Topics: -As Sam ventures out to clients again, he realizes he is not prepared for some basic functionality out in the world. -Both Joe & Jerry are fancy coffee drinkers -Jerry was in for a shock as he walks in the door to a client where they were not practicing the same measures that he was for safety. -Joe was hopeful of a video from Jerry’s incident but no such luck. -Sam thinks he’s taking the brave approach of assisting a client in setting up Google WiFi remotely. That’s just a regular workday for Joe. -Google seems to require the Google WiFi app for setup, then the Google Home app moving forward. -Google WiFi vs Eero. Which would you choose? -The iOS screen sharing via QuickTime didn’t work for Sam and Joe recalls having a similar issue lately. -All this discussion of remote access get Joe all riled up again about screen recording on macOS. -A once exciting and now disappointing “feature” of Ubiquiti UniFi was up alerts. Sam figured this would be a great way to find out once a device came back online but instead, he received repeated and unnecessarily alerts throughout the day. So much so that he had to turn this feature off. -Joe is in for quite a surprise while attempting to remotely upgrade a client to macOS 10.15.5. His client ended up on the beta of Big Sur! He had to do some extra work to create a script in Addigy using the seedutil command. This would allow him to get the status of computers in the Developer Program. Thanks to Shawn Maddock for pointing him in the right direction with seedutil. Joe has submitted those as scripts and custom facts for the community.  -Sam also mentions managing beta program access via MDM configuration profile. -A bug that may occur when enrolling into the Big Sur beta is that your computer will display a message stating that “your computer is being managed by swscan”, as noted in the developer documentation: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-big-sur-11-beta-release-notes

Command Control Power: Apple Tech Support & Business Talk

Topics: -Not surprisingly, a UniFi topic kicks off the show.  As Jerry rolls his eyes about the UniFi Dream Machine, it appears UniFi has released a rack mountable Dream Machine Pro: https://store.ui.com/products/udm-pro -Joe recounts a story of him installing a Dream Machine and Flex HD https://store.ui.com/products/unifi-dream-machine https://store.ui.com/products/unifi-flexhd -Joe has a PSA  and UniFi best practices to share: Turn off Settings > Site > Uplink Connectivity Monitor (only if no mesh access points in use!). Turn off Settings > Site > Auto-Optimize Network. Turn off Settings > Wireless Networks > SSID > Advanced Options > High Performance Devices.  Modify the DTIM Period?  -Wi-Fi channel management and manual vs automatic is something Sam & Jerry differ on -DHCP vs static vs DHCP reservations.  What do you do? -Joe has a new business idea for an auto power cycling router -The gang jokes about photos clients take and send to help diagnose issues -Sam discovers that you can set up a single UniFi access point without the use of a controller and simply use the app -UniFi “rolling upgrades” via the controller can be confusing, as noted by Joe when doing it recently.  It's mostly been successful, because the Start Rolling Upgrade button is only available when viewing the "Wireless" tab, which only lists the APs – and yet, it includes the switch update as part of it  -Jerry has a client that requires manual firmware of their 16 Ubiquiti UniFi devices using SSH -Zendesk has a great API to use with mail clients so you can quickly change the status of tickets, assign to agents, etc.  Sam discovers this late in the Zendesk game but it has already made him much more efficient dealing with tickets: https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203691006-Using-the-Mail-API-to-update-ticket-properties-from-your-inbox -Another PSA from Joe, Apple has begun recycling serial numbers for Mac computers so companies like Watchman Monitoring need a new method of determining the estimated age of a machine. https://beetstech.com/blog/decode-meaning-behind-apple-serial-number https://www.macrumors.com/2020/01/06/apple-randomized-serial-numbers-late-2020/ -Sam has an odd end result when dealing with an old issue of Spotlight being unable to search Outlook emails -The “Focused” email in Outlook can be too easy to click on and confuse the user.  Jerry has seen this all too often.  Joe wants to rename it “randomly hide some of my stuff”. -As the spotlight conversation goes on, Joe mentions a script he created in Addigy to destroy and rebuild the spotlight database: https://prod.addigy.com/#/macmanage/community/scripts/5dddb3325ff0a156d595558d

Topics: -Jerry compares a client to an itchy mosquito bite. He also references one of our old favorite methods of troubleshooting - removing items in the /var/folders directory. -While working on an iMac, Jerry hears that “pop” sound and immediately knows that it is the stand hinge has snapped. One method of repair is from “The Mac Hack”: https://themachack.com -Joe questions the organization and direction of icons on the Mac. Sam compares it to a direct opposite of Windows desktop icons. -The Ubiquiti UniFi initial splash screen raises unnecessary alarm bells -Ever since diagnosing the Cloud Key disconnects as being power related, Joe’s team has had major strides in stability of the gen 1 Cloud Key by connecting to power as opposed to relying on POE. -Sam has some follow up on using his offsite controller and adopting his client devices into sites -Although discussed before, figuring out how to sell additional services like UniFi monitoring to existing clients is a challenge -Autofill options in Safari were prompting for Keychain credentials with one of Joe’s clients. After some research, he found similar instances with a laptop in clamshell mode. The odd fix was to disable Touch ID for use in Safari. -As regular listeners are aware of, Jerry has recently located. He has an odd story of unmarked trucks making deliveries from Amazon. With enough pushback, he was able to push for a change to licensed drivers and companies.

Command Control Power: Apple Tech Support & Business Talk

Topics: -Joe kicks off the show bringing up leisure time and time management  -Working ON the business vs working IN the business -A challenge for Sam is meeting interruptions that occur when clients reach out. Not just for him but for his staff -Sam may be on the lookout for a new hire but does he look for an admin or a tech? -The CCP crew are very appreciative of the collective audience and their feedback/advice -“This is not for everyone”. Sam comes to the realization that running a business isn’t something everyone can handle.  -A continual question for Sam is taking on Windows clients.  -Joe explores marketing new services to current clients as a method of increasing revenue. For instance, offering Ubiquiti installations for clients in need of upgraded Wi-Fi.  -QuickTime screen recording to the rescue for Sam as he tries to see a message that quickly disappears on his screen -Joe has some follow up to how he sets up his clients with individual Ubiquiti UniFi controllers. While Sam is moving to a central controller, specific logins per client is something they agree on.  -Cloud Key stability has plagued all of us. After some research, Joe has dug up information about the Mongo database and how it is prone to failure during a power loss. To combat this, Joe discusses his backup power plan for the Cloud Key.  -After a recent discussion with Christopher Stout on Episode 311, Sam is looking to setup a closed system like UniFi, Synology Surveillance Station or Security Spy -Sam learns some interesting details from a SonicWALL vendor about true throughput  -Friend of the show, Weldon Dodd points out a great write up by Rich Trouton on his site, Derflounder. It’s an interesting piece about enabling Touch ID for sudo commands.

Command Control Power: Apple Tech Support & Business Talk

-Jerry discusses the origin of the Jer-RE-SEND -Jerry’s dad gets schooled on email security. His dad makes a statement that many of our clients share: “how am I supposed to know these things?" -One of Joe’s clients thinks Touch ID will be “hacked” -While on the topic of security, 1 Password is highly recommended by us but the built in iCloud Keychain has come a long way and may fit the bill for some customers -Jerry’s dad provides some additional comic relief during a modem upgrade -This story reminds Joe of The Print Shop software by Broderbund and the “tractor feed” paper -Sam gets a little salty when describing a day that went sideways when attempting to adopt Ubiquiti Unifi equipment on site.  Something he aways recommends against. -We discuss the important concepts of the sunk-cost fallacy, or escalation of commitment. How can we know when we're being tenacious, and when we're succumbing to commitment bias? -Joe's issue connecting to public WiFi, captive portal login page doesn't load. There are workarounds, like closing the popup login page (which displays "A problem occurred: The web page couldn't be loaded.") and then manually loading captive.apple.com in Safari, and refreshing the page repeatedly when necessary. Or loading the router's IP address in Safari. But it turns out that it's a bug in Sophos Home that affects Mojave, and they are working on a solution: Captive Portal / Login Page does not load on MacOS when connecting to a Public/Guest Wi-Fi Hotspot.  - Joe uses a resource by Matt Coneybear to automate the process of connecting to VPN when on non-secure networks: http://matt.coneybeare.me/how-to-setup-an-auto-reconnect-script-for-an-ikev2-vpn-service-on-your-mac
