In March 2020, Twiddy & Company, a family-owned vacation rental company known for hospitality rooted in personal interactions, needed to adjust to contactless, remote customer service. With the upcoming vacation season thrown into chaos by the COVID-19 pandemic, president Clark Twiddy had a responsibility to the company's network of homeowners who rented their homes through the company, to guests who had booked vacations, and to employees who had been recruited by Twiddy's reputation for treating staff well. Who, if anyone, could he afford to make whole and keep happy?
Clark Twiddy discusses his first book, Memories of the Currituck Outer Banks: As Told by Ernie Bowden. Ernie Bowden was an icon on the northern Outer Banks who wore many hats: cattleman, public appointed official, trash collector, sailor, and more. Hear what Mr. Bowden was like and how life was very different on the Outer Banks when he was a young man.

Clark Twiddy is the President of Twiddy & Company, an asset management and hospitality firm founded in 1978 along the North Carolina Outer Banks. He was raised in Duck, North Carolina, and is a combat veteran of the US Navy and an alumnus of several universities. Clark has served in numerous public, private, government, and non-profit capacities at various levels, from volunteer to Chair. He was selected as the FBLAs Business Person of the Year in North Carolina in 2019 and is currently the President of the Outer Banks Community Foundation. Married to a native Texan, he is the father of two young daughters and enjoys time on the water and the guitar in his spare time. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Clark Twiddy about leading effectively during a crisis. Clark reflects on how he worked to build a trusting relationship with his customers even during the lockdown and why that allowed him to reap the rewards once things reopened. We also discuss how Clark's company built capacity and value through digital innovation and how they work in partnership with the University of North Carolina in the spirit of co-opetition. What You Will Learn: Clark reflects on his experience managing his vacation rental business through the pandemic The two reasons businesses in the travel industry can fail How showing vulnerability builds trust How Twiddy & Company built capacity and value by leveraging digital tools Why Clark was so keen to engage with the broader community on a sustainable tourism project The creative ways that Clark has guided his company through the last 18 months and the key lessons learned Maintaining Visitor Trust As the pandemic took hold, customer confidence in the possibility of future travel took a nosedive. Clark explores the lessons his company learned about maintaining visitors' trust and why it was so important to be honest and transparent — and he shares the three key factors that comprised their covenant with their customers. We discuss why it is so powerful to acknowledge failures and how it allows community partners and stakeholders to have faith in your business. Leading in a Crisis Leaders in the hospitality industry are predisposed to want to give visitors a positive experience, but that desire was tested amid the COVID-19 crisis. Clark explains why he felt it was important to highlight to his team that it was ok to make mistakes but that the most important thing was to learn from those mistakes. He outlines how they built their founding principles of reflectiveness and transparency and how he sees them benefiting their partners in sustainable destination management in North Carolina. Amy and Jen discuss the recent guardian headlines stating that 'bottle fed babies swallow millions of micro plastics every day'. We discuss what micro plastics are, where they can be found and whether or not they are in babies' milk as this headline reports. We give answers to the questions that might be springing to your mind according to the most recent evidence available - do we ingest them, do we absorb them into organs, can they cross into the placenta and most importantly - should we be worried about them? We talk about some possible alternatives to reduce the risk for parents who are concerned about potential health risks, as well as pitfalls to watch out in terms of formula milk preparation and advice health visitors can give with confidence. Jeff Twiddy is one of my very own students from the Flip Your Life Community. Jeff is a former school teacher and football coach that started his own membership site in the education space a few years ago. He has now built an incredible membership site with more than 3,000 members paying an average of $47/month. His resources are used in hundreds of schools all over the world. In today’s episode we go deep into Jeff’s membership site and discuss how to upsell free trials into annual members on your ‘Thank You’ page, the life-changing nature of creating your own monthly recurring revenue business, and how outsourcing content creation allowed Jeff to focus on building his million dollar membership.
Earlier this week I spoke with Clark Twiddy, president Twiddy and Company, to hear how they used the SAS data analytics platform and Clark’s military background with intelligence to bring data science to his family-owned small business. And how that helped the company to “digitize their southern hospitality” and create new opportunities even in the heart of a pandemic that is crushing the travel and leisure industry at large.
Clark is the President of Twiddy & Company, a family firm based along North Carolina's Outer Banks. Specializing in the vacation rental market, Twiddy & Company manages more than 1,000 privately owned vacation homes and employs more than 125 full-time staff. A combat veteran of the U.S. Navy, Clark's leadership experience also includes service on the boards of public, private, non-profit, and government organizations.
