium-rechargeable-coin-batteries) at DigiKey right now! They're in stock in a range of sizes and configurations for immediate shipment - don't forget that like all Lithium batteries you may need to ship ground, so order now and you'll get those bite-sized batteries shipped within the hour for immediate integration. Trump's Tariffs: What It Means for Preppers | Episode 348 Tariffs might seem like just another political move, but they have real-world effects on prices, supply chains, and everyday goods. In this episode, we're diving into how Trump's tariffs impact preppers and what you should be stocking up on before prices rise. Tariffs are taxes placed on imported goods, making them more expensive to buy. Trump's latest tariff policies target industries such as steel, electronics, agriculture, and consumer goods. This means price hikes across a wide range of products, from vehicles to food to home essentials. For preppers, this translates into increased costs for supplies we rely on. Even if you prefer to buy American-made goods, many components still come from overseas, which drives up prices overall. The most immediate impact of tariffs is price inflation. When businesses pay more for imports, they pass those costs onto consumers. This can result in: Higher food prices due to increased costs for imported ingredients and fertilizers More expensive electronics, tools, and vehicle parts Supply chain disruptions, leading to shortages or delays As a prepper, planning ahead is key to minimizing these effects. Now is the time to take inventory and stockpile critical supplies before prices jump. Here are the top categories to focus on: Non-perishables (rice, beans, canned goods, pasta) Freeze-dried meals and long-term storage foods Coffee, sugar, and other imported staples Prescription medications (if possible, request 90-day supplies) First-aid kits, bandages, over-the-counter meds Antibiotics and essential vitamins Rechargeable batteries and solar panels Power tools and hand tools Radios, flashlights, and generators Motor oil, filters, and spare parts Tires and maintenance tools Fuel stabilizers for long-term storage Clothing and shoes (especially for growing kids) Basic home repair supplies (nails, screws, wood, plumbing parts) Cleaning products and hygiene essentials While stocking up is important, you also need a long-term strategy: Buy American-made products to support domestic production and reduce dependency on imports. Bulk buy before price hikes to save money in the long run. Learn DIY skills like repairing electronics, gardening, and sewing to increase self-sufficiency. Look into bartering for goods and services to offset rising costs. Tariffs may come and go, but preppers know the importance of staying ahead of economic changes. Stock up now, develop new skills, and keep your household prepared for whatever comes next. What are you stocking up on to prepare for rising prices? We reviewed the SofaBaton X1 last november and felt it came close to being the Harmony Replacement. It worked but it still had some rough edges. Well, SofaBaton is back with the X1S ($189.99). The X1S has enhanced performance and compatibility compared to the X1. The X1S boasts features like “Raise to Wake” and supports a vast array of devices, over 500,000 across IR, Bluetooth, and WiFi thanks to its use of the “cloud code library”. There is even a Smart SofaBaton App, that allows you to manage devices, personalize buttons and activities. The X1S makes use of a hub that offers 360 degree control, 40 foot infrared range, and has support for IR blasters for devices in different rooms or in cabinets. There is also support for hands free control with Alexa and Google Assistant, personalized macro buttons, and API integration allows for third parties to further expand on the X1S' capabilities. The X1S also has backlit buttons, and a 45 day battery. The full feature list is below: Features: SofaBaton X1S Universal Remote: Enhanced performance and compatibility over X1 Supports 500,000+ devices (IR, Bluetooth, WiFi) Includes powerful cloud code library Smart SofaBaton App: Device management and customization Favorite channel organization Remote tracking and phone backup control Effortless OneClick Activities: Initiates predefined device settings with one command Example: "Music Time" activity for automated device control Powerful Hub: 360degree control 40foot infrared range 2 IR blasters for signal coverage Can be hidden in cabinet Voice Control with Alexa and Google Assistant Personalized Macro Buttons: Customizable key functions Create sequences for complex operations API Integration: Integration with other applications Personalized control through simple configurations Highlight Design: Raise To Wake function Backlight buttons Rechargeable battery lasting up to 45 days Thumb scroll wheel for quick device switching Setup: The setup process started out intuitive, but it required additional effort and time to fine tune the configuration. The Harmony had some configuration issues too but the X1S was a little more cumbersome. Once you grasp the app's workflow you can work through the issues. The app provides a step by step guide to help you quickly connect your devices. Like other remotes you can personalize buttons and set up macros for specific functions allowing you to customize the remote to suit your preferences. It took me 90 minutes to get my system (AppleTV, Oppo UHD Player, SONY TV, and Yamaha Receiver) up and running. Like the Harmony, once you have added your devices you then create activities. Then you test and then you tweak and you finally get it dialed in. One oddity was how the remote dealt with power. It has a concept of the steady state of the power setting for each device, which I thought was odd. So our tip is just say that your devices are always powered off. Then go into the startup settings and add the power on command for your devices. Do the opposite for the shutdown settings. This caused me at least 30 minutes of grief in setting it up. But once the setup was done the remote worked flawlessly! Performance: The SofaBaton X1S remote's build quality is top notch! And battery life is as advertised. The display is simple, clean and nothing fancy. I had to add delays between some commands for some activities to respond properly. The scroll wheel on the X1S is tighter and smoother than the X1, providing a more precise user experience. The inclusion of a USB C charging port allows usage while charging which is a nice added touch. Syncing commands from the phone to the remote takes a long time which can be annoying while making tweaks to dial in the exact commands you want. But once it's set up you no longer have to worry about this. Also, the battery charging level is only visible from the main screen. It would be nice if you could see it from any screen. We have used the remote for over a week and the family approves. No missed commands, easy to use. I still like my Harmony a little better but I am confident that the Sofabaton will improve with better configuration software and become the replacement to the Harmony we have all been wanting! Pros: Pleasing design and buttons with solid tactile response. Backlit buttons are great for dark rooms. The IR blaster sends signals omnidirectional. Handy "find the remote" button. Cons: The setup process proved challenging, particularly concerning the power settings. An unusual default configuration involved separate power on and power off buttons for each device, such as my receiver and TV. No Direct Number input No Dock for charging. Plugging in a cable is cumbersome Sync times are too slow The remote does not emit IR commands.

When it comes to our finance tips, we haven't covered reusable batteries as this seems like a no-brainer; and that exactly a case; however, sometimes we need a reminder. Rechargeable batteries have been around since I was a kid in the 70's and they juiced up my remote control cars and my giant dual tape deck boom box radio. Now that we are in the 2020's we still have an insatiable need for batteries for just about anything due to the advanced technology in our daily lives. So let's run through some stats on batteries with the most common type which are Single and double A. When it comes to these rechargeable batteries they will cost more upfront; but the money that you save is far and away better than buying disposable batteries. Disposables last longer for a one-time use; however, most rechargeable batteries have at least 1,000 - 2,000 charges before they expire. The other factor is that in many states, the batteries are not recycled and therefore end up in a landfill. In fact, California considers them hazardous waste.Social Media https://www.instagram.com/somm.podcast/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChec5qcZBcGkIhUU3belNDwhttps://www.tiktok.com/@somm.podcast?lang=enhttps://www.facebook.com/somm.podcasthttps://twitter.com/Somm_podcastThe bottom line is that viable product solutions are being offered at blistering pace without sacrificing quality while improving the environment - and as always your pocketbook thanks you. Hey everyone! It's episode 290, so that means it's time for another solo show featuring me. Every 10 episodes I do a solo show or feature an extra special guest, like my husband. Can you believe I have come out with a new episode every single Wednesday since I started this show in summer 2016? If you count the bonus episodes, I've done, it's probably more than 300 shows. If you're new here, welcome! If you're a returning listener, thank you so much for your support. Today's show is all about being more sustainable and living with less. I'm sharing 25 simple tips for living with less and living more sustainably. 4:05 – Crunchy-lite I'm not a hippy tree-hugger, but I like to think of myself as crunchy-lite. I can't fit all my trash in a mason jar, but I think we produce way too much waste. We dispose of our stuff without thinking about the impact that that stuff has on the environment. 5:26 – Dandora dump A few years ago I went to Kenya and got to visit the Dandora dump, the largest landfill in east Africa. It was one of the most horrifying things I have ever seen. Tons of trash, including brand new shirts with logos of the losing Super Bowl team, were dumped there. 25 simple tips for living with less and living more sustainably 9:10 – Reusable straws 10:32 – Reusable water bottle, coffee tumbler 11:15 – Zero-waste or refillable bath products 12:52 – Refillable soaps and house cleaners 14:31 – Recycling bin in the bathroom 15:04 – Reusable grocery bags 16:19 – Reusable produce bags 16:57 – Local produce boxes or farmer's markets 17:35 – Reusable beeswax plastic wrap 18:33 – Reusable snack bags and lunch containers 19:36 – Cloth napkins 20:44 – Handkerchiefs 21:20 – Reusable muslin face cloths 22:16 – Washable makeup remover cloth 22:59 – Menstrual cup 23:52 – Cloth diapers 24:48 – Roll-free toilet paper or bidets 26:09 – Rechargeable batteries 26:15 – Shop consignment 26:38 – Repair clothing 27:47 – Sustainable toys 28:14 – Go paperless 28:37 – Unsubscribe from mailing lists 29:05 – Borrow books from the library FEATURED QUOTES You truly have absolutely no idea the kind of impact you have on my life and this community. It means so much to me. I'm not like a hippy tree-hugger, but I like to think of myself as crunchy-lite. We dispose of our stuff without thinking about the impact that that stuff has on the environment. Thank you to our partner of the show!
