A proposito di Achille Loria bisogna ricordare i principali documenti in cui si trovano le principali «stranezze»: 1° Sull'influenza sociale dell'aeroplano, nella «Rassegna Contemporanea» diretta dal Colonna di Cesarò e da (Vincenzo) Picardi del 1912: in questo articolo si incontra la teoria sull'emancipazione operaia dalla coercizione della fabbrica per mezzo degli svolazzamenti sugli aeroplani unti di vischio. Tutto l'articolo è un monumento mostruoso di insulsaggini e stoltezze: la caduta del credito fiduciario, lo sfrenarsi delle birbonate sessuali (adulteri, seduzioni), l'ammazzamento sistematico dei portinai per le cadute dei cannocchiali, la teoria del grado di moralità secondo l'altezza al livello del mare, con la proposta pratica di rigenerare i delinquenti costruendo le prigioni sui monti o addirittura su immensi aeroplani che stiano sempre ad alta quota ecc. 2° La conferenza tenuta a Torino durante la guerra e pubblicata nella «Nuova Antologia» (del 1916 o 1917) dove l'unico «documento concreto» sul Dolore universale (deve essere anche questo il titolo della conferenza) riportato era la nota di ciò che costa la «claque» agli attori di teatro (da una statistica fissata dal Reina) e dove si trova questo ragionamento: «la natura provvida ha creato l'antidoto contro questo avvelenamento universale del dolore, dando ai poverelli che sono costretti a pernottare all'aria aperta una pelle più spessa». 3° L'articolo pubblicato nel «Palvese» di Trieste verso il 1910 o 1911 riguardante la scienza del linguaggio e intitolato press'a poco: Perché i bergamaschi triplicano e i veneziani scempiano. Questo articolo era stato inviato dal Loria al Comitato organizzato a Trieste per le onoranze ad Attilio Hortis in occasione del cinquantenario della sua attività letteraria e che doveva mettere insieme una Miscellanea in onore del festeggiato (uscita infatti in quel torno di tempo). Il Comitato non poteva pubblicare l'articolo per la sua insulsaggine, ma non voleva neppure mancare di riguardi al Loria che era un esponente illustre della scienza italiana: se la cavò, scrivendo al Loria che la Miscellanea era ormai completa e che il suo articolo era stato passato al (settimanale) letterario il «Palvese». L'articolo espone un aspetto (quello linguistico) della teoria loriana sull'influenza dell'altimetria sulla civiltà: i montanari, moralmente più puri, sono fisicamente più robusti e «triplicano» le consonanti, la gente di pianura (guai poi se sta al livello del mare come i veneziani) invece, oltre che moralmente depravata, è anche fisicamente degenerata e «scempia» le consonanti. 4° La prefazione alla 1a edizione del Corso di Economia Politica importante anche perché vi si trova la istoria del suo «ritrovamento» del materialismo storico: vi si espone la teoria della connessione tra «misticismo» e «sifilide». 5° Lo scritto nella «Riforma Sociale» del Settembre-Ottobre 1929: Documenti ulteriori a suffragio dell'economismo storico. Questi cinque documenti sono i più vistosi che io ricordo, ma la quistione è interessante appunto perché nel Loria non si tratta di qualche caso di obnubilamento dell'intelligenza occasionale, sia pure con ricadute. Si tratta di un filone, di una continuità sistematica, che accompagna tutta la sua carriera letteraria. Non si può neanche negare che il Loria sia uomo d'un certo ingegno e che abbia del giudizio. In tutta una serie di articoli le «stranezze» appaiono qua e là, e anche di un certo tipo, legate cioè a determinati modi di pensiero. Per esempio si è vista la «teoria» altimetrica apparire nella quistione dell'aeroplano e in quella «linguistica». Così in un articoletto pubblicato nella «Proda» (o «Prora», usciva a Torino durante la guerra, diretto da un certo Cipri-Romanò, un giornalettucolo un po' losco, certamente di bassissima speculazione ai margini della guerra e dell'antidisfattismo) si dividevano i protagonisti della guerra in mistici (gl'imperi centrali) e positivisti (Clemenceau e Lloyd George): ricchi di elementi sono la poesia Al mio bastone pubblicata nella «Nuova Antologia» (durante la guerra) e l'articolo sull'epistolario di Marx (pure nella «Nuova Antologia»). La «leziosità letteraria» notata dal Croce in Loria è un elemento secondario del suo squilibrio, ma che ha una certa importanza in quanto si manifesta continuamente. Un altro elemento è la pretesa all'«originalità» intellettuale a tutti i costi. Un certo opportunismo di bassa estrazione non manca spesso: ricordo due articoli pubblicati a distanza breve, uno nella «Gazzetta del Popolo» (ultra reazionaria), l'altro nel «Tempo» di Pippo Naldi (nittiano), sullo stesso argomento (la Russia) e con un'immagine del Macaulay che nell'uno era usata in un senso e nell'altro nel senso opposto. A proposito dell'osservazione di Croce sui «servi a spasso» e sulla loro importanza nella sociologia loriana, ricordare un capocronaca della «Gazzetta del Popolo» del '19 o '20 in cui si parla degli intellettuali come di quelli che tengono dritta la «scala d'oro» sulla quale sale il popolo, con avvertimenti al popolo di tenersi buoni questi intellettuali ecc. Loria non è un caso teratologico individuale: è l'esemplare più compiuto e finito di una serie di rappresentanti di un certo strato intellettuale di un certo periodo; in generale degli intellettuali positivisti che si occupano della quistione operaia e che più o meno credono di approfondire, o correggere, o superare il Marxismo. Enrico Ferri – Arturo Labriola – lo stesso Turati potrebbero dare una messe di osservazioni e di aneddoti. In Luzzatti, in un altro campo sarebbe da mietere. Ma non bisogna dimenticare Guglielmo Ferrero e Corrado Barbagallo. Nel Barbagallo forse la manifestazione è più occasionale che negli altri: pure il suo scritto sul capitalismo antico pubblicato nella «Nuova Rivista Storica» del 1929 è estremamente sintomatico (con la postilla un po' comica che segue al successivo articolo del Sanna). In generale dunque il Lorismo è un carattere di certa produzione letteraria e scientifica del nostro paese (molti documenti di esso si trovano nella «Critica» di Croce, nella «Voce» di Prezzolini, nell'«Unità» di Salvemini) connesso alla scarsa organizzazione della cultura e quindi alla mancanza di controllo e di critica.
