Hot Docs, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Just for Laughs, just the latest cultural institutions to join a long list of Canadian arts groups facing existential threats. Why is this all happening now?Based on recent headlines, you might think that we are in the midst of a total cultural collapse in this country. Film festivals, comedy festivals, symphonies, cinemas, theater companies, arts magazines all closing down or telling us that they're about to. Corporate sponsors are pulling out. Leadership teams are crumbling. People are quitting en masse or getting laid off. There's been a lot of dirty laundry aired in public from within these organizations, open letters and accusations about mismanagement and workplace inequity within these arts organizations. It all sounds miserably dire. Vancouver Folk Music Festival broadcasting live from the Rogue Folk tent in the park! Sadly, there were some technical diffculties at the start, so the show didn't really commence until 8:22 or so. I didn't think we had saved any of it, but here is the show. Previewing western Canadian festivals - including Vancouver, of course - and near the end there is a fascinating conversation with Joey Burns of Calexico. Enjoy!!

85 years!! Incredible. This radio station has been home to renowned broadcasters like Pierre Berton, Lister Sinclair, Wallie Oppal, and Narduwar the Human Serviette! It's amazing to think that I have been on the air at CiTR for almost half those years (1985 to 2023, that's 38 of the 85!) Some tunes dating back to 1937, as well as interviews and songs and tunes from some of my favourite moments at CiTR, including several from Jericho Beach Park when we aired the show from the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Also be a tribute to Tina Turner, and Cream lyricist Pete Brown, as well as new releases from the likes of Eliza Gilkyson, Leftover Salmon, Brighde Chaimbeul, Bela Fleck, Eilen Jewell, and more. Plus a feature on Laura Cortese and a look ahead to this Summer's Edmonton Folk Music Festival, whose lineup was announced this week.
Music by many of the performers just announced for the Vancouver Folk Music Festival at Jericho Beach Park July 14-16. So good that the festival will actually happen this year, after its demise seemed imminent a few months ago. Kudos to interim AD Fiona Black for assembling such a stellar lineup at short notice! Also a mini-feature on Irish singer Clare Sands, and a bunch of new releases from Eilen Jewell, Leftover Salmon, Tinariwen, Denmark's Vesselil and Hielosa, as well as Natalie Merchant, Bruce Cockburn, Karan Casey, Imar, Shirley Collins etc. Also a few Gordon Lightfoot songs from the man himself and from Tony Rice. Plus a few more favourite artists from the past 38 years hosting this radio show - which could be broadcast again from Jericho Park in July! Yay!!

The 45-year old Vancouver Folk Music Festival is a much-loved event for music fans and an important showcase for musicians. So it came as a shock when the festival's board announced two weeks ago that the 2023 festival had been cancelled and they wanted members to vote to dissolve the society. Following a groundswell of support, the board postponed the AGM and held an open meeting to discuss the festival's future. Ian Mass was at the meeting and brings us a report.
With the Vancouver Folk Music Festival cancelling its 2023 edition and possibly shutting down for good, Elamin checks in with two regular attendees, Lisa Christiansen and Naomi Moses, to tell us why this event is so important to the city and how it could be saved. Plus, CBC columnist and culture critic Huda Hassan joins Elamin to unpack the milestones, controversies and implications tied to the recent acquisition of Toronto legacy magazine NOW by rising media journalist Brandon Gonez and his company Gonez Media Inc.
Musician Eliza Carthy was born into an English folk dynasty. The daughter of acclaimed folk singers Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, she joined the family business at a young age as a singer and violinist, playing with her parents as Waterson Carthy and with her mother, her aunt Lal and her cousin Marry as The Waterdaughters. As a solo artist and bandleader, Eliza has explored the roots of folk and expanded the repertoire. Awarded an MBE in 2014, she was twice nominated for the Mercury Prize for album of the year, and in 2021 became the president of the English Folk Dance and Music Society. She tells John Wilson about the first time she attended the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1989, aged 13. Standing on the main stage at sunset overlooking the mountains and sea was a defining moment at the start of her career. She also discusses the influence that singer Billy Bragg and Scottish folk rock band Shooglenifty had on her music. Eliza also talks about the impact of the pandemic on the folk music community and the personal loss of her mother. Producer: Edwina Pitman

It's a hot night, and we take refuge from the heat in memories of summer music festivals, talking about The Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 ("Black Woodstock"), Canada's Festival Express in 1970, the first ever Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1978, and the return of Miles Davis in 1981. Featuring the hot sounds of The Lovin' Spoonful, Charlie Peacock, Nina Simone, B.B. King, The Band, Bruce Cockburn, Peter Tosh, Miles Davis, Sidney Bechet, and more. Cool.
