Joining hosts Philionaire, Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony of Louis York, and Tamone Bacon, Kym pulls back the curtain on a Cleveland-to-Hollywood journey built on fearless hustle, hard-won mentorship, and a refusal to ever let the business turn her cold. The conversation winds through her earliest brushes with stardom, starting with the 1994 Pringles commercial that she famously lip-synced, the trailblazing Oh Drama! talk show that quietly set the template for every female-led panel that followed, and an iconic Parkers run alongside Mo'Nique that lit a fire under her own work ethic. Kym opens up about the wild-child energy that powered her onto a Soul Train taping on Gerald Levert's dime, into the 227 studio audience without a ticket, and into a fateful encounter with Marla Gibbs that turned a green Cleveland girl into a working actress overnight. The story of Marla pulling her into a closet on set to protect her during her power struggle with Jackie Harry is one for the books, and Kym tells every drop of it.From there, it's pure tea. Kym revisits the Next Friday slap from DC Curry that left her bruised and bleeding because no one told her she could speak up, the dominatrix scene she didn't realize was being filmed in full, the Curb Your Enthusiasm improv prep sessions with Katt Williams, Buddy Lewis, and Dave Kirchner, and the lifelong sisterhood with Sherri Shepherd that powers their NAACP Image Award winning podcast Two Funny Mamas. She shouts out the upcoming Two Funny Mamas live show at Detroit's Soundboard on Mother's Day weekend, drops gems on the late great Gerald Levert, and reflects on why the older she gets, the more profoundly grateful she is for the mentors who didn't have to put her on but did.Kym also sits in for a lively celebrity Kim showdown (pitting Lil Kim, Kim Kardashian, Kim Burrell, and Kim Fields head-to-head), helps the crew crown the legendary Marla Gibbs with this week's Esther Rolle Award of Black Excellence (The ERBE), and leaves us with what might be the unofficial Kym Whitley life motto: "You don't learn unless you ask." Episode Notes S6E29-- Join us as we come Straight Outta Compton with Cleavon "Jinx" McClendon. He'll be in the house talking all things from Straight Outta Compton to Justified and beyond. Cleavon R. McClendon III was born in Los Angeles, California. Raised by a single mother, he grew up with a flare for the dramatics. Needing somewhere for her son to go during the summer months, Cleavon's mother enrolled him at Marla Gibbs' Acting Studio. It was there that he got bit by the “acting bug.” He had to be walked onto the stage in his first play when he was just 7 years of age. Cleavon's first acting job would be as an extra in Marvel's 1993 superhero comedy film Meteor Man, starring Robert Townsend, Marla Gibbs and a host of well known actors. Cleavon then moved on to Faith Acting Studios. It was there that a lady by the name of Ms. Felicia encouraged his mother to look into him acting professionally. It was during the showcase for Ms Felicia, Wendy Raquel Robinson and Tracy Coley's new acting school, All God's Children, that he was discovered by his first agent, Carolyn Thompson - Goldstein at Media Artist Group. He was just 10 years old. Cleavon followed Carolyn to her next agency at Amsel Eisenstadt and Frazier. During his time with AEF, he would land a recurring role on the 1997 sitcom The Good News, created by Ed Weinberger. In between one of the tapings of an episode involving a pet duck, Mr. Weinberger asked Cleavon if he could cry during a scene. Having never done it before, Cleavon said “I could try.” During the scene to Cleavon's astonishment, he let the tears flow. This only furthered his love for performing. In 1999 he would book a role in a feature film playing the role of Jamal Reed, the younger brother of lead actor Deon Richmond. Cleavon would continue to book roles in the industry such as: Malcolm in the Middle, The Bernie Mac Show, The Game, Girlfriends, Cold Case, 24, House of Payne and other shows. Cleavon's next notable role would come in 2014 as a recurring role in the Amazon Prime series created by Ben Watkins, Hand of God, starring Ron Perlman. He would play Asa Boston, the son of Robert “Bobo” Boston, played by Andre Royo. Cleavon would share the screen with actors such as Ron Perlman, Andre Royo, Garret Dillahunt and Mia Long. Cleavon's big break would come a year later in the 2015 blockbuster feature film Straight Outta Compton, playing the role of Jinx. Cleavon has continued to pursue his career in the years after. "227" is a sitcom that aired on NBC from 1985 to 1990, spanning five seasons and 116 episodes. Created by C.J. Banks and Bill Boulware, it was adapted from a 1978 stage play of the same name. The show was set in a middle-class apartment building in Washington, D.C., and became one of NBC's popular Saturday night staples in the mid-to-late 1980s. It was notable for being a vehicle for Marla Gibbs, who had gained fame on The Jeffersons, and for introducing Jackée and future star Regina King in her television debut. 227 was generally well-received during its early run, praised for Gibbs's lead performance and the strong ensemble cast. Ratings were solid in the first few seasons, though they dipped in later years, leading to cast changes and retooling before the series ended in 1990. In syndication, 227 retained a loyal audience and is remembered as an important sitcom of the 1980s. Listen in as the S1E1 boys deep dive the show's pilot episode, "Honesty". It's about human connection across generations and it's that damn funny. In this first of a two-part episode of Advanced TV Herstory, host Cynthia Bemis Abrams welcomes Elva Green to discuss her book, "The Jeffersons: A Fresh Look Back." Ms. Green shares her personal journey as a writer and the impetus for the book, which offers insights, interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and rare photos from the iconic TV series. Ms. Green interviewed cast and crew members, including the legendary Norman Lear and the incomparable Marla Gibbs, who—after forming a bond with the author—agreed to write the foreword for the book. Ms. Green also speaks fondly of Berlinda Tolbert, Ernest Harden Jr., and others whose willingness to share stories and contacts enhanced her research and writing. Ms. Green's unconventional path to becoming an author began with her desire to inspire her grandson by writing about her father, Eddie Green, an early 1900s black American entertainment pioneer who achieved fame despite the challenges faced by African Americans in the first half of the last century. Listeners are encouraged to shop both of Ms. Green's books. They offer one-of-a-kind information for those interested in entertainment, black history, and well-crafted narratives.
