It will rot your brain, Slackers, but who doesn't love some goold old fashioned network TV?Remember every fall when they would announce the new tv season? It was always exciting to have the new episodes of our favorite shows, but what shows really ruled the airwaves for the season,Not unlike professional sports, each TV season was actually a competition between networks, each vying for ratings dominance. I know that in the late 70s and early 80s, ABC was the dominant network, with shows like Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company, and Mork & Mindy. By the mid 80s, NBC would go on a big run, with shows like The Cosby Show, Cheers, Family Ties, and A Different World. Surprisingly, many spinoffs actually outperformed the shows that launched them. And did you know that despite having the most viewed episode ever (at the time), M*A*S*H was never the top show of any season? With streaming being the way most of us consume programming nowadays, this episode made me hearken back to a simpler time - The Big Three networks and the September through April program season. Then we took the summer off - and TV didn't matter.
In the second of our two-part episode, host Cynthia Bemis Abrams continues talking with Elva Green about her book, "The Jeffersons: A Fresh Look Back," which offers insights, interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and rare photos from the iconic TV series. Ms. Green reflects on one of the best episodes from the seventh season of the show, which featured a tour-de-force performance by Isabel Sanford (Louise Jefferson). We listen to classic interview clips: Marla Gibbs (Florence) assesses Ms. Sanford's contribution to the series and Ms. Sanford recounts her professional friendship with Zara Cully (Mother Jefferson). We also look back at Ms. Sanford's 1981 Emmy acceptance speech As with other programs under the guidance of Norman Lear, “The Jeffersons” appealed to a wide audience and often tackled serious, ground-breaking subject matter. Please join us as we discuss its legacy. Wouldn't you like to get away, Slackers? This week combines my love of music and my love of 70's & 80's sitcoms - my top ten favorite sitcom theme songs! From Three's Company to Cheers, the theme songs were often as iconic as the shows themselves. In most cases, you really did get a feel for what the show was about just by the music that was chosen to accompany the opening credits. Sure, there was at least one "theme doctor" with multiple songs on the list, but even that was part of the appeal - remember TGIF?Hopefully, some of these tunes will warm your heart and bring you back to a "simpler" time - with fond memories of gathering around the television to enjoy some family friendly fare.
What'chu talkin' 'bout, Slackers?!Some of my earliest memories of prime time TV are of the good old American sitcom. But there were some classic sitcoms that had long enough runs to cross over the decade line - from the 70s into the 80s.All in the Family. The Jeffersons. Three's Company. Diff'rent Strokes. And so many more. Happy Days first hit the air the year was I was born, yet Richie and Fonzie were also a big part of my adolescence. Many of these shows had long, long runs. Was it because they were really that good or just because there was less competition at the time? I think it was a litle of both since the very best of them hold up even today. Not to mention the number of future A listers (in front of and behind the camera) that got their first taste of fame being cast in one of these shows - George Clooney, anyone? If I can pull it off, I am going to try and bring back the phrase, "Kiss my grits"!Subscribe today!
Norman, Lear, one of the most inspiring people I've ever talked to, will turn 100 in July. Lear says that one reason he's still around is that he spends so much time laughing. He teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel to produce the Emmy award-winning show Live in Front of a Studio Audience which recreates episodes of Lear's sitcoms like Good Times and All in the Family. Lear's other hit shows include Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, Good Times and Maude. I spoke to Norman Lear when he was 95 about life, death and everything in between. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Alex Wolfe and Annika Hoeim. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
Ken has had some “unpleasant" encounters with Hollywood agents. Not many, but enough to fill an entertaining episode of dish. More podcasts at WAVE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/artist/wave-podcast-network/1437831426

Those were the days: When Archie Bunker was a television character and not a Trump supporter, when you could turn truth into humor and not get cancelled, and when you had a different brown-on-brown-on-brown polyester house dress for every day of the week.
This week, Tony and Mark explore what they believe to be the golden era of sitcoms: the 70's. Come and knock on our door as they take you through a stroll that will take you from 1970 to 1979 and all over the country.
Scott and Steve address a potentially “cancelable” topic in racial slurs; however, they take the safe (space) route by addressing only slurs for white people - “Cracker” and “Honky” - so they can say whatever they want! Accordingly, it only makes sense that the guys also explore the various possible origins of “Mayonnaise.” Plus, learn why Steve is uniquely qualified for this episode, how to purchase whips by the barrel, the tale of the hunky steelworker, and George Jefferson. If you get offended, just pretend that the guys are talking about conservative, straight white people. Sit your cracker-ass down, and listen to this episode of Origin of Speackies, you honky motherf#$%er! Become a Speakcies Supporter!
