More on this very special event, here: “This year marks the tenth anniversary of the debut of my "Hard Listening" solo piano project. Thus far I have released two "albums", with Volume 2 in 2016 being a digital only release. To put it as briefly as I can here, the concept and project involves the extensive usage of a wide spectrum of popular musical languages of the 20th century but in a context of an improvisational as well as compositional solo piano style - intended for the recital or concert stage. In this performance I will perform one newer work in two movements but with the addition of a personal and informal "lecture" in which I talk further about some of the experiences and ideas that brought me to develop "Hard Listening”. Margo Watson and Ann Takasaki are joined by Kathie Horman, LaReita Berky, and Dennis Lifferth to discuss the Model of Powerful Impact and the power of charitable giving. “Charity, being charitable, is critical to our well being, our soul, who we are as people, and being part of the human race.” - Margo Watson “I have MS, and I struggle with it, but I'm doing great. And I thought I can give what I can while I still can. And so it's been a real joy to me… I just love doing it, is what it boils down to.” - Kathie Horman “When you meet these people who come in with different objectives, some are providing for others and some are picking them (computers) up, and you see the spark of hope and happiness in their lives, it just makes you want to do it again. … And so I'm grateful for this idea, that within each person is this spark of divinity. And if we can see that and help them feel better when they leave, with a little more confidence, it makes this effort well worthwhile.” - Dennis Lifferth “I know we have a duty. That's true. We all have a duty to help one another. But there's more to it than just a duty. There's the feeling that comes when we're of service to somebody else.” - Dennis Lifferth “It takes a lot of people to make a system work, and they all make a very important contribution.” - Dennis Lifferth “This is an actual part of our family mode. This is what we do. We help. We help where we can help, when we can help, with what we can help with.” - LaReita Berky “Some people are able to give large donations. Some give small, some just give monthly, and some just give frequent flier miles. I mean, there's all kinds of ways to donate.” - Margo Watson “I've given a lot of time. And when I developed MS, I could no longer play my violin … so I donated it to a student who didn't have one. And she's been so thrilled. … There are definitely ways you can help. Sometimes it's just a pat on the back or a hug.” - Kathie Horman “The main body of human beings on this earth are so grateful to be tied to each other through family.” - Ann Takasaki “When people think, “donation,” the immediate thought is cash, right? Card, cash, check. But there's so many other types of donations. There's the in-kind donations, which is what Dennis is doing with the laptops. There's, for our organization, we receive book donations because our focus is literacy, because we believe that when a woman is empowered and knows how to read, then that changes her life and her family's trajectory, of what's going to become of them. You know, reading opens up a world of possibilities.” - LaReita Berky “Receiving donations for what an organization is needing, not just cash, cash is always appreciated, but for what specifically an organization needs, not just what you think they need, but ask, “What do you need?” That's one of the greatest things.” - LaReita Berky “Other ways that people can donate besides the money … is time. Is there something that you can do to help the organization with donating an hour or two a week or more if you are able?” - LaReita Berky “I think one of the fears people have in donating their time is they don't feel like they're qualified, when in fact, the one on one is very simple, just to listen, just to help. Most people are grateful for any attention they may receive. … To volunteer doesn't take money, doesn't take thing, but sometimes it's just your time and your interest in that person.” - Dennis Lifferth “It combats depression when you see that you can help somebody else. It combats self absorption. It just makes you a better person when you can help somebody else realize their dreams.” - Margo Watson Margo Watson is the Director of Outreach Marketing and Fundraising for Big Ocean Women. Her background is quite diverse. She has a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communications and Music. Her dynamic talents led her first to critically acclaimed performances in countless Theater and Concert stages around the country as a soprano soloist and lead actress which included musicals, opera, operetta, orchestral works, comedies, movies, commercials and on-camera TV host. Welcome back to Part 2 of the episode with Hannah Reimann: Pioneer & Advocate of Stretto Pianos and Creator of the International Stretto Piano Festival and Stretto Piano Concerts! In the second half of this eps, we will discuss topics as follows:
Christine Smith is co-founder and co-owner of Frosted Lens Entertainment, an entertainment and informational content development company. Prior to her work at Frosted Lens, she held the position of Music & Sound Director/Composer-in-Residence for RPR Studios for 10 years. Her work has been heard in award-winning films, commercials, and promotional videos. She is currently the host and editor of the podcast "Musicians vs the World" where she explores the many aspects of Musician life. A classically trained pianist, Christine studied with concert pianists Adelina Krivoshena and Asya Markova in her youth. She continued her studies in Piano Performance at Brigham Young University studying with Dr. Jeffrey Shumway and Dr. Scott Holden. Since then Christine has enjoyed performing in solo recitals and in collaboration with various musicians, bands, and ensembles across the country. Though her first love is classical music, she has had the pleasure of working and learning from great musicians of all genres. She has performed as soloist, collaborator, and conductor. And because she loves teaching almost as much as she loves performing, she coaches a few favorite piano students in her home-town studio. What I loved about this interview was Christine's openness to sharing all of the vulnerable details of her story, her pivot from full-time performing due to a chronic illness, AND the effortless-seeming way she used her strengths and her skills to step into a whole new way of working. What I also really noticed was the idea that you can only do what you can do! Even if you aren't battling a chronic illness, you only get so many spoons per day, and maybe the key to a fulfilling life in music is to look for the intersection of what you are great at, what people will pay you for, AND what you can sustainably do in a day, a week, a month. It's worth being conscious of your energy, not just because you can break yourself with overwork - I'm looking at you, 29 year old Jennet - but also because you can do your BEST work when you are taking the BEST care of yourself. Quality over quantity, because YOUR ARTISTRY MATTERS. I know you will love this interview with Christine Smith of Musicians vs the World and Frosted Lens Entertainment! Follow Christine and Musicians Vs the World at her website, instagram, facebook, and Twitter. Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical! Theme music and audio editing by DreamVance. You can join my email list HERE, so you never miss an episode! Or you could hop on a short call with me to brainstorm your next plan. I'm your host, Jennet Ingle. I love you all. Stay safe out there!

Piano performance anxiety is a manifestation of certain beliefs that your student holds. Some of these thoughts might be: Fear of failure Fear of judgement or criticismMessing up in front of their peers Expectations on how their performance should go Thinking that the performance must be a perfect renditionNot trusting in their abilitiesThere might also be some aspects of the performance or exam itself that might make your student feel nervous, such as:How prepared your student is Experience level of performingHow many people will watch the performance?Length of the performance – if a student has a 20-minute recital, this will be very different from a 1-minute performance.Context of the performance - for example, performing for an examiner would be very different to playing just for their family.Getting to the root thoughts of anxiety with your student can be really revealing and a good place to start.Find out more about membership at vibrantmusicteaching.com.

About LMRE LMRE is globally recognised for leading the way in Real Estate Tech & Innovation talent management. At LMRE we are fully committed at all times to exceed the expectations of our candidates and clients by providing the very best advice and by unlocking exclusive opportunities across our global network in the UK, Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. Timestamps: [2:35] Kathryn: How did you become the leader of Hines' innovation platform? Working at Arizona State University was the foundational underpinning that drove my interest for innovation, unique ecosystems and enterprises that drive different types of solutions. Following this, whilst working at McKinsey I was exposed to the global challenges the built environment faces. I joined Hines' investment management platform in 2019, at the time they were working to tackle and solve these challenges. From there I started a team with the intention to help cross-functional initiatives within the firm and our overall governance. I am now named our innovation lead in driving forward a reimagined way of approaching innovation. [4:25] Peter: How did your role in ESG come about? I joined Hines after university, working on development projects around Europe. When the first rules and regulations came up on energy performance in Europe we felt that there was a lot more we could do as a company. We started collecting significant amounts of data and measuring our performance. We wanted to achieve the highest level of efficiency and make our office and residential buildings as healthy as possible for their occupiers. This created a positive feedback loop with our investors that saw that our outcomes were significantly better. Subsequently, I saw a huge opportunity for Hines in ESG given that we were so technically integrated and we had such willingness to innovate. [8:30] Kathryn: How closely do yours and Peter's teams work together? We work extremely closely together, I think ESG and innovation will become even closer in the future. We also have a close collaboration with our operations and engineering personnel, who are the execution and implementation arm of so many of the different strategies and innovations. [10:28] Peter: What is Hines' plan for our planet? The target for us is for operational energy, everything we do around our existing buildings we are looking at setting a target for the embodied carbon, which as a developer is a huge exposure. The target we're setting for operational emissions in 2040 is without offsets and will be aligned with the science based targets initiative. We're investing in furthering energy efficiency in our buildings. The key focus for us is that we're bringing down the actual emissions of our buildings. [13:54] Kathryn: Are there any technologies that you are looking at investing in or are currently piloting? We're taking a truly customer centric approach within the innovation platform to solve some of the challenges within ESG. All types of solutions, tools and technologies can help support carbon tracking, carbon mitigation and create more positive outcomes for our communities and buildings. Hines already has a tremendous playbook and history of innovation, but we are managing processes to think about more obstacles in innovation that may be on the horizon. [17:53] Peter: What are the major trends you've observed across different geographies within innovation, digital transformation and ESG? In the Nordics we have seen great expertise in the area of heat pumps and renewable energy, they have decided much earlier than the rest of the world that they want to stop using fossil fuels. They have a very open mindset to innovation which is extremely refreshing. We have a new development in Manhattan where we are applying the same concepts that people use in Nordic countries and the result is an all electric building which not only will eventually be net-zero but is comfortable for the tenants. If you pick the best expertise from different places around the world you will arrive at a product that is better for everyone. [21:23] Kathryn: What trends have refocused you to work on the innovation side at Hines? What we're seeing across geographies is the concept of flexibility and what our tenants are really demanding, especially in the post COVID world. One particular venture that I can share with you is a software play called Halo. It supports broader flexibility options in the office domain as well as what the tenants are wanting. We also have a flexible workspace product called the Square which is a hardware that offers more flexible types of office spaces. Another trend we are seeing is the concept of data, the data coming out of our building systems can help solve other pain points for our clients. L – Touch on the main lessons you have learnt throughout your career. Kathryn: There is no single person in a team. The power and the force of networks and partnerships is crucial. M - Please give a mention to anyone / product / service. Peter - My colleagues who are running the European Core Fund at Hines are managing to implement what we want to do across the whole firm in such a consistent and coherent way. I also want to shout out to the leaders in this industry who are being very open and collaborative, this mindset is extremely refreshing. R – What has been the most rewarding aspect of working in the innovation side of real estate? Kathryn: The evermore converging of our product types, our industry and the built environment. E - What are you excited about in the future of Proptech? Peter: I'm excited about seeing how much opportunity there is and how this will work financially, as this will be the biggest catalyst for making this happen. He worked in Bone Marrow Transplant, and in 2004, joined the UIPA program and became the Program Director in 2012 and a professor at the University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine in 2014. Before we dive into Iowa's PA program, can you talk a little bit about your own journey, from studying piano performance to social work in Oregon to then becoming a PA in Iowa? [2:19] It does seem a bit convoluted, doesn't it? I think I had a journey that in some respects is very much like other people that have been thinking about joining the PA profession - they've started off in one career pathway or had bumps along the road, and thought, "Well, this isn't a field that I can get into anymore so I'm going to go off and try other things." I will say when I headed off to my undergraduate experience, I thought for sure I was going to go into medicine. As a 17-year-old, I was a young one going off into college, I wasn't quite ready to put my foot down to the pedal the way I needed to at that point in time. I'd always enjoyed playing the piano so I had enrolled with a biology and piano performance plan. When I decided I needed to think about other things, I decided to switch it to piano performance and psychology thinking along the lines of music therapy. I still really wanted to be in that healthcare background so that's where that was going at the time. Once I graduated and learned more about music therapy, I decided it probably wasn't a field that fit who I was so I looked around to see what I could do with that psych degree, and a Master's of Social Work was one of the things that I could do. There were social workers that worked in hospital settings, so that was what really intrigued me. After I graduated, I went on to a hospital there in Portland, Oregon. I started off working in the emergency room, working a 1:00 AM shift on the floor so I really got to see a lot of different experiences and different roles. After that, I worked at their rehabilitation center for several years before moving to Iowa in the neurology department. I did that because I was ready for a change of pace and thought, “Why not Iowa?” So I moved to Iowa, and through my wife, I learned about the PA profession. She's not a PA, but her friend's husband went through the program just before I did. She introduced me to that idea because I told her about that desire to be in healthcare so I looked more into it and thought, "Yeah,
