    Virginia is for Peanuts

On today's episode, we got to speak with Marshall Rabil, of Virginia-based, female and family-owned Hubbard Peanut Company, aka HUBS. Many years ago, in the small Virginia crossroads village of Sedley, Dot Hubbard developed a unique way to cook the Virginia peanuts grown on her father's farm. She diligently used only the finest peanuts from the local harvest. Today, Dot's recipe for using only the best remains unchanged. Sedley is pretty close to the NC border - directly east of Virginia Beach.   Virginia has become well-known for its gourmet peanuts, with farmers in the southeastern portion of the state producing millions of pounds each year. The legume, commonly referred to as a nut, is enjoyed raw or boiled.   The Virginia Peanuts stands out from the other peanut varieties in both size and taste; they are the largest peanut, are more flavorful than the three other varieties, and have a characteristic crunch when eaten. Virginia Peanuts are commonly called the “Ballpark Peanut” because they are the peanut variety sold at baseball games across the country.    Find Hubs Peanuts: https://www.hubspeanuts.com Want to connect? Because a shared fire lowers our defenses in the best of ways, we can story tell, and truth tell, and spread the warmth of hope and grace and reassurance. Gathering around a flame is primal and precious and perfectly healing and while it's dangerous to play with matches, it's life-changing to campfire. Donald Davis was born in Waynesville, North Carolina, a small town in the mountainous region of Western North Carolina. He received a B.A. from Davidson College  and a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University Divinity School. Davis served as a Methodist minister in High Point, North Carolina for over 20 years before retiring to become a professional storyteller. He has recorded over 25 storytelling albums and written several books. His long career as a teller and his promotion of the cultural importance of storytelling through seminars and master classes has led to Davis being dubbed the "dean of storytelling.” Davis has appeared on National Public Radio, CNN and ABC's "Nightline". Davis is a strong advocate of storytelling, not just the profession, but also storytelling in everyday life. He feels that we connect with one another through the stories that we tell each other across the family dinner table. We THOROUGHLY enjoyed his take on storytelling cultures and hope you do too! If you've ever had the opportunity to visit one of the Florida, South Carolina or North Carolina beaches that border the Atlantic ocean in the summer months, you may have seen areas taped off for the protection of sea turtle hatchlings. On this episode we will discuss the endangered species of loggerhead sea turtles that often grace our southern beaches.   Each year between May and August, female loggerheads leave their ocean home to nest on the coast. They dig a large hole in the dry area of the beach near the sand dunes, deposit an average of 117 eggs and then cover up the nest to protect it from predators. It is believed that they nest on the beach where they were hatched even decades earlier!
