Tommy also played linebacker on the University of Utah, Fiesta Bowl Championship Team. Listen in as Tommy gives his tips on maintaining your ability to sprint and improving your cardiovascular capacity in general. He then explains how he built up his mental toughness over the years, defining it as “the ability to remain calm under extreme or uncommon circumstances”, and why staying in shape has always been key to doing so. Tommy and I discuss the value of a coach, especially for aspiring athletes and first-time gym-goers, and why newbies should not be setting expectations for themselves at the beginning of their fitness journey. In this episode Adrian dives into his personal perspective on life as a sport. He shares his vision about competition, the value it can bring when it comes to learning lessons and also how it can help you rise to the occasion. He also touches specifically on training with Tommy Hackenbruck and his team at Ute CrossFit as well as winning the affiliate cup in 2017 when the Wasatch Brutes dethroned CrossFit Mayhem. He emphasizes how if they didn't show up with he sole purpose to win that year, they wouldn't have. You don't become a champion on accident.
Absolutely incredible episode today with one of the OGs in CrossFit Tommy Hackenbruck. Tommy has been part of our community for a few months now and has been a great addition to our team here at CrossFit Mountain’s Edge. If you consider yourself driven, competitive, and just always want more this episode is for you. Tommy had a fascinating career in fitness! Amazing college career in football, nearly a decade on top of the CrossFit Games Sport. 7 top 10 finishes individually, 2nd Fittest one year, and 2x CrossFit Games Team Champion with Ute. In addition to being on top of the sport Tommy owned multiple gyms, multiple companies, and currently runs a rehab clinic here in Las Vegas. In this episode we go over attributes of what makes a great champion, his passion in being part of amazing teams, and how a little bit of suffering can go a long way in your life! This guy has done so much and what makes him even more interesting is that he stays under the radar. Tommy is definitely one of the more humble athletes I have ever met. Aside from being dominant in his fitness career, his true passion lies in helping other people.

I met Rob MacDonald (Bobby Maximus) in 2011 as he programmed for our team the first year I went to the Crossfit Games. He also trained two individuals that year, Tommy Hackenbruck and Taylor Richards-Lindsey. We were a hard working group if nothing else. However, when Rob would show up to train us on occasion, I remember thinking that every workout was the hardest one I'd ever done. He communicates with athletes in a way that pushes them to their limits, and he is good at finding each person's buttons. Before accepting a job at Gym Jones, he fought in the UFC in the Light Heavyweight Division. At Gym Jones he is the general manager, and it is there that he has worked with NFL players, professional climbers and skiers, and many more. Physically, this guy is an absolute freak. He can bench 315 for a set of 20, back squats close to 500, and his strength isn't even his strong suit. His strong suit is his engine. He has done some ridiculous things on an airdyne. He has biked for 88 calories in 1 minute, and 900 in 30 minutes!!!!! If a guy can get 300 in 10 minutes, he is considered to be in great great shape. To do that 3x in a row is unbelievable. Enjoy the show.
Tommy Hackenbruck has been one of my best friends and mentors over the last several years and it is only fitting that our very first podcast be with the biggest BRUTE in the game. We have won the Crossfit Games together twice. We have done Sealfit together. We have gone through a lot. The most impressive thing about Tommy is his mental game. The best example I can give of how tough this dude is is my experience with him at Sealfit. There are future Navy Seals in every Kokoro camp class. There were nearly 10 Games athletes. He blew everyone out of the water. Was he in pain? Yes. Did he show it? Not in the least. I finally got to sit down on camera with him and ask him exactly what led to his mental toughness. We talked about steroid use in Crossfit and his experience at the Games as an individual vs. a team. - Mike Cazayoux
Broken Skull Challenge Men's Champ Tommy "Hacksaw" Hackenbruck talks to Steve about what it took to beat the Skullbuster, and his experiences on Broken Skull Challenge. Tommy also has plenty of tips to share about Crossfit training, and competing in the new Grid League. Plus, here about his days playing college ball for coach Urban Meyer.
