This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're stuck in the middle with you. If you're feeling stuck, you're not alone and it's safe to say that the entire government apparatus at all levels seem stuck these days. This edition of a show will be a recital of being stuck, from gridlock in Ottawa to impasses at the annual international climate change summit. Our provincial government seems stuck on bail reform, while our greatest Christmas parade is just strapped... for cash. This Thursday, November 21, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Gridlock, Stalk and Barrel. Have you heard the news from Parliament Hill. You probably haven't because the place has been in a procedural gridlock for almost two months now. In the midst of a postal workers strike and a will they/won't they confidence condition in the House, it's the latest example of widespread disfunction at the federal level, and it's not like there are any serious issues that need solutions. This week, we will take a break from American political dysfunction to talk about some of our own. Much Baku About Nothing. COP29 is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan right now, and as always there's great hope that the world's richest countries, the ones who are the source of so much carbon, might decide to take bold action to avert climate disaster. It's hard to hold out much hope with the world's biggest, loudest climate denier about to return to the White House, but it might not be as homeless as you might think. We'll look at the news coming out of COP and decide if the world might still be saved. Bail House Rock. The Ontario government has been turning up the pressure on the federal Attorney General to reform bail and make it harder for repeat and dangerous offenders to get release until their trial. Sounds reasonable, right? Hold that phone because legal activists are saying that the issue is a system that has so many people in jail right now, they're over-populated, and a court system not well-staffed enough to process people in a Constitutionally speedy manner. So is the real problem bail after all? The Santa Clause. This week, the organisers of the Toronto Santa Claus Parade said that without some financial help the parade won't make it to its 120th birthday next year. The Original Santa Claus Parade is the latest Canadian cultural institution to face issues with funding in this post-pandemic period, and that includes Hot Docs, Just For Laughs and the Vancouver Folk Festival, which have all been on the brink of closure in the last year. Are we doing enough to protect Canadian culture? Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.
Today on ReFolkUs, we chat to Luke Wallace. Welcome to the 2022 Summer Music Festivals. Part Two We've kept Edmonton, Calgary and the next event the Vancouver Folk Festival in the mix. Added this week is HUFF the Halifax Urban Folk Festival. Its artistic director is a classic Canadian troublemaker, Mike Campbell. The same Mike who co-hosted Mike and Mike for MuchMusic. Then curated the rise of a great music room The Carleton in Halifax. It just won the best small live room in Canada. Like its leader, the HUFF is wonderfully different. Enjoy!! Here we go… When the pandemic hit at the beginning of 2019 anything that qualified as a gathering took the brunt of the hit. Restaurants, concerts, sports, schools, music tours, group travel, etc! Festivals of all descriptions were immediately shut down and artists went home and stayed home. So, here we are two years later and this summer the music festivals have been fully booked by artists who can't wait to get on the road and on stage. To be met by audiences and music fans who truly missed the live music experience. We'll touch on four music festivals but they do represent all festivals, big and small. Please find one near you and support the festival and the artists. Each web link below has info on the performers, their schedules, and ticket sales. I wrote today's 'Song To Chew' ATTA WAY T'GO BOY! back in the early 80's for an anthology album called "Bullets And Guitars". It was produced by Gary Cristall, who ran the Vancouver Folk Festival for years and includes songs by Si Kahn, Utah Phillips, Holly Near, Leon Rosselson and other talented progressive folksingers and activists. My song's a satirical 'pat on the back' to our President back then, to provide some balance to this left-leaning musical anthology! All profits from the album went to committed artists and cultural organizations in Central America to fight the exploitation and intervention of outsiders, particularly the US, who continue to prevent the workers and peasants of Central America from exercising their right to self-determination. Does art and music and poetry actually have any 'real world' impact on dictators? You betcha!! We work to undermine the fear-based support systems of authoritarian dictators with our courage, organizing, art, humor, song, poetry, education, solidarity and just better, healthier ideas. I hope this song helps you continue to think about these things you and your friends can do to take some action to help us move us a bit closer to a more fair, and just world for all of us. ~ Subscribe to my Songs To Chew podcast = https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/peter-alsops-songs-to-chew/id1446179156 ~ CAMPING WITH DADS = https://www.amazon.com/Camping-Dads-Peter-Alsop/dp/B08CS871QW/ref=sr_1_1 ~ www.FaceBook.com/WeLikePeterAlsop ~ Youtube.com/peteralsop = videos ~ Patreon.com/peteralsop = support my music & other artistic endeavors ~ www.peteralsop.com/music = CDs & downloads
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Edel over Zoom video! ‘I needed to change things up. En Masse, my next album is changing things up.En Masse is an item quest; an album about discovery through the process of collaboration. The writing, recording and production were guided by the collective instincts, intuition and melody of a cast of collaborators. With this project I wanted to bring in outside ideas and methods to help me formulate a new energy and because of this, En Masse has expanded my artistic capacities.’ – Mike EdelEn Masse, Mike Edel’s 4th full-length due out Nov 20th via PENNANT, saw production and mixing contributions from Marcus Paquin (The National, Arcade Fire) Andy Park (The Head and the Heart, Noah Gundersen) among others. The album features all co-written songs by Edel and including the up-tempo singles/videos for ‘Hello Universe’ and ‘Good About Everything.’After THRESHOLDS, the Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) produced 2019 record, 4 million cumulative streams across major platforms, landing songs on ABC’s American Idol, in heavy rotation on CBC Music, AAA Radio across the US, and on Sirius XM’s The Verge and North Americana; after playing hundreds of shows across North American and Europe including Rifflandia Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Regina Folk Festival, Victoria International Jazz Festival, and; after sharing the stage with Serena Ryder, Foy Vance, and Said The Whale; and after moving to Seattle, WA and getting married, Edel is a creative tour de force with plenty on the horizonWe want to hear from you! Debashish Bhattacharya is an Indian classical musician, singer, composer and instrument pioneer. Debashish has redefined Indian classical music over the last 25 years by performing on slide guitar, and through introducing new techniques, sounds and instruments to the music. He has taught more than a thousand students, created a new genre (Hindustani Slide Guitar), and performed in more than two thousand concerts and workshops, with Grammy nominations and several world music awards. He invented his own slide-guitars, unique to his compositions, which he calls the "Trinity of Guitars". These hollow neck instruments are the 24-string chaturangui, the 14 string gandharvi and the anandi, a 4-string lap steel ukulele. I first met Debashish at the Winnipeg Folk Festival through our mutual friend Bob Brozman, and then had the chance to work with him in a collaboration at the Vancouver Folk Festival the next year. He is an incredibly accomplished musician, and also an excellent fellow and a sheer joy to hang out with! Enjoy my conversation with Debashish Bhattacharya.
