On the latest episode of the semi-semi-regular Matador Revisionist History Podcast, we are joined by Bardo Pond founder and guitarist Michael Gibbons, Carbon Records founder, longtime WAYO host and Bardo-ologist Joe Tunis, and our podcast host Matt Sweeney (Chavez, The Hard Quartet). The conversation marks the 25th anniversary reissue of ‘Set and Setting,' plus the double LP rarities compilation ‘Melt Away,' both out TODAY. Michael, Joe, and Matt dig into the earliest days of Bardo Pond— fighting (and then bonding) over a Lester Bowie LP with bassist Clint Takeda, opening for Smog and Royal Trux at Philadelphia's Khyber Pass, and eventually even tuning their instruments.

Joe Tunis has been an active participant in the Rochester music scene for the last three decades. As most listeners of this podcast are probably aware by now, I got into our local music scene in the mid-90s. By that time, Joe was playing in the band Hilkka and had already formed Carbon Records. Much of our conversation focuses on the 1990s and early 2000s. In the late 1990s, Joe also formed Pengo, a No Wave band with Jason Finkbeiner and John Schoen. Jason and John had both released music previously on Carbon Records. Joe and I discuss the history of Carbon Records, as well as what he has been up to in recent years with the label. Hilkka played all three of the Fat Day shows my friends and I booked in Rochester. Naturally, I had to use this opportunity to talk about Fat Day. Joe is also heavily involved in the experimental noise scene. We talk about this briefly during our conversation and I plan to have Joe on again eventually to cover any ground we missed. Joe also has a local radio show on WAYO and a podcast called My Teeth Need Attention. I'm including a ton of links that are relevant to all of Joe's projects in the show notes. His mom's diplomatic career took him from Nigeria to South America and ultimately to the A. After sweeping hair at a barbershop and working as a bank teller, he started writing songs with the late Fabio Legarda under the name "The Twins". Soaking up game over the years, he took the leap of faith and became an artist. Since then, he has worked with artists like Mr. Pig, Phay, Zarion Uti, and more. Harland Alexander's distinct brand of lo-fi indie pop music metabolizes friendship, family, love, tree-planting, childhood trauma, the comical absurdity of everyday life, and unites them into healing art. His live performances seek to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable in their own skin and safe to exist within their deepest truths. He wants the audience to leave feeling free to explore the depths of their beings free of guilt and shame. His shows are fun, self-loving, playful, life celebrating experiences.  After obtaining a certificate in Recording Arts from NSCC, Harley has been engineering and producing music in Halifax for the past decade. During this time he has worked alongside artists such as Charlotte Day Wilson (as well as The Wayo), Walrus, Billie Dre and the Poor Boys, Robert Loveless, Kurt Inder, Campbell Woods and Adrian Teacher - either headlining shows and touring, recording and producing, or making music together. He has been touring across Canada's East Coast - notably Halifax Pop Xplosion and the Canadian Space Program Celebration hosted by Bill Nye - as well as in the US. His new album just released August 15, go check it out at the link below! Blog link: http://videogamegrooves.com/2021/08/29/episode-85-very-ok-vinyl-necrosphere-actraiser/ Your favorite single-button adventure through the round (and flat) world of video game music on vinyl has returned! This week we speak with Scott Geoffrey from burgeoning record label Very Ok Vinyl about the particulars of curating, producing, and (mostly) shipping wax from the not-so-frozen-right-now north. Scott takes us right into our first feature this week as we discuss developer Cat Nigiri's two-button metroidvania game Necrosphere. The game is unusual, the developer and composer are rather distinctive, and the music itself jams. We go into a bit of the special characteristics that made Necrosphere the optimal choice as VoV's inaugural release. Anthony glides us down (Mode 7 style) to our next feature, Wayo Records' Actraiser. The idiosyncratic SNES class-by-itself "god game plus action platformer" also enjoys a great Yuzo Koshiro score, and the vinyl release fully brings it. The Wayo release also includes a recently-reorchestrated symphonic arrangement of the game's score, and we weigh the pros and cons of either interpretation. We cover the recent releases and upcoming chase items (as well as breaking Anthony's heart and wallet a few times), and call it a wrap for this episode, because we're just that efficient and awesome. "Great music at a bad time." That's the title of a new playlist put together by CITY Magazine. As written by arts editor Daniel Kushner , the playlist is a "non-comprehensive but varied collection of some of Rochester’s best new audio creations. From the country rock of Benton Sillick’s project The Heavy Love Trust to the big-band feel of up-and-coming pop bands such as The Sideways and Nancy, from the gritty, impassioned hip-hop of artists including Capital Cee and Young, Black, and Gifted to fantastic vocal performances by Danielle Ponder and She Rise — local music stepped up to provide a feel-good respite, a momentary escape, and at times poignant reflection on the difficult times we live in." This hour, our guests discuss the playlist and the 2020 Rochester music scene. Our guests: Daniel Kushner , arts editor for CITY Magazine Dan Gross , digital content reporter at WROC, and host and producer of Rochester Indie Musician Spotlight Kholaa , host of The Cool Cut on WAYO 104.3 FM

http://polaroid41.com/unexpected-music/ Sunday November 15th, 5:17pm. Last February I was in a waiting room, bored, chatting on messenger on my phone. My friend sent me a video clip, ‘Here, while you're waiting.' I rarely watch video clips and this one was three minutes long, but my friend has good taste and I was stuck in a waiting room for the foreseeable future, so I put my headphones in and clicked play. The video opens with a hand stuffing a microphone in the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian and an off-camera voice commanding, “Finish the lyrics ! “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?...” An invisible host goes from person to person, throwing out different songs and meeting varying degrees of success. He sings Queen to a goth guy wearing satanic horns who just squeals back at him like a pig. He approaches two girls sitting at a sidewalk table at a café and bombards them with “Finish the lyrics! I say boom boom boom, lemme hear ya say wayo!” One girl looks half panicked and the other timidly replies, ‘Wayo?' He laughs and says, “You can do better than that!” He sings it again and the girls shout back together: “WAYO!” Their entire interaction lasts less than 10 seconds and in that time the girls go from confused to skeptical to shyly complying to wholeheartedly singing and laughing. Next there's a guy in a dubious state of sobriety who's eager to please: the host is set to launch into Bohemian Rhapsody, “Finish the lyrics! Mamaaa-” and the guy on the street jumps in with ‘MIA! MAMA MIA!' while the host continues ‘just killed a man…!' Total confusion. The host tries again with different young man who takes Bohemian Rhapsody and absolutely runs with it. The next guy isn't having it though: the host barely has time to say, ‘Finish the lyrics!' when the guy on camera interrupts with, ‘What the fuck are you doing man? I'll finish you in second. Fuck off.' Yikes. But regardless of the response, the host simply cackles and giggles delightedly. Next up he's got a great Yakety Yak Don't Talk Back exchange with a man in an expensive looking coat inside a deli. Then a middle eastern guy gives his all trying to remember the lyrics to ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time.' As I said, the video is three minutes long and I almost hit stop at this point. I've had a laugh but don't feel like I really need to see more. I've got it down. But, I'm in a waiting room, so I let the video play...and I'm so glad I did. The last woman to come on screen is wearing a black turtleneck and a three-quarter length camel colored coat. She's thin, small, serious looking. Her hair is highlighted blonde and blow-dried, her makeup is careful and stylish. She's carrying a coffee and walking in the London Underground. He prompts her with the first few words of ‘Shallow,' the critically acclaimed song from the movie ‘A Star is Born.' The woman hardly stops walking but quietly and beautifully sings back the rest of the line, smiles and goes to continue on her way. For the first time the host drops his delighted cackling and says, “Wow. You're really good. Keep going.” She smiles at him and lets loose, her gorgeous voice reverberating off the white subway tiles. Suddenly a beautiful sound where there was none. ... First published 1 February 2016 Welcome to this episode of AfricanPod, where we meet a Politician who says most African Politicians are incompetent, greedy and selfish. Kofi Wayo from Ghana is the politician. He differentiates himself by the fact that he has spent most of his life in the United States and became self-sufficient by making a lot of money as an International business man. He attacks other politicians like no other and claims common sense is the one thing lacking among African leaders. As fresh as this interview sounds, it was conducted in December 2001. That is 15 years years ago. Perhaps the one thing you can take away from this interview is that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Mike Welden is back. Like literally. Last we heard from Mike, he had just run a smokin 13:34 at Laurel Highlands Ultra. And then, nothing. Where'd he go, what'd he do? Turns out, those answers are "everywhere" and "a lot", mostly. It's complicated. Listen in as Mike, in typical Welden-esque fashion weaves us the tale of a 2017 gone awry and a 2018 on the cusp. Meg Williams is a guitarist, songwriter, and singer based out of Nashville, TN. Meg has been busy performing all around Nashville at respected Writer's Nights and Songwriter Showcases, professional blues jams, and numerous venues with both her band and as a solo/duo act - you can find her on a stage nearly every single night. After living in Nashville for only a few months, she has already been the Featured Artist at songwriter showcases, shared the stage with many established songwriters, and competed in the 2016 Nashville Blues Challenge. She has additionally performed in Memphis during the International Blues Challenge week, toured southern California twice, performed at the Summer NAMM showcase in Nashville, toured to Wyoming for Cheyenne Frontier Days at the end of July, and just performed on WDVX's Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, TN. Often compared to Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Raitt, Meg's guitar playing has captured the attention of listeners throughout all of Nashville and increasingly the US. Prior to moving to Nashville, she performed all around the Greater Rochester area, the Finger Lakes Region, and throughout western New York, in popular venues and festivals, including; the Park Ave Festival, Fairport Canal Days, Canandaigua Art and Music Festival, and main stage at the Rochester Fringe Festival. In additional to playing with the full band, Meg has been featured at many singer-songwriter showcases, as both a performer and a judge. She was a guest several times on the “Sunday Night Shakedown” 98.9 “The Buzz” in Rochester, as well as WAYO 104.3FM. She has been featured in the CITY Newspaper, with an article written by the popular music journalist, Frank de Blase. Meg's debut, full length album, ‘Troubles to the Wind,” was released in May 2014, featuring all of Meg's original music. It can be found on iTunes, Amazon, CDbaby, Google Play, Spotify, and can be requested on 98.9 “The Buzz.” Meg Williams Band released their EP “For Now” in October 2015. Currently, Meg is recording her newest blues-rock EP of original music in East Nashville, due to be released later this Summer.

Content warning: This episode deals with the topic of mental health. Some of the imagery is quite intense and is presented as horrific.  In this episode Dawn, Rachel, and guest Woody discuss Shock Theater: the season 3 finale in which Sam leaps into an inmate of a sanitarium and the treatments cause him to believe he is actually some of the persons a normal viewer would have already seen him leap into. Somehow in this setting we find a way to discuss the importance of unicorns, RuPaul Memes, and Arby’s curly fries. Also Dawn drives home the Back to the Future nods in this episode, we discuss Sam’s impressive curriculum vitae, and Rachel freestyle raps. Check out Woody’s podcast: a minute-by-minute analysis of the film My Dinner With Andre at My Minute With Andre and his radio show AlmostTuesday online or on Rochester’s WAYO 104.3.
