HPR4379: Mapping Municipalities' Digital Dependencies

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. In this episode, I discuss my ongoing project aimed at mapping the dependencies municipalities have on major third-party digital services, particularly focusing on Microsoft and Google , given their dominance in the market. The aim of this research isn't about debating the quality of these products—it's assumed that with thousands of employees, these services meet most quality expectations. Instead, the focus is on the critical implications of widespread dependency and potential risks related to service interruptions or supply chain attacks. Why is this important? Supply Chain Attacks : High dependency means higher vulnerability to targeted disruptions. Business Continuity : Significant risks were illustrated by incidents such as the CrowdStrike outage in July 2024 , which forced Brussels Airport back to pencil-and-paper operations temporarily. My Research Approach: Primarily, I analyze the DNS MX records of municipalities: MX records typically reveal if mail services are hosted on Microsoft (Office 365/Exchange Online) or Google (Workspace). A high probability that using these providers for email also means municipalities likely depend on the respective cloud office suite (e.g., Word/Excel/SharePoint or Docs/Sheets/Drive). Preliminary Observations: Belgium, Finland, Netherlands : Over 70% of municipalities rely heavily on Microsoft mail services, a significant warning sign of dependency. Germany, Hungary : Fewer than 5% of municipalities use Microsoft or Google explicitly via MX records, though caution is necessary. Here's why: Challenges Identified: Local MS Exchange Servers : Municipally hosted local installations aren't externally identifiable via MX records. Mail Proxies : Some municipalities use mail proxy services (spam/phishing filters) obscuring the actual mail service used behind proxy domains. Techniques Tested: SPF Records : Often reveal the underlying email service, though they may contain outdated information, lowering reliability. Telnet EHLO Commands : Municipalities commonly obscure their SMTP headers, limiting usefulness. Cloud Provider IP-Ranges : Investigating if mail servers run on Google, Amazon, or Azure infrastructure. Even if identified, this alone doesn't clarify if proprietary or replaceable services are used. TXT Records : Occasionally contain subscription keys or mail-related settings (e.g., MS subscriptions, Mailjet), but again, could be historical remnants. Unfortunately, none of these get to show me all of the third party services. Community Call: I'm reaching out to listeners and the broader community for ideas or techniques on reliably fingerprinting the actual digital service providers behind mail servers. Specifically: How to accurately determine if servers run Microsoft or Google services ? Any ideas to detect deployments of Nextcloud or similar open-source alternatives? Resources: Project Webpage : jurgen.gaeremyn.be/map.html Source Code : gitlab.com/jurgeng/mxcheck I'm looking forward to all your suggestions in the comments! Provide feedback on this episode.

SMBs Boost AI Budgets, Europe Shifts from US Cloud, US Manufacturing Sentiment Declines

Small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are increasingly turning to third-party service providers to enhance their capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and hybrid cloud solutions. A recent Forrester report, commissioned by Crayon, indicates that 31% of surveyed leaders from Australia, New Zealand, India, and Southeast Asia plan to combine in-house teams with external providers to improve their AI capabilities within the next year. The report highlights a significant interest in AI, with 83% of respondents experimenting with free AI tools, although many are still in the exploration phase rather than implementation. Additionally, 87% of businesses are increasing their budgets for third-party services, signaling a shift towards advisory and pilot projects rather than traditional managed services. In Europe, there is a growing trend among customers to seek alternatives to U.S. cloud service providers due to concerns over reliability, pricing, and data security. Discussions at the recent KubeCon EU event revealed a tripling of inquiries for local cloud solutions, with companies like NextCloud gaining traction. The dominance of major players like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google, which control about 70% of the European cloud market, is being challenged as organizations question their control over data and consider a transition to trusted local providers.Meanwhile, U.S. manufacturing sentiment is declining, with many manufacturers bracing for recession-like conditions amid ongoing trade tensions. Surveys indicate a significant drop in optimism among factory owners, with the New York Federal Reserve reporting one of the lowest outlooks in over two decades. Although manufacturing output saw a slight increase in March, the overall landscape remains volatile, with future hiring intentions at their lowest since 2016. This juxtaposition of rising output against declining sentiment underscores the complexities facing the manufacturing sector.Lastly, Synology is tightening its grip on hardware by implementing restrictions on the use of third-party hard drives in its future network-attached storage devices. Starting in 2025, only Synology-branded drives and those certified by the company will be supported for full functionality. This move raises concerns about vendor lock-in, particularly for managed service providers (MSPs) who have relied on Synology for its reliability and ease of use. Additionally, a cautionary tale emerges from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's misuse of Signal for sharing sensitive military information, highlighting the importance of operational security and the need for a strong cybersecurity culture within organizations. Three things to know today 00:00 Tech Tides Are Shifting: SMBs Want Advice, Europe Wants Control, and U.S. Industry Feels the Strain05:58 Hard Drives Locked Out: Synology Tightens the Rules, and MSPs Might Rethink Their NAS Game07:32 He Did It Again: Hegseth's Signal Habit Raises the Stakes for Cybersecurity Culture  Supported by:  https://www.huntress.com/mspradio/ https://cometbackup.com/?utm_source=mspradio&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=sponsorship  Join Dave April 22nd to learn about Marketing in the AI Era.  Signup here:  https://hubs.la/Q03dwWqg0 All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories?

Zelf ontwikkelen of inkopen? Is this inherently an increased data security risk? What of the grit needed to host your own digital infrastructure? The answers to these questions may surprise you! Lea Gröber, PhD student in Usable Security @ CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security, shares insight from two recent studies exploring motivations in self-hosting and Nextclouders specifically. We explore the topic of Usable Security and how, in terms of security, the human aspect of your digital infrastructure may be the most important, and yet the least understood.
