Dr. Taylor Brana was a Resident Physician at the time of the original recording (now at attending) in Psychiatry, Creator of The Happy Doc Podcast and developer of educational platforms that utilize voice-first technology. Our interview is really two separate interviews in one. In the first, we cover his podcast, where he interviews physicians on how they manage to continue finding fulfillment and enjoyment in their lives and practices in a world of crushing debt, wasteful administrative burdens, and so much clicking. We discuss the recurring themes that he sees from his guests. He started this as a med student and continues with it in residency, so we also talk about how he has managed to get the approval from his institutions for this. We then talk about his voice-interactive studying software, MedFlashGo (Medical Flashcards on the Go), which is the first of its kind. We talk about how he managed to do this in residency and how he took it from an idea to the final product. He has created over 200+ podcast episodes featuring TED Talk speakers, top level executives, physician leaders, influencers, and more. He has been featured on numerous podcasts and articles discussing concepts around happiness, fulfillment, success, entrepreneurship, and creativity. He is the CEO and Co-Founder of three voice-interactive education platforms geared towards pre-medical, medical, and dental students, with plans to create more. Taylor has a passion for inspiring others to reach towards their potential and dreams. Learn from Jay Doran The Culture Man! Jay transformed a failing gym business into a six-figure company within 6 months. He found that the truly transformational part of the business was happening at the hours between 12 to 1 o'clock. What was happening from 12 to 1 o'clock you might ask? His team was working on their company culture. Culture is a topic that is immensely important and impacts the climate of our workplace and beyond. Who better to learn this topic than from Jay Doran, Culture Coach, Public Speaker, and Polymath. Join Dr. Taylor Brana on this conversational journey as we learn why Culture Matters and how we can establish improved workspaces with cultural alignment. Links: Website: http://jaydoranculture.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6nv0WN0vRPv-mAQub3S3RQ (1173 Videos Worth Of Content) In this Conversation We Learn About: This conversation can inspire a thought, that may lead to a new idea, that can drive a new action or behavior. All culture rises and falls with leadership You need to get really clear on your culture's mission, vision, values, and effectively communicate this with your team. Mission: The mission is what you want to do every day to achieve a certain vision Vision: The visual representation of your goal Values: Embodied character traits to successfully work on the mission and achieve the vision How leadership communicates and acts matters and impacts all individuals following the leadership. Knowing something versus actualizing and being something are two completely different levels of communication Highly competent and confident individuals become leaders in their field. To take their impact to the next level, they must effectively understand how to communicate otherwise the leader risks losing passing on their knowledge forever. Learning from multiple sources and areas of study helps expand humanity to a new level. We did not get far as a people by specializing in one field. We must understand multiple disciplines such as sociology, psychology, neuropsychology, leadership, sales, etc. Note: at the time of recording Jay had read/listened to around 80 books this year The Idea Has To Be Greater Than Yourself The business must have a great idea that [has] all these people, with their own personal internal character, come together and agree that the idea is just a little more important than all of them. Or else what happens is it becomes a me me me me me organization.” -Jay Doran The Happy Doc: The Happy Doc is a podcast, website, and movement with a vision to create a world where all physicians can thrive and establish better care for their patients. "How do I maintain my identity while in medical training?" This is a question posed by one of our listeners. Dr. Taylor Brana offers some insights and thoughts on this topic. Please also refer to the episode with work-life integration with Dr. Qaali Hussein which is useful when it comes to this topic. Some ideas include: 1. Continue to pursue the interests you have built prior to starting training 2. Join an intramural group, form a club, or attend a class that is scheduled. This will allow you to maintain your interest via social pressure **Make sure to make these events mandatory and schedule it as important since your work is likely more time-consuming than it previously was ** 3. Consider ways to have your interest at scale (such as a blog, vlog, podcast, class), in order to inspire others to take care of themselves as well. 4. Maintain and nurture the relationships that have been vital for you (unfortunately you might not be able to make time for everyone as you had previously). **Additionally, don't feel bad about taking care of yourself first. There is only so much time in day** We hope you enjoyed this Happy Doc Daily for today! Check us out on iTunes: http://bit.ly/happydocpodcast. Episode 56: Title: Talented Pediatricians Take On Marijuana, Mindfulness, And Music - Nicholas Chadi M.D. Summary: This 57th episode of The Happy Doc features an interview by Dr. Taylor Brana with Dr. Nicholas Chadi M.D., who shares his medical journey. He talks about addiction medicine, his advice to teens about marijuana use, a mindfulness practice involving washing your hands, Why life doesn't end with medical school, and what makes Nicholas Chadi feel fulfilled. Show Notes: ● Dr. Nicholas Chadi M.D is a pediatrician that specializes in Adolescent Medicine and is the first pediatric addiction medicine fellow in North America. ● Dr. Chadi is also a musician, writer, a researcher, a mindfulness practitioner provider, and a sports enthusiast. ● His parents bought the camp he used to work at as a team, and still run it in Quebec. ● Talking about marijuana legalization is healthy, but it is how we talk about it that matters. There needs to be more education about it to make teens more aware of the risks. ● “The S.T.O.P Practice” is recommended for anxiety and tension which stands for: Stop, Take 3 Breaths, Observe how the air coming into your mouth feels, and think about how you will Proceed with the rest of your day. ● You can anchor this moment by washing your hands mindfully, being focused on this process to stay more present. ● One of his hardest decisions was to choose between advanced music study (piano, Classical, Jazz) and medical school. ● Music makes Dr. Chadi more relaxed, more present, and a more passionate physician. ● By breaking medical study with his practice of music it proved to be more energizing and provided balance. ● Tip: Don't suppress your creativity by only focusing on the logic required for medicine. ● Scheduling and discipline are crucial to balancing your career with your personal life. Hey everyone, this is Taylor Brana, the founder of The Happy Doc! I wanted to do a little reflection piece this week, after finishing my first month of intern year in the Emergency department, and starting Internal Medicine. First off, while challenging, I've learned a lot through being an intern. I have quite enjoyed the challenge of the experience, and I'm getting lessons from this that will help me for a life time. My goal for this episode is to reflect on some of the things I've learned from my time thus far, and sprinkling in some advice I've gotten from guests I've had, right here, on the podcast. I will be speaking from my current experiences (and hopefully not breaking HIPAA in the process). Topics of the conversation: # Doing the right thing # Knowing the patient # Sleep # Comfortable shoes # Keep moving (using opportunities) # Med Students are awesome # Protection # Taking note of the flow (anticipate) # Having a system # Communication and Follow-up # Serenity Prayer/Stoicism # Be humble for the patient (if you don't know ask) # Being a team player # Audio books/Podcasts # Recharging # Staying inspired *** Join The Happy Doc Team!
